I love this phone so much, it's so simple, nice, clean. Exactly what you need, nothing more nothing less. I love how it's not racing for specs, even the look of it has something soothing about it.

I like Google's software approach! It's so much easier to update software. The fact that Google chose to support better processing software on same old sensor makes me feel confident that if I buy a pixel 5 now, my photos are still guaranteed to be good for many years down the line. Google is not treating their past models as throwaways to keep up with latest hardware technology. That's how I felt about my Pixel 2. Constantly gets excited by new UI/features of the camera app.

I'm on a Pixel 3 and it is still running very well. Really feels like Google nailed the 3 (aside from the price). Front facing stereo speakers, no notch or punch out, solid camera, and great software.

Pixel 4's haptic feedback was the best on a phone I've ever used, and it makes a bigger difference than one would think. So having a worse vibration motor is more than disappointing to me.

I was super excited back in the days of Google pixel first gen, but less and less drawn in by later models. I was in it for the software and the cameras, but the field for both of those has gotten so much better and diverse in other brands that I wish google would do something premium or at least surprising (RIP Project Ara) with hardware (though credit for wireless charging).

Couldn't agree more, Marques. I've just received my Pixel 5 today and I absolutely love it, the software experience is just incredible. Highly recommend it for £599.

Excellent review first time I had all my questions answered. I gave a pixel 3xl and don't want to lower screensize without getting more exceptionally more performance, however the pixel 5 doesn't seem to be that leap.

Basic and well done -- I almost feel like Google is giving a nod to the Nexus days which, of course, was my favorite line back then. I love having the stock Android and even though the specs don't match the S20 I've had this year, I just really like this phone.

@Marques I am big fan of your reviews. Here are few pointers that I noted in using pixel5 with ATT for two weeks. Cons : 1) Its need a hardware update for sure , watching tiktok or playing a game for 60 mins make the phone hot ball. Same is case when I am setting up the phone initially and copying data from old pixel to new. 2) Post clicking a camera it's asking me to hold still for almost 5 to 10 sec , specifically on night or portrait mode. Processing of picture immediately after clicking is also lagging. Pros : 1) camera clicks are real amazing 2) perfect hand fit 3) Display is really good and with great battery.

One more reason they should make a flagship phone is for marketing purpose. When it’s not a flagship, it’s not as cool or as excited as it should be. So the media also don’t have the exciting headlines for their Pixel 5 content which results in perceivably a boring phone. I just wish Google made a ‘Pixel 5 Pro’ or whatever so that people can see clearly how advanced Google can be when they want to make a phone.

Hello Marques. I love your review on the Pixel5. I pulled the trigger and purchased it from google as an upgrade option. I have a quick question regarding the camera. I noticed that in the camera app, there is no longer the camera short cuts option where you can select wide-angle shots using 0.6x, (can't remember the mid-range angle), and 7.0x. Now they have a slider option. this is similar to the older version app. I have the most updated operating system software as well as the updated camera app. I contacted google support (through chat) we went through uninstall reinstall the app, Clear cache, still no changes. Do you have any suggestions on getting the settings back? I did not get any newer upgrade notices for this app. The last one was Dec 6, 2020 Thank you

I literally ordered a new phone and started a return for my pixel 5 because I didn't know about the force 90hz option. The difference is night and day. The constant frame drops and micro stutters from the phone constantly trying to downshift to a lower frame rate was agony for my gamer eyes

I love the Pixel 3 standard size. The wide-angle front camera, front-facing speakers, fantastic camera, great build quality. Sure the screen isn't corner to corner but who really cares, I prefer front-facing speakers.

I loved my Pixel 3 standard size until the battery swollen up a month ago, and been wrestling with support for exchanges for a replacement phone. I got the [refurbished] replacements, but they have been riddled with defects (dead pixels or constant restarts). They're about to send me a 3rd replacement phone and just crossing my fingers nothing is wrong with this one.

Portrait light editing has been a common thing for years... I've had three different phones that has it, one iPhone and two Android phones from different companies. That's really crazy how you've never seen that. Both my mother and sister use it sometimes and they're faaaaar from advanced users.

I always thought my next phone is going to be apple in future and it becomes my dream phone..liked it so much but later Im so impressed by Google pixel. Because now I'm already using mid range Android one phone for 2 years..loved it. So..I've decided to buy Pixel series phone before apple..for pure Google Android experience.

That's just Marques because he literally has access to all of the best phones in the world all the time, so his standards are much higher than anyone else's. I think midrange is more like the $400-500 range, maybe $600 at the absolute max. But $700 is firmly flagship pricing and always has been. The $1,000+ phones are just the beefed-up unnecessarily bleeding-edge versions of the main flagships. Like, the pluses and ultras and maxes and all that.

I thought I'm a pro user until I used the Pixel 5. Changed from the Oneplus 7t pro and eventhough I liked the oneplus it was too big for day to day use. The Pixel 5 simply nails the basics and I'm so glad I switched!

Just picked one up for 350 lol got to love them holiday deals. Actually was on of the main reason I went for the Pixel. At 700 the Pixel 5 is a little steep but at 350 it's almost a steal in my opinion.

1) The original pixel XL was extremely impressive for it's time from a hardware perspective. And it holds up better than any smartphone out there. I am literally still using one and it feels just as fast as the day I got it. The battery has suffered slightly but I still get a full days charge which I understand simply does not happen with other phones after 6 years. 2) Hardware on smartphones is a joke these days. There is literally not a single reason to have the fastest processor or the most RAM. Smartphones are so advanced now the limitation is and will always be it's software. Not a single phone coming out today feels slow. The random heart beat sensors and all the other crap they stick in phones these days serves no real purpose - manufacturerers just can't think of anything useful to innovate on in the phone market.

