DIY Plywood Coffee Table - Herringbone Pattern

  • Am Vor 3 years

    OSO DIYOSO DIY

I made this coffee table with a herringbone pattern and legs highlighting and featuring the plywood layers. I really wanted the endgrain to stand out, so every surface of this table shows off the ply layers.

This coffee table was built as part of the put on by the guys over at the Modern Maker Podcast... Mike, Ben and Chris. The challenge was to build something out of 1 sheet of plywood. I used a 4'x8' three quarter inch sheet of baltic birch plywood.

It was definitely fun to think outside the box a little and be a part of the DIY/maker community. This is my first DE-film video ever so I still have a lot of learning to do.

Thanks for watching and for the comments everyone! Apologies for the bad audio. I threw together this video edit in a few hours to make the deadline for the Rockler Plywood Challenge. I never made a video before and had just downloaded the editing software. Now I know what audio compression/ducking is haha!

Just watched, and the herringbone idea is stunning (and so much work!), however I imagine the legs would break off quite easily considering the direction of ply; I'd have definitely made the ply grain vertical for strength.

Stephen Roche just curious, cause I’m planning on making this, how many strips did you find are necessary for one table?

After a somewhat lengthy built process I finally finished mine. Thanks for the video, it's a really beautiful table! Unfortunately, the top has already started sagging after only one day. Has anyone else run into this issue?

Did you use nails right up to the edges? I worried about damaging my saw blade and wondering how you dealt with that.

is this stronger than having a playwood sheet on top or does glueing makes it more strong??

Great work, but if I'm not mistaken this is phenol-formaldehyde plywood (dark layers of glue ) and this is toxic and not intended for use in interior and furniture, especially with so many opened edges with glue. There is urea - formaldehyde plywood (glue layer is not visible) - not so beautiful appearance , but safe.

I really like the beautiful herringbone design! That was a great idea. You have an interesting mix of tools. Some good quality and some stuff it looks like you bought on a tight budget just to get a project done. Lol. I've done that too and almost always wished I'd spent the money on the good stuff. But you've definitely got the craftsmans mindset to get there. It costs a lot of money to get set up and at 52 I'm still spending money!

Hey, I love this project and I'm really interested in trying something similar. I don't have a table saw, only a track saw. If I made a jig would it be possible to cut the small pieces for the herring gone nearly or would it splinter badly etc? Thanks

Certainly the end result was a visually pleasing table, executed with great patience, hard work and skill. One nagging question I have though is the strength of the angled legs and the angled layers which [ unless I missed a gluing step ] are essentially held together with nails which in use would be subject to longitudinal shear forces.

Does the plywood layer direction put up good with the load? I mean, usually you would use vertical fiber direction for legs. Does the legs not break along the layer like the corner did? Sorry for bad English. Thanks in advance, very good content!
