@Sweet T But how do you quantify if someone is "less willing to do a bad deed"? And I feel the gain only works if you are in the position or belief that this victim's life is considered something to gain. There are a limitless number of variables that could add to why the chooser feels lying is equal or to why this victim's human life is seemingly insignificant to them. As you referenced in your comment, if they were taught something irrational, it serves as being irrelevant if they feel they have good intentions. If we added in a factor of a chooser was raised in a mentally abusive household, where they were taught lying causes "God" to randomly kill someone as punishment. They would be in a position where they believe lying or being honest to the murderer would still cause someone to die. If we even take out the chooser's empirical aspect, and it turns out this chooser somehow is stuck in a scenario where every time he lies someone actually does die, the view of irrationality can be taken out entirely. But for us, we don't know the context, we just know they are in a position where they feel they have to make a choice between two moral conflicts that are both valued to them the same.
Vor year
Sweet T
@Russ well i was basically saying that if someone is less willing to do a bad deed, that counts somewhat as them recognizing that it's wrong and that they don't want to do it. And what i meant earlier, about the person choosing between lying or telling the murderer the truth, was that if they view both acts as equally wrong, then it would make sense that they would choose to lie, as they would have more to gain (a human life being saved on their part) though I do think adding in factors would and should play a part in that decision
Vor year
Russ
@Sweet T Right, for your beliefs you don't believe murder is considered as unethical as lying. For you, it doesn't make sense. But in this hypothetical, they are being weighed the same as the person who does choose. There is no lesser of two evils, it's more someone making a decision of subjective, equal moral standing. This hypothetical is commonly referred to as the murderer dilemma(More commonly known one being the trolly problem). Which is often used as a thought experiment for more complex examples. Such as adding on factors where the murderer is a serial killer, or the victim is someone, who the chooser knowingly(or even unknowingly), will kill more people than the murderer ever will if they're kept alive. Often the example of war is used. Such as one country finding their government to be the utmost moral, and will go into war to force it upon others. Feeling that the bloodshed serves a larger goal, and often do not show remorse for it. With this, the need for their involvement and how they proceed to do things are argued as unnecessary, while some argue it absolutely is necessary. So in your statement about it "counting towards the quality of their person". In what way do you view its effect? Also, can you expand on what it means to "how willing they were to do it"?
Vor year
Sweet T
@Russ well, ignoring the fact that lying being considered as unethical as murder would be illogical, and even if it was as unethical as murder, at least telling a lie would have been more beneficial to the person who we're discussing than allowing the murderer to do his thing. Regardless, this is a drastic example, and I believe that if someone were to do something bad to avoid doing something worse, or "choosing the lesser of two evils," that does count towards the quality of their person. The only other factor, however, would be how willing they were to do it, and what their intentions were in doing the less evil thing
Vor year
Russ
@Sweet T I'm curious on your thoughts on those who knowingly do ill intentions because it's misaligned with other ethical beliefs. Taking for example the murder paradox. Where a murderer is chasing after a friend and plans to kill them no matter what. Said friend tells me they are going to hide, and where. The murderer then approaches me asking me where my friend is. For my personal upbringing, I was taught to never lie no matter what. But, revealing the details will inevitably result in my friend's death. I choose to not lie to the murderer, as I believe lying is considered bad faith. I go on not regretting the decision because, to me, I feel lying in itself is as unethical as murder.

I honestly interpret this as Lois thinking that good people always get things in return/rewards for being good. However, in this case, she didn't, and then she did what a bad person would do. Being good is not about just doing good things, it's about doing good things WITHOUT expecting something in return. She's not a good person because she's only acting kind and sweet because she wants something back.

A good person doesn’t need to say that they’re good just as a badass doesn’t need to advertise how bad they are
Vor yearRuss
Vor yearSweet T
@Russ well i was basically saying that if someone is less willing to do a bad deed, that counts somewhat as them recognizing that it's wrong and that they don't want to do it. And what i meant earlier, about the person choosing between lying or telling the murderer the truth, was that if they view both acts as equally wrong, then it would make sense that they would choose to lie, as they would have more to gain (a human life being saved on their part) though I do think adding in factors would and should play a part in that decision
Vor yearRuss
Vor yearSweet T
@Russ well, ignoring the fact that lying being considered as unethical as murder would be illogical, and even if it was as unethical as murder, at least telling a lie would have been more beneficial to the person who we're discussing than allowing the murderer to do his thing. Regardless, this is a drastic example, and I believe that if someone were to do something bad to avoid doing something worse, or "choosing the lesser of two evils," that does count towards the quality of their person. The only other factor, however, would be how willing they were to do it, and what their intentions were in doing the less evil thing
Vor yearRuss
