The Greyhound is a very old European breed of dog, a sighthound which has been historically bred for coursing game and latterly Greyhound racing. The Greyhound is not an aggressive dog. Greyhounds are quiet, gentle, and loyal to their owners. They are very loving creatures, and enjoy the company of their humans and other dogs. They come in all colours. Their average lifespan is 12 years. Greyhounds live most happily as pets in quiet environments. Greyhounds have a sensitive nature, and gentle commands work best as training methods.
Bondi Vet covers all important aspects related to pet care. It provides crucial vet advice for different health issues related to pets, gives tutorials on how to train your pets from basic-to-advanced levels, and also provides comprehensive information about specific dog breeds and their habitats.

My dream is to adopt a greyhound, but my boyfriend is skeptical about the breed... I wish there was a way where we could meet a greyhound or be dogsitters for one so he could see the gentle giants that they are...

@Martina Sandelin These dogs are very sweet in nature. if you get one fresh from the track make sure you have time to help the dog get used to being a pet. Walking them is easy as this they already know but they will "freeze" when something worries them. Some have really bad Separation Anxiety so you must work on that.

@Kevin Tunaley Yeah I saw this! The only problem is that we live in Sweden and here we have strict animal laws so adoption events are rare and in specific areas, I've found an adoptioncenter that focuses on greyhounds from Ireland. But they are north of Stockholm and they have a lot of foster homes spread out in Sweden.. But me and my boyfriend saw the documentary "Running For Their Lives" and he changed his mind, he was so touched by it that he now is more active about discussing what kind of greyhound we would like! We can't get a dog yet sadly, but now we can plan, save money and do more research until the day comes!

a lot of Greyhound adoption groups hold meet and greats where you will meat owners that can give you tons of information about the breed. I got mine from Greyhound Pets of Arizona and do a lot of the meet and greats with my Greyhound. these meet and greats are also good for the dog as they get to hang out with there greyhound friends and meet new people. more often then not there will be a few Greys up for adoption at these meets. Once your husband gets the learn in treatment from a grey he will be sold ! I honestly feel that Greyhounds have very kind souls and you will just fall madly in love with them.

Help needed! I've always wanted a borzoi (russian wolfhound) but recently i've heard they're very hard to train and overly stubborn. So now I'm considering a greyhound. I'm also a little displeased with greyhounds because i don't like how the fur feels, and if they're much smaller than borzois. I'd prefer a big dog. Can anyone tell me which is better?

Rajapalayam Hound Origin India, big heavier and stronger than the Mudhol, used for boar-hunting, good guard dog, acts rather independently, is a one-person dog, more a trotter than galloper

Greyhounds are the sweetest most odd dogs I have ever met! Unfortunately most people go into what they think is easiest and adopt a lab or something of the kind. The thing is greyhounds’ pros far outweigh the cons and here’s Pros -They are very cute dogs -They’re fine with being alone during the day -They’re couch potatoes so they don’t require walking all the time(doesn’t mean you shouldn’t walk them) -They’re very quiet generally so you shouldn’t have to worry about them barking all night long -They are sweet and will form a bond with you over time -They’re generally (not always) good with small children -If you got an ex racer they would be one of the cheapest dogs (at most places ranging from $100-$200) -Some ex racing greyhound adoption places do things like... De-sex them, teach them lead manners, get them registered and basically do everything you would need ,which *would* cost tonnes of money, to get a new dog -If you adopt an ex racer you could be saving a life as some of them are put down soon or immediately after racing -they generally don’t jump up or find their ways under things Cons -their prey drive (some of them don’t even have much of one and some places train them to be comfortable around other dogs) -It’s hard to get them as puppies (only if you want a puppy)

Oh dear, more false information. They did not come from the middle east. The hounds on the tombs, etc are more likely to be pharoah hounds or salukis. Greyhounds also feel the heat badly and can over heat if over exercised. The muzzles were for during the race. They run with mouths open to draw in more oxygen and any accidental contact can rip their very thin skin. Also the muzzle will stop injuries should they catch the lure. The video itself, the most disturbing is the child hugging (with death grip) the hound around the neck. Dogs do not like this - some will put up with it, others won't and will warn. The body language of the poor hound in the video was not comfortable at all. Bondi Vet, please be more vigilant with your videos and commentary.

I had an adopted Greyhound (retired racer). He lived to be about 14, but finally died from terminal Cancer. You mentioned how they couldn't tolerate cold, but while that may be true to some Greyts, it wasn't true for Flying Carl. He loved running and romping in the snow, and would stay out for longer periods than normal. We had a cat also, and he got along fine, and also spent time with dogs of friends. He was the best dog ever. We miss him very much. Always adopt rather than buy from breeders. There are way to many great dogs on "death row". Save a life and adopt.

