How is you German going after two years?

I'm trying to learn at college and meine Leherin plays easy german for us sometimes. I figured exposing myself to the language more is the best way to learn. So here I am

Janusz brought up several things I wanted to comment on but one jumps out at me. The attitude towards foreign languages in his hometown growing up that foreign languages weren't something normal people did but something only a few weird / smart people did and for normal people you only got the one language - your native language. I think that's pretty common for many countries and definitely so in North America. Learning to understand German in my early to mid 20's was a big deal for me because I proved to myself it wasn't true. I'm pretty sure this holds back lots of people from making real progress in a foreign language. Videos like this one on YouTube I think help. I know I find them encouraging at least.

I think that depends where you live. Usually a more populated and cultural audience will disagree with this comment. Here in NYC area every kid learns at least one second language proficiently. (Spanish is the official second language btw.) And since America is a country of immigrants, you learn yet another language just growing up in the home. In my personal experience, I spoke english first and then spanish for 8 years in school and I still use it to this day. I am now trying to learn German at my own pace, because it's part of my heritage and my grandfather spoke it but never passed it on.

I love how Janusz speaks German. So well and clear. Do people think that he is German, don't they? :) Always a good motivation for me and it's good you both work together because Janusz really understands the challenge we face while learning German!

I just love this couple and their love to promote the language and so many things about them. They are equally so deep but they always try to make it simple, besonders their wisdom easily understandable by others. I admire them a lot!

Nach meiner Heirat lebte ich 10 Jahre in der Schweiz, da mein Mann dort arbeitete, und es war sehr schwierig, Deutsch zu lernen, da ich in einer Region lebte, die nur Französisch sprach. Es hat viel Mühe und viel individuelle Anstrengung gekostet. Ich bin erst auf Deutsch gestartet, als ich nach Deutschland kam und hier einen Intensivkurs machte. Heute leben wir in Deutschland und ich sehe, wie es einfacher wird, sich in der Sprache zu entwickeln, wenn wir in einer Region leben, die nur diese Sprache spricht. Und außerdem, das Hochdeutsch, klingt es in meinen Ohren viel einfacher und melodischer.

I always love hearing the language story of people who learned a foreign language to a high level as an adult. I knew Janus learned German in the 80's as he mentioned that in some other video but I hadn't realized he learned it as a young adult after he had finished school. I think it's more impressive the older you are when you learn a language because it's more difficult for a variety of reasons. I'm positive I would still have an accent no matter how long I lived in a foreign country. Very nicely done.

it's a huge advantage that people have in Europe, they (must)learn several languages; here in USA it's only english and that's it. Being bilingual in Spanish is a plus among the static monolingual American population but the motivation from school years to learn another tongue is very scant.

Ophelia yes, I know; I'm learning german by myself for a while from my city in Orlando Florida. Many people think that by learning English the German flows freely as running water, jajaja; I can read it (with/out a dictionary) but barely can speak out a complex sentence and although you have audiovisual media, there is nobody to practice with.

@SOCO TROCO Practice with lingb biggest thing is to focus on massive input. Later on practice speaking. After you get the language in you. Build your comprehension and listening skills to a high level. Ajatt method that's what im doing for german.

I took 2 years to speak German. I learnt only from always speaking even if I was wrong. I haven't spoken German for 40 years but if I speak to German people now, they think that I am German. So. I think speaking is the key.

Für Deutschlerners ist das sehr wichtig, so wunderbare YouTube Sendung anzuschauen. So schnell wie möglich werde ich nach Berlin fahren und werde ab und zu dort darüber nachdenken, dass ihr im Moment vielleicht jemanden irgendwo in der Nähe interviewen ;) Ich erinnere mich an die Zeit, wenn ich nicht ohne Subtiles euren Videos schauen konnte. Jedes Video hab' ich zwei- oder dreimal angeschaut und viele neue Worte geschrieben. Jetzt kann ich gar ohne Subtiles anschauen, verstehe fast jedes Wort. Ich bin begeistert. Dankeschön!

I've been learning German off and on since I was 16 (10 years now) and I've never been able to dedicate enough time to consistently learn. It shocks me that I can't conjure up enough words to talk in depth about something but I understand 90% of what Cari and Janusz are saying. Wish I had more time and a legitimate reason to go to Germany!

I am very fortunate in that i understood everything and can speak and write in German. As a young kid..growing up in Sydney Australia..my dad spoke German to me so it was really my first language i heard from a very young age. Its amazing how easy it is to learn any language if you are introduced to it very early on in life. The older you get the harder it becomes. Even polyglots no matter how good they are..rarely speak fluently..grammatically correct and with a perfect accent. Those that can are truly gifted.

