My dude making such a great job the entire gameplay

as someone who literally played this game because of Markiplier, Inscryption literally scared me because of this one boss that threatend to delete a file that was actually precious to me

It doesn't actually delete the file, as the game could be considered malware if it did. However, deleting the file anyway (or maybe just moving it to the recycling bin or somewhere else where you can restore it later) will get you an achievement, or at least that's what I heard. I never got to the point where it needs to be deleted, but the online guides say that.

It was very polite of them to say something along the lines of "sure hope no one's watching!". Must have saved at least one streamer some embarrassment

Just click windows and copy a file everytime u must choose a file, tips copy the biggest file u have ;)

@Squeak The Swan I can confirm this, what I have read or/and heard game makes "copy" of that file you choose and names it something like [file's original name]_deleted_file.txt (that includest text that says something like "I don't have enough access to delete the file, but you better delete it for fair gameplay" and if you delete (or atleast move) that copy and the original file, then you get that achievement and little easteregg conversation about that with the robot

I choose a pdf of call of cthulhu, because they asked for an old file and it was the oldest in the folder I opened. I didn't feel like browsing much. so I had a card named call of cthulhu. which the boss described as "ancient one". it was funny.

In all seriousness, I just finished the game and it's so heartbreaking to see leshy try so hard to keep playing his cards. Even after the scales are deleted, he still just wants to play his card games with you.

Slight correction on the theory: Leshy wasn’t chosen by Kaycee specifically, he just happened to find the OLD_DATA first and used it to take control of the game. P03 does the same thing with the Dredger which is how he gains control in the third act. Ultimately not playing is still the correct answer. Beating Leshy allows the other Scrybes the chance to find the data first and take control.

I saw something listed in information that breaks down the ARG that mentioned Kaycee chose Leshy to act as a guard for the OLD_DATA, so I'm pretty sure he's correct and he's in control because of Kaycee. She was a game dev after all. Wouldn't surprise me if she intentionally allowed him to have control so that the other three couldn't try and take over. At bare minimum, there's no way she'd just leave it to random chance and hope.

@MoonlitxAngel Except we have confirmation she didn't. In the official update called Kaycee mod it states she reloaded the game to find it changed itself leaving Leshy in charge. She had no control over that aspect.

@Just a fluff ball the explanation the arg disc found was that kaycee specifically chose leshy to be in control cause if the game was ever found he would try to keep it in its altered form. its called kaycee mod cause its the version of the game kaycee manipulated into existence. If it wasn't as a result of her manipulation why on earth would it be called kaycee mod? The angler also mentioned that he once caught the OLD_FISH (OLD_DATA), and gave it to leshy. How come he never caught it again? because the rest of the characters cant actually access the file, kaycee specifically allowed him access to it.

I actually really liked Leshy. He seemed like he just wanted to play a fun game with someone. You can tell how much love and care he puts into it with the maps and the figures and all.

Leshy was also described by magnificus as a simple beast, making sense why he only cares about playing cards. In all honesty, everything started to fall apart because we chose to trust the other Scrybes and help them twart him.

You never realize how useful the Stoat is until you play Kaycee's Mod, where the Stoat is a 1|1/2 instead of a 1|1/3 For reference, the Bullfrog is a 1|1/2, but with Sigil of Mighty Leap.

Kaycee's mod is a mod created by the games creator. Its a rougelike of just the first act of the game and it's mechanics with some new gameplay changes.

@Actual Pie thanks. But I already found out by now. It's quite fun. But the sigil that creates a copy of a card when you play it, insanely broken. Add the one where the card is summoned when another card dies, full board forever. I added both to the ant queen, and by chance also got the tentacle that gets stronger based on the card in your hand. Killed the moon in 2 or 3 turns. So basically... ALWAYS get the rats

Bonus layer to the game without getting too deep into the ARG: Luke Carder is implied to be an actor playing a character NAMED Luke Carder, who serves as the player character. You're not really playing as him, he's created to lead you to the conclusion a certain someone wants.

Strange, he didn't comment about Magnificus's motives, he kinda forgot about the poor guy. Oh, and here's an interesting point? After you snap the picture of Leshy, you can find the bodies of the other Scrybes in his cabin, the easiest to see being Magnificus. P03 looks like a metal chest in-behind the crates, and I forget where Grimora's corpse is.

Did you know that the background text in the final fragment is in Polish? Leshy is a demone / god of the forest from Slavic mythology, so it's no wonder - one of the creators is probably Polish. Before the next episode, I would recommend you to hire a Polish translator ... or google translate 😉

I think the amount of folklore is interesting. Both more obscure stuff that I learned about through the game like the Urayuli and the Ijiraq or more well known stuff like Mothman, Long Horse, and the Jersey Devil.

