"I believed, I erred" - the belated regret by Hitler's field marshal Keitel before the Nuremberg Tribunal stood out as a lone exception in facing the atrocities of the German military. Most of the high-ranking officers who aided the dictator in his war of aggression pleaded that they were obeying orders and denied any personal guilt. In post-war Germany, where there was an atmosphere of repression rather than inquiry, they contrived the myth of a "clean" military which supposedly was neither involved in the mass murders of the regime nor was aware of them. In fact, many aristocrats in the military regarded the Nazi-Ideology with reserve, but their resistance, also in clear sight of the horrendous crimes carried out by the regime, was confined to a small circle. No active field marshal rose to support the men of the failed assassination attempt of July 20, 1944. Erich von Manstein, for instance, categorically declined the recruiting efforts of the conspirators with the words: "German field marshals do not mutiny".Profiling these men, the series asks why it all happened. Rommel, Keitel, Paulus, Udet, Canaris and Manstein - six careers caught in the tangle between obedience and crime. What led all these officers to put their military talents at the service of a murderous dictator? To what depth was their involvement in Hitler´s crimes? To what limits did their obedience lead them?

Tobruk surrendered because the South African general in charge there was inexperienced (3 months in the field) and had been instructed not to allow Tobruk to be besieged under any circumstances. The ANZAC forces had been besieged there and had required a great effort on the part of the Allies to relieve it. The supply by sea of the besieged citadel had required the diversion of resources and operation Crusader had been very expensive and the South Africans who had played a major and expensive part (2000 SA deaths in a crucial tank battle) in it, were very aware of the cost of relieving a siege. This was not a German victory although shown as such in the video clip. The new equipment and ordinance which was received in the days before the attack (the reason for the attack) had been destroyed during the battle by the engineers corp in preparation for the surrender and Rommel  who had expected to obtain rich booty was disappointed by the lack of fuel and vehicles and ordinance. My grandfather who was in the engineers corp was captured at Tobruk. Rommel is claimed to have told the allied soldiers 'You will walk, walk all the way to Cairo" because of the destruction of the spoils he expected.

Yeah, there's a couple of them. The Field Marshall died in a soviet labour camp. Don't remember if it's father and son though.

As always we get a fair assessment from Guido Knopp - the one thing omitted was his depression which started when he was in Africa but of course there is a limit to what one can achieve in 43 minutes.  Rather than glorify Rommel as many do, this documentary made it clear that the Field Marshall was an early supporter of Hitler.

Any WWII buffs out there? Please tell me, how many soldiers the allies had on the ground against the Germans in western Europe after we completed our landings, and how many soldiers the Germans had. I realize there were are other factors such as the number of aircraft that we had, but just to understand the basics, roughly how many Americans and British versus Germans on the ground were there?

Its not for his family and staff he had committed suicide for but for himself. Otherwise he would have condemned and be subjected to execution for crimes against the Reich. Once approached and condemned with charges of gross misconduct of that magnitude, as part of the Prussian military culture or culture of Kreigacademe cadets, it was customary for German officers in 1940s to ask for a sword!!!

Countless tragedies, deep tragedies, in WW2. I must throw this one on the pile, and label it "Profound". The closing words (last 1minute) of his son Manfred will haunt me.

The documentary is not complete as it fails to describe that Rommel had left N-Africa for Fatherland during El-Amien due to severe dysentry and ill health.. however he was forced to come back as the substitute commander died of heart attack.. not satisfied with the docu :-|

Hey. Make handwritten notes and then expand on them away from your computer. These might be 'report on what you have observed' ; 'make a comparison' ; 'make a theoretical observation' ; and, then 'conclude'. The overall picture is that Adolf Hitler used up people for no real end or good at all. Watch the four-part series Hitler's Last Army. Good men who defied Adolf Hitler were often killed or it was demanded of them that they commit suicide. Goebbels and Martin Bormann were often the hands.

@epicwinface no, he was forced to commit suicide due to his association to the july 1944 assassination attempt, in return his family and staff were saved from harm and he was buried with full military honors.