They are gentle and affectionate. Sleep about 18 hrs a day. Track greyhounds are essentially housebroken out of the box , but need to be taught to go up and downstairs. They have probably have never seen cats or dogs other than greyhounds, so they take some time getting used to them. They are great family pets.

Once you have a greyhound you never go back to another breed.....greys are so gentle....they become very attached to you-if you give them time....They love you-if you deserve it....they do not"function" like a shepherd...they obey if your commands come in a calm manner and are not screamed at them...And then there comes a time when you think.....this grey must be reading my mind...and you realize that you probably never before had such a close companion.....

I rescued a grey hound about 6 months ago. He wasn’t a race dog but he was gonna be shot cause no one would take him. The video is true about them being lazy most the day but he does have his moments of activity. Kinda sad when your doing 37 mph in a Polaris ranger checking cattle and a black streak blows by you like it’s nothing. He’s not aggressive at all and the local stores love when I bring him in. He can get a little excited and rough around my nephew but after about 30 mins he calms down and becomes a pillow. He likes to play but mostly with feet and hands and my bed is no longer “my bed” it’s his bed since he pushes me off all the time. He is awesome with other animals. Any new animal he meets is his friend but sometimes he doenst realize skunks do not like big friends and well yeah he doenst like baths and keeping a grey hound in the tub while trying to wash him is a major choir😂 gotta be careful when sitting or laying down as well. He thinks he’s a giant lap dog and will happily lay on you😂

Vor 2 years

They have been known to chase and kill small animals. Some racing dogs have been blooded with live prey. They're not chasing that electric bunny on the racerack because they want to be friends. So it's not nuts just a precaution. Not needed 95% of the time but you never know.

For some strange reason Australia has a law that pet Greyhounds must wear muzzles in public unless they have attended and passed a specific class. I believe Australia is the only place that requires this. To answer some other questions that were brought up in the comments: Most Greyhounds do well with other dogs, including small dogs. Some Greyhounds cannot be trained to accept a cat as anything but prey. Pretty much every adoption group assesses the dog's ability to co-exist happily with a cat. However, even a cat safe Greyhound can forget itself when outdoors and a cat streaks by. Greyhounds do shed and technically they are not hypoallergenic. However they do not produce as much oil or dander in their coat as many other dogs. So some people who are allergic to other dogs are not allergic to greyhounds, but this is not a given. They do shed, but since they have short and relatively sparse coats, they do not shed as much as many other dogs. But you will have dog hair throughout your house and on your clothes. A small price to pay for the loving attention and companionship they give you. Greyhounds come in all different personalities. They can range from aloof cat-like beings to velcro dogs. Be sure to be honest with your adoption group as to the qualities you want in a dog so they can help match you to the right forever companion. I guess I should also mention that if you are looking for a dog that will play fetch with your kids for hours on end, you might want to look for a more energetic dog than the typical Greyhound. Although adoption groups are not as strict about this in the UK, adoption groups in the US require that your Greyhound always be on a leash or in a securely fenced area. The sad statistics are that almost 20% of greyhounds who get loose in the US do not make it home alive. So if you cannot commit to keeping your Greyhound safe by having it on a leash or in a fenced enclosure, this is not the dog for you. Greyhounds are remarkably healthy for a purebred dog. Many orthopedic issues that are common in other large dogs simply do not exist in the racing greyhounds. However, since they are professional athletes, they may have suffered some injuries during their racing career. Just like humans, sites of injuries can often develop arthritis in older age. In addition, because of their ultra-flexible spine they tend to be prone to arthritis in the lower back. They do not suffer from hip dysplasia, poorly conformed knees, or other ailments common in large dogs. They are no more prone to cancer than other similar sized dogs, but if they do get cancer they are very likely to get bone cancer. This is why it is often a good idea to do x-rays if your Greyhound develops a limp. Early detection of bone cancer provides a much better prognosis. Although the typical Greyhound is a low-key, low energy dog, they do appreciate having a five minute to 10 minute zoomie session every day. If you don't have a fenced yard, it is best to take them on at least two 20 minute walks a day, along with an occasional romp in a fenced-in area. Greyhounds are sensitive to both heat and cold. So in the summer, walk them during the coolest part of the day and don't push them too hard. In the winter, provide a coat. if it is exceptionally cold your hound might appreciate some boots. Greyhounds do have very thin skin without a lot of fur. It is very common for them to get skin tears. A greyhound parent quickly learns how to provide first aid and to determine when to visit a veterinarian. When large groups of dogs get together, arguments often happen. This is true for any breed of dog. Because of this, it is best to use muzzles on every dog in all large groups of dogs containing a greyhound. Even playful roughhousing can cause significant damage to a greyhound's thin skin. This is why Greyhounds wear muzzles during turnouts and races. In summary, as long as you are able to keep your dog on a leash or in a fenced enclosure, there is a greyhound for you. I have been involved with Greyhound adoption for over 25 years and have fostered more greyhounds than I can count. I am head over heels in love with this breed
