9:20 Oh, I know exactly what this earphone was meant for. Right up until the mid 1990s, you could buy cheap compact black-and-white TV sets to "enjoy" the absolute bare minimum experience of watching broadcast TV. There were also still plenty of cheap mono radios on the market. So, if your living situation was absolute crap and your electrical outlet placement was absolute crap, you could still use one of these earphones to listen to your TV or radio shows across a small bedroom without bothering your roommates. I'm not gonna lie, I actually used one of these things for a few months back in like 1997.

That last earbud was intended for a low power radio. It’s built to use minimal electricity for listening to an off-grid radio for as long as possible. They can come in handy if you are hiking, camping or in any situation where you have preserve your batteries. edit: the small amount of power would be used by a channel scanner

@Paul Kerton Most people sadly know nothing about crystal radios today. Nor that they used to get so loud they'd have to attenuate them and could even drive loudspeakers after months of use with a good ground/aerial setup. It doesn't 'fit' with mainstream physics models at that point and gets into Tesla/Moray side of things.

7:30 Technically, silver has even lower resistance than gold, so if gold-plating connectors makes them better (not really), silver should be superior, at least for a brief time until it starts to tarnish. Gold is more widely used in electronics because of its unreactivity.

Vor Monat

@ALPHAPLAYZZ Silver is the best electrical conductor available, but the tarnish on the surface drastically increases resistance, which is why gold plating is used. Platinum is often used as a catalyst for various chemical processes, but is not very useful as an electrical conductor. Being rarer =/= always better.

That last one is a crystal radio earphone. If you bust it up it will contain a little flat piezo buzzer of the same sort that many electronic things use to beep. It's a better choice for crystal radios than normal dynamic drivers because it runs on the darn-near-zero current that a crystal radio can pull out of the air. It's really meant to listen to news on a crystal radio during a natural disaster since those can be made with no power plug and no batteries, just drawing the power they need from the AM radio signal itself.

So just a bit of context on that final earphone - those are often piezo transducers originally intended for use with crystal set radios, where you need the super high impedance (because the actual recieved radio waves have to power the earpiece directly). They're not really intended for general use, though they're bafflingly common given the number of people out there actually using crystal sets. Edit: as pointed out below, this one actually says "magnetic", so maybe it really is just a crusty earpiece?

@Opalish Moth it's basically the simplest possible AM radio - an antenna, a tunable filter, and then a diode of some sort, which in early versions was a literal crystal of semiconductor that you'd poke with a thin wire to create a diode junction. There's no external power required, you're just rectifying the radio waves and then feeding them straight into the earpiece. They used to be a popular science project.

They're almost all garbage, the only things I liked with any of those things I've had the displeasure of having to use was the theater had a couple of ancient air traffic control headset/mic that at least looked nice and a staff radio system that just looked like every stereotype secret service headset in media... At least we could be dumb with that whenever the manager left

For those wondering why the last one even existed, It is likely a piezo electric speaker these were used with shoebox cassette recorders for dictation but was designed in the 1920s for old school crystal radios, it was used up till the end of the 2000s when we stopped using shoebox cassette decks for dictation. Since they were designed to be ran at extremely low power that would come from an AM radio station, and because of the piezo electric system they can only reproduce a tiny portion of the audio spectrum, to me a really fascinating thing

Vor Monat
Lucy The Brazen
Lucy The Brazen

The last ones really remind me of a headphone I got in one of those science kits as a kid, where you build yourself an AM radio that completely works off of the power you can receive from an AM radio signal. In hindsight extremely impressive that this thing worked without batteries, and was super bare bones otherwise too, but you could tune into different AM radio stations, and you were able to listen to that station, given your surroundings were quiet enough x) Edit: I think they didn't even have regular magnetic speakers, but instead piezoelectric speakers

Vor Monat

ALPHAPLAYZZ

Vor Monat
time traveler

@Lucy The Brazen there could also be some capacitance between wires but that's a stretch as well.

Vor Monat
time traveler
time traveler

@Lucy The Brazen so I've looked into those videos and the design they show isn't great for all intended purposes. It's neat don't get me wrong but it doesn't use a capacitor, the antenna will have some capacitance to ground but it wouldn't be significant(Am radios need around a few hundred picofarad). Am receivers are very easy to transmit to, if you turn a switch on near them you'll hear a click so if I were to guess the am receiver shown is just using an inductor to partially filter out stations but thats all I could think of. Sorry.

