Superb video as always! I truly trust your assessment on these drones knowing you will not only go in depth on the positives but also not skimp on any constructive criticism. I picked up one with the fly more package and new controller and pretty happy so far. Not sure yet if I’ll keep my beloved Air2 or sell it yet.

Thanks so much for this! Am considering between Mini SE and Mini 2, and now comes this. How about the total weight with the case + fly more combo + using regular controller? Before Mini 3 Pro comes out, I was leaning toward Mini SE because of the weight, for lightweight travel. When I was traveling, I opt to bring Mini 1 rather than my Mavic Air 1 as Mini 1’s total package is quite significantly lighter.

Great work as always. I always get stressed out when I see new drone launches and wonder if it's time to trade up my Mavic 2 Pro. You make the shots look that good! Would you consider sharing some of the raw footage where you are orbiting rock formations so we can test how well this drone might perform for photogrammetry?

I don't know if you have to trade since you have a superior sensor, and you won't get much for the older drone. I do like all of the tracking type options though...

Very comprehensive review. If I hadn’t already ordered the Mini 3 Pro, I would have after your review! Obstacle avoidance and tracking have been on my wish list since the original Mini, so glad they have it now. I was under the impression the Mini 3 would take the same batteries as the Mini 2, but that appears to be incorrect. Guess I’ll need the fly more combo.

I have had the original mini since it came out and still think it does an amazing job for my needs, but this new mini3pro has all the features I could have wanted (quiet, portability, active tracking, more power for the wind) so it will be very tempting to look at upgrading. Thanks for the great review and all the amazing footage of one of my favourite parts of Scotland! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Hi Neal. I have flown the mini over 300km and have loved it. I recently purchased the mini 3 and the difference is unblievable, it flies the same but the quality of the images and the video are amazing. Also i can say that it handles way better in high winds as tested yesterday. The features all work flawlessly too as expected from DJI . Well worth the upgrade from the mini 1 in my opinion.. Just thought i'd give my opinion jumping from the mini 1.

I've seen a lot of reviews today of the Mini 3 but this one stands out in a positive sense! Beautiful video quality, pleasant voice to hear and the information I want to know. Good tips also with lightroom. New subscriber here!

I'd love to see a photo comparison between Air2S and the mini 3 48Mp mode, just to see differences in quality in shadow and light areas, and also how each stack up in low light. If there's very little except if you pixelpeep then Mini 3 would definitely be a winner

I'm an Air 2S owner (since August). I'm getting envious of how quiet the new range of drones are. If I did nighttime photography/video, I'd be even more envious. And the longer battery life. The Air 2S is a great all round drone and a terrific package for features to price, but the drone industry is moving relentlessly on.

Great job as always you guys. I think if you've got used to 10-bit you're going to notice going back to 8-bit. I had a P4 before my Mavic 2 Pro and the quality is like night and day even outside those demanding sunrise/sunset scenarios. I'd say that there's a compelling argument to get an Air 2S instead, especially since they're dropping in price with an Air upgrade on the cards from DJI and also how much better it flies in more than moderately testing wind environments. That 90º rotation would be sweet for panos though and the upward 60º tilt means you get more sky in your sphere 360s too. Cheers from Australia. :)

I agree with what you say. Mini 3 Pro is a great drone but the Air 2S is superior in many ways.

Makes me want one even though I already own an Air 2S! 😁 Question: The Mini 3 Pro is available with DJI's new "DJI RC" controller which looks a lot like their spendy RC Pro controller (and a bit like the older DJI Smart Controller) but costs considerably less than the 'Pro' model. Any idea what the difference are between the pricey RC Pro and the DJI RC? Cheers!

I love doing speed ramps & Motion blurs but I think I’ve been using Ripple Training’s set, so I shall check that out thank you 😊 loving all the content lately! Especially that sensor comparison chart, I tried to find it elsewhere but couldn’t!

Thank you! You can do a speed ramp in FCPX using Shift+B. I then apply a motion blur plugin to the speeded up section. It's from @RyanNangle. It's a great find for FCPX.

It looks cold there, with spectacular scenery. I've been watching your videos for a long while and appreciate your honest feedback. I wish I'd have taken your suggestion of using Filmora, instead of DaVinci. I'm sure DaVinci is MUCH more powerful but it does take a long while to get anything done there. I have taken your advice on portable SSD storage though!

