Nice video, but just one clarification. Portugal was never made a province of Spain. The terms in 1580 allowed the empires to be managed separatily. Administrators of the Portuguese empire were Portuguese. of course, Portugal lost many elements of sovereignity, but not all, not by a long shot. Felipe I was a fair king, but his descendants started tearing the arrangement of 1580.

Flores, from Portuguese which means "flower" is an island in the administrative area of the Province of East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. The name Flores comes from the Portuguese language "cabo de flores" which means "Cape of flowers". The name was originally given by S.M. Cabot to refer to the eastern region of the island of Flores. Finally used officially since 1636 by the Governor of the Dutch East Indies Hendrik Brouwer. A quite in-depth study by Orinbao (1969) revealed that the real name of the island of Flores was Nusa Nipa (snake island) which, from an anthropological perspective, was more useful because it contained various philosophical, cultural, and ritual traditions of the Flores people.

J C G I do not agree with you. The anglo-portuguese treaty or alliance is much more important that a stricktly militar alliance - it is a trade alliance and a kingdom's alliance. And it has been good for both parts: the portuguese and the english. Nowadays it has helped to boost the portuguese economy. In the past it helped Portugal to survive as a nation and as an empire. The portuguese empire would surely last for quite shortlier if there was not the anglo-portuguese alliance. Remember the threats which could have resulted in the loss of portuguese independence: 1385 at Aljubarrota against the castilians 1639 at Montes Claros against the spaniards, over the years in the 17th century, against the dutch at Guararapes and at Luanda, the peninsular war (1807-1812) against the french and on November the 25th of 1975 against the russian communists. All the above threats were put off, thanks to this alliance (the last stated threat was also venquished under the protection of NATO and Portugal's american allies).

Especially if you are an American... the islands are closer to the US and English is widely spoken (everyone there has family in the US, so they really like Americans). The scenery is beautiful — semi-tropical and volcanic, with a rugged coastline and fields that remind me of Ireland. This video is an extremely summarised account of my national history, and regarding it as such I think it is not bad. However, I would like to make the following criticisms: - The Alans were not Germans but Aryans from the Eurasian Steppe (most likely some kind of Scythian)! (BIG BLUNDER!) - The narrator says "Portugal remained an independent state under the first few Spanish kings, until king Philip IV...". This is misleading as Portugal had only 3 Spanish kings in total, who comprise its 3rd dynasty, the Philippine Dynasty. They were Philip II and Philip III before Philip IV of Spain. Furthermore, though not as evidently tyrannical nor severely unjust as their successor, the first two Philips also oppressed Portugal through neglect, mismanagement and occasionally blatant appropriation and allocation into Spain of institutions, people and assets that represented Portugal's superiority over Spain in many areas like finance, science, seafaring and horse breeding. To end with a positive note: Thank you for acknowledging that Portuguese colonisation was strikingly less oppressive than that of its contemporary empires!

To be fair, King Filipe II of Spain didn't just invade and annexed Portugal because he wanted a Iberian Union, he had legitimate rights to the Portuguese crown being that he was King Sebastian cousin, and he died with no heir. Most Portuguese aristocracy supported Filipe's claim at the time. Also the Carnation Revolution being pacific and happening without shots being fired it's largely a myth. 5 people died when the secret police of the State opened fire on a crowd of people protesting in front of their HQ. Otherwise great video!

Hey, thanks for the video. I would love if someone would watch that comment. I am having a paper and I was wondering more things about the transition of Portugal from a drepublic to a dictatorship in the beginning of 20th century. More extended reasons, also how come Estado Novo, lasted that much? Thank you

Maybe it's too late for an answer but here it goes (summarized): The transition to the dictatorship happened because the first Republic was very bad in terms of managing the country and governments were unstable. The dictatorship "Estado Novo" lasted so long because it included brainwashing the people from infants, teaching them to obey the President Salazar. Also there was a very powerful secret police called PIDE with a huge network of informants that was able to suppress dissidents by putting them to prison, torturing them and killing them. The dictatorship only ended after Salazar died.