Janusz sometimes asks people some philosophical questions but most people do not understand the weight of the question. However, they reply and the replies are so funny. Go ahead philosopher Janusz

Ich finde Janusz' Lebenslauf echt beeindruckend und mag den Fakt, dass er vorher solche praktischen Berufe wie Nachtwächter und Kraftfahrer gearbeitet hat. Euren ganzen Kanal finde ich übrigens klasse aufgebaut und mag eure natürliche Art. Ich bin selbst Deutschlehrerin in Berlin und empfehle meinen Schülern immer gern eure Videos und schaue mir selbst die eine oder andere Erklärung mal ab.

I have dream to study in Germany. I have been investing myself to learn German since September 2021 and joined Goethe class for A1 level. Although it's hard for me to understand at first, but I always have mindset 'slowly, but surely'. No matter how hard the language, what I found in common is 'getting used to the sound' like you are a kid or a parrot. I hope I can be in Germany next year and I'm proud that I'm not that clueless about Deutsch! Thank you. I regularly listen to your podcast which improves my listening skill, at least to make the words familiar in my ears.

Lieber Janusz, ich bin auch 1984 nach Deutschland gekommen und habe 13 Jahre in Berlin gelebt.Als Kind habe ich auch oft in meiner von Deutschen gegründeten Heimatstadt (Petrópolis in Brasilien) Deutsch gehört, nichts verstanden und gedacht: eines Tages werde ich diese Sprache verstehen. Heute bin ich Lehrerin, Dolmetscherin und Übersetzerin in Rio und liebe die Sprache immer noch so sehr. Ich habe das Interview sehr gern gehört und musste dabei an einen wunderschönen polnischen Film denken, den ich in den 90er Jahren in Berlin gesehen habe: "Überall ist es besser, wo man nicht ist". Danke für eure fantastische Arbeit.

Ja, das ist oft ein Problem mit Sprachen lernen. Du verstehst alles, kannst aber nicht sprechen. Ich probiere wie viel wie möglich sprechen und schreiben. Es hilft.

I need subtitles!

How come you can't speak it but you can comprehend it? Can't mimic and copy natives? You can hear words and get the meaning from them. Now just reverse engineer that and turn meaning into words.

@Brendon im doing German Studies now at university, that's normal when you start. I am at the stage I can basically understand it full when I hear it, and write a bit (but stumble with word order still) but can not speak it yet, unless I am reading it out loud. I find I speak only a little but only if a German speaks to me first.

Wasfür einen wunderschönen isländischen Namen hast du denn! Ich habe selbst Schwedisch und Norwegisch gelernt weil ich immer von der nördlichen Kultur fasziniert war und wollte immer auch Isländisch lernen. I always find stories of this nature encouraging, as a lesson of how someone learns another language, much less ends up moving to another country and living there. A lot of lessons to be learned here. Meanwhile, thinking about another languages vernaculars or slang, that can be an area rife for misunderstandings. That is especially so when one has not lived in the other country and become socialized to the way these vernacular phrases are used. There is a dictionary of over 400 meanings for the work F***K! Ich bin Russine und für mich ist es besonders interessant zu erfinden, wie war es in Polen mit der russischen Sprachen....ja, das war natürlich nicht so toll russische Sprache zu lernen, weil man nie Ziel dafür sah.. Das ist doch fast unglaublich wie die Geschichte von Janusz meinen eigenen Erfahrungen beim Fremdsprachenlernen ähnlich ist. Ich bin zwar ein paar Jahre jünger, aber habe auch in einem Land gelebt, wo man nicht glaubte, dass man überhaupt eine Fremdsprache lernen kann; ich habe Englisch von allein erst mit dreißig gelernt, und das war auch meine Leidenschaft und eine Mission. Und auch Deutsch habe ich im Selbststudium gelernt, und damit habe ich erst angefangen, als ich schon fast fünfzig war. Dankeschön für das Video, es war sehr interessant.

Janusz wymiatasz ! Rozmawiasz praktycznie jak Niemiec. Jak ja się uczę, to nie jestem w stanie tych wszystkich konstrukcji gramatycznych zastosować. Po hiszpańsku mówię biegle, po angielsku bardzo dobrze, ale po niemiecku idzie mi jak krew z nosa :)

One, I thought Janusz was German. 2, I really like you two as a couple, and 3, I love guitar players and would like to know so much more about Janusz' guitar playing. I always wanted to stay in Germany where I lived for a while, but I could not which made me very unhappy - so I went to Kanada and stayed here. Germany is still my favorite country and german language is most beautiful. I also speak French and Spanish. I can still understand german and speak a little ... Someone should inform Janusz that Spanish is a Latin based language, as is French. Go for it...as for you learning your Spanish, you might be surprised to find that you could very well acquire a better understanding of both French and Italian as well. Viel Gluck damit!

