The DJI Mini 2 is the most popular drone currently on the market. With the release of the new DJI Mini 3 Pro, a lot of you are wondering if it's worth upgrading. In this video, I talk about some of the reasons you may want to hold on to your Mini 2, and a lot of reasons why you might want to upgrade. All these reasons are based on my experience flying both platforms, you opinions may vary.

I have the mini 2. It's more than enough for me. It definitely is not enough to justify spending double what it is to upgrade to mini 3 pro
Vor Monatrappy90
@Sage Majka But the air 2 is over 250g so a lot don't want to register/license themselves

@Armin Shah Really? With the ocusync 3? wow

@Armin Shah what you on about
Vor 27 TageReal Hunter
@Armin Shah try updating the firmware, turning off wifi and Bluetooth and making sure you point the controller toward the Mini3. Then do the test flight again and report back here with the results.
Vor MonatArmin Shah
I wanted to buy the mini 3 but the range is a disaster, it doesnt even reach 1km while the mini 2 can reach up to 6km
Vor MonatLucy Leheilleix
I love my mini 2 and as it does everything I need it too, there’s absolutely no need to upgrade now. The mini 3 pro is just too expensive.
Vor MonatJames Baynes
I’m a big fan of your vids! Personally, I’m going to stick with the Mini 2. I liken drone tech to EUC tech. Both seem to get much more expensive from year to year. I get new technology equals higher price, but the recent inflation crunch has tightened my wallet.
Vor MonatFrozn Fire
I think if u just get into drone, the Mini 2 is at a very good price now and still has all the basics you need. The Mini 3 has many nice addons such as sensors, video quality and tracking but they price is also quite a bit higher.
Vor MonatOswald Huynh
@Frozn Fire can you register for both recreation and business profit even though you haven’t yet ready to use it for money making until in the future when ready?
Vor Monatmike_HVAC
Just got mine a month ago, it's a GREAT first drone - loving it so far. Might upgrade in the future, but don't see myself doing it anytime soon.
Vor MonatFrozn Fire
@Nathan V I mean the Mini 3 nearly has a 1 inch sensor too and f1.7 vs 2.8 which would make it overall better at lowlight I guess. Aswell as stuff like vertical shooting, quieter operation and a huge flight time if u dont care about the
Vor MonatNathan V
The mini 3 pro isnt worth the price in my opinion because yeah you have sensors and follow things and the light weight but the air 2s has a 1inch sensor and you can find it for the same price. Only problem is the weight but most of the times they dont check your drone in places so it doesnt even matter. But yeah we shall see it the price drops
Vor MonatDosomestuff
The mini 2 and se are prob the best for beginners
Vor MonatBiker In A Hat
The Mini 2 is the smallest drone I own. It goes with me on the motorcycle or on hikes all the time. I'm a hobbyist only and people look at my photos and videos on their phones. Most aren't going to know if I flew a Mini 3 or a Mini 2, especially after I've edited the photos/footage before releasing them. I'd rather put money into my DSLR stuff before handing it over to DJI every time they put out a new model. :-)

Great comparison/highlight video! I’m gonna stick w my 2 (if I was hired more for drone captures then I could justify the upgrade) but really wish the 2 had object avoidance and very cool how the 3 u don’t need to use your iPhone for flying.
Vor MonatSimon gray
I have the mini 2 with combo pack and love it. I was going to get the mini3 on credit but changed my mind as its just to expensive when compared to what you get with the mini2 package. Also, i think the mini 2 camera gives a sharper image over the mini 3.
Vor TagJer Goes
The Mini 3 isn't and shouldn't be considered a replacement for the Mini 2, they share the same weight class and name but that's it. The Mini 2 is a beginner / entry level drone, the mini 3 is a higher end drone more in line with the Air 2S sort of area in both capability and price point. Should you upgrade from the Mini 2 to the Mini 3, only if you were considering upgrading to the Air 2S.
Vor MonatRon Brown
You make a good point about the Mini 2 being compatible with the Litch app and other third party mapping apps. So if having access to these apps is important to you, upgrading to the Mini 3 is not in cards at this point. Great video, and thanks for sharing.
Vor MonatBeautiful Norfolk
I got a Mini 1 which I picked up cheap in January, but the 3 Pro looks like a great upgrade for me, in particular the controller, 4k, and HDR. Thanks for the info :-)
Vor MonatShay Matheson
Thanks for the informative video. I've been using the mini 2 for 18 months or so and love it. Still seriously thinking of getting the mini 3 pro for the extra features and larger batteries. Glad we don't have the weight restrictions here in NZ.
Vor MonatSage Majka
If you have no weight restrictions, why not just get, The Mavic AIR 2S or Mavic AIR 2? You can purchase a Refurbished Mavic AIR 2 Fly More Combo for $669, I only paid $714 shipped for the AIR 2 Fly More Combo & 1 Year Care Refresh Plan. it's the best deal out, on a awesome drone.
Vor MonatAl's Man Cave Hobbies
Cheers for that really useful comparison. I keep swaying back and forth with the Mini 3 and realise that it's not so much of an upgrade as a brand new drone. I think the stills and video camera specs would do it for me but I'm sad to say the new uprated battery will not be available in the UK. As I intend to work my way through the A2 CofC this may not remain a problem but I'll probably hold on to the Mini 2 for a few months at least.
Vor MonatJohnny
I have waited to see what the mini 3 had to offer before jumping on a mini 2... doubled price was not what I wanted, and the newer options were irrelevant for my use. Still an impressive 250g model.
Vor MonatDerek Cox
I enjoy my mini 2 a lot,but I’ve also pre ordered the mini 3 because of the upgraded sensors and camera.

