Cinema Sins has made a Sin

The real sin is that the book has a sequel where Forrest finds out that Tom Hanks played him in a movie and there's no movie about it. But yeah, daring to sin this movie is basically a one way ticket to send you to the fifth ring of hell for all eternity.

Lt. Dan WANTED to stand, somebody absolutely offered him a seat but he declined. It's significant thematically, he sat for years in a wheelchair bitter and in turmoil over his circumstances, and standing tall on his own legs is a symbol of his character development. Plus Forrest liked seeing him walking about again

Its a great movie. But there are a few flaws. Take 7:28 - 7:34 where President Johnson says he's got 4 men with him, but Jeremy says that there's 5 counting Gump. Since it's been informed to us numerous times since the movie came out that the movie used real footage both visual and audio of both President Johnson and Kennedy speaking, Johnson was correct by saying that there were only 4 men, because Forrest was edited in. This was the fault of the editing department where they should've still used Johnson's real talking like they did, except they should've edited "5" over his saying "4". They earlier edited "I believe he has to pee" over Kennedy's otherwise real speaking, so they should've been able to edit "5" over "4" over Johnson's

This movie is fascinating bc there's such a divide in reception. You either love it or hate it for the same reasons but have the opposite reactions. Like I basically disagree with every sin having the opposing opinion of the scene or story. I think one of the biggest causes is that Jenny is one of the most misunderstood characters in popular film history. Seems like a lot of people just don't have enough knowledge or experience with sexual abuse victims to understand how accurate and tragic her character is.

This movie is great. There are only a couple little nit-picks if I want to look for them like Jeremy has, one being at 3:51 - Forrest saying "The one good thing about meeting the president was the food", as we see him completely ignore all the food and having nothing except 15 dr peppers, lol

There was a period in the mid 90s where movies and TV were doing a lot of the "editing modern actors into old footage" thing because digital video technology and remastering had just reached the point where it could look believable. A good example is the episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine where the crew time travels back to an episode of the original Star Trek series and interacts with characters like Kirk and Spock. Honestly I think a good chunk of the early inspiration for Forrest Gump was the idea of telling someone's life story and showing them in historical footage as an unlikely background character.

I respectfully disagree with what you said about the quotes. Every one of them is deep and meaningful. "Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get" simolizes how Forrest never knew what plans life had for him, but he always tried to make the most of whatever situation he was given. A truly important life lesson for all of us. Forrest Gump has many meaningful lines, but most importantly it has a different message for ever person, that's one of the reasons I love this movie so much ( :

This movie represents how much difficulty Forrest went through in his life while still looking at everything through rose colored glasses, he was successful and had a good life but the people around him that he loved did not have the same fate, especially jenny who Forrest looked up to and loved even when she wasn't worth it because he couldn't see her red flags, she was a friend, but she also left Forrest multiple times because she couldn't commit, and when she finally did she died.

Now that you guys pointed out some of the flaws in this movie, I'm starting to think it's at least somewhat overrated. Yeah, it's emotional and a decent movie but I wouldn't call it a masterpiece. I think it's mostly nostalgia that gets to people as it's seen as a classic among films. You're right, there's no real plot, things just happen and coincidences make up a lot of the movie as well as celebrities just popping up to make the movie more interesting now and again. The only consistent thing is Jenny and she's a well written character that represents what trauma does to a person, which led her to being a bad person in life. You're not supposed to like her nor give her excuses for all her actions because she's an adult that chose to make those decisions and didn't chose to be happy with forest until she was alone and desperate. Overall though, I'd give this movie a 7/10.

