Not only is all of Mysterio’s “evidence” completely inadmissible, but even if the EDITH program doesn’t keep logs of users and orders, which seems unlikely, there should be TONS of *counter* evidence proving Quentin Beck was a grifter and the real villain. For one thing, Quentin Beck, if that’s even his real name, was a former Stark employee, so Happy should’ve been able to pull up his employee file and show the world Beck was a hologram technician fired for being unstable, not an interdimensional soldier. For another, Flash Thomson was able to livestream the entire London attack, so there should be ample security footage showing the drones emerging from Mysterio’s weather monster. Not to mention that someone would’ve had to recover Mysterio’s body, and would’ve found that he wasn’t wearing the futuristic supersuit he was shown wearing in his dying video, but rather a suit covered in AR patches and hologram projectors.

I agree with much of this excerpt the government would never allow the information that they didn't properly vet Mysterio get out. The public would always believe he was from another universe even if they had to get a skrull to pretend to be this universe's beck. What I think is strange is Peter had many abilities including the use of drones, holograms,, and skrulls to "prove" he wasn't super-man. They can literally be in the same room or Spider-man could be anywhere in the world while Peter is in custody.

My theory is that the Department of Damage Control is as much a PR firm for the Avengers/SHIELD as a literal clean up crew. Their job is to protect the public from the aftermath of major events, including the release of damaging information. SHIELD relies on its clandestine nature to operate under the radar. What better way to cover up your involvement in a major event than to work directly with and through the DoDC? Who else sent Murdoch? Either Murdoch works for SHIELD or he was hired by Stark to be the on-call superhero lawyer for superheroes. Either way, the arrest, the fake charges and even Murdoch’s [lack of actual] lawyering was just a show to avoid having to release information they (SHIELD and the DoDC) have that would be damaging to SHIELD, the Avengers and Stark but would exonerate Peter. A less cynical take might be that they were attempting to protect Peter from the fallout of releasing that he turned over the EDITH glasses to Beck but I think the murder accusation is probably worse.

Murdock didn't say he got Peter off, he said he doesn't think the charges are going to stick. (since there really is no evidence of him killing Mysterio). Just Mysterio CLAIMING that Spider-man is a criminal.

Yes, but you forgot the part where HYDRA was exposed as working within SHIELD a decade prior. Most people wouldn't trust anyone from SHIELD after something like that. This conclusion also makes sense considering that at one point peter mentioned while interrogated that they can just "Ask Nick Fury" but they responded with "He is off world for (enter time)." Which Peter's reaction was a genuinely confused "How do you know that?"

It also occurs to me that the DoDC might have been actually arresting Peter for stealing exotic Stark tech; which their own records would eventually reveal had actually been legally turned over to Peter by Stark/Potts. Maybe Peter only thought murder charges were involved because of Beck's accusation.

Fun Fact: Tony does actually bring Tom Holland in Civil War legally; in Far From Home, we see his passport, which is dated 2 days before Civil War released to theaters. Therefore, Tony expedited the Passport process to bring Peter quickly

Couldn’t they just do a quick background check on Quentin Beck and find out that he designed the hologram and drone technology for Stark industries? If they look at any of the drones, they could easily realize that they’re using the technology he invented. The drones have a projection of mysterio in them so it would be incredibly easy to put two and two together that he fabricated the entire thing.

I think the whole MIT angle is him trying to go there to honor Tony in a way, so I'd argue him not finding a way of going at the end is even yet another sign of his growth leaving all that behind.

I don’t even think he knew about the others; his tip was just that they were leaving May’s food drive in a truck. Even if Jameson saw something that HE thought was illegal, even with his brief jurisdiction as mayor in the comics he would have to take it to the cops first. Even when Spider-Man webs up cars, he doesn't want people getting hurt so he's not doing anything except his job to *PROTECT* the public. Jameson is jealous of Spider-Man because he's everything Jameson isn't and as noted in the comics, is a bit pissed for overshadowing his son and making him look like the bad guy, except he was. Superheroes alone had certain qualities he didn't, so he saw them as public menaces despite having no proof of it. The heroes were doing their jobs, but Jameson saw it as them "being above the law" even though they weren't. TL;DR: Jealousy and envy fuels him, nothing else.