Great review and thank you for it. But it does not have a Drone 'C' classification so it is possible it could finish up in the high y restricted legacy class once the powers that be actually get the Drone Classification system up and running. To be clear, this is not DJI's fault, it's down to slow decision making in the EU and UK.

Watched a lot of Mini 3 reviews but this is one of the best. Initially put order in for Mini 3 with new RC controller but cancelled after further thought/analysis. Despite convenience of not having to use phone there are too many drawbacks for me. 700 nits isn't very bright by today's standards and think it'll struggle in really bright conditions. Also not confirmed if it'll work with other DJI drones and as an existing Air2s owner I don't want to be carrying two controllers around. Opted to go for Tripltek Pro 8 instead with DJI tablet mount for existing RC-N1 controller. Was infuriated to find DJI aren't selling standalone Mini 3 without any controller until JULY. Great way to pi#$ off existing DJI customers!

For sure, the Tripletek is much brighter.

@Stewart and Alina Thanks for the reply! That´s strange. A new regulation is in place since long now. Still the framework is not in place for the manufacturers to follow. The European Union has a homework to do here!

Cheers! No, DJI pointed out that the regs haven't been formalised yet so you can't put a classification on a drone when there is no official framework in place.

Great review as always Stewart - I still have the original mavic pro, but tempted to get this due to the weight and therefore lack of license requirement for wedding use. For video, do you see much of a difference in quality between the original mavic pro and the mini 3 pro? Thanks!

Haven't looked side-by-side but they're both excellent. I suspect the Mini 3 Pro might take the win with it's better bitrate and less noisy shadows.

So does the new controller work with any other drones? I wonder if the 1.7 lens means we'll have to use the neutral density filters more regularly...? And I do wonder how stable the video is on windy days, compared to the Air 2...

Great review, thank you. One question regarding the gimbal - on the Mini 2 when flying in windy(ish) conditions, the gimbal can suddenly flick (like it is doing a very quick reset) not a problem on photos but it can ruin a video; does the Mini 3 suffer this?

No, I’ve not had that problem at all. I’ve taken up in some crazy windy conditions as you may see in future videos and it hasn’t happened once to me.

I have the same question. I've had several Mini 2 shots ruined because of this. Hopefully the Mini 3 doesn't suffer from this issue.

Great, very informative video, as always Stewart. I loved the active track of the drone following your car along the Rhu Road, from Arisaig, and the shots at Rhu beach. This is our annual holiday destination and, as you said in your earlier video, it is drone heaven, especially Camusdarach beach. Just received a Mini 2 for Christmas and loving it so won't be upgrading, to a Mini 3 Pro, for a while but, it does seem like the sub 250g drone of choice.

Thanks. I really enjoy your videos. I recently bought an Air 2S which is fantastic but now I'm disappointed it didn't come with an RC similar to the Mini 3 Pro. An option is the RC Pro but it is way too expensive. Do you know if the Mini 3 Pro RC is compatible with the Air 2S or if DJI will produce a similar RC for the Air 2S.

Nice review thanks! I would doubt that the image quality will be as good as the Autel Nano Plus, especially in low light. The DJI does not have the RYYB filter like the Autel. It will be interesting to see comparisons!

Thanks! So far the answer to your question is no. The only other drone mentioned by DJI for the controller is the Mavic 3.

Mini 3 Pro plus the new screen controller! How insanely good looking that combo is!

Thanks for nice review! Could you please clarify me 2 things: 1) does the brightness change smoothly (stepless) in the video shooting mode in AutoISO? It happens when you shoot in sunny weather and you have to use auto ISO. But when the sun sets behind a cloud or comes out, or there is a "flight" from behind the house (from dark scene), the brightness changes dramatically with hard steps in video. For example in Mavic 2 Pro the automatic exposure works good but with step changes (the brightness does not change smoothly as on regulary camera); 2) is it possible to shoot "at an angle" with the drone's camera (it has a vertical mode and a horizontal more - so is it possible to move it at an angle, such as little imitating of FPV or moves imitation with an electronic steadicam), especially the joysticks on the remote controller are similar to ones on FPV?

Yeah great little drone. I like really the new RC Controller, hopefully it will be usable for alle other DJI drones too. Maybe also separately sold. One proposal for your comparison list: I'm missing the data transfer rate which is very important for the video quality. Cheers DrDuu

What do you think of the Photo quality? Just editing some stills I took earlier today and noticed the pictures have a sharpening / oily painting texture to them when you pixel peep, something the Mini 2 and Mavic 2 Pro didn’t have in the past. Interesting to hear your views 🙂.

