Azula’s intelligence and skills were also products of her environment. She needed to know when Ozai was in a good mood in order not to get on his bad side, and she needs to be able to manipulate people in order to not bear the brunt of Ozai’s abuse. Her brain was hardwired on survival, and she used the survival tactics she learned at home to defeat Team Avatar and to best Zuko.

I disagree with you saying Ursa didn’t really think Azula was a monster. To an extent, she definitely did. Throughout the show Ursa never has a single positive interaction with Azula. At one point she says “what is wrong with that child” while Azula was within earshot. Her actions told Azula she was a monster. And that further alienated Azula from the rest of her family, aside from Ozai. Ursa may have been a good parent to Zuko, but she did nothing for Azula. Other than that minor gripe, fantastic video. Also I haven’t read the comics yet, so please don’t spoil them in the replies

I never even noticed Katara bringing her mother up so much until I started watching analyzes videos. But that's probably because of my concentration problems? I also think it may be because I like listening to people ranting about what's bothering them, I want people to let out all their emotions, even if I myself am someone who really bottles up my feelings. Today I was day dreaming of opening this place where people could come and talk about their feelings with me and other people who also feel like being there, maybe with some music and amazing food to enjoy, play games with some strangers and relax. But I could never considering I won't have enough money to do such a thing? Sorry for this stupid, unnecessary comment :)

Azula always pushed herself to be perfectionist to please her father who hates weak and emotional people. Once anything doesn't gone her way, she will be mad even for simple thing. Remember the time she's mad when one of her hair out of place when practicing lightning? Or the time whem she made the tides speech? And after her father told her to stay in Fire Nation, she's completely losing her mind, for freaking over a cherry pit and banished the servant, banished one of her twin teachers who suggest to postpone the coronation and banished The Dai Li, the elite Earth Kingdom bodyguards! So, her mental breakdown implied that being perfectionist is totally wrong. Sometimes I feel like I'm Azula who needs to be perfect in every time but then again, nobody is perfect. Accident can be happen. Meanwhile, Katara is not a prodigy like Azula and Toph, she's the fast learner because of her survival insticts and she has brains and creative ways to fight. In Book 3, Katara becomes the Master of Waterbending and even uses Bloodbending in 2 different episodes. She's never push herself to be perfect, she's always get new technique from her journeys like Healing, Freezing, Bloodbending, Plantbending, Sweatbending and finally defeating Azula in Sozin's Comet!

1:15 what about when Ursa says "what's wrong with that child?" to herself in the flashback in Zuko Alone? Maybe she was out of earshot in that example, maybe not... but if she was prone to making that kind of comment casually, im sure Azula could pick up on that. her paranoia isn't baseless -- i think it actually helps the writing. her mother loved her, and did her best, but she wasn't a perfect parent either.

I don't think a lot of people realise how traumatizing it is to lose a parent. There are thousands of fictional characters that went through awful things and don't show nearly as much as emotion as Katara. So people say she is annoying or she brings up her mother too much. Like everyone in Naruto have sad backstories that are so over the top it isn't relatable or realistic anymore so people get annoyed when Deku, a character that has been bullied almost all their life cries... when that is pretty normal. Being bullied is still traumatic. Losing one parent and growing up in a war is way more traumatic than people think, too. It also annoys me when people are like ''Well Aang lost all of his people and he doesen't bring it up as much or show that much trauma'' when that's just not how Aang deals with that kind of stuff and that doesen't mean that Katara's emotions are not valid. She always brings up her mother because that's how she relates to people that the war has hurt. She also shows understanding and emphaty towards them because she knows how painful it is to lose people you love. When she tells Sokka that he didn't love her mother like she did it was in the heat of the moment, she wasn't trying to hurt him.

i dont think we got the same thing..... i interpreted that scene as azula, the real azula in place of her mom. Azula is a child. AZULA IS ZUKO'S LITTLE SISTER......... ZUKO WAS WHAT 16? AZULA IS 14....... THATS STILL A CHILD....... every single thing she has done that far in the show, i believe was done to solely impress her father, azula never had her own self id........ just what was told to her by ozai........ azula's mom in that scene is nothing but the true azula. thats azula telling herself she always loved her, she never stopped etc.... thats azula's guilt coming out...... specifically because azula says, "you think im a monster"... that scene, to me, was azula projecting and showing a her own internal conflict with cognitive dissonance

Watching this breakdown is vaguely concerning, mostly for the points brought up about her childhood. Why? Because my family had a similar thing It was pretty much a non-physical war between my father and my mother, my father hated my mother, my mother....was tolerating of my father, she didn't like him, she wanted to but she couldn't, and my father often vilified her and manipulated my sister into hating her, it was only when my sister was put into foster care from that hate (we had moved out away from my father, and my sister was losing it), the difference is my mother didn't disappear obviously I still live with my mother and I despise my father, my mother was a lot more forgiving towards him and his actions, so didn't purely vilify him, but the things he did to her always angered me, He basically banished her to her room and I had minimal contact and my father neglected me to focus on my sister, essentially making it so I didn't have parents in a way up until age 10, and that's on top of moving every year so I'm concerned as to my sister's mental state, she seems more well off obviously because this didn't all happen under the royal family of an oppressive regime like Azula but it does concern me

I’m not a cryer but I genuinely cried at three points in ATLA. First was obviously iroh’s leaves from the vine. Second was all through appa’s lost days. And the last one was definitely Azula screaming-crying at the very end after Katara defeated her. These three are very emotional but the last one is much more subtlety emotional. It didn’t get to me when I first watched it, but watching it a second time it really got to me.