Clearly Jenny was a very troubled girl, young woman, and woman. From a very young, vulnerable age, she was sexually abused by her father, which ultimately led to her moving in with her grandmother, but didn't find the love that a child requires there, but rather with her good friend Forrest. They grew up together like peas and carrots, and from the short glimpse we see of them in high school, they are each other's only friends. Consider high school from a social perspective, and you can see that even with the best intentions, pretty girls are not best and only friends with the mentally disabled, but Jenny was never ever to branch off and have other friends. She stayed by Forrest, and Forrest stayed by her. When she got to college, she sought out someone to fill the emotional hole that she had inside of her, and we see this when she's in the car with the guy that Forrest beat the snot out of. It's at this point that I think Jenny begins going down the wrong track. Since Forrest ruined her chances of getting lucky that night, she chose to take advantage of him. It didn't matter to her that this was her best friend of 10+ years! she needed physical confirmation that she worth a damn, because her entire life she had felt worthless. This was the beginning of a seemingly endless wild goose chase for confirmation of self worth. As children, her answer to life was simple: run. This personality trait stuck with her throughout her life. Run away from dad. Run away from bullies. Run away from danger in Vietnam. Running was Jenny's best defense mechanism to pain or challenges. When she was faced with the shame of having her best friend see her naked and abused in a nightclub, instead of facing it, she told Forrest to leave her alone and never talk to her again. At this point Forrest tells Jenny that he's going to Vietnam, and she tells him that no matter what, don't be a hero, just run, and then gets into a cab and runs away from yet another disaster in her tragic life. The next time we as an audience see Jenny she seems happy for the first time in her life. She's a hippie, playing guitar, but the subtext is so in your face that it's almost too easy to gloss over. A stranger approaches her and invites her to San Francisco, and she goes with him. What I mean is that Jenny could never stay anywhere too long. This theme is reinforced throughout the rest of the film, at first through Forrest's letters to her being returned to sender. When Forrest returns home from Vietnam his is awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, and while in DC he is giving a speech on the Mall when, as can only happen in movies, he reconnects with Jenny as thousands of people cheer them on. And they're happy together. But then the spark goes out when we see why Jenny is there. In her search for purpose and confirmation of worth, she's hooked up with a complete disaster, a man with anger issues who's abusive. Sound familiar? Jenny is trying to recreate her father and get it right this time. In her mind, what happened to her as a child was her fault, and if she can find a person who embodies who her father was, and come up with different results, she can fix her past. Forrest then does what Forrest does best and beats the snot out of another bad influence on his best friend. Unfortunately, Jenny chooses to go with the abusive boyfriend instead of Forrest, and they wave goodbye to each other as her bus pulls away from DC. At this point, what happens next with Jenny becomes unclear, but it eventually leads to nightclubs, drugs, other men, and contemplating suicide. When she's used up all of those people and devices, she turns to the one constant in her life: Forrest. She returns home to Greenbow, Alabama and stays with Forrest, and they "was like peas and carrots again." On a walk, they come across her childhood home, and Jenny breaks down with the memories of her broken childhood, and her decisions that she's made in her life ever since. She finds comfort in the life that Forrest can give her, but that terrifies her more than anything. When Forrest offers her an opportunity to leave it all behind and become his wife, she rejects him, and tells him that she wouldn't make a good wife. What happens next is where my cynicism comes into play. Clearly the two have sex that night, and those who I discussed this with last night say it was consensual. I think it was rape. At this point in his life Forrest is an adult and certainly knows about the birds and the bees, but I think he was still a virgin. Jenny comes into his room in the middle of the night and takes that from him. Even though this was probably enjoyable for Forrest, he didn't have much of a say in the matter. Either way, this becomes too much for Jenny and she leaves the very next day. Distraught with losing Jenny yet again, Forrest begins running. He equates running to Jenny, because that's what Jenny has always told him to do. If he can't have Jenny, he might as well run. During his run, years pass, and we see Jenny working in a diner. She's dressed professionally for the environment, she cut her hair, she looks like she finally got it together. And that is the very last time we, as an audience, see Jenny during Forrest's story on the bench. The next time she's seen is in the movie's present. Before I get to that, I just want to dissect Forrest's story about Jenny before getting into his future with her. She was abused as a child. She was always searching for self confirmation of worth. She made poor decision after poor decision. She chased after the wrong kind of men. She constantly took advantage of her dearest friend for personal selfish gain, even it was subconsciously. She played with his emotions in order to feed her own. It's clear that what happened to her as a child made her into who she became as a woman, but never once throughout the story does Jenny take personal responsibility for any of her poor decisions. But she doesn't blame them on her father, either. There is simply a complete and total lack of accountability. She went through life searching for confirmation, purpose, and answers. She truly loved Forrest, but wouldn't do anything and everything she could for him, like he would for her. The reason Forrest was at the bus stop was so he could visit Jenny. When he arrives at her apartment, it appears as if she finally got it right. She looks clean, she's got a job, and the reason behind all of this is because she has a son, Forrest Jr. Going back to my first point of this, it seems like a given that Forrest Jr. is Forrest Gump's son, but the whole reason I wrote all of this is to ask the question: REALLY? We find out that Jenny is sick. It is my assumption, and everyone I've spoken to about the matter, that it's AIDS. With no cure and a ticking time bomb on her life, Jenny had to put someone else first for the first time in her life. She had to think of the well being of her son. Faced with a very short timeline and a huge disaster, I believe that Jenny turned to the one constant in her life, who just so happened to be a wealthy, somewhat balanced landowner. She knew that Forrest would do anything for her, but she was afraid of him rejecting her and her child, because she had rejected him time and time again. So she lied. Jenny's entire goal in life had been self confirmation, worth, and purpose. She found all three of those with the birth of her baby boy. At this point her purpose was to protect him, and nothing else. When she found out she was terminal, her purpose didn't change, and neither did her character. Jenny would do whatever it took to protect the most important person in her life, so she turned to the only constant in her life to protect him. By telling Forrest that the boy was his, she knew that his ceaseless sense of responsibility and accountability would force him to take care of Forrest Jr., long after she died. She once again took advantage of the simple man, because of his greatness. Did she love Forrest? Absolutely. Did she ever mean any harm or malice towards him? Absolutely not. But with her back against the wall and a clock telling her that she needs to act now, she lied to Forrest about fatherhood in order to protect and ensure that her son has a good future.