Vor Monat
Lucy The Brazen
Lucy The Brazen

@time traveler I am a tiny bit confused by this explanation. If you put "3D Printed Radio | No Batteries" into the youtube search bar, you'll find the exact one I am talking about. I know that you can isolate different frequencies by implementing a variable band pass, but as far as I can tell this particular radio doesn't have a (discrete) capacitor. I'm aware that just having wires run in parallel already is a capacitor, but I am not fully convinced that this is what is happening there, same with just a single wire already having some inductance. I was just coming up with this theory, because I didn't see where the band pass would be at.

Vor Monat
time traveler
time traveler

@Lucy The Brazen The way tuning works in radio is you have two parts, an inductor(coil), and a capacitor(two plates) in parallel. The inductor allows low frequencies to pass through, but stops high frequencies, while the capacitor allows high frequencies, but not low frequencies which means there is a frequency in the middle where the signal will pass through with little issue, this is called the resonant frequency. Changing the length along the coil changes the inductance and therefore the tuned frequency of the radio. As for the antenna, at AM frequencies there is no significant filtering that the antenna does on its own. I hope that clears some things up.

Mate I've been cracked out on your videos for weeks. Love it. I got a used ipod mini gen2 and some taotronics sound liberty 79s coming in the post. Curious if you tried or have any thoughts on the Fiio UTWS3s, they are wireless and use your own in ear monitors. mmcx and 2 pin styles available. Cheers.

Oh my god I can't believe it. My grandfather had the last earphone you reviewed in the early 2000s. I remember it very well as a kid. He used it to watch to the old woodgrain tv at night without disturbing my sleeping grandmother. It was so long I remember it very well. I'm from Egypt btw.

I actually bought the KS2s after hearing you talk about kbears so often and I have to say I'm in love with them. I'm not a audiophile in the slightest, but from using cheap $10 skullcandy or JBL buds pretty much my whole life, the ks2s blew me away in both sound and comfort. But the thing that sold me and everyone I showed them to was the changeable cable. I hated having to buy all new headphones when there was a break in the chord and would have to be bent and held in a specific angle just to keep one side working.

@SiriusXification i used like a 20 buck kz for a bit after like a year the bit connected to the wire broke a bit but still connected with some super glue. Compared to the skull candies and beats i used in the past that lasted only 2 months at most. People make fun of china for cheap products but like. Every country has cheap products. Just a matter of keeping an eye and ear open

Most of the chinese sets (the ones people call chi-fi - tin, kbear, kz, cca, blon & many more) are actual top tier products. They last years with regular use. They're cheap. They also sound better than most high end wireless over ear headphones, at least for busy stuff like metal cause of the BA speakers. Headphone jack getting removed en masse is actually a real bummer if you're a fan.

I am really surprised that DankPods wasn't aware of mono earpieces for radio sets (like their entire point is that they're just supposed to relay voice). Granted I only knew about them because I used to work in an electronics store, I just figured they were common knowledge.

Fun fact about the silver plating: It's actually the most conductive metal that exists (outside of -270°C superconductor spooky stuff), gold is actually in third place behind copper for conductivity. But gold is almost-perfectly corrosion resistant so it maintains a clean connection, so for connectors that are regularly plugged in and out and mounted with fairly low pressure it's great. Silver is theoretically better for something you connect once and tighten in place and also isn't really exposed to the elements, but if designed and constructed properly there isn't a noticeable difference either way

4:00 This packaging is pretty common for mass produced electronics parts from shenzhen. i'm pretty sure there is a huge factory that pumps them out by the boat load, and you can have them print whatever you want. most of the nicer shenzhen cables i get come in this resealable package thats all the exact same size.

Several years ago, I built a crystal radio (AM radio powered exclusively by the radio waves) and you had to listen to it through an earphone very similar to the last one on this video. The reason for using it was that it used a piezoelectric system which required very little power hence making it perfect for the radio. Fun project.

Those earphones work great on crystal sets where most of the signal is higher pitched. People don't know that some crystal sets increase volume over time to point you have to attenuate it AND to the point where they could be used to drive loudspeakers (ANd need attentuation!). The power increases over months of use with good ground etc. They don't cover that one with primitive Hertzian physics funnily enough ;) Tesla/Moray knew the way though.

Oh hey, I actually have those cheap KBear buds, they're... well, they meet my needs. Plugs into my mp3 player, does not plug up my ear canals (I just hate the feel), doesn't break the bank, can buy in bulk for easy replacing, has at least *heard* of bass. And I can get them in blue :D And, from the sounds of it, I made a *really good choice* there.

That single earbud thing isn't the worst I've ever seen/heard, so this one time I was in japan on a tour of some national park and we had these weird radio communication things with the tour guide and a single earphone. Black. Made of Plastic. The tip is literally SHARP. There was absolutely no cushioning, just a pointy black plastic tip that you could probably pierce your eardrums with. And you can probably imagine it wasn't too comfortable
