    Dear friends and followers, welcome back to my channel!
    For this video I will base the explanations on the Boeing 747 and its particular system. Now that you know that the Autobrake is a helpful system for the pilots, lets see how they can activate it and what settings and functions they can choose from. On Boeing models, the switch to activate the Autobrake selector. On the 747-400 it is located on the center control stand under the transponder panel and next to the first officers’ seat. On the 747-8 the same panel is located underneath the gear lever. But in both cases they have the same labeling for their various settings: “RTO”, “OFF”, “DISARM”, AUTOBRAKE “1”, “2”, “3”, “4” and “MAX AUTO”.
    First of all, lets have a look at the options you as a pilot have when coming in for a landing. Please note that the Autobrake alone does not affect thrust reversers or spoiler deployment. Its one and only objective is to trigger the wheel braking demanded by the pilots. The settings 1 to 4 and MAX AUTO, represent deceleration rates at which the system tries to slow down the aircraft. Whether the preset deceleration can be fully achieved depends on the runway and tire conditions. Now, during the descend the pilots will process their checklists and will come to the point “Autobrake”. In most cases this point reads “as required” or simply “set”, meaning the pilots set the Autobrake to one of the specific settings in regard to runway length and runway condition. Once touching down, the wheel spin sensors sense the that the wheels have spun up and the Autobrake starts acting with minimum delay. Any manual braking will over ride this automated process and will disarm the Autobrake immediately. That is why you sometimes hear the pilot calling out “manual braking” after rolling out flickling the selector automatically to the“DISARM” setting. Yes you could disarm the autobrake system by placing the selector manually but pilots wouldn‘t reach to the selector during roll-out, as this is not where eyes should be. Monitor your speed and eyes on the runway.

Would it be possible to use a plane's brakes at the beginning of a takeoff to give yourself a little bit extra margin on your runway length? Essentially, allowing you to spool up your engines a bit higher while still stopped with the brakes clamped, instead of beginning to move down the runway and using up runway length immediately.

Loving your videos! This one is a little over my head. You are talking about braking when conditions are "reasonably normal". How do these systems react when placed under abnormal conditions like total loss of engine thrust? Don't answer that. I am lost already. I would love more info on the general braking system of all commercial airplanes. Speed Brakes, thrust reverse, braking from the pilots...if you have already posted content on that, my apologies.

What about the leading edge of the wing. You did not mention slats. They help lift during low speed operations. Spoiler can be deployed when pilot determines they are needed. The Auto brake dial can be set before take off and kept there or adjusted as needed by pilot.

Very informative Video Captain. I have a query regarding Aborted landing procedure. As an ex aircraft mechanic I will say this. He partially correct, he left out the grappling hook dropped from the trail to aid in breaking. The FAA issued an Airworthy Bulletin for its weekly inspection for fatigue and wear. I've replaced many a grappling hook back in the day.😂😜🤪

Here's a dumb question: Say your taking off from Denver International Airport and you're lined up on 16R/34L runway which is 16,000ft long. Your cargo plane is light, so you know you will takeoff fairly quickly. If you were to keep accelerating past the point of V1/Vr, would the plane start rotating by itself, or would it keep going down the runway?? Anyway, keep up the great work on these great videos.

Wayne Cox it would depend on the elevator trim and it's setting. Usually at take off trim setting, in your scenario yes it will eventually start to take off (but with a lower climb angle)

Hi Captain, english is not my native language, so forgive me if you already mentioned the following in this video. What i'd like to know is: when ready to take off, autobrake set to RTO and go airbone, when does autobrake knob return to OFF position? Immediately after wheels leaves the ground? Or it depends by other reasons/variables or maybe on plane's model? Maybe there's a sensor (like autobrake engaging once touchdown) that "feels" the main gear is no more on the ground? Kinda disappointed- I imagined brakes during take off and the switch setting "RTO" as reverse take off. Pick up speed, spin the plane around and lift off with the back first. Kinda like a chicago turn with a car backwards. One would certainly need assistance- frome the plane for the maneuver and from some mental institution. Glad the real systems are more grounded in reality- learned something. Thank you ^^

Abdulla Alshizawi it’s more like you control how much brake to use. Yes with a full press, the maximum pressure will be applied, but you can vary it as needed.
