I’ve had a lot of questions about the new DJI RC controller for the Mini 3 Pro drone and in this clip I take a closer look at it and compare it to the DJI RC-N1 controller. This should help you better understand both options so you can make the choice that’s right for you. Thanks for watching and please let me know if you have any questions!

As usual an excellent video, and thank you, but a couple of questions. As I presume the DJI RC doesn't have a SIM card you have no real time data, for example map details, how are they refreshed? In particular if the last time it was on with a WiFi connection was at home and then you travel abroad or to another part of the country, how do maps get updated for new location? Also what about unlocking geofence (not sure I have that named correctly as I haven't used it to-date) surely that needs an online feed? You could buy a very good sun shade for the RC-N1 from DJI which is made specifically for it. I'm sure the DJI RC would also benefit from a shade in full sun, but is it possible to use a shade with it? Finally can you edit video from the drone on the DJI RC? Again many thanks.

Rick I think I hit on RTH exact landings. Try reading this and it works for me. I wanted to mention to you about perfect landings no one knows much about. If you launch and allow the drone to rise then it stops, then go up to 30 feet or exactly 10 meters as you say and wait a few seconds still and then go fly the drone should land exactly on a pin prick of a spot as mine does every single time and it even states Compensating for a landing in a few words if it is windy. All of this always begins at the 30 foot height on return (RTH). The Minis except for the three will not do that. But all other drones have it including Mavic 1 pro, Mavic 2 pro, Mavic 1 Platinum, and Mavic 3 and 2 S as well. You have to go to that height and allow it to see the pad because if you do not it will not look for it when dropping to a 'FINAL' as it starts really looking at that 30 foot or 10 meter level. If not is is too late to adjust perfectly and will go by GPS only. When I first got my new Mavics all of them I had to select a box to do a exact landing before launching several times and then it went away and does it all the time as long as I rise on take off and then after a second or two go up to that 30 foot or 10 meter height and pause again for a few seconds.. If you only go to 20 feet as you did it is too late when returning as a decision has already been made to use the GPS location. For me close is only good in horseshoes and hand grenades. LOL Ray C.

Do you know which one of these last long in terms of hours (from 100% to 0% charge)? Also, when you connect your phone to the RC N1 does it starts charging your phone? If so is there any way to stop it? Also, if it charges your phone how long it lasts (in terms of hrs)?
Vor 2 MonateLiPo PWR
The RC-N1 will last 4hrs while charging device or 6hrs without charging device. The DJI RC will last about 4hrs. When it comes to charging your device, it is a very slow trickle charger. In my case it does not even charge, just slows down the rate of discharge. For iPhones it will momentarily charge then stop. You have to manually turn on phone charging. For android it will always start charging your phone unless you manually turn it off. For both iOS and android you can access the charging setting by going to the three dots in the top right corner> control> phone charging. If you live in warm/hot climates (over 75f or 24c) please do yourself a favor and get the controller with the screen (DJI RC). Pretty much any smartphone on the market will thermal throttle from heat and dim the display, sometimes even freeze. The new RC is designed to handle heat up to 104f/40c while still maintaining maximum screen brightness.

An issue I have noticed with the RC controller (w. Screen). Your right the new controller does not get the range the old controller does. Even if you don't fly past vlos you want the strongest signal you can get when flying even at close distances. The new controller with it's internal antenna does not give that to you.

In the Mini 3 Pro users manual it shows on the new RC Controller No 10, (For connecting the DJI Cellular module to be purchased separately and supported later through Firmware updates). What is this? Why do you think DJI have added a GNSS Receiver to the New RC Controller (Pilot position on the map?). GNSS Satellites have a polar orbit and GPS receivers tend not to use ones that are just emerging above the horizon from the South, or receding below the horizon in the North to calculate position. The DJI Fly App shows the number of Satellites, but not position accuracy. I use a Tripltek Android Tablet with the Controller and run GPS test in the background. This shows both the number and the accuracy of where I am and is a good indication of the drone's position as well.

Thanks for the post and all of the DJI drones have to adjust to the local limits on transmission power. DJI doesn't set these limits but have software the can recognize where the drone is and adjust it to local regulations. Unfortunately there is no "universal" standard for limits, each country sets their own. All DJI is doing is following the law and keeping fliers compliant. In most cases, exceeding these limits can cause massive issues with other communications and carry huge fines and even jail time if someone is caught blasting more power than is legal. This is especially true in the ISM band (the frequency these drones use to fly) since medical equipment, Wifi and other popular tech lives there. I'm a fan of following the rules to enjoy the hobby. Just like with speeding through a school zone, if you break the rules, you put others in danger and it's a really selfish thing to do for any flier breaking the local power rules for transmission.