I purschased the mini 2, to be used as a hobby. And it OVERexceeds my expectations. It is a amazing little drone. I dont use it eneough to justify a upgrade. It just wouldnt make sense. The mini 3 seems to be a beast of a drone. Great specs ec. But to be honest, not specs I need as a novice flyer. Im pretty impressed on the 2. And im sure there is going to be a new one coming out every year. I have learned to be content with what I have instead of jumping to get the neweset when what i currently own is somthing I already consider to be a amazing product . Thanks for the great review pee usal
Vor 27 TageJR Alicea
Hi Ignacio, thank you for this content. Last year I was considering the mini 2 but did not pull the trigger. Now the mini 3 with avoidance and other features looks attractive. My sole purpose of purchasing a drone would be for recreational purposes, use out when gravel cycling, around the house or at a park. Nothing commercial of with the intent of making money. I noticed the Mavic air 2 is priced attractively vs the mini 3. Would the air 2 be adequate for my purposes? Or am I looking over any advantages of the mini 3 other than weight?
Vor MonatJR Alicea
FYI ... after more research, I've decided to.go with mini 3 pro.

For my needs, my mini 2 is great. I have never crashed it so I don’t need obstacle avoidance and I would never use the vertical camera. The controller with the built in screen would be nice to have.

It's like anything in the techy world. The Mini 3 will be obsolete next year and we will want to buy the mini 4 series. It is very important to balance your priorities vs needs and resist the temptation to always have the latest gadgets on our hands.

competition is always good for us consumers. If DJI didn't have any challenge from other company (especially Autel),we will never see this kind of big jump in specs in Mini 3.
Vor MonatAzharHassan
@?????? it's not about market domination. it's about specs. Mini 3 Pro obviously DJI attempt to maintain it's dominance in small drone market. Mini 2 doesn't have stiff competition as Mini 3 facing right now. fortunately DJI act fast, not like some other giant brand (example : Samsung in smartphone market) who still dreaming about dominating market while other brand already catch-up with better spec and lower price.
Vor Monat??????
Personally I feel like dji still doesn’t really have much competition, dji just absolutely dominates with like 95% market share
Vor MonatWesley P
I have the Mini 2 and I’d love to upgrade, but my Mini 2 was $749 and the same kit for the Mini 3 Pro is $1229… That’s almost a $500 increase! As much as I want obstacle avoidance (among other features), I just can’t justify it at that price
Vor MonatWesley P
@Eddslens For that price tag I’d expect upward obstacle avoidance sensors (like the Air 2S), a charging brick, and as a bonus, for the Mini 2 batteries to be compatible. It is packed with features but at almost $500 more that’s enough to buy a second drone (like the SE)
Vor MonatEddslens
I think it’s a very fair price personally, it is stacked with features, obstacle avoidance is amazing, the nd filter system is way better, has focus track!! Hyperlapses ahh man so many features I can’t wait to use. Lower aperture so better low light footage, portrait shooting for social media posts! Upward pointing gimbal.. honestly it is a game changing drone and all for less than half the cost of my canon r6 body (without a lens) and that doesn’t fly through the sky. The results this drone will enable you to capture is well worth £1000 compared to any other kind of camera at that price range let alone one that flys :) it’s entirely dependant on the users needs but for £500 more I think it’s worth it
Vor MonatFaluthe

Can we expect a Mini 3 (not pro) at some point ? Would love to get a mini3 with new camera/gimbald but maybe without the sensors, but using the same battery as the mini2...

