I have no hate towards Leno; I think he always did at least a fine job as a late nigth host and his part in all this is, while surely not blameless, still forgivable, IMHO.

I’m pretty sure they asked Conan: at that point, it seems that Conan was renewing every year his tbs contract... or at that point he was on the time of renewal... but there are 2 possibilities: Conan didn't want to be in Dave's shadow his entire career, or tbs saw the possibility of loosing Conan, considering that having him gave them a kind of “serious network status”, and went to talk with him and made a better contract.

Add Norm MacDonald into the mix and that's quality content.

NBC really should have had Conan walk out and just never changed anything. Corporate greed, they wanted to keep everyone, but the result was exactly the same, and unfortunately Jay Leno ended up being the evil person. He never wanted to leave to begin with. Jay is a funny person who appeals to most of America, so he still won at the end because his talent and comedy are undeniable, and he has a great personality.

I understand why he went on so much about the NBC fiasco. NBC really screwed him when Carson left the Tonight Show. Even Carson wanted Letterman to be the next TS host. It was kind of shocking when NBC didn’t choose him. Dave was very consistent and creative for so many years.

@Kate Quinn i'm pretty sure they didn't want leno (at least not the big part pf the people), and that is because some people have said that, as bill carter pointed out pn his book, leno used to hide on the closets to listen to the executives and all those things, and i'm pretty sure he heard something that finally gave him some ''extra credits'' to get the job.... and with dave as host, we would probably have conan as host now because i knew that dave wanted to retire years before the time he did. and him as the host of the show, would give the spot to conan, and help him as he did on the late night days... but that never happened :( and we ended up with a REALLY bad host like fallon (besides he seems to be a likable guy, but sucks as host), who end killing the possible worth of the franchise.... if there was some kind of worth on it

@Ariel Gonzalez Carson did let it be known he wanted Letterman to inherit the show. With the power and solid ratings he'd had with his show, I think he assumed his opinion meant something to the network guys... but with him leaving maybe they said, well he's gone, what he wants doesn't matter now, it's what WE want. Why they wanted Leno instead is a mystery !

@Kate Quinn they should have at least ask johnny who he thinks for the job because he made the tonight show what it was at that point (after that the show lost part of the spotlight.... and with Fallon, the show became a worthless brand.
