ATM's are surprisingly well encrypted, with a strong safe for holding the cash, but unfortunately a lot of them are running outdated OSes and once you get on their internal computers, it is game over. You can just direct them to dispense cash by calling the right driver calls.

I still don't get one thing.. If you can privately own an ATM, then call a bank to tonnect to the main network.. Then if a person windraws money from your atm, bank charges that amount from your bank account? Ok, so then where did the money come from in ATM? Your own pocket? Then arent you losing double amount of money eatch time? Also, who then prevents you from putting in counterfit bills and do money laundring this way? I'm all confused, since in my country all the ATM's are controlled by banks, and ATM's also take bills in, so they do have sensors to check counterfit bills.

Vor year

Kei _ no when a transaction happens, money is transferred from the USER’S account to our account. No money is taken out of our account. When ATM runs out of cash, we withdraw the money in our account in cash to refill the ATM, no money lost.

I wonder how old that power supply is... I wouldn't think it would be able to operate reliably given its age, especially at the high end of its current spec. I bet the load regulation is totally gone (filter caps?) Why not hack a PC supply to run it? I think some of them even have a -12 rail so the 24V servos could be usable, but then again maybe they aren't rated for much current... Sorry for my ramble

And when I was 16 I withdrew 1700 DKR, machine spit out 1400 (My guess was a 500 DKR bill was changed with 200), since it was late at night I showed to the security camera above me, took pictures on my phone and contacted the bank. Was contacted back by the director of that branch saying there was nothing wrong in their logs, it showed I had gotten 1700 and I could come talk to him. I brought my friend who was witness, and we got the message: "You got 1700, our machine weighs the bills and the logs show that, so there is no way it could be wrong". I knew he was full of ****, finally a confirmation xD Even if it weighed every single bill, a piece of tape or any other stuff stuck to them would change that, which I argued but nah... And if it passed the sensor, a year ago 100 DKR was on the bottom of the dispenser box (not really reachable unless you had small and very fast hands)... So yeh, my bank ripped me off when I was 16, finally some good explanation :) And of course, nice videos, enjoyed watching the building a lot :)

It is possible for a machine to dispense coin. The last machine that had that ability was an IBM 4732. This machine had 4 currency cartridges and 4 coin cartridges. The problem is that the protocol used by most ATM's, known as the Diebold protocol, only supports currency and not coin. IBM had their own unique protocol for doing this which never caught on in the industry. Dont think IBM even makes ATM's anymore.

Counterfiet bills are not a problem here in Australia. My friend and I printed up some bills, using a special polymer printer that he has at work, and with the permission of a third who runs a slot machine parlour, we tried them in his machines, and the bill accepter said NO! ;) The bills were destroyed later that day. Our notes are polymer and have some amazing anti counterfieting features, which is probably why the "cheap" copies we made weren't accepted. Just in case your wondering, my friend whom helped try the experiment works for the AFP, so it was all above board :)

Honestly, I'm a little sad that you're headed back to China. As much as your Chinese on-site content is amazing, the development of this cool ATM-hybrid and watching your struggles to get it working, and learning about how the internals actually function really make me wish you spent more time in the states hanging out with Matt at Small Change Arcade and building more cool bits and unusual constructs for videos. While the internals of cell phones and the other cool manufacturing opportunities in China grab my attention, fabricating new, interesting electronic gadgets which may or may not have a reasonable practical use is somehow more interesting, especially when we actually get to see the parts that don't work up front and watch you problem-solve. (There are entirely too few channels which try things outside of their skill set or expectation enough to actually have frequent failures, and when they do we don't get to see them. But it is in the process of failure that we (and you) get to learn about what you can do. Failures, in many ways, are more interesting than successes.)

Sweden is VERY close to become a cash free society. Only a few people still use cash, typically elderly people. Some shops still accepts cash but many totally rejects cash. This is a fact, not fake news or anything like that. It is impossible to pay with cash in a lot of places. The transiton to a cash free society have gone VERY fast in Sweden. For about five years agoe, everyone used cash. Then something happened and now is cash nearly gone. I think that it is really strange that it has gone so fast. Have this transition also happend in your country?

