News article from Dec 18, 2020. Incident was Dec 15. BERN TOWNSHIP, PA — An intoxicated Lansdale man was arrested this week after a causing a series of incidents at Reading Regional Airport which led to landings being temporarily diverted, police said. The situation began at around 2:20 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 15. Police were told that a man was rolling on the grass and jumping in front of vehicles in Bern Township, on Route 183 near the airport. The man, Lansdale's Norman J. Lee, 38, fled when police arrived, climbing over a 10-foot high barbed wire fence near Millennium Aviation, authorities said. He then climbed into an idling and unlocked snow plow that was being readied for the coming snowstorm, and sped away into a restricted section of the airport grounds, according to police. Police immediately notified air control, who diverted landings. One inbound aircraft had to make a "last minute maneuver" to avoid landing while the chase for Lee was ongoing, officials said. The truck Lee was driving became stuck in the grass as the plow was lowered, and Lee then fled on foot toward a fence at the southern end of the airport, police said. That's where officers caught up with him, describing him as "violent" and "obviously under the influence of narcotics." Lee faces counts of theft of a motor vehicle, defiant trespass, criminal mischief, and resisting arrest. After spitting in the face of a deputy while receiving medical treatment, police also charged Lee with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. Bail was set at $100,000, and Lee was booked at Berks County Jail. A preliminary hearing is forthcoming.

When I was growing up, Reading (Carl A. Spaatz Field) had the largest airshow outside Paris. Every year we had either the Blue Angels or the Thunderbirds perform (back when both were flying F4's), plus a slew of aerobatic pilots. Bob Hoover use to fly his routine in his P51, then climb out and fly the same routine in his Aero Commander (Shrike?) I was 50' off the flight line the day Dick Schram (the Flying Professor) augured in. He had a great routine, and always borrowed a local Cub for his show. As I understand it, he pulled back on the backside of his loop, and the stick came clean out of the floor. The saddest thing was that his son (announcer for the Blue Angels) was announcing for dad that day. I keep hoping to make it back some year for the "new" Reading Airshow, which is a WWII reenactment, with warbirds, armor, Allied and Axis encampments, etc.

The day they started bombing Iraq during Desert Storm I was working in the tower at KISP. That night, a Vietnam Vet who had celebrated too much managed to get into the National Guard motor pool on the airport. He started a deuce & a half that had the wheel chained so it could only make right turns and banged his way out onto the aerodrome. When the tower opened the next morning, they found him passed out in the truck which had run into the radar shack mid-field.

It’s when a pilot is practicing approaches, landings and take-offs. They come in like they are going to land, touch down, then take off, as for a go-around. The B-52’s used to do that all the time at AFB’s when I was growing up — lots of noise, but I loved every minute of it❣️.

@A NNYER I bet. When I was IAD based, the snow removal plows were epic. They even had these devices to melt the plowed snow. They had it dialed in. Its a TRACAB. That controller is also certified on radar so they are allowed to vector aircraft and issue instructions as if they are working a radar position. The controller that was actually working the radar position was likely acting as Controller in Charge (like a temporary supervisor) and was probably on the phone with Airport Ops and authorities.

@Charlie Baker Oh, I think I see what you mean, like why tower held onto custody, not why he was giving vectors at all. This doesn't actually surprise me. It sounds like a way to protect rural folk. It's pretty much exactly like how Nevada and a couple other states, as well as most of UK and Australia treats public intoxication. Effectively the drunkenness or in this case the DUI on public property themselves are not a problem and if there is a problem, there are other better fitting charges to be handed down.

@Ken Hurley In order to understand why I would need: 1. To know where you are 2. To know whether the driver had connections 3. Any other extenuating circumstances Because normally DUIs are treated seriously: impounded car, large fine, probably suspended license, possible arrest depending on area and almost definitely a need to appear in court. The biggest factor is where the offense occurs.

@Dane Roschen Really? My friend was hit by a drunk driver not long ago. Oh it was his 5th (no pun intended) DUI! No insurance, no drivers license, and probably no jail time!

This would be funny- except that unknown factors are funny neither to controllers nor pilots.

When in doubt, order a runway inspection. I'm not sure how great of an inspection a vehicle driving at a good speed in the dark (even with headlights) can actually do, but it doesn't take long, doesn't hurt, would probably catch any big/significant FOD (such as a bumper) and is a good CYA move.

Given current circumstances in the US, no wonder they were so cautious and alarmed. They did a great job handling this situation

@Robert Hochwarth Not that this is actually related, but we've been having widespread political violence for most of a year now. So "months ago" wouldn't really mean anything.

This kind of response isn't the result of the recent incidents in the US it's the result of attacks and threats of attacks by terror groups against the US and Europe. The US airports and homeland security are particularly paranoid since 9/11 and who can blame them.
