@Sammy G the shop is test fitting after market parts. He needed a real car to make sure the fit is good. You can see the grey unpainted bumper attached to the car. He's not swapping out the original parts for sale. The margin on that is just not enough. That's only one single unit. Plus the difference between a used original part, and a cheaper new non-original isn't that huge. He's going to be manufacturing replacement parts. That is more profitable because he'd not be limited to one unit. He's anxious because he got caught by the owner. When people rent out their cars, they don't expect it to be dismantled. It is likely contrary to the rental contract. I doubt it is a crime though. Maybe the video isn't even real. They may well be just acting to get views. Maybe they'll start advertising after market parts on their channel later.

This happens with cars that get rented out on Turo kind of often. They rent the car, take it to a shop and start parting shit out. Most owners have trackers on their car though but doing this to a Tesla is especially stupid

I feel like this happened to me. I took my van to a shop for an alignment. I called them 5+ hours later (30 mins before they closed, would've missed work & had to wait until the following day to pick it up if I hadn't called) to see what was going on. They told me "oh, someone was supposed to call you. We didn't do anything to your van, it's needs an entirely new suspension, so the alignment would've been redundant" I go there to pick my van up & they handed me a $50 bill for looking at it & give me a $6,000 estimate for the suspension. Mind you, this was when everyone was getting their taxes.... I trust mechanics just as much as I trust politicians, I dont.

There was an article about this in automag. The guy ended up getting permission in the end. He designed aftermarket body kits for Tesla's but didn't have one to test it on so he rented one on turo. Tesla notified the owner and he could track it so he showed up at the shop. Car was returned in it's original form. Nothing sold. Still illegal, but... No charges pressed

So one scam people would do is push ls engines to their breaking point. Turbo, supercharger, nitrous. Then when they would hurt their engine they would rent a U-Haul or home Depot truck or van that has a ls engine. Take it home. Swap motors. Return it and done. Like it never happened. Eventually they got smart and now have hard to remove identifiers that are easy for the tech that inspects it to see once it's returned.

However, he doesn’t have to physically take a vehicle to get the correct measurements for the parts. I guess people that make crap aftermarket parts that don’t know geometry might have to physically attach their parts to the vehicle to make sure it fits. I’ve found those parts are usually garbage and don’t ever fit quite right. Regardless, dude seems shady.

If he could make the third party bumper look so much like the original that the owner doesn't even know it's been swapped ... then there is no need to even do that. You're thinking OEM bumpers are so much more expensive than third party. But this is a USED bumper. Add in the cost of rental, painting, all that labour, and it's pointless. If he's really that dishonest, he could just sell that third party bumper as OEM. How would his customer ever know? I'm with the guy who said this guy is just making bodykits. He's using the rental as a test mule to make sure of the fit. Once he has the mould set right, then he could churn out bodykits for his customers. Or maybe just third party bumpers.

The real story: guy rented his Tesla out on car rental site; Turo. He got some notifications on his phone about sensors being disconnected etc. He saw that his car was at a shop and was obviously concerned. So, he went over to his car's location and found the renter using his car to test fit a bumper. The rental platform banned the renter. (Edit for more context): if you have a Tesla, you can literally see anything about your car from your phone, if your doors are open for too long, you'll get a notification, if a window is left open too long you'll get a notification. You can also watch the cameras live and see what's going on. So imagine being the car owner, getting notified that all your doors and windows have been open for a while, your bumper sensors aren't connected, then looking on a map and seeing your car at a body shop, then with a lump in your throat, looking at the live view and seeing your car on a jack being disassembled
