As a Nasus OTP back in the day, his ghosts used to be extra stacks. If you could play defensively you could get so many stacks. I kinda miss those days but I will never go back to that cesspit of toxicity. I spent from Season 3 to Season 7 playing but after that, I was done for good.

There is infuriating detail about old Yorick that everyone seems to forget- his ghouls has bugged model/bounding boxes and were nearly impossible to click on. I recall losing games because of that.

I remember talks of "The" runepage that when it took off all the top players and pros were like "Yeah, you just can't stop it"

Ivern was the first champ I picked up and I love how he plays as a new player i never realized how low of a pick he is to me he’s just really fun when you have good follow up on your ganks

Old yorick was such a blast to play... His passive was he gained power for every ghoul up, and all of his abilities except for his ult were ghouls. His E was a lifesteal ghoul, and all of his ghouls benefited from the items you picked, so you could build trinity and everything else lifesteal, and you were unkillable.

I very much feel the same way about Aatrox. As an old Aatrox main, I think if Riot had just held off on the rework they would've realized that they had actually fixed him with some of the minor changes. He was fun and unique but not broken and that is really all you can ask for from a champion.

36 minutes spent well. That was a really good documentary, I picked Yorick pre-rework run him Jungle and Manamune he was the most broken champion I played. Well I do still pick him up sometimes but it's just that when I get top lane since he doesn't feel strong anymore.

Yorick was my main go-to for top lane. I really loved his gameplay style (always loved pet builds in games, and he felt like a pet build champ).

I miss the old Yorick. It was so fun to solo drag at level 1 with your E back in the days.

Old Yorick was my favourite champion 🥺 I found out how strong he was after being stomped in a twisted tree line and got lvl 6 so fast in Rift 🥺

Yorick is my favorite. Unparalleled even nerfed into the ground.

I remember keeping track of all the champs I played back in the day and I used the free weekly rotation a lot to test champs in order to ascertain whether or not I want to buy them. Yorick did not appear in that rotation ONCE. That being said, I do not agree with the sentiment at all that so many champions NEEDED reworks. They did NOT "need" reworks and many champions that were reworked still did not find their way into regular competitive play. Some others were hopelessly OP and needed multiple nerfs. A rework is mostly done because the champion does not feel modern anymore and does not comply with the current state of the game - which at the moment is complicated, overloaded bullsh*t. Most reworked champions might be stronger but are a lot less fun to play. The Aatrox rework in particular stands out as one of the biggest fails ever seen. He was completely stripped of his identity and got a Riven 2.0 skillset that was OP for a long time. But every once in a while a champion that is simple and yet very fun to play is released, like Lillia right now. Finally a new champ with no ability descriptions that are as long as essays and no super overloaded kit. A nice thought at the end of the video, though.

I mean, i managed to beat Yorick sometimes as Riven back in the day, running red pot and ignite, made fast trades and tried to bait his W slow which costs alot of mana and then go all in as his E and W had quite long cd's. Also Riven was able to slice the ghouls and run away from his uöt quite easily. Good memories of beating people who wanted "free lp" by picking him up.

Watched this video almost a year later, but thanks for it. I love Yorick. Best champion. It was nice to see his history.

This reminds me of an old video about "winning by feeding", I need to watch that again! The idea was to feed kills to the enemy adc for some time, so the enemy team's strength was pretty much concentrated on one over-fed auto attacker. When this was achieved, you suddenly stopped playing like crap for a moment and killed the enemy adc in a team effort with a Mordekaiser R. Then copy the Mordekaiser ghost of the adc with your Yorick R and suddenly you have 2 copies of the strongest champ on the field, and you just run down the base in a single death push.

When I first played LOL, the new champion was KhaZix. But I purchased Anivia, then Ziggs, then Yorick. I use it more often in the middle lane while most of my team mates hate me because they believe a top lane champion should be used solely at the top lane. Then I'll get fed and win the lane alone.

I'm surprised that it was never mentioned how when he first came out, he had to be disabled because his ult was bugged and he was immortal and kept dying and coming back to life infinitely and could push the enemy core and couldn't be stopped.