What a pleasant surprise this morning. I was about to throw more good money after bad repairing an Autel Evo. Then I got an email from DJI about the new Mini 3 and knew Stewart and Alina would have a review up. Can't wait to see the Mini 3 to Air 2 S comparison. Maybe just a little better flight time and handles the wind better.

Stewart, I am upgrading from the original Mavic Air and I was set on buying the Air2S but now I’m considering the Mini 3. One of my primary concerns about the Mini 3 is its ability to handle windy conditions. My Mavic Air would handle winds of up to about 12 mph before it struggled. Can you give me an idea of how the Mini would handle wind speeds of 12 mph? Also, if it were you, which drone would you choose, the Air2S or the Mini 3?

I have the air 2s, ordered the mini 3, then cancelled it. i'm going to wait and see how others fair with it first.. i like knowing the air 2s can handle most of the windy conditions i've had.. the mini 2 struggled..

There may have been a couple of others trying to get out there first on the MINI 3 but they are just noise with little content. Great timing Stewart! Literally just got back home to Finland from a photographic roadtrip in Scotland only to see this video. Visited Etive Mor Waterfall, Rannoch Moor, Glenfinnan, Old Man of Storr and other locations seen in this video. Such a beautiful country to explore from ground and air. Many unreachable places where that vertical mode works wonders in certain compositions without having to crop and lose resolution.

Vertical shooting is a killing feature, I hate that mini 2 doesn't have it.

God how I hate vertical video. Phones by default should automatically make video in landscape even if you hold it vertical. #justsaynotoverticalvideo !

Especially for landscape still photographers. HDR bracketed panos will rival FF, I'll bet.

Vertical mode + 60 degrees up. Does it allow to take 360 panoramic pics without to have to rebuild the sky? Very nice review Stewart and Alina!

Seems the information is coming now that the distance is schockingly bad with the RC (so far from the advertised marketing material anyway). Even the Mini SE seems to be a lot better in wifi only. Great presentation sir! I mostly film in the Colorado and Wyoming mountains and high plains deserts. This little guy would not do well in the unpredictable winds. So far I will have have to stay with my Inspire 2 drones, and patiently wait to see what the Inspire 3 will bring. I must admit, loading them in my truck, along with that indestructible coffin and batteries is starting to wear on these 60 year old bones. So the smaller drones are starting to look very sexy. Do you have any news on the Inspire 3? Thanks again for the great review Sir.

Cheers John! Don't know what the future of the Inspire series is TBH. Your right though, the Mini 3 can fly in high winds but it's not the right tool for the job if that's your normal shooting environment.

It's good but you still have to keep an eye on the histogram because it's certainly not 'super' bright.

Great review buddy! Just would like to point out something. I think full frame equivalent f stop equivates to only depth of field. Luminance of the image is anyways going to be the same at same fstop. what do you think?

That crop factor aperture thingy was a bit oddly explained here.. The f/2.8 apertures in all of the sensors lets in the exact same amount of light, but the "different" apertures just makes a difference for the depth of field. The smaller sensor doesn't mean that the lens is any "worse", but the smaller sensor surely will be worse in low light - just not darker at same aperture and same lighting conditions. Other than that, great video as always!

Amazing review ! Which memory cards do you recommend? Also do you think they will update mastershots and quick shots to have 24fps and d log?

Cheers! DJI has a list of recommended cards on the spec page. We just have a bunch of Sandisk ones. It's good they don't need to be the latest and the fastest because it's only 8-bit footage. I've been moaning about 30fps quickshots since they came out so there must be some reason for it. I should run it by them!

Thank you for your excellent review Stewart. There is no question that this drone is a huge advance on the Mini 2 and has pretty much killed off the Air 2 series. My only gripes are that the motors are not more powerful and the video lacks the crispness of the Autel Nano. I wish DJI would buy out Autel and use their sensors - what a drone would that make!

So many tempting upgrades from my Mini 2. I love that vertical is back. I missed it from my old Mavic and it's ideal for 3 shot panos, shot manually. How does the 48mp photo work? I assume it's a sensor 'jiggle' - how much better do you feel the end result is for, say, large prints?

Does active track work with vertical mode? Also, I have the magic 3 And the RC pro. Will my RC pro work with the Mini 3 Pro?

I was going to get the RC pro but it’s a long wait, so I went with the standard controller instead.
