Amazing dogs! The judge herself is gorgeous and I applaud her choice. My own breed is the Australian Cattle Dog, mines topline isn't straight sadly (she actually has a sadly very prominent wheel/roach back but that's what I get for going through a BYB) The australian shepherd had an AMAZING coat and lovely paws. I've seen far to many aussies with coats that are super "fluffy" It's super nice seeing an ACD that isn't obese too! At our local shows they're all "fattle dogs" and I can't imagine trying to pass one of those through nationals.

I absolutely love the herding and working breeds. One word to the wise though these dogs are not necessarily meant to be or want to be housebound pets. Years ago I foolishly disregarded all warnings against owning the Australian Cattle Dog, big mistake! My cattle dog was up before dawn and made sure everyone else was up, from puppyhood she jumped or climbed every fence no matter how high, dominated or attempted to dominate the other dogs in the house that towered over her, and made trouble unless she was well occupied. The cattle dog is a fantastic dog but like some terriers not for the faint of heart. I have never given up a dog before but I managed to find a home more suited to her temperament, lots of acreage with a more submissive male Aussie Shepherd that enjoyed her company. It really is not enough to love the breed we really do have to consider the dogs long term happiness and our ability to adapt to their needs.
Vor 3 yearsGemma Webster
I agree. I'm forever telling people the same. I own black Russians and people see them and think teddy bear. They don't realise they're a working breed and require high maintenance and lifelong training.... The other day I got told to give my poodle a hair cut 🙄😂
Vor yearNunya Bidness
The Sheltie is the perfect mix between house pet and farm dog in my opinion. Of course, just as with all herding and working dogs, lots of exercise is needed!
Vor 3 yearsyourbirdcreative
I'm glad they at least mentioned the border collie isn't suitable for house pet.

Tom In Denver they are incredibly intelligent determined loyal and unbelievably strong I fell in love with the breed from ‘ The Road Warrior’. Your dog is so lucky to have been saved and find a home with you!
Vor 3 yearsTom In Denver
You are so right. We have an Aussie Cattle Dog-the red heeler variety-who was captured by a rancher here in Colorado. She was probably feral but he believed she was born in the wild. She was two or three years old when he finally trapped her. When he pulled her out of the trap, he thought "She's not so bad" and called Colo cattle Dog Rescue, which is how we got her. For the first seven years, she required two three to four mile walks a day, a good bit of wrestling in the evening and lots of defined jobs. Finally, at age 13, she is starting to slow down. :) I have never known a stronger dog, physically or mentally.

The Sheltie moved beautifully and had a glorious coat it's just a shame, in my opinion, that he has that heavy muzzle that is so prevalent in the American lines. This is not the UK Standard for the breed.

German shepherds are my life. Mine isn't a show line he is a German working line. Doesn't have the low back. He is my protector and my snuggle bear ❤️
Vor 3 yearsRavenna S.
@Steph S I don't understand the sloping back. My friend's mom bred GSDs for the police and they had straight strong backs. They were gorgeous.
Vor 2 yearsKooteh
@Steph S They are naturally moving like that though.
Vor 2 yearsBelle
Work lines are better. Like Steph said they are ruining the breed with the breed standard

I happily watch all the other dogs being shown in this category but then I see the German shepherd and I shake my head and sigh. Can't believe they are still showing and breeding this things, it's just too extreme and I can't believe they didn't realize they have to tune it down a bit.
Vor 3 yearsAida Hehir

Vor 2 yearsCharity Blackwell
@Ravenna S. As someone who has back issues at times...my back hurts just looking. 😂
Vor 2 yearsRavenna S.
Silvia C...I agree. I think the breed was meant to have a straight back. This slope is unnatural and I wonder if it doesn't add to the back problems this breed suffers. It is sad.

I wish that nobody had to like chop off part of a dogs tail just to get points in dog shows(I don’t necessarily know the rules in this but I see stuff like the Bouvier Des Flandres tail is like that which is now mostly for show and in other dog shows this happens a lot) I think that getting rid of some or most of the tail shouldn’t be needed :(

Dear AKC, The bulldog requires C Section... The Neapolitan Mastiff...eye surgeries.... The GSD....has exaggerated hind legs...its painful to watch them walk. Please speak up...everyone respects you....if you phase out these extremes dogs will live better quality lives. 😊👍 On another note: i have a personal bias against anything that requires artificial insemination. If it cant mount...why reproduce it? How is a dog gonna work and it cant even get laid without human intervention?

Do these handlers have to learn the breeds there working with?
Vor 3 yearsConnie Crawford
michael woods Fun fact- top winning handlers get bonuses for each win the dog gets andcan earn well in excess of $100,000 a year, just like too winning my jockeys make huge dollars.
Vor 2 yearsConnie Crawford
michael woods Professional handlers have to be familiar with each breed’s “ standard” so they can show them to the best advantage. Judges have to pass written tests on each breed they want to be able to judge. These people are professionals. I have shown dogs since the 1950s when dogshows were lesser known to most people. You had to GO to the show- there was no television coverage then.

Vor 2 yearsgmaureen
@Connie Crawford In the UK the name was changed to Alsatian during WWII. The dog was popular in the Alsace region and used in the war by everyone (French, Germans and Brits) so it was just easier not to refer to them with the name of the enemy.. In 1977 the UK (officially) went back to calling these dogs German Shepherds....their original name.
Vor 2 yearsConnie Crawford
Sue Helms I agreed with you- they used to be in the Working group. Probably AKC decided the GSD belonged in the Herding group because it has “ herd” and “Shepherd” in its Americanname. Of course, in the U.K. The breed’s name is “ Alsatian “ .

uniqueusername_1024 The handlers want to have that alert expression so the judge can see ear placement, head space, etc- it’s called “ baiting.”
Vor 2 yearsGreyandgreenfeathers
Because the dog will be judged a little better if giving an alert and cheery expression. That way they can judge how their ears sit (how close together, how far forward, how pointy or round Etc) and the shape of the dogs eyes etc