I’ve recently begun watching your videos and really liking them so far, and although I don’t usually comment on these kinds of discussions, this kind of struck me a bit different. The topic of balancing champions based on elo dominance has always been a tough discussion. These days they have a somewhat decent solution of giving specific nerfs to mechanics that are easier or more difficult depending on which Elo they are targeting. Still, I do believe that if a champion is getting a 58% win rate in low elo and a 48% win rate in high elo, a change does need to occur. Understandably this can frustrate people, but letting a champion dominate games like that is unacceptable. As for the akali counter example, yea I agree with this. Still, I’m a bit more convinced that it was less of riot not wanting to nerf akali at the time and more not knowing how to nerf akali.

I think you have missread his point. He questioned why yorik is nerfed due to his low elo performance but akali not buffed to to her low elo performance. And I think he makes a very weak point because nerfing yorik does make him less/not viable for high elo, while buffing akali makes her broken in high elo, which fits quiet good into a philosophy that playing a champ doesn't need to be always viable but not playing a champ has to be always viable.

I remember the first time I encountered an ally Yorick ulti. I recalled right after I died in the teamfight thinking it's a reviving ability :3

Not gonna lie, I'm new to league and I discovered Yorick recently because I was searching for heroes that "Summon" my main being heimerdinger, At that time I was contemplating of making another summon or powerful hero being my secondary option when Heimer is picked. edit: He is my secondary main now, he's very entertaining agaisnt battles except early game since I couldn't last hit the minions lmao such a newb, they're still mine >:3.

When I just started playing league (6 months new) a few months before the yorick rework, I went up against one, I had never seen the champion before, I had no idea what he did, and I didn’t even know that that champion existed before that game, but I got absolutely dumpstered.

At least with old broken OP champs their kits were still relatively simple and counterable. With new champs they are OP and have an overloaded kit giving them a strong answer to nearly everything.

Now that im returning to this video, i can say that Yoric's Champion Spotlight is nothing compared to Seraphine's. Last Time i checked, it was at 130k dislikes to only 59k likes... Yikes...

Old Yorik wasn't impossible to lane against, he had a clear weakness, Jayce, Jax and Olaf. Those 3 champions were able to steamroll yorik. Back then I'd always pick Olaf into Yorik (before jayce came out) Olaf and jax could easily obliterate a yorik. And a yorik tahts behind cant do ANYTHING.

I rememeber I used to run into old Yorick somewhat periodically in season 5 and I continuously fed him as Renekton, Shyvana, and Mundo. Then I picked Maokai and with his passive found that the lane survivable. Farming was pretty hard. Only other champ that I found so awkward to lane against was Illaoi.

I used to play Yorick pre-rework, once they 'reworked' him, I tried to play him like I used to, got stomped, learned how to play this new version, and I absolutely hated it. I wouldn't even consider this a rework as much as it is a brand new champion who shares (...somewhat) his theme. It deeply saddens me that I'll never get to play that champ ever again.

i used to main yorick when he first got released and honestly he was great it took awhile to understand his skills and learn to control him but i got to it. honestly it was fun to play as him and even after the rework i still enjoyed playing him it wasnt the same and i had to learn his new skills but hey its how it goes when too many people complain cause they couldnt figure out how to beat him. hell a good singed used too own me when i played yorick

Jim Afanas uhhh I just wanted to point out that hyper carries still very well exist today in league. Examples are master yi, vlad, Jax like you mentioned, vayne before the nerfs, katarina and so forth. I agree with Mate too. Poppy is better now, she doesn’t need to do a lot of damage on her ult because she’s supposed to soak up damage and be a nuisance to the opposing team. The way she’s balanced now is also healthier for the game. You don’t want tanks one shoting or doing half the hp to enemy champions while also absorbing a lot of damage. That would be frustrating to play against and quite frankly terrible game design.

@Máté Schneller what are you talking about? Do you realise that back then, there was a class that no longer exists right? It was called hyper carries and it was consisted of mostly top laners which were champs that were high risk high reward. Best of them were jax, poppy, kayle :)

I love necromancers even more so when they themselfs are able to fight. I realy liked old yorick for that. But i hate this emphasis on split pushing that got even worse with the rework. Also the rework took alot of the necromancer feel with the stupid maiden. I realy hate most of new yorick except for his updated visual design.

When they buffed him this season (s11) he went from my favorite champ that no one played to 100% banned. He's still in a good spot right now though.

@Hans Christian Anderson You apparently forgot the most important shift in Riot's in-game currency policy: back in those good ol' days, we would win IP for every single game we played, even for a loss (from 50 to 150 IP accordingly to the game lenght ; first win of the day doubled the IP earned!). Today we're with a bad system that's making things impossible for new players, I agree. But not back then.

