The opponents didn't even ask the ball girl if she was okay. They just pushed for the umpire to default Kato and her partner. Disgusting. They were even SMILING/HAPPY at the situation.

The umpire gave Kato a warning, but then Bouzkova and Sorribes Tormo acted on it, overturned the decision and instead had her disqualified. And while Kato was crying from shock of it all, Bouzkova and Sorribes Tormo were laughing at the decision. How disgusting is that!!! I have never been more sickened watching tennis!

I got hit by baseballs, softballs, frisbees, golf balls, tennis balls, footballs, and soccer balls as a kid. A lot harder than that ball girl got hit. It was mostly accidental. It's clear that this young lady is not cut out to be on the court and that the doubles team should not have been disqualified. A shameful moment in professional tennis!

This is a complete defeat for the organizers of Roland Garros. To put an emotionally unstable person who is obviously not capable of performing that function as a ball collector; then the judges who do not see the absurdity of the situation and react by supporting the stupidity and emotional immaturity of the ball collector; then the unsportsmanlike tennis players of the opposing team who think it is perfectly normal to ask for a penalty for the opposing team of tennis players and at the same time act as if it is normal to try to steal the victory. The match should be suspended until the decision is changed, which must be, the referee's disqualification due to a disastrous decision, the opposition team's disqualification and fine, and the placement of the disqualified team in the next round. As things stand now, the Japanese tennis player will be permanently scared.

The umpire actually claims that disqualification is justified if you hit someone with a ball... and they are 'injured'. No way did that gentle tap on the shoulder from the ball 'injure' that girl. Absolutely ridiculous and a disgraceful response from the officials and the opposing team. The pathetic over-reaction from that ball girl clearly did not help matters and simply shows that she should never have been on court in the first place. Utterly disgusted by it all.

Pathetic is right, but this is what this world has come to. Pain and injury doesn't have to be physical can now apply to mental as well. She was clearly in some mentally anguished state seen from the tears she was shedding. I just refuse to believe the ball hitting her caused that. But there's nothing in the rulebook that says the injury has to be physical. Soft kids gets you soft mental state.

Disgusting, there was no malice or intent on what she did. The rules state "shall not violently, dangerously or with anger hit, kick or throw a tennis ball" and that clearly did not happen here. It's absolutely disgraceful that a judge can be so heavily influenced by players.

The two who called for disqualification did not see the moment the ball hit. The claim that he only explained the situation to the umpire who did not see the moment the ball hit is nothing but a lie. I watched the video again and again. Kato was passing the ball to the ball girl whose job was to catch the ball. However, instead of catching it, the ball girl dodged the ball and got hit on the shoulder. She was not crying because it hurt (the ball wasn't hit hard and it was hit from a distance), but because she failed her job as a ball girl and made a fool of herself! Shame on the opponents who begged for disqualification to get a cheap win and shame on the umpire who made the worst decision of the centry!

There is no way on earth the same would happen in the men’s competition, sexist refereeing and an absolute embarrassment of women’s sports. The opposing team should be ashamed of themselves for now putting that girl in the news for something I’m sure she’d rather forget. The only team that should be disqualified are the team that appealed to win a disqualification.

Several years ago at the Aus Open, Nadal mis-hit a service return which hit a ballgirl in the head really hard. She flinched, and that was the extent of her reaction. Nadal quickly apologised to her, and she indicated to him that she was fine. Nadal's opponent didn't kick up a fuss, and Nadal wasn't disqualified. But this here is an absolute farce! Shame, shame, shame on Bouzkova, Sorribes Tormo and the match umpire!

@Victor A. eso no es motivo para una expulsión. La jugadora sólo pasó la pelota a la recogepelotas, debió haberla tomado con la mano. Nisiquiera fue una pelota rápida, fue con revés y muy lenta. No existe ninguna norma en el tenis que diga que el jugador de tenis no pueda alcanzarle la pelota al recogepelota. Si este falla y le da en la cabeza, pues hermano/a, recoge la pelota y vuelve a ru posición que no ha pasado nada. Pero la niña entró en pánico y se puso a llorar, y no por el golpe sino por la vergüenza que pasó. Recuerdo una jugada en donde Federer golpea mucho más fuerte la pelota, dando un derechazo, para alcanzarsela al recogepelotas, y este la toma con una mano con gran reflejo, haciendo que el público aplauda esa maniobra. Pues eso fue mucho más para "expulsión" que lo que vimos aquí. Imagínate si Federer queriéndole alcanzar la pelota al niño, le termina dando en la cabeza... seguro no hubiera ocurrido nada. Aquí el drama que generó la niña llorona, sumado a la asquerosa actitud de los oponentes que pedían una expulsión por "hacerla llorar" es lo que inclinó al Juez de Silla tomar esa decisión, lo cual es muy desacertada y un sinsentido.

As a Czech person i absolutely condemn this decision, both from the officials and the opponents like Bouzkova. Its absolutely unsportsmanship like behaviour. She said that she didnt know what happened to the girl so she went to the referee to tell him to investigate the situation properly, but we can hear laughing in the background at the end, where she is saying at 0:38 "díky moc" which means, thank you very much with a friendly tone. This was an absolute bs, what a disgrace to my country.