Theory idea: In Enchanto, Disney’s newest film, our heroine, Mirable is “normal” when the rest of her family has powers. I’d be interested in a theory surrounding that. I have a small theory about it: when they get their gifts, the kits touch the candle and then touch the door knob. In the flash back where Mirable dosent get her gift, we see her touch the candle and wipe her hands on her dress. She wiped the candle wax off of her dress, where as the rest of the kids (as far as we know) did not wipe the wax away. We know that the candle holds the miracle so it would make sense that the candle wax is what gives the door power to open up into a unique room. So my small theory is that the reason Mirable was left giftless is because she essentially wiped the magic off of her. Im hoping you might be able to dissect it and make it more understandable lol.

@I am Legend The rules are set by the writers. Logic only applies within those rules. In other words, if it follows those rules, it is logical. That is how fiction is. Everything still fits within those rules, so it is logical. When something breaks the rules that the writers set, it is illogical and often poor writing. You can't apply the same logic you apply to real life to fiction because real life has different rules. MattPatt makes theories where he applies real-world science and laws to films and games but he still follows the rules set by the writers. He doesn't say "Spider-Man couldn't get off the hook because he'd be dead from that brick since superpowers are not possible".

Maybe the wish from the end of the movie had some sort of effect on the beginning, since it rewrote stuff from the past, it probably erased the court proceedings so that Peter wasn’t known as Spider-Man anymore.

Okay, but even if getting the charges dropped could’ve been as easy as NWH portrays it to be based on the evidence presented, you’d think Mysterio and/or his team would’ve worked harder at fortifying their case. Given all the work they put into pulling off their scheme in FFH, it doesn’t make sense that they’d stop at the video as far as manufacturing and tampering with evidence goes. Obviously, the real reason things played out the way they did was because they had to abandon most of what FFH set up ASAP in order shift gears into a multiverse story, but I digress.

I think Beck's goal was to use the Stark tech to cause a bunch of damage and hurt Stark Industries overall. Because the drones were basically held liable for the damage and they mention that Stark Industries is in trouble. This could lead into Armor Wars as Stark Industries could get broken up or bought out by new characters

Matt is a good lawyer in terms of when he is actually being lawyer. His problems were not being there for his clients lol

One thing that really stuck out to me was when Matt said “you may not be guilty in a court of law but you still have the court of public opinion to deal with.” It really shows in the beginning of the movie and is especially meaningful in todays day and age

You see, the way I look at it is the plot for no way home although amazing could’ve been avoided in the way that toms universe’s peter could’ve just taken Tony’s past advice and just kinda went with it. Can we also talk about the fact that Quentin Beck pretended to come from another dimension, yet showed his face to the public? Like, no one recognized him?

This is an interesting theory for me because this is something I’ve speculated on more than once, though usually under the idea of “what makes Superman a Super Hero and Batman a Vigilante, if they are effectively doing the same thing?”, my idea is that in these sort of worlds there’s always going to be situations that regular humans aren’t going to be able to handle on their own, so Superhero’s are always going to be necessary regardless of the collateral damage they do as a result.

Another thing to consider is that Spiderman is an Avenger, which also means he is susceptible to the Sokovia Accords. This means two things, 1) Aunt May is completely innocent and no charges can be filed against her considering that, as an Avenger, Peter’s actions are not controlled by May but rather the government, and 2) Peter himself is both protected and liable to the Sokovia Accords. Quinten Beck attacked London, and the Drones posed a serious threat to the safety and well being of the people there. Spiderman is there because Shield asked him to. Whether or not he wanted to save everyone there is now completely irrelevant as an organization/body of a government deployed him there. New York would not have the jurisdiction, or even the US government, can not charge him for completing the mission he was assigned to do (ie find the culprit behind the attacks and subdue him in any way, shape, or form) Edit (because y’all don’t understand): 1)Peter is an Avenger, plain and simple. Stark gave him his suit, he was there to fight Thanos and in the same movie, Tony says he’s an Avenger. 2) May is still innocent no matter what. Peter is not the average human and what could be “Harmful” to someone else, is not harmful to Peter. He can lift literal tons that would usually crush a person, and he has way more endurance. 3) “Peter is a minor and can’t legally sign contracts” would be true except Tony, Happy, and May are all guardians of Peter. “But they didn’t say that in the movie so they can’t be his legal guardians”! Says who? Both Happy and Tony look after him and make sure his well being is safe, Tony funds all of Peter’s tech, and he gave Peter Edith (ie entrusting him with Stark assets). Just because its off screen, doesn’t mean it didn’t happen, especially with how much supervision and care he was provided with Stark and Happy

We never saw Peter signed the accords, so we can’t assume that he did. Also, if Nick fury was a skrull, then it’s possible that the rest of the team was. If so, then shield never gave him that mission.

