Designer babies, the end of diseases, genetically modified humans that never age. Outrageous things that used to be science fiction are suddenly becoming reality. The only thing we know for sure is that things will change irreversibly.

@iloveyou 3000 Yes, but they weren't successful :'v I think the genetic modifications were to prevent cancer but after further review of the article in which he explain how did he change de genotype of the baby it was discovered that the modifications didn't prevent cancer and, in fact, it increased the chances of having cancer because of the not wanted consequences of the genetic engineering, in fact I think that was before the discovery of CRISPR, so the tecniques they used to edit genes was a lot more random and could make mistakes very easily

In terms of diseases and genetic afflictions that can take a great toll on a persons life, I think genetic engineering might just be our savior. But if and when we do get to the point of genetic engineering being common, I am afraid we as humans will give into our worst inhibitions. Say you are able to edit your babies appearance before they are even born, I can’t imagine that ever going well with the current world we live in. Racism, colorism, classism, everything wrong with society will thrive in this environment.

I disagree, I see no real reason that people wouldn’t select their children to look like themselves, which is already more or less the result genetics gives us. Furthermore I do not think skin color is important so it ultimately does not matter if people opt for lighter or darker skin

I feel this is a necessary step for us as a species considering the way we live. Every generation we are pushing farther and faster away from what our current biology is built for. A good fictional book that paints a very believable picture of the future with genetic engineering and AI companions is “Klara and the Sun“. The author talks about “lifted” students who have been genetically modified based on a lot of vanity factors versus ”unlifted” characters in the story. Klara is an AI companion who evolved beyond sentience to sapience. The story is told from her point of view, and it’s an excellent read!

I enjoy the idea of extended life but I feel it should be limited not to the rich and famous, but to pioneers that are willing to travel to distant planets. We would need to implement these first to ensure resources, won't run out in the short term but will last into the long term as we invest more as a species into real estate (resources to support our growing population). Without that the rich will live forever and become god like beings.

@Func the Fucc I’ve never understood that supposition that workers owning the means of production would somehow become virtuous in opposition to shareholders. By what measurement would workers have higher ethical standards than shareholders ? If we assume that workers take control of the company, and thus receive a direct interest in its affairs, wouldn’t that put them in the same position as the shareholders they overthrew ? Who’s to say workers aren’t just as keen as competing harshly against others, especially once they actually own the company, and wouldn’t do the same bad stuff companies are being accused of ? Hell, how is not being rich even a reliable predictor of your moral standards ? Besides, they are plenty of workers all around the world right now that are perfectly happy to do horrible stuff because they receive a salary. Why should that change ? Let’s expand this problem to socialism in general. If the problem is the supposed tyranny of a few via capitalism, but at the same time, democracy is also inherently flawed, what particular safeguards does socialisme have that democracy doesn’t that would prevent from derailing into a tyranny of the majority, or God forbid (and as has occurred every time so far), being overtaken by a holier-than-thou clique that effectively turns it into a dictatorship in the name of the socialist ideal ? It seems to me that there is a lot more intellectual work that needs to be done before this is even viable. Oh and btw: to say the French revolted against capitalism makes zero sense, because 1) the system then in place was feudalism, capitalism emerging later and 2) if we suppose, like Marx does, that is was actually the French Revolution as the bourgeois revolution that implemented capitalism in the first place, it makes little sense to say that revolution was against itself.

As someone with ADHD and Autism, I would like for the science to advance to the point where we can keep just below a certain threshold for serious diseases while we are still able to maintain the diversity of the human genome. I would very much like it to be a thing of the past where people suffer from the sensory issues of Autism and the executive dysfunction of both and the host of issues that come with ADHD... Because society isn't gonna change in a way that will radically enable people like me to be considered successful with tired old tropes like "WeLl YoU jUsT hAvE tO fOcUs HaRdEr!" Ok, thanks Karen and Ken... I'll try to not forget what I meant to do before seeing the thing that suddenly became the thing that I had to address now... Oh, wait... I got distracted... What was I doing again? Right... I meant to be doing the dishes... But I had to go pee first, and then I saw that my plant in the bathroom needed watering, and then I scrubbed the bathroom down.... And then I saw that my laundry needed to be done... So I did that... and then.... five hours later and a bunch of tasks done, but still the dishes aren't done... And because ADHD means poor emotional regulation, I struggle to control my emotions... So please... for the love of all human life, edit the flock out of the human gene pool within reason. I don't want other people to suffer and struggle like myself and others do.