I have the Mavic 2 pro. Great drone, but I’m thinking about getting the mini 3 pro to take with me when I travel. Smaller and lighter would make it easier to travel around the world with and looks like a decent setup. I’ve never cared for obstacle avoidance as it seems more annoying to me than anything else. I fly in the sky, not next to obstacles
Vor MonatArmin Shah
The range is ultra bad, it doesn't even reach 1km while the mini 2 gets up to 6 km

I have the first Mavic Mini I bought a wee bit more than two years ago and been enjoying it very much. But now that there is a significant amount of new features with the Mini 3 Pro, I will definitely be getting the Combo soon. I have lots of accessories for the Mini One and in looking at the camera gimbal on the Mini 3 Pro, it doesn't llok like the filters from Mini 1 will fit the Mini 3.

Mini 2 was a MASSIVE game changer and step up from the original Mini for sure with the transmission that alone is completely worth the upgrade. I'll stick with my Mini 2 for now. Maybe in a year or 3 I'll get the Mini 3. I hardly use the Mini 2 as it is. If I were in the EU/UK I'd consider it strongly though. As always; good food for thought.

I sold my mini 2 for 150 and bought the Mavic 3. The mini 2 was an awesome drone. I did not like how it handled in the wind compared to my old Air 2. I sank the Air 2 in the bottom of a lake. LOL. The Mavic 3 fits me better than the small drones.
Vor MonatCristian Guedes
I will buy the Mini 3. Not now, though. I mean, the thing that I miss in Mini 2 is the active tracking feature. But I will not buy that new drone now. Maybe in 3 or 5 months. Vor MonatSage Majka
Yep i'll wait, until they have the refurbished, Mini 3 deals out, & I can save $200. I have a 9th gen iPad for my Mini 2 & AIR 2, & can use either controller, so I'm just interested in the drone without the controller.
Vor MonatJon Don
Have a mini 2 and if I were to upgrade, I’d go to air 2S. Mini 3 costs 2x as much as mini 2, really not a fair comparison.
Vor Monat3D Models & Toys
It always depends on everybody needs and purposes. You can choose DJI Mini 1, 2 or 3, each have their own capabilities and accessories. I still think Mini 3 Pro is slightly overpriced because it shouldn´t be in that place, it canabalize Mavic 2 and Air 2s, so Mini 3 Pro position and price are misplaced. Dji couldn´t make the upgrades without increasing too much the price so they took the safe way by increasing significantly the price with fewer units, thats why the base version is already sold out, and people who order now will get their order in months from now.
Vor MonatNathan V
@3D Models & Toys we gout the same thougts. Lets remove the backward firing sensors, normal small controller for a mini and it could allready cost a 200 less and skip the pro because pro should just be for 1inch or higher. Bigger sensor means more room for light and less noise. I mean these drones or for movie capture. Not to toy around in the garden like a fpv drone.
Vor Monat3D Models & Toys
@Trouble Maker Thats my point, both Air 2s/Mavic 2 and Mini 3 pro currently are on the same price category with similar capabilities, its a bit confusing. Thats why Mini 3 pro shouldnt be in that position, it should have been named "Mini 3" and have a bit less features and be a little cheaper from what it costs now.
Vor MonatTrouble Maker
In my opinion, mini 3 are packed with capabilities on air2s which means it seems like Air2S mini. So I think it is not misplaced.

