@Crispus Mahea oh wow. Imagine how that would settle with other sprinters and the fans. Winning the points jersey but hadn't WON a single sprint. That would not be a position I'd want to be in as a sprinter. It's just not right. Yes, winning the jersey is great BUT there would be so much talk and controversy over it if he did not win a single sprint. You talk about "going down in history", well I don't think it's that cut and dry. It would be debated and discussed until the next time he's at a world tour and it would still be being debated at THAT world tour. It would be a shadow over him. It wouldn't be a clear and respected decision even tho he won the points classification. He's be talked about for a LONG time if that happened. And a sprinter sprints to win. Bini would NOT be proud of the jersey if he didn't even win ONE stage!! It would bother him also!!

Vor Monat
Crispus Mahea
Crispus Mahea

@Ken Kaniff In a grand tour it is all about the jersey. I wish BG would have clinched position 2 or 3 in every sprint so far....he'd be wearing the maglia ciclamino and there is nothing anyone could say to him because at the end, that is what goes down in history. Not the one win here and there.

Girmay to me seems like a sprinter that doesn't need teammates, he was in a perfect spot to sprint despite barely being helped. And tbh you can see with some of the AG2R riders that had a pretty decent train going that fizzled out because one of their lead out men simply wasn't fast enough dpesite trying his hardest that it can be a drawback

Vor Monat

@Brendan Luongo You're right for the lead out.But who's the one strong enough to do that in Intermarché ? Not Pozzovivo,Taaramae or Hindt.Moutain is for them No Barnabaak. Not explosive enough, but a good rider The three others I don't know them .So I look their profile. One of them(Vliegen) worked for Girmay in Paris Nice ,but for all the stages, not only sprints. So maybe Belgium riders .But they're not sprinters But to do a lead out you need to be a good sprinter ,so I don't know who really suggest to help Girmay And I think the "real" Girmay is the one of the first stage, who battled against MVP.Girmay is only 22,he's a World class rider, with a great future, but he's not a pure sprinter

As a casual spectator, what is, as was mentioned in the video the risk of catching the breakaway too early? What does it matter whether he's chased down 30 or 60 km before the finish?

Vor Monat
Ken Kaniff
Ken Kaniff

Catching a breakaway too early can cause ANOTHER breakaway which may be MORE successful because the new breakaway doesn't have to hold off the peloton as long

Vor Monat
darrelduke
darrelduke

and also a standoff between gc teams to see who will take up (or work on the front) the chase.

Vor Monat
Rafael
Rafael

I'd also add something to what has been said. When there's a breakway, it means that anyone that wants to escape the peloton still has the breakaway riders to beat, which may not be easy as they have the opportunity to sit on the wheel of the fresher riders and then beat them on the line. On the other hand, if they catch the breakawy too soon (60 or so km to go), it means that there's a stage up for grabs for anyone who escapes the peloton. Generally, the pace set by the peloton is different if there's 60 or 30km, meaning teams won't chase as hard at 60km to go , as they'd have nothing left in the last 10-15km.

Vor Monat
BernardHChrist
BernardHChrist

Basically they kind of want a mouse to catch. If the peloton’s on the front on a flat stage, everyone gets twitchy about who’s doing the work etc, it’s almost like there’s too much time to think. Having a breakaway, even solo, gives you a short term goal - so best take your time reeling him in on a rather deathly stage like today. Hope that helps!

@Samson Mehari I congratulate him and his countrymen for the win today. He was the better rider today. He did everything right. I never said he was not any good. I even said I think he will win a stage or 2 at the Giro. You Bini fans really need to relax and calm down a bit. The lad won and he deserves respect for his win but the fans need to stop being so adversarial about him. He won today. He had a great day and it doesn't surprise me cuz I truly felt he would win something at the Giro. It's hard listening to the fans talk complete craziness tho, he is NOT a PURE SPRINTER so there's absolutely NO WAY he is the "best sprinter". Today was a unique stage. It wasn't for PURE SPRINTERS. I only spoke the truth and you Bini fans thought I said he sucks. I said nothing like that! I said he needs experience, I never said he was no good, I even said I think he will win a stage or 2 and I said he is NOT a PURE SPRINTER but yet here you are trying to tell me something I never denied. I know the lad is good but he still has a lot to learn. He's only going to grow stronger and better as he learns and I wish him success. AGAIN I congratulate him and his countrymen on the win today but stop calling him a PURE sprinter because he is NOT. He's more like a Michael Matthews type of punch sprinter. Some of the Bini fans don't have a clue about cycling or sprinting. They are just going on and on like this guy is the best thing ever and he simply IS NOT. He's not even tried and tested yet. The guy may never be any good but he may end up being great but right now he is far from this NEVER BEFORE SEEN sprinting talent. I'm just getting tired of it. It's getting to me. I have my favourite riders but I don't lie to myself. I'm practical and call it like it is. These Bini fans (MOST of them) are just uneducated on the discipline of sprinting. They are lying to themselves which is a disservice to the rider and the team and themselves. I'm just really getting tired of hearing such unfounded nonsense about this Bini lad. I hope he does great. I have nothing against him. It's what his fans are saying that is getting tiresome real fast. It's only been a week and I'm so sick of hearing total nonsense and just plain stupid comments. By all means, cheer your rider in but don't be blind or talk about things you know NOTHING about. Half these fans probably never watched a race till this week. It's clear from their comments. I don't wish bad on anyone. I hope the lad does well in the sport but these fans need to be realistic and practical and stop with the totally senseless comments Edit: I just reread my comment and it is a bit harsh but it's just a byproduct of the fans talking nonsense and it's getting old really quickly

@Ken Kaniff geesh you’re putting in quite an effort. You acknowledged the guy is young, needs to gain experience and that his success is being hampered by the limitations of his team. Are fans not allowed to express their happiness in what he is able to accomplish? You clearly know that winning is a process, and the guys on the podium are well advanced in that process.

His reason was to take the wheel of that leadout man. That happens a lot. In this case, he chose the wrong time to do it, and got on the wrong side of the wheel and ended up trapping himself (along with ruining any chance the other sprinter had)

@H Bosman ♪ well no you don't need a guy to get you to the 50m mark. The sprinter has already dropped his leadout by 200m and is in FULL SPRINT BY THE 50m mark. Getting you to within 200 is adequate but it takes a TEAM of leadout men to be able to get the 1 or 2 men into a position to actually launch the sprint. The TEAM gets the sprinter into position to launch. It's not easy to do with 1 leadout man. These bunch sprints are brutal. Jockeying for position is tough so that's why a team is needed unless you are like Peter Sagan and can freelance your way to a launching position which isn't easy to do and he's one of the few that could do it consistently

@andrew7taylor Sure - they have made incredible improvements this year doing well in all the big races. My point is just that if they target the sprints in the Giro this year (which it clearly is), then they should have added a lead-out guy like Van Poppel. If it was for GC it is different, but it seems it is not.

Using the word "epic" to describe anything about today's stage is a real stretch. You might say Cav experienced an "epic fail" - dropped off with 200 to go after not breaking a sweat for 2 days in a row, and getting soundly beaten (can't claim he was tired or out of position).

Not the kind of race for him. He is a classics type rider so needs to ride hard for long distances or steep short climbs to gas other riders before he launches his fast finish. This stage had the peloton averaging 3w/kg until the last few km's, something that is typical in stage race flat sprints. That allows the true sprinters to save all their energy for their 30 second bursts, to which he cannot compete with on fresh legs basis.