It reminds me of the movie "Gattaca: Genetic Experiment". Where babies are made by design, to the taste or pleasure of the parents. They choose practically everything: hair color, eyes, whether it will be a boy or a girl, etc. The bad thing about this is that children are born as if they were robots. Very intelligent, but at the same time inexpressive, devoid of feelings, obsessed with only being better without forming bonds with others. It's just a movie though. But they say that reality is stranger than fiction. It can be a double-edged sword, as many things already are in this world as a result of technological and scientific progress.

@Aaron Luis Dela Cruz communicating might not be as important in a future where machines will do most of the work for us. I just don't think it's possible to extend life as much as they say. Even eliminating diseases that are causes by viruses won't be possible because viruses always evolve. I don't like it though when these headlines give false hopes. Extending life to 150 or max 200 years will a huge achievement for the next 1000 years of human development. Saying that we will beat immortality within the next 100 years or so its just a pipe dream fabricated for some extra cash and that's all.

We should keep most diseases. Keep the ones with a low fatality rate and remove the ones with a much higher rate. If we get rid of them all our immune system will grow so weak we wont even be able to fight off the common cold.

Now this might sound crazy and I'm not even going to take time to explain how this may or may not work but you could go as far as to put your mind in a new body if it ever becomes compromised or better yet put your mind in a computer that then allows you to control and experience things from a new body. You would be able to survive fatal accidents not because your old body was fixed but because an exact copy of it was on standby waiting for you to make the swap the moment that something bad happens.

I think that’s the problem we continue facing, how are we Ethically being appropriate to others while still Maintaining the purpose of what we want. I personally would love to remove genetic diseases from our DNA pools if possible. That doesn’t mean that I’ll look at disabled people as people who don’t deserve to live or something horrible that should be wiped out . I just means if there’s a way for us to make our future predecessors better why not make it our goal in human societal research. However just because I would not look at disabled people any different than someone who is “Healthy” in the eyes of another person doesn’t mean we aren’t allowed to have Preferences. Sure my preference would be for my child to not have disabled features but if they do I would love them regardless. Sure some people might say that’s just a mask to really mean the opposite but people are gonna say what they want in the end because that’s just humans and their perception’s based off of whatever reasons they may have. The mental health part of this as well is making sure we educate others and ourselves that it’s ok to have a preference in human traits or qualities but never with the intent to look down on them for certain color or disability. We all Have needs and wants but how we expressed him is what makes or breaks the segregation between ourselves.

I've always wanted to see myself piloting an FTL ship through space while playing old music but hundreds of years would be needed to research the technology. This might be the answer for me and for everyone to experience the future.

Imagine a superbaby growing up where it's the standard to be genetically modified. It's smarter than Einstein, has the athletic abilities of Olympic professionals, and the looks of a supermodel. This uber being...needs to do ordinary work to pay the bills, because everyone else is also all that.

I just hope we don't continue the trend of things like autism being considered horrific and undesirable. I know severe autism can be a genuine issue, but as someone that's mildly autistic it really hasn't changed anything about how I live. What has changed my life is how people react to me or expect me to behave. We need to stop at helping people, and not go into correcting people for things that don't need correcting for. We need a hard limit on what's morally acceptable, and I honestly don't know if we're mature enough for that yet, which is the only argument I have against this kind of technology. We could do a lot of good, but we could do a lot of harm, too.

You make a really good point. That's why I feel like this kind of technology should primarily be used to reduce suffering. To prevent genetic diseases that severely affect the quality of life of those suffering of it. Also, I wouldn't be too worried about people trying to forcefully "cure" people like you with this technology. They would have to rewire your entire brain, not just alter some genes. That's simply not possible with modern technology, and I doubt we'll see something that advanced anytime soon.

I would watch that happily, IF--and only if--the plot didn't revolve around a regressive theme of "back to nature gooood, science baaaad, let's overthrow the corrupt system and destroy millennia of technology thereby just so that the un-augmented can feel good about themselves." The Scott Westerfeld Uglies trilogy in a nutshell, complete with cautionary anti-applied science worldview. Ugh.