@Kemp Isabel it’s not about not liking Forrest in a romantic way it’s about her choosing to use him to take care of her and her kid kid cause she was dying. It’s about the fact that she could have picked him the entire time it’s not fair to shoehorn him into the last part of her life because she pulled a bad card. Also trauma isn’t an excuse to treat people like shit and then use them when it’s convenient to you.

Before I say anything, I know it's been a whole year since this was published, it just sucks that we haven't gotten a video from CinemaWins on this. This movie really stuck out to me. I like a lot of things about this movie, but i'll just throw a few out: I think when Forest was talking about his first pair of shoes, the only reason the braces came to mind was because those were the only ones he remembered. Maybe because of his mental issues, or maybe because this was the first major event in his life that started who he is. When you-CinemaSins -were talking about how his mother's "life advice" wasn't all that meaningful, and kind of simple, that is what makes it beautiful to me. It's simple because she had to speak in a way that little Forest-at the time of course-could understand it. And another thing I had trouble with was that you said something about Forest not showing any real emotion before Jenny's death, I think that this is incorrect, Forest doesn't show emotion that much because he doesn't really much of any people to have emotion for. Jenny was the second major person to have a major emotional effect on Forest-besides his mother-and thats why he loves her so much, even if she is just a shitty person. I love this movie so much and just want for people to give it the respect it deserves.

For this specific video, I don’t find any issues with the film because Forrest Gump is baked into my childhood and so it will always be a treasure to watch and enjoy. Does some random persons comedic take on the films quirks and whatnot really threaten that? There's so many rebuttals I have for this - but one that irritates me is @13:58 - she asked if he was scared in Vietnam, and his response was not really because of the calming skies he saw at night - he then referenced(literally says " it was just like...") a similar feeling of observation when he was running in the mountains, or lakes, plains, etc... had a similar feeling of serenity. Makes perfect fucking sense.