Vor MonatPaul Harris
I'm not a pro and my flying is for pleasure/social media. I am satisfied with my Parrot Anafi with one exception, transmission strength. I just purchased the Mini 2 ($450) to deal with situations where WiFi interference makes flying the Anafi an issue. Camera's on both of these drones are very good, the Anafi has tracking and waypoints so there was nothing about the Mini 3 that made it a must have for me.
Vor MonatP F
great review! I'm a hobbyist wanting to start shooting international documentaries (just as a hobby). I have the mini 2 and really like it. I love DJI but yikes, the cost is easily double what you can get the mini 2 (fly more combo) for. I see that the images are "better" but not that much better. I'm planning on using the mini 2 until it's warranty is out, then, depending upon how much I actually end up using drones for filming, would consider the mini 3 in a year or two. Thanks again for a very practical review.
Vor MonatWiseguy Smith
When it comes to the price increase over the Mini 2 , one has to keep in mind the current high rate of inflation globally. Did anyone really expect DJI to add all these extra features while keeping the price close to the Mini 2?
Vor MonatEric Soto
I have the Mini 2 and as much as I want the DJI Mini 3 pro. I don’t use the mini 2 enough to justify upgrading. Does the "HDR" function work when using the D-Cenelike gamma? Or,...does DJI simply "bake-in" their pre-color graded HDR look into a normal contrast rec709 profile? This is important because HDR leaves room for color grading but only if it's baked into a flat profile. If it's baked into a high contrast profile, then there is nothing that can really be done to it in post.
Vor MonatSkycam509
You make a good point about how much we even use our Mini 2. Mine is mostly a backup for my Air 2s, so I wouldn't probably replace it with the Mini 3 Pro, but would it possibly replace my Air 2s? All the footage and photos I'm seeing from it look great. Is the 48MP photo claim legit? I know I'd lose the upward sensors, but what other downside would there be? Thanks for all the great videos. You've been busy!
Vor MonatClaudiu Cristian
Aside from the upwards sensors, you’re looking at smaller camera sensor, 8-bit color profile as supposed to 10-bit on the Air 2S, but probably the most important downside is wind resistance. The Air 2S is a beast in strong winds. I actually just flown mine today in the deserts of Nevada at 1000ft altitude and although i was keep getting strong wind warnings, the Air 2S kept it’s position and crisp camera view the whole time! Ps: i had it up there for no more then 1-2minutes and quickly brought it down to under 400ft. I’m not one to break the law, but i’ve had an itch to take it higher in the sky for quite some time😁
Vor MonatPramod Kanakath
Useful video. Thanks. Correct me if I'm wrong. You really need to buy the Fly more kit if you want to fly cos the package doesn't include a battery charger? Also, is there an option to buy the charger and extra batteries without buying the kit? To me this package that doesn't come with a charger sounds a bit tricky. Not sure if I want to upgrade to 3 from 2.
Vor MonatLS
The Mini 2 does everything I need except cope with wind. And there has been a lot of wind lately. The Mini 3 is supposed to be slightly better in the wind. But enough to matter? I don't know. If I can't fly, all the other things like sensors and cameras are no help. What I want is a bigger drone, more wind resistance ability.

The thing that no one seem to recognize is that the camera of the dji mini 3 PRO is no protected. If the drone crashes the camera will have direct contact with the object and on th other hand the camera of the mini 2 is protected by the litle plastic that is overlapping the camera

I have a Mini 1 (original). One of the big attractions of the Mini 3 for me is the new controller. One of the reasons I don't fly my Mini 1 more is because I get a lot of spam calls and I figure one will occur at the worst possible time. Any thoughts?

@Wiseguy Smith Good idea, thanks.

I have a mini 2 and I always put my phone in airplane mode while flying.
Vor MonatTroColp68
3rd party apps were good for the mini 2 because there were more features like follow and tracking....these are included in the min 3 so there is no need for a 3rd party app anymore....

Conclusion: If you want to moove on from a Mini 2,go for an Air 2 S

Not if you're trying to avoid registering and licensing

Thank you very much. As a mini 2 owner I prefer to wait few months for the price to drop and accessories to be available.

Always great videos. Thanks for sharing!

the problem is they made the mini 2 too good. the answer to this question for 99% of the people that bought and are loving their mini 2 is not just no but HELL NO. wait till black friday and pick one up if they have a crazy good sale.
Vor MonatDRCarpetDR
47 minute battery would be well worth the upgrade for me. But not available in most countries including in the USA. Keeping my mini 2 with variouse available software mods. At this price point why not just go with refurbished Air 2s. Air 2s is superior and yet I still dont see it enough superior to my Mini 2.

Flypath Im still waiting my mini 3 fly more combo, but while letting go my mini 2 set, can you advise which bag that come with the combo had the larger capacity for mini 3 complete fly more accessories?

Great video as per. Just the one question about the rc pro controller, will we be able to connect our phone to it for the fpv Goggles.

looks like a great mini drone ;) thanks for this informative review!