I'm surprised you didn't mention how difficult it was to kill his ghouls before the rework. Like you said, so much of his damage came from them, but I always felt the biggest problem was that they were so hard to counter. The hitbox on them were like 2 pixels and they move around so you could never take them down like you can with the new ghouls.

I miss so much my old teardrop trio: Yorick, Galio and Urgot. God, those were the good ol' days back in S6.

Yorick was my favorite champ until he got reworked, i still say the old one is better. Manamune, ice born, sunfire, spirit visage, mobility boots. Total brawler and enemy tilter lol. Trinity force for hybrid dmg because of kit if I was stomping lane. Runic bulwark was a go to when it existed.

I was one of the 0.1 % who liked the champ. Sometimes I miss him, the new Yorick can be very strong as well tho, and many are surprised by it.

I still think his points are nonesense. A champion doesn't have to be always viable but not playing a champion has to be viable. Imagin Garen being buffed until he is viable in pro play, or Kalista untill she is viable in iron. It is possible, but it ruins half the game.

I used to have Yorick as a third backup for top lane. If it came to that, I knew how to go 0 deaths and win every game lmao, but it felt so scummy to just spam abilities holding a tear and watch the enemy have to walk back every time I pressed a button. Downside was Yorick was so rare, teammates literally had no idea what he did and did not realize what was going on when you ulted them.

i loved playing old urgot. picked him up around half a year before rework and i won almost every lane cuz he was busted af. also liked to play yorick but did not play during his op days and my brother loved old poppy and karma

I think a good compromise would've been to make his damage be physical (scaling off of AD), or magical (scaling off of health) to transform him into an early game bruiser to late game tank/glass cannon. Plus, a passive that made it so he could only summon one ghoul every 10 seconds on spell cast, which would have forced players to choose between one of three playstyles, even more so if each ghoul had most of the utility (speed, slow, lifesteal), whereas the base abilities would be more barebones.

I played league along time ago like there was 10 characters when I started. There where alot of guys back in the day that had to be nerfed to obvilion. I remember mordakai, Shen a bunch of guys that could solo Penta kill quite easily by LVL 6-7. It is unfortunate that alot of older characters are losing relevance tho.

I'm Main Yorick since 2014 and he still likes me, his pentakill skin is similar to the old Yorick and it makes me feel good using it, deserve the nerfs he gets

I was really upset when I logged in to see that they had changed my man Yorick. When my mom was killed in a car crash, I fell into playing league to dissociate and because death and all that stuff was on the forefront of my mind I played yorick almost exclusively. It was a morbid comfort to just raise the dead after a tragedy like that and when I came back after a few years of down time I was super tilted they totally changed him to some bullshit he has now. I get he was bad, but the way things lined up it wound up being important to me.

You missed the most important reason why the Yorick champion spotlight has so many dislikes: It was before the EU server split into EUW and EUNE, and the EU server was unplayable most of the time. You either couldn't log in at all, or if you managed to get into a game, you would often randomly get placed on the NA server with 100+ ping. The forums and Riot's youtube videos at the time were getting spammed with hate because of it.

@westfallchicken you basically explained this whole video in a nutshell. A bunch of correlation, not as much causation. Champions being popular and unpopular isn't solely based around their winrate. Most of the popular champions are because pros play them or because of their recent rework and only a few because of how OP they are. Yorick just stopped getting played top... that's it. People didn't like his playstyle and those of us that did, did still did fine with him. I used to main him top when solo and when playing with friends, I was one of the first to play him as support. Because was a bully, and his ultimate was broken in bottom.

Its been a year now and Yorick has got the attention he deserved I'd say. I would be really interested in your opinion on his adjustments (and buffs) in the recent time.

I started playing Yorick in late 2019 and I really liked his kit, it was so unique and simple. So, for top, he's always been my main pick. Obviously, he's very weak until level 6 and is heavily reliant on ganks or counter ganks, but I love how he easily destroys towers and objectives. He's super useful in team fights, he can slow, trap and do heavy damage to anyone. I just wish he wasn't so team reliant. That's never good for solo queue.