I never thought of that,but it's exactly the sort of venture Tony would have pursued because he knew everything that was left in his wake and figured it might happen again(it did). That's probably why Tony never got charged with destroying an entire airport in Germany,besides working with the US state department,he didn't have any authorization to brawl with Cap at a privately or German owned airport. Damage Control would have cleared that up for him and probably have reduced any charges that did come against him because his companies cleanup arm did the literal damage control. Genius.

When I watched No Way Home I thought it was sus that DODC were the ones leading the charge against Peter and it didn't quite make sense to me so your theory is totally plausible. I also thought maybe the organization itself wanted to make an example of Peter because of the misuse of Stark tech and the potential damage it could do to Stark's reputation?

The charges being dropped didn't seem particularly strange or improbable to me. As explained in this video, there was never any solid evidence. I don't think that Beck ever expected Peter to face legal consequences, but he knew that the accusation and Peter's identity being made public would be enough to effectively ruin his life.

The problem is this is a world where superheroes including The Avengers are somewhat welcomed especially after Endgame. I’d imagine all that would influence the judges plus as you said there really isn’t evidence and even the Nick Fury being off Earth thing can easily be be solved by contacting Nick Fury. And how hard is it to check logs on the glasses to see he swapped ownership.

And we have seen this play out in real life over and over again and it really sucks.

Could Peter even be held accountable for “murdering” someone from an alternate universe anyway

First: Yeah, probably. We obviously don't have precedent, but murder is still murder. I see no reason they'd say "This biological human doesn't count because he wasn't born here". That would be like saying killing a Japanese American wasn't murder because of where they were born. Second: Beck wasn't actually from another universe. He was a disgruntled Stark Industries employee and Happy could almost certainly prove it.

Well actually he only said "I'm a really good lawyer" after catching a brick, and not as a reason to why Peter's charges were dropped.

Imagine trying to get a jury to agree that he's guilty. It'd never happen. I'd imagine the only way it could happen is if he confessed directly to them and even then someone on that jury would be like: "Ya, but he saved my grandma, so not-guilty!".

I really like how everyone was expecting daredevil to show up in the police interrogation scenes, but then he didn't show up, and instead made his cameo in the scene right after that one.

You know, maybe you should do a theory about how Peter is even supposed to survive when he pretty much doesn’t exist anymore. How’s he gonna pay for food, shelter, etc? Or contend with the fact that people might get suspicious of him when they realize he has no records. I call that theory fodder.

I was really confused after no legal consequences in the beginning, despite it being hyped up. Although it did really ruin the people’s lives around him, it being mit they didn’t make in to is just a precedent.

In Homecoming, Peter's suit records everything he sees. It wouldn't be a far stretch for this to still be included in his other suit since it helped him in Homecoming. Suit footage shows what really happened - case closed

That would have been insane footage of him flipping around, dodging drones in the final mysterio fight scene.

You have to remember there was actually a deleted scene of the courtroom case but it just made the movie too long for some audiences with the 1984 restrictions

Great video! My mother used to practice law professionally and still works her CLE every year to keep up to date. She'd love something like this, but she's hard of hearing and needs subtitles or captioning to understand a video if she can't read someone's lips; are there captions available aside from YouTube's automatically-generated ones, either by Film Theory or viewer-submitted? The automatic ones are *sufficient* in a pinch, but they have some trouble when Matt speaks excitedly about a topic (I have the same problem myself when using dictation software! 😅)

Just watched it last night and them showing his reflexes so more people may give his show a try for context. Love the film definitely gotta rewatch this film.

when you realize that the infinity gauntlet was made out of the same material as Thors Hamer so if Hela was able to break Thors Hamer if she had stayed alive Thanos would have been vary easy to beat

I think the most overlooked thing in this film has been Nick Fury. Maybe him and his skrull friend had something to do with the charges being dropped.

