Being a former Air Force Fighter Aviator, I really enjoyed this renovation. You don’t see many metal fighter models these days. I’m not sure if those were bombs, more like fuel drop tanks. The F-4 was known to use a lot of fuel. Great restoration, thanks for sharing.

Being a mid thirties truck driver who's only ever been on a plane once in my life and is terrified of flying and heights, I really enjoyed this restoration.

I believe they are drop tanks, but I could be wrong because I am no expert.

The fact that all the pieces are there despite being so old and cruddy make me think it was found while digging in the backyard. Like an old toy a kid buried and forgot about. Or time capsule.

It was likely a brand new model, which included the canopy.... made the silicon mold to cast a "new" one and snapped the wing off. Go try snap something like that. Zinc alloy also doesn't rust like this.

@extra808 100% this. Stuff doesn't rust like that in nature. That was given some sort of bath.

He probably bought the model and dirtied it up seeing how the debris came off so easily and he mysteriously found a seller for the missing canopy

I truly enjoyed this restoration. Sixty-five years ago as a combat infantryman in Vietnam there was nothing more we grunts liked than an "Alpha Sierra" (air strike) to help us out on the ground. But I recall us distinguishing who was supporting us, i.e, U.S. Airforce or U.S. Navy aircraft and pilots. I believe we thought the USAF flew the sleek tapered wing as F-104's, while we identified the the delta wing aircraft as USN bombers. In either case, both were welcomed!

@KC Hof wrong. 104s were there for a couple years. The 479th TFW provided CAP with a decent success rate

No F104 flew in Vietnam. USAF flew F100 Super Saber and F4s in the south. VNAF flew F5s, A1Es, and A37s in the south. Many different USAF fighter bombers flew in the north. F4s, F105s,A1Es (Sandies- rescue missions) I flew U10B (Special Air Warfare) in the south May 1969 thru December 1969.

65 years ago? Vietnam? No F-104s at that time (almost no americans actually)

I believe that those are not bombs on the F-4 but rather drop tanks. Drop tanks are used to give more fuel for longer flight time. Excellent job on the restoration. Your skills are incredible.

i was a crew chief on the RF-4C. That was an AWESOME restoration. I've never seen a metal model like that. To Answer another post, yes, those are 370 wing tanks. The Phantom (even with those tanks and no centerline) would only get about 1.5 hours flight time, unless he was busy chasin Mig's. I would REALLY like to find a model like that.

Fantastic vid I love your restorations. Just a small tip (I’m a jeweller) you don’t need to use Talc. It is only used to be able to loosen the item from the mould. It would not be needed in this casting. It can make the casting get porosity and end up slightly honey combed. Hope this helps future projects

This is one of my favorite planes of all time. I wish you could have all the other symbols on the plane. Where the flaps and air brakes are. They are incredible planes and those are refueling tanks. These planes could be refueled in the air. These where given out to representatives, manufacturer program managers, and select others. I have only seen 1 in person and it was insane. Needed a good clean, I tried to buy it several times but it was promised to a family member.

I would recommend using a pulse setting for welding a part like that. It offers excellent heat control and consistency throughout the weld which in turn controls distortion.

I've done a bit of sandblasting in my day, even about 10 entire cars inside and out, i find it really satisfying to watch the metal come back to life as all the corrosion gets blasted away. I enjoyed your process, i might have to try it.

There’s a guy local here in Ohio that will come to your place and do your car or whatever. He uses sand mixed with water. There’s less warpage.

I was an industrial sandblaster for 10 years, I loved it getting into the hood and suit then blasting for hours, climbing into tanks, boxes, shoots, classifiers out at production plants. My only complaint about it ever was how miserably hot it was.

It's edifying watching your channel can't wait for the next one let me soak up this one and the angel a little longer

That fighter jet has seen some action.! Well done some fine work you do there. A real craftsman. .. Props for tig welding that wing back on..that could have easily gone wrong (melt a hole in the wing) being such thin metal... Stunning end result and the pilots look alot happier after their baths.👊

That was a very nice job. Very skillful. It reminded me that as a child in the 1960's I had a model F4 Phantom. I think it was an Airfix model. It was a great looking aircraft then.

For looking so rusty and dirty... The plane itself was in almost perfect condition - you can see how great the surface looks under after the sandblast. And that wing break was too clean. In reality, that piece should've been long lostt. And those pilots came out quite easily. Video is very sus. 🤔

Also, it's covered in rust and it's made of aluminum....🤣

I enjoy watching these restorations this one was special my grandfather was in the air force during the Vietnam war and the F-4 phantom is what he flew I used to have a model when I was a kid so this was pretty awesome 😎👍