You must not have played in 2016 and 2017. If yorick wasn't winning lane top it was because someone had a champion that could hold out against him and knew how to play defensively. In which case he would just hold lane till level 6 before beating down the enemy 2 or 3 times and then start running all over the map making more bodies. Because after all, the difference between a good necromancer and an enthusiastic necromancer is a good necromancer waits for bodies to naturally present themselves. Where as an enthusiastic necromancer is all about making new ones to play with. It was a good thing tha the had medium high difficulty for learning and playing him. Well also not a good thing. Pretty much you waited to see if someone was just learning and wasn't any good. If they weren't any good you could take him in a teamfight. If he was any good you just FF'd at 15 and banned Yorick on the next game. Lol. Then again those 2 seasons they didn't really have good free rotation champions. The only had the stupid over complicated to play (like Azir, Nasus, Chogath, Camile, Kalitta, Oriana, Akali,Akari, Riven, Irelia, Talia, old Heimerdinger, urgot, Fiora etc) or ones that weren't complicated but were just stupid and under powered champions like old Warwick, Garen, or old amumu. Back then free rotation pretty much. Sucked. But they hid most all of the champions that were pretty easy to pick up as far as how they worked, stalled well and could hold their own even in early game.

I remembered Yorick never EVER was in free champion rotation until he was reworked and I talked about that with my brother because we had no idea about what he did or how it worked

Yorick was one of my first champion I bought along with Annie, Warwick and Mordekaiser, Annie being the first. I used to dominate with Yorick as I spammed those colourful ghouls. The ghouls is what made me like Yorick as I had followers. I like the dead gravedigger concept also. Got so fricking sad when he got reworked into something that was so different. Same with WW, but he wasn't that much changed. Morde also got reworked. I got tired of all of my champs getting reworked and I had to relearn them that I just kind of slipped away from League.

Old Yorick was my hidden carry. I picked him up randomly one day in Ranked and used him to get to Plat easily, good times.

I loved playing Yorick and Poppy back in the day, the old poppy kit was better in my opinion. Her Q used to have an ap part to it that you could crit hard with and just beat champs into the ground with it

I remember the trio reveal of Skarner, Leona and Yorick. Those 3 were being worked on at the same time and when Yorick was released he was super underpowered until they buffed him and finally he became really fun.

You have to understand something about the older champion spotlights. The champions themselves were not necessarily bad. The videos were bad. They were long and drawn out boring let's play videos filled with terrible advice and misinformation. Tryndamere's spotlight, for instance, features Phreak playing him in the old jungle and goes on and on about how the champion is best utilized in jungle. And goes into too much detail about items and skill order. Most players know that Tryndamere works best in top lane, however as he is one of the game's most toxic split pushers with recent ghost buffs indirectly nerfing him as he generally runs flash ignite with nimbus cloak to outpace enemies. My point being is that the initial comment about champions receiving so much hate based on their spotlights is as misleading as the spotlights themselves. The videos were bad, not the champions.

honestly, he's the one champ that i've never had a loss playing with ever since i discovered him (his old version). Except for the super low mobility his old kit was too op for 1vs1, ganking, counter ganking and team fight.

I remember the take away from the Yorick rework, was that Nasus OGs had access to an alt pick if they got banned out of Dog King. If Nasus was Mario, then Yorick was Luigi. Served the same purpose, and more or less played the same. Not convinced it was a bad thing, either. Old Yorick almost as much a disaster as old walking toast Sion.

I remember yorrick. I bought him when he first came out lol. Wasn't good. I bought a load of crap in those days at first release. Skarner, karma, trundle. I stuck with karma and made a good go of it though.

30:20 exacly that! That was the nail in coffin for yorick and me. It just made zero sense WHY they would nerf him. Riot also said in a update ( last year i think ) that you should not know how the mechanics of your enemy champion works to beat him. WHAT ?! He is a splitpusher now that has not enough power to split push.

corki corresponds more to the description, Yone has only 25% magic dmg on autos so tabis are completely good against him, and his q are 100% physical damage that counts as auto attack on first enemy hit.

I think comparing yorick being nerfed to the ak-47 being easier to fire is a bit different. I think it's more like the ak-47 being harder to shoot so pros can't use it as well against you.

I used to play him mid with manamune and force of nature. Every other item was a warmog. It was godlike

I actually agree with the nerf for Yoric when people didn't know how to fight against it. It's a team game and even if 4/5 players knew how to fight him, it doesn't help when the 1 is usually the one who feeds. A lot of games have become more enjoyable and approachable by nerfing pubstompers.
