Two recommendations - you should highlight the machine you're testing somehow in the performance bar charts: use a different color for the text at least. I had a hard time finding it before the video moved on. And adding "(higher is better)" or "(lower is better)" would make the bar graphs clearer as well.

Vor 3 Monate
MassimoCerreto

@BilisNegra Basically you're right. But than you have to write "points" on the other slides too. What if you start with two or three slides which aren't about secs but they don't have "points" or something like that written on? The viewer is confused, until the first "secs" slide comes up and he can conclude that the ones without any description have to be "points". That's why it's clearer to have lower/higher written on it. Also if you watch other tech channels you'll see it's almost common practice to do so, and therefore the viewers are used to it.

Vor 3 Monate
BilisNegra

I agree about the colors or otherwise highlighting the machine under test. But do you need a "lower is better" indication right after something that reads "secs" (seconds)? Really?

Vor 3 Monate

Fully agreed with that. I would also recommend to put the result number within the bar itself. Without it, it's really difficult or impossible to see what a machine as scored. Yes, to add to the pile on... If your talking about one machine vs the universe, Use Bold in the name Use a different color for the unique machine SORT high to low (or low to high) be consistent with this and label the chart "Lower is better" Shorter is better whatever is the most appropriate If the number matters, show the number you can do this in a couple ways but having bin sizes of 5000 and talking about differences in the hundreds is confusing Keep up the good work, love your thoughts

Does more than hold its own lol. Compared to other windows laptops of the same price it still blows them out of the water. Everyone has just been spoiled by the M1 and forgets how incredibly fast and efficient it still is. Its like comparing a Lamborghini to a Bugatti. Both are still extremely fast and very very usable computers. The original M1 is still good enough for almost everyone, even serious video editors. The only time you will really appreciate that extra rendering speed etc is if you're rendering multiple 4k videos a day, and 99% of people aren't doing that. And for gaming? Well who the hell buys a Mac for gaming anyway lol.

Luke, what do you think about RAM options? Will the base model benefit from 32GB? The reason I asked is that I’m a casual user, so I will not realize the full power, but I like to keep my macs for at least 5 years, and I’d like to be a bit future-proof. Since ram is shared with gpu, will games play better with 32GB?

If you want gaming, buy a PC gaming laptop. We are a month away from Black Friday and you can expect to find some tempting deals from Dell. They are noisy and consume a lot more power but you will be able to play many more games. Nonetheless all laptops (PCs, MACs) are not good platforms for serious gaming because their form factor imposes limitations to their cooling and power consumption. The best option for you to play at the moment is a gaming console. If you can find a PS5/XBOX Series X, that would be the best choice. Alternatively, get a gaming PC.

Vor 3 Monate

I would think this is hardly a gaming laptop. A lot of the power coming from the Computer is from dedicated Prores/h264 codec handling cores, and IIRC games tend to not take that much CPU bandwidth, generally. If you considered an apples to oranges comparison of a 3080 has 10GB of VRAM, which would mean you would have the same max “total ram” as a 6GB RAM board with a 3080 at full tilt. Of course, it’s much more complex than saying 10+6 =16. If you’re not a power user I highly suspect (with pretty much zero proof aside from anandTech’s results) that the base model is all you’ll need. If you really want to game on this then you should go for the M1 max, which is about 2x more GPU intensive and will come with a minimum of 32GB. In my personal opinion I would save the 600+ dollars and just buy a dedicated GPU for a desktop computer when you want to play games. TL;DR it’ll maybe be better for games, depending on what games you’re playing, but a wiser decision would be to go with 16GB, and save the money.

Nice initial review Luke! 👍 But here's what we need to know! How does a given amount of RAM say 16GB on an Intel MBP compare to the same amount of unified RAM on an M1? 🤔 Talk is memory is handled much better on the M1 with the faster bus speed and swap space etc. so it may not be a limiting factor? But what is the Real World experience? 😐 We keep hitting yellow/red zone memory pressure in Activity Mon. as we love browser tabs (2-3K) on our 16GB Intel MBP! But will that still happen on a new M1 with the same 16GB of RAM or do we need to pay Apple the crazy $$$ for another 16GB when we might not have to? 🤔 Look forward to the answer after your further in depth testing, analysis and evaluation. 🙂