This is what I like. Decent phones at a decent price. Not mind bending new tech that you will probably be blown away by for a week for 1000$

For me they cut out the most loved things such as: squeeze sensor and the vibration motor. I feel good about them keeping the back quality material. All I want from google is a new pixel 3 feel with a better battery, that's all.

Having had the P2XL, P3XL and the P4XL while passing on the obvious downgrade P5 (even in the camera dept.) while waiting on the S21 Ultra and having now switched, I come to the stark realization how much the Pixel line fell flat on, esp for the $1000 pricetags (my 128GB XL models atleast). I promptly defended them for 4 years, but I can't any longer. Just too many negatives and shortcomings for the $1000 pricetag. Edit: hell even the P5 is overpriced for its midrange specs.

@Nik3 that’s true, but I’m talking as someone who just got an iPhone XS 512GB for 560 euros 2 months ago. That’s incredible value, cuz it tends to be storage that forces me to upgrade, or just the phone feeling slow after a while. iPhones hold their value for a long time and still get updated for 4-5+ years. And the XS is still an amazing phone. Everything about it is perfect but apple’s marketing (and every other phone manufacturer too) makes it seem like you need a new phone every year, and you really don’t. So a less than 2 years old flagship is now almost 3rd its original price, and the new features are nowhere near worth the upgrade to the 11 or 12. Same can be said about the competition

Nope. Phone manufactures have just figured out how to fool people into thinking "midrange" is now $700, when in reality it's still ~$250-400. Most people buying a $700+ phone could get by just as easily on a $350 phone. It's also not like $350 phones have declined in quality over the past few years either. If anything, these new $700+ phones are just becoming an increasingly worse value over time as their previously exclusive features become more widely adopted by less expensive phones.

I have the Pixel 5 that has replaced my Pixel 2XL and I can honestly say I love it. The form factor and the size is great and feels nice in the hand. To be honest I feel that very few tech reviewers give real world reviews (this is the closest I've seen). Internal chips and Ram are just marketing gimmicks to charge more money and justify the cost. We're not talking about gaming PC's here and these are phones, very few people actually need or use the high end features and only want them for the status. I think it's a great phone and I'd never buy a flagship phone for their ridiculous prices

So got the P5,loving it and don't feel conned at all. When the first pixel came out I was debating it but got the S7 edge. Then got an upgrade and went to the S10 last year and it wasn't as good as my S7 (may he rest in peace) and honestly. This just does everything better imo. Just wish it had expandable storage. P.s. Just one Google search "notch; an indentation or incision on an edge or surface." and "incision; a mark or decoration cut into a surface" I clearly see a round hole that has been cut into a surface, hence it's still by definition a notch. Not that it really matters, but technically speaking it's just as right calling it a notch as using the marketing term "punch hole", so yeah.

After a year with this phone I've found I can fully drain the battery without much effort. That's on wifi. On mobile data (even just LTE) it becomes extremely easy to do so. And that's without playing any games.

The bezels have me going for this phone.

The pixel 5 is coolest upgraded downgrade phone for 2020, improved camera and screen, mid-tier chipset among other things.

I'm also using my new Pixel 5, now nearly two weeks and I really like the phone as my first pixel ever, but my battery doesn't least for the whole day. Ok, I'm listening to music(spotify or a radio app) via bluetooth a lot but comparing to my old phone (Oneplus 6T), what it leasts raffly 1.5 days... substantial you can feel the difference . Maybe my battery is faulty?!

I went ahead and tried the pixel 5 today (I'm a current Pixel 2xl user), and I was sad to see that I was dissapointed by it. The only thing i liked was the hand feel, which was amazing. I compared that to the one Plus pro and my god, it felt miles better. I know pixel has it's software quirks, but i feel as if I can no longer compensate for the "Pixel magic. Maybe the pixel 6 will turn out better....

I finally got mine and it's freaking light feels like toy but great to hold loving it so far.

Dunno how the vibration motor can count as "sloppy". I recently picked up a Pixel 4a, and the vibration motor is incredibly tight gives an amazing click feeling when using the keyboard and generally navigating the phone. It's leagues above everything I've used in any other phone. I haven't touched a pixel 5, but I would assume that all of its components would be at least as good as the pixel 4a.

Google is hitting their mark. Around 2014, google set to make their software ultra efficient to supply inexpensive devices in 3rd world markets, like educational tablets on the cheap. Seems the core technology is trickling to current devices, where you can build new devices with older components but still making them incredibly competitive. This gives Google an edge on production cost. You basically can almost bundle cheap devices with services. AT&T, Verizon this week launch a $5 add on to your plan and get a 4a, Google launch a $15 monthly subscription and it comes with crack screen protection and a new phone replacement every two years. Their basically giving their phones away. If this business model of product distribution picks up steam, say good bye to many flagships as pressure will increase for them to become either less expensive or very innovative. Either way we all win.

I upgraded from a Nexus 5X to a Pixel 5. I'm used to "plastic" phones. The two downsides I don't really like about the P5 are the speakers and the haptics motor. But the rest is amazing, especially the symmetrical bezels and the battery life! :)

I returned my pixel 5 and currently using my pixel 3 for over 2 years now because the pixel 5 has awful processing on 3rd party apps (like Snapchat and Instagram) because the pixel 5 completely cut out the visual core chip. The good picture quality in those apps with the pixel 2, 3, and 4 made it on par with apple because no other android had that photo processing on Snapchat or Instagram

Pixel 2xl is still my favorite. I don't really mind slightly larger bezels as long as they are symmetrical and they also leave room for the great dual front firing speakers. I also pretty slightly larger bezels over any obstruction in the screen. It also has a nice non obnoxious camera bump and I really like the look of the black and white on the back. the pixel 5 is definitely my second favorite though