Wondering whether Polish is spoken as fast as native speakers speak German. It seems a lot of European languages are spoken quickly in contrast to English (especially Australian english) Just another reason understanding spoken German can be difficult.

Im azerbaijani and my grandparents were born in 1960s.And at that time,ud always learn russian and german at school,because of war.So my grandparents r able to talk fluent russian,and they can talk a bit in german.so they come and visit us,our house in munich and they have already made friends...i dunno why but i respect Janusz so much for a reason...

Vielen Dank für dieses Video. Es war sehr nützlich. Ich glaube, dass eine Sprache zu lernen, ähnlich ist, als Gitarre zu spielen. Weil man gut spricht, nur wenn man nicht denkt, was man sagen soll. (Ich weiss nicht, ob ich das gut geschrieben hatte). Aber ich kann mich nicht vorstellen, wie könnt ihr nicht errinern, welche Sprache habt ihr in Träume gesprochen. :/ Immer wenn ich träume, spreche ich Spanisch. Aber, erhlich gesagt, neuerlich habe ich einige Sätze auf Deutsch in meinen Träume gesprochen. :) Und für mich gibt es auch kein Lieblingsphilosoph. Vielleicht heilige Augustinus, oder Jack Nicholson. Danke sehr.

Ich glaube dass eine Sprache lernen ähnlich ist zu Gitarre spielen* glaub' ich, ich bin auch nur lerner :)

Ob Janusz mit seinem Französisch Hilfe braucht , kein Problem ! Die beiden Sprache , Spanisch wie Italienisch sind toll , ich lernte Italienisch vor mehr als dreißig Jahren und es ist jetzt meine lieblingssprache .

Cari und Janusz sind ja wirklich die Besten. Dieses Video hat mir aber besonders gut gefallen. Ich spreche auch viele Sprachen und Deutsch ist meine Lieblingsfremdsprache. Ihr sprecht beide ganz klar und deutlich. Es macht mir immer eine große Freude, Euch zu hören. (Manuel ist übrigens auch sehr gut!) Mich haben die Teile über die Fehler, die Janusz macht, auch sehr interessiert. Ich spreche auch etwas Polnisch und habe mich oft gefragt, was er von diesen trennbaren Verben denkt. Ich frage mich auch, was er von den bestimmten und unbestimmten Artikeln denkt und ob er Probleme damit hat. Ich habe bein ihm nämlich keine bemerkt. Byłbym zainteresowany. Meine Muttersprache ist Englisch und ein polnischer Freund von mir, der sehr gut Englisch kann, hat gesagt, dass das das Allerschwierigste für ihn wäre. Noch eine Frage: Wann hat er Geburtstag? Er hat gesagt, er wird bald 61. Ich habe auch in den nächsten Tagen Geburtstag -- vielleicht am gleichen Tag? "Polnisch ist die Sprache meiner Gedanken" -- die Formulierung dieses Satzes gefällt mir. Dieses Video hatte einige sehr interessanten Themen. Ich glaube, Janusz hat mehr Zeit gebraucht um seine Gitarre Beeinflussungen und Lieblingsphilosopheren zu erklären. Wenn er hat auf Englisch geflucht, hab ich laut gelacht. Ich liebe auch die Deutschen Dokus, die Stimmen sind so oft entspannt und klar, und die Themen interessant. Es ist auch gut und schwer zu sehen, nach so vielen Jahren, einige Deutschen Grammatik Regeln und Worter kommt manchmal einfach gar nicht so einfach. Deutsche Sprache, Schwierige Sprache haha. I fervently hope that new German words will be invented to take the baton from modern English words which have been borrowed into modern-day German. That way Examples: the English word Show, as in Night Show or Heute Show, should have a proper German equivalent - I have seen Schau used in the same place, albeit rarely. Another would be Smalltalk. I might suggest something like Sagflattern, which is comprised of 1. Sag-, a prefixative particle, to indicate the idea of talking, making conversation (barks back to "sage", to say) - and 2 Flattern - flutter of words (fr. Flattern, noun, neuter: a flutter) Therefore, this new word I humbly propose for small talk is intended to have a few layers of meaning. Sagflattern does not simply mean small talk. It would imply that small talk is a verbal flutter or a gentle starter of conversation (like butterflies fluttering wings in preparation for flight), after which serious exchange may or may not take flight.

Ich glaube die Live chats bzw. zuzuschauen, wie Menschen miteinander Deutsch sprechen, hilft einigermassen. Man sieht wie der Mund sich bewegt, man hört wie sie sich aussprechen - egal worüber sie sprechen, man fühlt sich Teil der Konversation :)