Hi Luke, thanks for including Blender on your test. But while rendering performance is nice to know. What many like myself who work professionally in Blender really want to know is how the newer Macbook Pros handle working in the viewport. What kind of Eevee viewport performance can we expect? What kind of Cycles viewport performance? While I am sure many of us Blender users appreciate final render test, as someone who uses Blender in a Professional manner, that's not where we spend most of our time. And as such is not a good indication of how this new hardware performs while actually using Blender. Since these newer SOCs are mainly focused on GPU performance and Unified Memory capacity and bandwidth, running the same CPU related test is missing the point. We know the M1 CPU whether M1, M1 Pro, or M1 Max are great performers as everyone since the original announcement has shown time and time again. We know how well optimized they are for use in Final Cut and how well the dedicated video hardware is on Apple hardware since forever. But applications that really REALLY push hardware to it's limits always seems to be forgotten. Or in most cases included, but tested in a way that doesn't help the people considering throwing down $4k+ on a new production tool any idea of if it's a worthy investment. The old saying is, if you know you need the hardware then you will just know. But as I mentioned on a previous video of yours about how ultra fast Unified memory throws current hardware understanding out the window. Will 64gb of Unified memory allow me to have more available VRAM for complex high poly workflows with 4k or better textures? Because if so then for the VRAM potential alone that would put it above a RTX 3090 [of which I have been trying to buy since it's release with no luck]. But that is a question I would love answered before I go and throw about $4k at the 16" Macbook Pro I would need for my work. Again thanks for the video Luke, but food for thought from a real life Pro user Apple keeps trying to appease. And please note, I say that because I would love to go back to using Macs for my work, but lack of powerful hardware and the move to exclusive Metal forced me to just build a PC, and in the current hardware climate you can imagine why I would be thrilled to learn I could have my cake and eat it too.

Hi Luke. Thanks for the video(s) I love them all. I also refurbish a lot of older macs like you do. I wanted to ask you if you could do a comparison in the resolution between the 15 inch retina display and this new 16 inch one. Basically, I'd like to set my current 15 inch 2015 MacBook Pro to a scaled resolution that looks like 1920x1920 but I find the text size a little too small then. Could you compare if the text size is bigger on the new 16.2 inch display, with the same scaling setting or did they keep the same overall size and you have even more screen estate? If you could put the 2 side by side in a future video to show I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

Hey Luke! Great vid as always - many thanks!!! One thing I would like to ask you for the future videos: Could you please tell us a bit more about the fan noise when doing heavy tasks? I am a musician and beside the CPU performance the most intriguing topic for a musician is the fan noise. My old MacBook Pro Retina 2015 sucked my brains out with the fan noise. My current M1 Mac mini is quiet as a Daisy - just wonderful!!! I am about to purchase a 16“ M1 Pro with 32 GB of UM, but I really need to know whether you notice the fans during heavy CPU tasks. I really would appreciate it! Thanks and please keep on doing that sh***! 💪🏻🤩

Thanks for starting with this configuration. I imagine this will be a very popular configuration for many content creators as the entry point to the big screen machine. This will be the exact sku I will be getting my graphic designer girlfriend in a year or so when they are on the second hand market for a discount. She currently running it's predecessor, the base spec 16" intel mbp (second hand discount of course). For her and many others, they need as big a screen as they can get, so the 14" will simply not be an option.

Hey Luke, great vids on the topic. My buyer decision is is between a base MBP16 and a 24core M1 Max MBP14, my goal is to buy something that lasts me years and years. My only worry is if the chassis (and the fact it ships with the smaller power brick) of the 14 might not let the M1 Max perform well. Would be awesome if you can make a test that answers these questions. Cheers :D

@Alexander Eismar Just the base model. I still do the majority of my work on my desktop PC but wanted a good laptop after several years with a few Dell XPS 13 and 15 machines. This MBP. 14 blows away the Dell laptops in build quality. It's a much bigger form factor, especially compared to the XPS 13. I planned on getting the M2 Air next year, but wanted to try the new MBP first. I'm going to play with it all weekend and see if it's a keeper. If I can confirm that the M2 Air will have XDR, I expect I'll return this MBP.

Well yes, Apple is showing impressive redults with the new chips but…… your results also showed to me that my MacBook Pro M1 is still the perfect choice for me as a product photographer because the display quality and the speed that the M1 delivers is still the best I ever had. And with its 13“ it is super portable. I will never do high end photoshop work on set so even with the bigger oro motion display I would not have any advantage because pro motion is obsolete for people that do no video editing. Also the screen is no big deal for me because that super depth on screen is not printable. And I love the touchbar!

Hi Luke, thanks for nice review.. I am still hesitating which configuration should I pick. Budget is tight so I have to choose between 16GB RAM with 2TB of storage or 32GB RAM with 1TB... (16" model with M1 Pro). I am doing videos (1080,4k) and 3D modeling & rendering (using Rhinoceros and Keyshot, most of the time product design, sometimes small interiors).... What would you prefer? (considering the fast SSDs for swapping memory).... Would be better to have more RAM for huge projects or rather bigger SSD storage for archiving things and ability to not use the external drives for big data projets?..

The M1 MacBook Air has slightly lower performance than the M1MacBook Pro due to it being fan less but in order to see this difference in performance, you need to really push the machine. If you’re planning to use any ‘pro’ apps for the likes of Photography, music production, video, graphics etc and you want a machine to last you a long time, the Pro chips would be my way to go. If you’re using the machine for non ‘pro’ things the Air will give you what you need.

I mean yeah, apples M1 Pro/Max chips aren't the *most* powerful laptop chips out there right now. But the benefits of ARM in terms of power consumption is super impressive and its good that Apple is finding success in ARM based laptops after others failure and therefore (hopefully) pushing the laptop industry in the right direction.