As your own clips show, it wasn't just the audio that was messed with in that video. The video shows Mysterio in his costume, but he was actually wearing a mo-cap suit. Thereby immediately throwing everything else into doubt as the footage was graphically processed.

Finding Mysterio's body in a mocap suit would also probably be a massive red flag that literally none of his story was valid and would instill mistrust that he was killed by Peter as well.

@Lynette Build a giant snowman mysterio can create illusions using his own tech before he assumed control of Edith and used the new stark drones for it. So it is possible that he reverted back to using his own tech to fake his death and frame Peter.

Matt Murdock is a really great lawyer in spite of everything that makes him a liability as a lawyer.

I get the charges being dropped but it should have started more intense riots. Even if something isn't true people riot so that would have been interesting. I would have liked to see them break into his house or something

this video blew my mind… like it’s so cool to think DOD was looking out for Peter bc of his involvement with tony, totally makes NWH that much better considering the quick dismissal of the charges

A few thoughts I had: 1) Even if you were to argue that Peter was breaking our vigilantism laws, which he may not have been, he pretty clearly wasn’t breaking the MCU’s vigilantism laws since they take that far less seriously and he is a recognised Avenger 2) If EDITH keeps a record of which user is logged in and give which orders that’s even more evidence to clear Peter 3) I don’t think that the DODC was acting as a part of some convoluted Stark cover up, especially because they do launch a major investigation into Stark Industries, it’s more likely in my opinion that with the rising number of superhero incidents and especially the signing of the Sokovia Accords there would need to be a government agency specifically for monitoring and regulating them and the DODC is the obvious choice for that because it’s already their area of expertise

@#ImSippinTeaInYoComments Firstly SHIELD doesn’t exist any more and SWORD is seemingly focused on extraterrestrial and existential threats, it would make sense to have a separate organisation to deal with ground level stuff and the DODC fits perfectly into that niche Secondly all we know about the Stark connection to the DODC is that he funded and possibly equipped them when they were founded but that was over ten years ago and a lot of thing can change in that time, especially when Stark Industries was at the centre of a lot of the things they were meant to be cleaning up And finally regardless of how you look at it the DODC clearly aren’t just a cleaning agency anymore, they have investigators, interrogation rooms, vans full of armed officers and most notably government legitimacy to do what they’re doing. Whether they’re acting as a Stark cover up or not they are clearly doing what they’re supposed to be doing and given that they have no evidence against Peter there doesn’t need to be a conspiracy to explain why he wasn’t prosecuted

I just want to add. That can prove that Beck used to work for Stark, his speciality was holografics and that the drones were used to fake supernatural beings. With that in mind its not hard to disprove the videos as evidence, even if the actual voicelines etc were recorded "live"

Watched this movie with my kid nephew. It was really good but I feel like I caught some things that he probably didn't, despite him being more of a Spiderman fan than I am (especially the new Spideys, my bae will always be Tobey Maguire). Idk if he's familiar with Daredevil but the lawyer showing up got a chuckle out of me.

With the Department of Damage Control handling the legal issues, they seem to hit two birds with one stone. Clearing Peter of the accusations and retrieve all the Stark tech from the London incident for their "investigation". Pretty smart move.

i want Matt as my lawyer. No arguments at all, Matt would make an awesome lawyer.

His is guilty of saving 7500.000.000 lives on earth, and countless throughout the universe. He is also the reason Tony Stark/Iron Man helped with/perfected time travel so the time heist could be done. Maybe that should count for something. I really hope that the ppl protesting Spider-Man wasn't ppl brought back from the Thanos snap. They literally owe him their life, as do the rest of the universe. The ones that protest are ppl who had it better after the snappening. Better jobs and pay, better homes, better and more food. More impact on the world/politics. Guessing they had a good life until it was all taken away from them.

Don't forget that damage control seized all... ALL... of Tony's remaining tech. The charges were a cover to get tech that couldn't be replicated. What if Riri's MCU origin is as a DoDC agent/intern?