YOUR GIVING AWAY DRONE I REALLY LOVE DJI MAVIC MINI 2
Vor 3 MonateEd Vergara
I got mine last week. That 700 nits display sucks; I can't believe you're trying to justify it by saying it's not gonna eat up your battery. You can barely see the screen in bright sunlight and of course the glare doesn't help. I would rather they used a 1000 nits display and beef up the battery; I'm willing to pay more. I'm used to my Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra at 1200 nits and it doesn't heat up like an iPhone then go dim. The downside of course is size. I want both the bright display and size. If they had made the RC Pro an option I would have gone for it.
Vor 2 MonateDrone Valley
@Ed Vergara Ed, no worries, discussions are always welcomed here. The thing most folks don't realize is that the development of the Smart Controllers and the DJI Fly application are done by different teams. The reason the Smart Controllers will always be stable is because DJI controls the version of Android on the device and one of the reasons they "lock" it down. This way they know they have a solid build. Android on phones and tablets are the wild west with every manufacturer adding their own tweaks to the builds, which makes it hard to certify them against new versions of the application. As for the Remote ID, all DJI has to do is turn on the section of their application that allows you to enter you personal information and the drone can broadcast that and be compliant. It's already in the software and ready to go.
Vor 2 MonateEd Vergara
@Drone Valley I don't want you to think I'm arguing with you. Just having a discussion. Anyway it's interesting you should say something about having firmware obsolete on the Android side considering the RC is Android based. Does that mean that they'll bite the dust when Google/Android decide to upgrade to a new version? I'm not saying I prefer the phone; I would prefer to not have to use it. I like not having to deal with the phone but I can see that if I want to fly in full sun I will need to use the RC-Ni1. Only time will tell when the Remote ID becomes operational next year what DJI will do. I just think they'll take advantage of the situation and make everybody buy new controllers; drones for sure. From my point of view DJI has not been kind to their customers. Anyway ... thanks for engaging me in the discussion.
Vor 2 MonateDrone Valley
@Ed Vergara Ed, I appreciate the reply but the DJI RC is working fine for me. I had to crank up the brightness a bit to be able to see it in the sun but I use for most of my flying. If you love the phone, you have the choice of using the RC-Ni1 controller and I'm sure you could easily trade/sell the DJI RC on the secondary market at a profit to make the swap. I don't agree that the DJI RC is non-functional and I prefer an integrated controller since everything is designed to work together better. With any phone/tablet attached to the RC-N1 you'll always have to worry that the next firmware update might make it obsolete, especially on the Android side of the house. As for the Remote ID question, the controller has nothing to do with that since the broadcast is coming from the drone when it's finally implemented next year. And something to keep in mind is that DJI has had this ability incorporated into their drones since the Mavic 2 was released and are compatible today with the emerging Wifi standard. No other drone company out there has started thinking about this yet, so you're in good hands with the Mini 3.
Vor 2 MonateEd Vergara
@Drone Valley I went out yesterday where we had almost full sun for a couple of hours and it was horrible. Trying to get under a shade helps but the glare is so bad it almost becomes useless. Like I said I'm used to my 1200 nits Galaxy 21 Ultra; if you haven't seen that you should try it sometime. I'm not a professional anything with drones but I would like to have something useful when I'm flying. Flying with half baked solutions doesn't help. Since I'm not a pro I'm not gonna go after the Mavic 3 but I would buy the RC Pro if it worked with the Mini 3, the original Air 2, and future Air 2S generation. But knowing DJI they'll keep their market segmentation and keep us buying drones with non interoperable screen-based controllers. I'll bet you the RC Pro doesn't even have the hardware to handle Remote ID so we're gonna be waiting for a new controller that does.
Vor 2 MonateDrone Valley
Ed, I know it's subjective but I've been using the DJI RC controller with the Mini 3 for over 3 months in all types of conditions and I can see it fine most days. If it's a really sunny day, I'll find a bit of shade to help reduce the glare. We can wish all we want that they used a larger / brighter / sharper display in the remote but them folks would be complaining about the price so the design team can't win with these releases. I have hope that they might make the new Smart Controller compatible but I have had this discussion with the DJI team a few times and they are still not convinced that folks buying a $1200 controller will use it to fly a $600 drone. I've explained that a lot of us own larger drones like the Mavic 3 and also fly the Mini series and it would be nice to use a single controller for all of them. If I hear anything changing, I'll post a clip. Thanks for the post.