@Revenant Proxy Yea. Jersey Devil is a yeti-like and bigfoot cryptid. The Long Horse is a creature created by Trevor Henderson for his world. Mothman is a cryptid / folklore from West Virginia, although most know it from popular horror movie. I hope that if creators want to release the next part of the game, they will refer to folklore again. Slavic folklore. Why? Because there is a character (my favorite) who contains the horror of the dark forest (like Leshy), magic (like Magnificus), extensive knowledge about the world that goes far beyond the typically human understanding (like P03) and power over death / necromancer skills (like Grimora)....And lives in REALLY cool cabin ;)

@Revenant Proxy Ah, and there is also the Blue Man. It is mentioned in the conversation with the Trader in the third act. The Blue Man is a creepypasta character (and perhaps folklore - I'm not sure) bringing misfortune to anyone who interacts with him ... Just like Old Data. Really fits the game lore.

What I really found interesting was how there was a powerful blue triangle that helped Kaycee make the game (according to the lore cards), and in Gimora’s domain Kaycee was killed by ice, and her sprite has the ‘ice’ in her head, in the form of a blue triangle.

I recently got back into The Binding Of Issac again and I think it needs a new theory. MatPat just explains what’s given to us in such a way *chefs kiss* it’s irreplaceable. TBOI has been rebooted, rebuilt, and remade so many times now, I think it deserves an extra theory.

Speaking of the death cards, i am pretty damn sure we also met the mycologists at the final battle, the two cards that "betrays us" are close and one has 0 attack, perhaps indicating that they are fused, so we know their names now.

I wonder why they specifically chose a Leshy as an antagonist. Seems pretty odd to me, because that Eastern European mythology is relatively obscure.

Wouldn't that be exactly the reason? It makes the start of the game all the more mysterious and unknown or unique

@2011fan pap huh, didn’t think of it like that. I typically think that mythology references are usually kinda fan service, otherwise you might as well make your own completely unique creature, the better known ones hit a bit harder. I think, anyway. Granted, if you know it it hits.

Fun fact: if you look closely at when Amanda kills Luke, you’ll see the face of Sado, the main antagonist of another one of Daniel Mullins’ games; The Hex. Now, I know absolutely nothing about The Hex and to a further extent, about Sado, but it does show that Sado is a part of Inscryption’s storyline.

Saddest part of the game: not getting to shake Magnificus' hand...

Honestly, I think it was destined. Everyone else knew they were through. Grilles accepted her actions, Leshy got one last game in with someone her probably considers a friend- but Magnificus had HUBRIS. Dude saw he was going out and instead of accepting it like Grimora he tried to pull this huge Yu-Gi-Oh knockoff. His intentions might have been well but it was no one’s fault but his own.

saddest part is not finishing that duel. it was fun. just saying out loud "I activate nox ruby! and summon Ruby golem! ATTACK!"

the game looks scary from hindsite but after watching mark play it i bought it and as scary as it was on mark gameplays it was actually light and pretty much fun THE HARD PART is leshy cheating so you need to make loopholes and plan your moves carefully. now the problem is a ending card game with leshy and all his faces is actually….. easy like real easy man and leshy reward you for beating him By Killing You still which just mess up so as long you got the small tape for the camera that your only way to win

4:32 I believe that that missing eye is the same eye you put in your head. The stunted wolf _is_ Magnificus, in Magnificus’ tower you can see in the same red & blue, and he even references his magic eye, as well as mentioning Leshy stealing it.

I only beat the first part of this game, because I got incredibly lucky during one playthrough. I managed to create a death card with zero summoning costs and the mice-sigil (so once drawn in a fight, I basically had an infinite amount of them). - During the playthrough I also got the squirrel-statue with the duplication-feature. =)

While running around the woods for discs and in the game for the sweet meta lore sounds nice and all, I’d prefer a version of this game where I can just play some fun card game with one of the most committed DM’s I’ve seen in a long while.

Daniel's working on that, don't worry! Kaycee's mod is a official expansion that's still a WIP, but you can play it early.

Honestly, Leshy seems like a pretty chill dude.

This is actually a pretty solid rundown of the basics of Inscryption's story.

I'm surprised so many players seem to have overlooked such an obvious detail. Faced with a cuckoo clock with two compartments so many youtube gamers seem to solve the puzzle that opens the bottom one but not the simple one that opens the top one. I mean it's a cuckoo clock, put all the hands on 12 & what do you suppose happens?

I've tried that and nothing happened. Did I miss something subtle?

I watched a show on netflix as I went through every single combination possible. I did the same thing on the safe and the wizards staff.

I wish Markiplier would finish the game. Really loved his series playing Inscryption.