I just rewatched the last episode of book two: earth, the battle in the crystal caves, and noticed that they teens initial split male/female, Aang vs Zuko, Katara vs. Azula, but Aang was besting Zuko and Katara pretty well had Azula on the ropes, until Zuko interfered and the siblings switched opponents. So even before Azula spiraled down, Katara possibly could have beaten her.

I honestly have mixed feelings about how emotional Katara is. I don't hate that she's upset about her mom, I just hate the way she treats Sokka because of it. She says Sokka didn't love their mother the same way she did all because he didn't want to avenge her? She also just makes it seem like it didn't affects Sokka because "haha funny Sokka stupid haha" and it's kinda bothersome to me. I don't think it's a bad thing she's upset, I just wish she didn't let it shape everything. But I've never lost anyone close to me so I've never had to be put through this so take everything I say with a grain of salt. I also just think it's kinda creepy that Sokka sees Katara as his mom and treats her like a mom despite being the older sibling and it's super easy to forget Katara's actually the youngest but that might just be me.

I know you said you wouldn’t discuss the comics, but i do want to add that another reason Ozai always treated zuko poorly was because Zukos mother told Ozai that she wished he wasn’t the father of zuko. After that Ozai told her because of that he would never treat zuko as his own.

I've never noticed this paralel but one day everyone was talking about how Zuko had horrible life and Azula was like.. okay.. just another psychopat.. like no.. Azula had maybe worse life than Zuko. Yes, Zuko was treated like sh*t after Ursa left and the only one who actually cared about him was Iroh.. but he had at least him. Azula had noone who would support her and help her with her own problems and so on. This video is just great. The emotional abuse Azula got from Ozai was maybe worse than his physical abuse he gave to Zuko. Because Zuko could deal with everything thanks to Iroh. Azula just couldn't and when she lost everything, all she could do was cry and call her mother who wasn't there anymore...

I think people who like them is because the characters who do not show emotions or weakness will make an interesting payoff once they do explode. Maybe not always sympathize, but understand. Most of the people who start out watching the series, they think that she is just a girl. The love interest of the protagonist and that's it. That she is very feminine. Katara is more than that. She lost her mother and technically her father as well. As Iroh said, the people of the water tribe adapt to changes. Whenever something bad happened it was her who tried to keep everything together. Always caring about each member of the group. She is more than someone who behaves like a mother, she is powerful, versatile and dangerous but full of love. I will never meet someone as emotionally strong as her. Appreciate her!!

I really hope people change their views on Katara being "weak" because she is "too emotional" and come to understand that being able to talk about your feelings and thoughts to others is a great way to deal with stress, something I wish I could do more in my life. I absolutely love the character of Katara and Azula and I hope people come to understand why some people act the way they do based on the environment they grew up in. I really enjoy watching your analysis videos on avatar the last Airbender is one of the best shows and I think you have one of the best challenge channel dedicated to this show. Although I want to make a request if you could make one video about the parallels between Zuko and Sokka. I know some people like to draw parallels between Zuko and Aang, but there’s also an interesting parallel with him and soccer too. Both of them are older brothers to a talented younger sister, and most importantly both of these to try to prove themselves in their journey at most as a strong capable leader. When they both parrot off in that prison episode and season three while they both started off kind of awkward in their interaction they learn from each other and they teach each other about pressing further working hard and try to making up for your mistakes and doing what’s right. It honestly makes me wish they had more story together more episodes of them interacting, even in the episode after when they are out camping again Zuko actually learn to let loose and actually tell a joke kind of like Sokka. I know your analysis would probably be better. This issomething that came to mind previously and I was curious if anyone else thought this as well.

Good video, did you forget to mention that both are more powerful then their brothers? I have some disagreements with you, though. 1. Ursa didn't die, as such. She just left. 2. Ursa would always speak harshly to Azula and say "What is wrong with that girl?" Don't get me wrong, Ursa was a great parent, but she had faults, and she (unknowingly) played a part in Azula's path to insanity, or as Jeong-Jeong would say; 'Being torn apart, then fall into the clutches of savagery.' 3. It was never stated that Ozai told Azula not to trust her mother, Azula simply found meaning in her mother's actions that brought her to that conclusion, which brings me back to my second point. 4. I personally don't think Azula was joking about her 'She was right of course, but it still hurt.' statement. Azula was never truly evil, she was confused, too confused to see the truth. And of course it hurt! 5. I just wanted to say this bit, not really a disagreement. Like you said, Ursa loves Azula, but, hence my other points, it's Ursa's fault Azula disagreed. Edit: I'm not giving this video hate, don't say I am, I'm simply stating my opinion, which was perfectly legal last time I checked, so I request you delete that comment, you know who you are. Edit 2: Thank you.