If you're a young innocent child being sexually assaulted by your Father who you were supposed to trust, that would pretty much mess up your heart and mind. My only wish for this movie is that Forrest and Jenny would have lived happily ever after. After all, they truly loved each other, but the deep emotional pain from her past, haunted her enough to keep running away from the only man who unconditionally loved her the entire time.

FORREST GUMP FAN THEORY - Forrest Gump imagined (or made up) all of the past experiences he talks about on the bench. Not only does no one on the bench recognize him, but no one in the cut scenes recognize him for his prior experiences either. He most likely saw things on tv and changed those memories to include himself somehow. As for Jenny's newspaper clippings, she could have easily had them printed somewhere to show that maybe she really does love Forrest and goes along with how he views and interprets the world.

This movie is meant to be the kind of movie to learn something good out of sincere silly life stories or just don't make sense stories. A lot of things will not make sense here which including the running of miles and miles and running very fast and drinking bottles of pop at a time. But that is the ideal of this movie, watch our silliness and you will learn a good life lesson. As for me the life lesson or lessons I learn is to keep cool and keep hoping for the best for someone you love. Jenny is kind of like the prodigal son, or if you may, the prodigal daughter, who ran off away from her true love and live her own lives and squander all the good things she could have from Forrest, But finally she come home and Forrest gladly accepted her just like the father who welcome his prodigal son. Won't us like to have a friend like that? I like to share with you who is that friend in my life, that is Jesus in the Bible.... I listen to the Theme song of FG for many hours and still inspired how the tune has mystically struck my heart strings.

Every time I would watch this movie it pissed me off that Jenny always was doing drugs or with the wrong people, because she grew up in an abusive home. Forrest was the only person that truly cared for her, even if he was ‘slow’. He accomplished so much in his life and then at the end, he’s left with a kid. She met with him only to crash at his place or have sex with, until a ‘friend’ came and got her, just to do more drugs and travel. Then when about five years pass, she drops the “ this is your son btw” 🤔

Vor 3 years
Derth

My explanation for this is that Jenny always loved Forrest. The issue was never that she thought herself too good for him. She thought she was damaged goods in some way because of the abuse and either thought he was too good for her, or that she didn't want to taint him in any way. The whole point of "Run, Forrest, Run" is that that is Jenny's way of dealing with everything (the first instance we see being her running into the field to escape her Dad). So, while he was literally running, she was trying to run away from her past, only to get into further tragedy. A lot of people think Jenny gets in touch with Forrest because she's sick and needs him to look after Forrest Jr. It's not that. After she has Forrest Jr. and gets her life back together, she doesn't need to run anymore. And she finally realises her and Forrest belong together. Tragically, it's just too late. When the film came out, a lot of people criticised it for celebrating a patriot and punishing the rebel. That, in my opinion, is completely wrong. Forrest is basically the feather, floating about on the breeze, going wherever the people in his life tell him to go, not out of idealism, but rather out of a lack of self-initiative (runs cause Jenny tells him to, joins the football team cos they ask him, ditto the army, ditto ping-pong, starts shrimping cos Bubba suggested it). The only thing he actually ever wants for himself is Jenny, who, on the other hand, is symbolised by her house and the tree, wanting to move away, but stuck to the ground. Forrest finally undoes this, in a manner of speaking, by razing the house to the ground. And, when he leaves her grave, the birds flying away symbolise Jenny's wish of becoming a bird coming true. For me, the final scene, when Forrest tells his son he'll be right there, and the feather flies away, shows that Forrest's future is now unclear. He could go anywhere. But, for now, he'll probably stay sat where he is until his son, the only real joy and purpose he has left, comes back. It's a hugely funny film, but for me, it's tragic.