Kaycee didn't leave Leshy in charge. In part 2, the fisherman tells you he made Leshy very happy because he caught the "old_fish." Also, when you're in the wizard's tower, you can move into the corners on some floors and will pass through a secret doorway. One of them puts you in a room with a giant DOD id hanging there of that guy from the redacted files.

That moment when you want to see more Inscryption by Markiplier and more FNAF by Game Theory and they both do the opposite. Great episode, really. Love this game but damn

Such a great game. The story and style is awesome but the core game mechanics really make it something special. Each act is unique and fun. I went in knowing almost nothing and had one of the best game experiences I can remember.

I don't know if someone already mentioned it, but even the name of the game hints at the "Seal" as mat puts it. while the name Inscryption sounds like it's talking about inscribing something, like the creation of the cards, removing the "s" gets you Incryption, which is a method used to hide data. neat little easter egg hidden within the name that helps expose a little bit of the hidden lore

just saw the ending. i am crushed. it felt so tragic.

Don’t forget the Kaycee mod as it has some hidden lore that would explain how this all came to be.

It's hard to believe just how small inscryption is in lore. Seriously look up how much one of those diskettes holds. I'll wait.

All I can think of (considering the high quality of the 3D models that are used in the game) is that it’s possible that GameFuna made a high-capacity (for a floppy) data storage device that looks like a floppy disk (do we know if Luke used an actual floppy drive?). Either that or OLD_DATA has something to do with it (it’s pretty blatantly supernatural in nature, who’s to say it’s not messing with the floppy itself?).

This may honestly be the best day of my life. I just found this video and I realized that I played this game before MatPat did a video on it. I finally beat you, MatPat! I finally defeated Game Theory! mwahahahahahahahahahaha (seriously, though, this game is awesome and very fun!)

i want it to become an actual card game, mechanics are cool, cards are nice, the sacrifices of your eyes, teeth, all that are cool as hell.

Too late, I played through it day of release :P. After I played Pony Island, any Daniel Mullins game is an instant purchase for me. I am super happy to see Inscryption blow up the way it did, he deserves it. Truly a unique voice out there.

At least with the act 3 boss it knows how easy it is to softlock so that the bonus rules eventually turn off if you take too long.

That's actually the best rule if you pick the right ones to go with it. You can set it up so that it only plays L33pbots when you play something, like, say, an Empty Vessel, thus blocking him from being able to play anything until you play something that can actually do damage and kill a L33pbot.

To be honest, the Lawmaker was the best boss from act 3 due to their gimmick.

Ehh... once I picked that, the boss became a cakewalk and I beat it in few turns.

Maybe it's just an interpretation of mine, or I've forgotten something, but I think it is Leshy's camera itself that's magic, but it still needs regular film like any other. Basically, I imagine it works the same as the Camera Obscura from Fatal Frame.

Glad he's covering this game. Would've liked an upload of the playthrough but I guess it would work better with cuts which isn't common in GT Live so whatever.

@Potato Tower Not the room where you take the picture of leshy and get the new game card. The weird one you get put in after taking the new game card. The one thats weirdly dark and has some strange light that you cant reach.

@Andy Lugo Those are the same room. It's implied that the New Game card was the flickering light source in the room, so it only makes sense that once you've taken it everything is dark.

@Ubi thats bs, because its dark with a light at the end past a spot where you can’t walk through. it looks nothing like the backroom where you get the card and has two corners blocked by bookshelves. you can reach those by going back one space before moving left or right. the new game card is gone so there should be no light at all and it’s very clearly not a candle

the first dev log in the expansion disproves the statement that says that kaycee is trying to hide the old data. The log shows she wasn’t aware of the file.

It makes me wonder what the mage would've done with the old data. Would he have kept it hidden too?

This theory might need to be retouched after the DLC "Kaycee's Mod" comes out in full, not to mention needing to pay a visit to the ARG. Otherwise a really solid base and great episode

I"m sure someone else has mentioned this already, but Luke Carder *knew* Kaycee. He just didn't know her family. In the photos that get uncovered as you go through the third act (SPOILERS): Luke and Kaycee grew up together and shared an interest in collecting cards and playing card games. Luke started the Lucky Carder channel after Kaycee's death, as a means of coping with his grief.

i hope this game and The Hex (another daniel mullins game) are connected somehow. the line about the “blue man” from act 3 could be taking about Irving, a Hex character, and several of the games mentioned in the lucky carder segments are references to The Hex (Secrets of Legendaria was the one that caught my eye). idk, i really love both these games and it would be so cool if they were connected.

Thanks to Kaycee's mod we now know that Kaycee discovered the angler having the old data out while working on the game and, thus, did not choose for him to be in charge

I wish the first part of the game was a but longer. I got a super-op combo on like my forth run, but that first act is the best imo