Vor year
m93mak
m93mak

@Small Change Arcade Sweden is really far ahead in the cashless society. For example, the governments will investigate whether Sweden should have an official cryptocurrency. Either in parallel with the regular currency or instead of the current currency. A cashless system becomes so vulnerable. It only needs a little disruption to the computer systems so there will be VERY big problems. It also happened in Sweden just a few weeks ago. The largest electronic ID system, BankID, suffered from malfunctions. Then many payment systems were completely blocked. You could not access your money and not even log in to your bank. Fortunately, they got the system up and running after a few hours. But it shows how vulnerable a society is if there is no cash. I'm not sure that the cash free society mostly is pushed from governments. It is pushed from several directions. Google, Apple and Samsung all have their "pay" solutions. They are also big pushers! But a major driver of the cash free society is the EU law PSD2 https://ec.europa.eu/info/law/payment-services-psd-2-directive-eu-2015-2366_en/ It governs the entire regulatory framework for this market within the EU. Note that it was adopted as early as 2015 but became mandatory in September 2019. Now everyone must follow framework within the EU. Time coincides exactly with the transition to the cashless society in Sweden. I agree that a cashless society causes integrity problems. It is also very vulnerable. But at the same time, it offers many advantages, such as simplicity and agility. New payment solutions make it extremely easy to shop securely on the internet. In Sweden there is a payment service called Klarna. With Klarna can you shop on the internet without having a credit card. You just need to just enter a social security number and then you can shop. You do not even need to identyfy yourself online. The system is sequre and simple. Klarna sends an invoice to you either by mail, to your home on paper or to your mobile phone. You get the goods home and can pay after you receive the goods. Very convenient and completely free of charge, as long as you remember to pay. If you forget, miss to pay, they charge you a fee. You can also chose to pay later or split the payment over longer period. This costs money of course and that is what Klarna whants. It is the fee in the system that is the business model. The more people who fail to pay, or pays later, the more money they earn!

Vor year
Small Change Arcade

There is definitely a push for this worldwide. Without getting too conspiratorial, it's mostly a push by governments. The government has never liked cash, it was just the only option for a long long time. They would very much prefer to be able to track all transactions if needed. I have some serious privacy concerns around going completely cashless. I was also raised by my immigrant grandfather who grew up during the great depression, so I always have cash, but I'm a bit biased. The trend towards encouraging/requiring cashless payments is also evident in the dismissal and non-supportive opinions towards cryptocurrencies, which are essentially digital cash. If it was really an ease of use or resources argument, they would love crypto, but it also comes with anonymity, like cash. In the US there is a very disturbing trend of "civil forfeiture" where police will simply take your cash if they find you with a large amount of it. They assume you're using it for nefarious reasons, then it's on you to prove otherwise. I don't think the US will do away with cash completely any time super soon, but it will happen eventually. Cashless transactions with cards, phone/apps is becoming way way more common though, especially here in SF.

I have worked In arcades and casinos in the UK and really found this video interesting. @ 8:29 you are correct about dimensions. When the UK made a switch from paper notes to polymer this created an issue as the polymer note has a transparent window thus allowing light through from the array op optos to measure width/length and direction. This would tell the system that the note was a lot smaller that what it was as it was expecting the opto to be blocked for longer than it was. As our machines dispense different denominations and our £5, £10 & £20 notes are different sizes, it can tell if you have put £5 in the £20 cassette or vice verse and dump it in a reject box.

Hey, just to say "everyone can buy one" (about the ATM machine)... Not really, I'm wondering that you received that type of message from international viewers. In Europe (for example) we don't have that type of "little" ATM machines like you have in US or Canada.

Vor year
Kris Avi
Kris Avi

In EU at least in some countries the banks own the ATMs, they install, maintain, refill, etc. They might see it as security risk to involve system like US has where everyone can buy one. Might be something that simplifies the process. I have not looked into owning a ATM or what would be the paperwork involved, POS is relatively easy, but with POS you may not do what is done here, as in financial terms you may not sell "cash", only product or service. In case of product you can return it due to consumer laws. A bit different regulations for different type of goods. With services there are also ways to get refund on service. Using POS as cash withdrawal might be going close to money laundering process maybe... I am not sure. I know in my country there was some delays in waiting for regulation to catch up so grocery stores could be used to withdraw money, even then the transaction has to be separated from buying goods and there is some separate process to follow for the store. Only 1 chain ended up supporting it, but that specific brand store has also bank branch, so that might be something they use to get around with it.
