Following the second Rest Day of this year’s Giro, Stage 10 shows the Peloton a pan-flat opening 100 km to warm up before a constantly undulating final 90 km featuring three categorised climbs. The profile screams “breakaway” but could potentially favour a reduced sprint if a team is willing to control the race.

We're delighted to have been able to share this historic moment in cycling. To see a black African rider take a victory in a Grand Tour stage is an amazing sight and we hope it inspires and forges pathways for others to make cycling a more diverse and equal sport! Unfortunately Girmay won't be starting Stage 11 after getting hit in the eye by a cork on the podium but there appears to be no major injury and we wish Biniam all the best with his recovery! 💪🇪🇷

A perfect salute to Michelle Scarpone: Mattheui grit his teeth and dug DEEP, he was almost there, but gave up, shook his head in defeat and . . . . raised his THUMB ushering Girmay to the finish line ---->> EPIC sportsmanship! . . . Incidentally, BOTH riders got a celebratory champagne cork smack in the face🤦♂🍾🤦♂🍾

Brian "The Real Cry Baby" Goossens ... that's a fact!
Vor MonatMark van Beers
@Brian Goossens crybaby, jezus… Go watch soccer.
Vor MonatMichael Nicht
@Brian Goossens Maybe girmay couldve had a chance at victory that stage if he put in the effort, but that's all speculative of course. This is definitely not the 'one time' vdp does more work than others, wva and him have the same problem in a breakaway, almost noone wants to ride with them to the finish, so theyre usually expected to close the gaps. And your 'he cries about it' is such an exaggeration, he gave him the respect at the finish, after the finish and in the interview, so stop crying ;)
Vor MonatBrian Goossens
@Michael Nicht the one time poor VDP did more work than the others and he has to cry about it... if he was so much better than everyone he should have solo to victory. Girmay is also still very young, no need for him to waste his energy if he's not having a great day. Selecting when and where to use your energy, something VDP could still learn and he would win more than he currently does.

As a Zimbabwean who has been watching cycling for 20 years this is so awesome to see. Watching one of our own do it on the big stage is such inspiration to all the young black riders out there. Well done young man!🤗

Got chatting to some peeps riding for Deliveroo in Glasgow that have recently got interested in road racing and riding themselves because of Biniam Girmay. They were excitedly wishing for a Biniam stage win, as was i. Day made, an unbelievably great story. Love how assured Biniam is, utter self confidence and belief that a victory like this was just a matter of time. Inspirational

Wow, this is absolutely amazing James. Representation matters. Girmay is such and amazing rider and a great guy and, you're right, this win was truly inspirational!

@Ken Kaniff Thank you bro. Honestly everything you have stated is true, I personally agree with it. And I understand we Eritreans are a bit carried away with our comments sometimes, it is because of the enormity of what Biniam is doing for such a small country of cycling enthusiasts. Surely tho he needs to learn a lot , he is still very young and makes a lot of mistakes.. he is suited to such a stage as yesterday because of his racing background in a high attitude country like Eritrea but his sprint is fast, we never quit have had a rider with a punch like that. We r flattered by this win and I hope he will be lucky to improve and have a good career in cycling. Again thnk you for you observation and wishes bro, it is genuinely great.

We congratulate Bini and his countrymen on the win today. He was the better rider and won today. We never said he was "no good" but we did say he's NOT a pure sprinter. He WILL win sone sprint stages but he is better at stages like today. It was like MVDP against the rest. The group was too big for him to control on his own. Had to close too many gaps. Amazing that he even became second and non of the others were in his wheel.
Vor MonatNatn
The fact is Fenix tried hard to cut Biniam and they did this early in the game and they failed as biniam teammates were all determined to burn the Fenix game , imagine Pozzovivo doing the lead man for biniam and yes biniam catching to Mvdp attack . The fact is Fenix burned their energy before the climb and that was really a mistake they must regret after . Intermarch were the better team . I must say though pozzovivo carried his team until the finish line and yes Biniam delivered by attacking from 375 m long sprint .
Vor MonatWaso
@One 🌎 whole peace come on MVP much much more complete. It's David vs Goliath!
Vor MonatTim K.
@Daniel Grigg He said he thought the final KM’s would be very technical. As he’s probably the best at cornering in this Giro, he assumed he would have a good chance of winning even though he would be chased down. However, it wasn’t technical at all, so he gave up on his attack It probably has to do with that he sporadically scouts stages beforehand - he only looked at the stage from something digital, which turned out to be wrong
Vor MonatDawit Haile
U should have appreciated biniam ghirmay first.... who he outlasts van van der poel

Feel Mathieu will wonder why he didn't just save everything for the sprint once he'd shook Demare off. Surely his team told him Demare had fallen off the back.

This is great for our lovely sport , My grand grand father would have been super proud now , he ride in 1940th with italians and my grand father again did it and then my father ride with his Eritrean teammates . we have a Vittoria Margherita cycle at home which is very demanding to ride . we have also another brand called Bianchi which was used by my father . My grand father used to brag about his one day victory over italian riders and he never forget to remind us a single event of these years . Cycling is really lovely sport and it is really hard to not fall in love with this sport . I never thought one of my own will win Giro di italia in 2022 stage , i thought it was very very far away but thanks to UCI and yes many European teams we Eritreans got the chance to show the world that we have a religion called cycling and it is simply contiguous one because we are fans who drive over 600km only to watch this sport . I and my wife watch almost all the classics and yes Giro and tour de France with great love . i have picture of many Tour de france champions on my house it is a property that i always take with me where ever i go .Now i can finally put Biniam picture with frame and date on it , what a day and what a sportsmanship by Mvdp too . I remember when i and my friends heard Lans used drags in tour de france ,we all cried , We thought our lovely sport life was over and many Eritrean fans in Eritrea were sad and were seen burning his picture. I am writing this just to tell some of our African brothers and sisters ,yes some westerner who have no clue how crazy we Eritreans about cycling . This is a great year for Eritrean cycling and yes cycling needs to diversify and i believe Bini winning in Gent-Wevelgem and now a stage in Giro di italia will vibrate Eritrean cities for more work .