Tormo and Bouzkova estaban de espaldas al momento del involuntario accidente. Es muy vergonzoso que ellas reclamaran, Se aprovecharon de la situación. Con todo respeto y solidaridad para ella, creo que la recogebolas no estaba preparada para su labor: a la velocidad que iba la pelota pudo -si hubiese tenido más experiencia- reaccionar de una manera adecuada, protegiénsose. El gesto de solidaridad de la tenista japonesa -que fue a conversar y consolar a la chica- demuestra que no tuvo culpa alguna (el modo en que golpea la raqueta demuestra que no tuvo intención). Ojalá se haga justicia.

I remember seeing Nadal mishit a ball and it nailed the ball girl on the head. She seemed to be as young or even younger than this girl. What did the girl do? She smiled and shook it off. I think it's this particular girl who cried who shouldn't be doing this; others would probably have been fine.

Wow! A little girl took a harder hit to the face 3 years ago and didn't react like this. I understand she was caught by surprise, but I think her reaction had a lot to do with the DQ. The opposing team sure wanted it.

They should fire the trainers of the ball kid. I didn't know faking an injury was a prerequisite to be a ball kid.

One thing that made a huge difference was the fact that the girl was crying. And it was a light balloon ball, thrown without any intention to hurt. So, her reaction was totally exaggerated. Let's be honest. A normal human being would not cry for that. Since the ball girl does not have the aptitude to participate, she should be removed from the tournament as well. I hope organizers did that, since she is occupying the spot of another kid who could properly do the job.

Ball hit the girl on the shoulder. She was holding her chest. She was just nervous. She wasn't hurt. This is as shameful as it gets.

I was a bit worried opening the comments section. But, I’m glad everyone agrees this was a bad call and shameful behaviour by the team calling for disqualification. No sportsmanship at all. If there’s no intention or recklessness then there’s just simply no call for this kind of penalty. Poor form by Roland Garros.

What a joke! This is the new world we regretfully live in. Not only did the player not mean to do it. Not only did the ball girl overreact. Not only did the team appeal dishonestly and unethically. But the umpires and referees actually agreed to disqualify. I call BS

The umpire and referees followed the rules. Plain and simple... If there is fault, it is to the opponents for asking the officials to DQ the other team for this. When the rule is applied - this is the result.

​@JustHazardousit's the refs decision as he has disgression on how to apply the rule. Initially the ump was just going with a warning. He (and the ref) should have stuck by that original decision. But you have opponents making a big deal of it and a crying ballgirl and they backed off.

If you're on the court, for whatever reason, you need to be aware of the ball at all times. That's just a basic tenet of being a ball-girl, ball-boy, or official. The girl was looking the other way, and was therefore putting herself in harm's way. Yes, she eventually saw the ball. When she did, she just cringed and turtled. That's not at all the behavior expected of a ball-girl. She also wasn't struck hard. So why did she cry? Was it because she was surprised that the ball came to her? It was her job to take the ball when it comes to her. If you can't handle a ball being lobbed in your direction, get off the court. We're not talking about an errant serve or a smashed volley. There should not have been a penalty here.

Kato made a clear sign to that kid, to shoot the ball in a slower manner so that she can catch it. It was absolutely no intense or reckless acting of Kato. Another disgraceful judgement.

"You hit the ball and it hit someone, and they're injured, you're responsible for that..." Who's got injured? Certainly not that ball girl. A tennis ball at that speed could hardly injure a baby! Ridiculous decision, unfair to Aldila Sutjiadi, Miyu Kato and all tennis fans.

It's so shameful that the opponent pushed for disq for such accidental action. And the ball girl....why is she crying? She didn't get hit hard, it was a tennis ball thrown with no malice, not a rock, FFS!

This is freaking ridiculous! Kato obviously didn't mean it and the pace was not fast at all! I got hit harder occasionally when I was playing in early teens!

If you're going to disqualify a kid for something like this, don't let him pick up the ball anymore. Kids can't control their emotions. A grown woman would never have cried.

They lost so much in exchange for their victory, didn't they? The expectations of the fans, the fame they have had, the support of the fans in the future, and the glory of their victories.

They even did not see the whole event, if you go back watch the video again, you will see. How they could be so sure Kato was intended. They can not help smiling after the disqualify announcement. Can believe they really care about the ball girl at all. What a shame!

Everyone was ready to let the mishap go except for Bouzkova and Tormo. The ball girl was gesturing to Kato that she was okay. Kato hugged the ball girl and apologized. The ref issued a warning and was ready to move on. Bouzkova and Tormo pressed for the disqualification. In a 2020 match, Federer was tossing a ball back to a ball boy without looking (like he'd often do, and the kids and fans loved it!) but this time the boy got hit on the head, ran to retrieve the ball and the match continued. No disqualification.

I honestly think Bouzkova and Tormo took advantage of the fact their opponents came from Indonesian and Japanese backgrounds and wouldn't argue against the decision out of respect of authority due to their culture. If this was a European or North American/South American opponent, they would have argued back against being disqualified.

The umpire has to take ultimate responsibility since he has the power to disqualify. With great power comes great reponsibility and the umpire failed in this case. Not sure what he was thinking but I'm guessing he was swayed by the tears fom the ballgirl. Her crying like that is another separate issue.

It's ridiculous. It's not intentional at all. Judges, opponents and organizers should apologize to Kato.

Unfortunately, in my experience, this kind of behaviour is not uncommon with Spanish athletes. Anybody who watches football, be it the Spanish national team or clubs, probably knows this. They have no shame :(