Will the mini 2 batteries fit the 3? I don't want to spend another $1,100 for another fly more combo. My 2 was like $800 out the door with the fly more combo and everything. I'd upgrade if they would be compatible
Vor MonatFlytPath
no

The mini 2 does have forward obstacle avoidance and two sensors right there on the front smaller, but in much the same place as the mini 3.
Vor MonatBruce Bidinoff
I understand that the mini 3 can withstand some rather strong Winds. That is important for where I live, which is in a valley running north to south, which attracts wind.
Vor MonatBruno Camacho
definitely worth it just because obstacle avoidance... its a must for me since my mini 2 crashed with an antena in a construction site... never saw it again

The question for me, is it an upgrade from the Air 2S?

As much as I want that 4K 60fps and 1080P 120fps, I just spent $600 on the Mini 2 fly more combo one year ago. The new one by itself is $800 and the flymore is still an additional $180 to 250. Im going to wait til next year and get the non pro mini 3 I’m sure they’ll release, maybe it’ll just have the upgraded camera without all the new sensors. We know there’s still a market for cheaper drones without collision avoidance.
Vor MonatWeights and Waifus
Odds of another DJI drone without collision avoidance is slim to none. They lost way too much money replacing crashed mini 2’s through DJI Refresh. Don’t hold your breath on a non pro model.

I'm thinking about getting my first drone. I'm choosing between the Mavic Air 2s vs. the Mini 3 Pro. Which one should I get?
Vor MonatBen B
I’m asking myself the same thing… I’m just an amateur no professional coming from the mini so don’t Want to bother registering and paying FAA every couple of years. Just like the smaller package the mini 2/3 offers so that’s what I’ll stick with

As with most DJI upgrades the main focus is on the camera. I enjoy flying my drone and later looking at the videos that I have taken but, I am not a photographer and do not post videos to media. I do not possess a 107 license nor do I want one. The only advantage I see for a person like myself would be the controller. Is that worth $500 to me? Also optical avoidance front back and down seems like it would have been better to have it on the sides as that is where you are most likely to have a crash. Other than that I enjoy my mini 2 and will not upgrade until I see upgrades in the app and a controller w/video feed that will work with all DJI drones. By the way I still enjoy flying my spark that has optical avoidance.

Thinking about it..will my smart controller that I use on both my Mavic Zoom and Mini 2 work with this new platform?

I have bought mini 2 fmc few months ago on the 2year loan there is no chance I'm getting this one now, and for my small once a year travel few mi from home on vacation, it more then enough. Mini 3 Pro is the best mini drone out there.

Thanks for the great video - I have a Mini 2 and need an extra Video out from the controller for a spotter - does the new RC controller give HDMI or WiFi video out anyone?
Vor MonatJohn Kay
love my mini 2 but if something were to happen, it's nice to know I have a controller and can just swap it out with the mini 3 drone only purchase
Vor MonatIn_10z
I love my Mini 2. Mini 3 is nice but not worth almost twice the price. If DJI could've pulled this off for $600, they'd have my wallet.
Vor MonatJariVisuals
What is your opinion on getting the Mini 3 Pro if you have the Mavic Air 2? Almost the same specs, only slightly larger sensor on the mini, but the weight and size (and al the drone laws that comes with them) makes me thinking about up / side-grading. (and selling MA2)
Vor MonatSonderax
as somebody looking to buy their first drone within the next month would you recommend the Mini 2 or Mini 3.
Vor MonatNick Sci
I currently have a mini 2 love it. But I crashed it and I'm having trouble getting it fixed and not sure what dji will charge (one prop doesn't spin) Two questions I'm not clear on: 1) does the mini 2 remote get the same distance as the new remote with mini 3? Or does the new controller enable it to have more flight distance? 2) are the mini 2 batteries compatible? Or were those new batteries that gave it longer life? Thanks

Around 2:50. I have an Air 2S as well as a mini 2. You can preorder just the mini 3 for around $660. I already have two controllers that should work fine with the mini 3. So, at $660, it is almost within my budget. Just have to save up a little more cash before this summer. Also, I watched your video comparing video quality of the DJI drones and the Autel. I think the quality of both my Air 2S and mini 2 are superior to the mini 3. I have a really nice large monitor so I could really see the difference. Perhaps, the mini 3 just needs an update to bring the video quality up? Since my Air 2S has OcuSync 3.0, I'm assuming that I can use my controllers with the mini 3 using OcuSync 3.0?

I love how he talks about the mini 3 like anyone can just go out and get one now. Your going to be waiting a month for the mini 3 with the crazy expensive remote, and 2-3 months for the base setup.
