Farmers are one of the best examples of "You can't judge a book by its cover." They have to be able to know Biology, Chemistry, Math, Meteorology, and also the Stock Market. When you look behind the past the accent, they are just as smart as anyone.

Young man, you are doing God’s work. By explaining basic principles and showing their applications, with excitement and enthusiasm, you catch the interest and imagination of your viewers, and make them them think, “I could do that!” You’re the first step in “standing on the shoulders of giants.” Thank you for your work.

I grandfather was a farmer and he told me a story of how his silo exploded once. No gasoline, no explosives just grain. He said that it was a particle explosion, all that dust and grain particulates when in a silo when they condensed to much without proper ventilation and it gets too hot in there, BOOM huge explosion and a lot of money down the drain including the silo. That is why there is no many ventilation ducts on these silos and grain bins.

Great information about bins. Some call it silos, or storage heaps. I used to think that grains were kept completely dry inside bins. To not loose weight, it is surprising to see that humidity is not brought to the minimum level. Thanks for the good info. How are pests and rodents taken care for annual storage of grains?

Should have included a study page to pause on for this particular bin of how many jacks, each jack's rating, how many bolts each jack lifts by, the size & grade of the bolts, the torque setting of tightening device (was it electric, pneumatic or hydraulic, was the torque setting done by a clutch or a pressure regulator), the weight of one ring (data on metal gauge vs diameter also), the assembled roof, the number rings and for the last lift how much of the power unit's rated capacity was used. How many horsepower/CFM is that fan? Was there more than one fan? If only one fan then no air circulation until the one fan works again. Looked like a fairly large motor. Is it 480V 3ph or just 240 single phase? How about some details on the auger drive.

I know a guy around where I grew up that used to check out old grain bins for defects. Seals, bolts, and interior ring wear. One time he was inside of one of my neighbors bins, he opened the top lid, saw it was full, and went inside to take a look. The bin he was in was an old SuKup, probably 50’ tall by 28’ wide. He walked on top of the grain, checking for rust spots along the seams. He didn’t see anything, and went into my neighbors house to tell him that the bin was in great shape. My neighbor, looked at him with astonishment and told him that the bin he had walked in, 45’+ feet in the air on the inside, hadn’t been used in almost 12 years. The guy had walked on a 3” thick layer of crusted beans, with nothing underneath him. That bin hadn’t been filled in years, but the crust on top is what the guy had walked on, not knowing about the massive void underneath him. Grain bins are a scary implement.
