Does My Electric Hummer have a KEY? - Time for some LED upgrades!

Today we finish off the brains of the 12 volt system. HUGE thanks to Oshcut again for laser cutting my dash panel: www.OshCut.com (not sponsored, they are just awesome.) In this video we start installing the important 12v components, like the headlights, blinkers, tail lights, along with the horn and the key to start the ignition. (And by ignition, I mean... relay that controls a fuse panel. )

Hopefully you fix the issue with the door locks. I took a really nasty fall the first night I was in Iraq because I leaned on the door. I knew better than to put my hands down, but it could have been bad.

Dont use those T-Tap connectors. You will end up with wiring problems from loose connectors like crazy. It might work at first but over time you will have to chase down issues and you will wish you never used them.

Someone might already have told you. But I will just comment on the power drawn by the new lights. When you lower the power (with LEDs) you also introduce more resistance faults. Faults coming from bad connections over time. On a normal system with halogens, such faults will "selfheal" because the more power is keeping the connection and water out of it. Hope I makes sense.

not trying to come off as that guy, but just wanted to touch up on your fuse rating for your horn, being as you measured an operating current (A) of 4A, from my understanding safest fuse ratings should correspond to roughly 1.25 - 1.5 times the operating current, respective to your wire gauges as well or closest rating to that calculated value. anyone feel free to inform me cause its always good to have more rule of thumb theories.

Guys, DON'T EVER use T-Taps... That's the hack way to do it. You cut shielding off the ware you want to tap into and wrap and solder, then seal. OR, You cut, parallel splice with a parallel crimp, and seal.

Basic electronics says that if you try running a 24 volt light with a 12 volt battery, the lights will require half the current, and will also be less than half as bright, if at all, Which you can use half the size wire. Current(I)=Voltage(E)/Resistance(R) Power (Watts) = I*E [ 24V/8 ohms (Light bulb for example) = 3 amps 3A*24V=72 watts (BRIGHT) ] { 12v/8 ohms (Light bulb for example)= 1.5 amps. 1.5A*12V=18 watts (Not so bright...) ] So no.. You don't need a bigger wire to run a 24V load with a 12V power supply. In fact, it is the exact opposite.

Vor 26 Tage
Rod MONK

One thing you need to understand is that if you increase voltage and keep wats the same Amps go down. Also putting more on the same wire is only a problem if you overload it. Unless you run in series. Amps=watts÷ volts

The 24v and 12v, Yeah if it was a normal car manufacturer I'm sure that they would have 28 gauge wiring going to the tail lamps on 24 volts that would not supply enough amperage for 12, What does a 95 Humvee I would be surprised if they used anything smaller than 10 gauge wiring everywhere

Hey Jerry, hope you see this or someone else has said it but when you have multiple wires coming into a connection with heat shrink over them you need to inject silicone or epoxy in between the wires at the ends of the heat shrink, moisture and air can still travel between the wires and corrode the connection really fast, especially if it’s under the car. And if you don’t, problems may come up and you’ll never see where they are because it’s all hidden.

A 12V to 24V DC converter would save all the trouble of rewiring. I probably would have stayed with 24V and used a 12V converter for components that have to be 12V. Many 24V components are available minimizing the need for 12V. Replacing 24V lights with 12V LEDs would draw less current than original. No need to rewire light circuits. I like the electric panel design and how clean it looks.

1. Now you know better than to just cut wires like a noob. 2. You should have just hooked up some backup lights and kept the blackouts. Pretty silly to get the H1 lights and lose that ability. 3. The plugs you cut off for the turn signals would have plugged up with the new lights. 4. Why are you replacing all the housings? Just change to a 12V bulb. 5. You do not need DRL's. You just wasted money and time with that nonsense. 6. Why is the world did you get rid of the light switch? You should try not getting rid of everything. And STOP CUTTING WIRES!!!!!! Dumbass! 7. Next time use cardboard for the initial template.

Just a random thought. Are you planning to make this thing capable of deep water wading? If so, it might be a good idea to reconsider how you are making those wire connections for wires running through the chassis. I've never used those connectors, and they look awesome, but when splicing wires together, it would seem to me there would be an opening between the two downstream wires that could cause a surge when submerged.

Loving this series! With those t-taps a word of caution would be to use dielectric grease on them and then maybe encase it in shrink tube or silicone caulk. Many moons ago I used to work part time installing truck accessories and we used these for wiring up truck caps or lighted visors or running boards. More than once after a couple years guys would come back with say truck cap lights not working and often it was these T's the aluminum would be all corroded.
