Learn the meaning of the Constitution and the principles of American government in this new version of Hillsdale's most popular course. Visit hillsdale.edu/con101 to begin your course today.
The form of government prescribed by the Constitution is based on the timeless principles of the Declaration of Independence. These two documents establish the formal and final causes of the United States and make possible the freedom that is the birthright of all Americans.

I know this will sound super weird, but at the end, the sincerity of the Gentleman Professor made me tear up, hoping as well that we restore our country, Constitution and people to the patriotic beauty imagined by our founding fathers. Very rarely do I tear up, but the Constitution, Ol Glory, even a bald eagle flying touches a part of my heart I feel many are missing today. It's sad how far we've veered off the path, but let's hope "being human" also involves the realization that the freedoms we enjoy are because that old piece of parchment which has guided us all down the road to as our founding father so eloquently stated it...a unique entity of its own kind. Thank you Mr. Professor for sharing the absolutely invigorating knowledge to this old patriot's heart. With people like yourself teaching our children perhaps we'll see it restored to full glory as we both hope it will be. God bless you and Hillsdale.

Commenting as a random immigrant, who moved here in tenth grade. I always had a feeling about the great opportunity we were awarded by moving to this country; however, my heart breaks over the fact that I did not get to learn about the founding document until I started dubbing into reading now my personal idols such as Victor Davis Hanson, Williams, Freedman, Thomas Sowell and learning about institutions such as Hoover or colleges like Hillsdale. We waste time teaching nonsense to children in high school all day. We should have as our required teaching of civic education the formation of Union by the States and the key visions that the founders planted in our Constitution. Once I finish my law degree, I hope I can come to Hillsdale and get the experience of what true higher learning really looks like. You guys are jewel in the jazzed up post-modern electronic media phase of this country. Thank you for doing this great educational work.

I never realized the sacrifice of the patriots that founded this country as fully as I have over this past month. As a single man, it didn’t seem too much to lay upon the altar of freedom, but as I contemplate their offerings now as a father I have a new, profound respect. The possible sacrifice of not seeing their kids grow into adulthood or growing old with their spouse. The potential forfeiting of their financial futures and plans. These men must’ve surely been strengthened by God, as I can’t imagine any other way to explain their grit and commitment.
Vor yearTrenton Ghorley
Thats why this is supposed to be the land of the free and home of the brave. Not so brave anymore but we can change that givin the right opportunity. Americans have been spoiled for the last 100 years. Weve piggybacked on our ancestors hard work and forgot what its like to be hungry. The men of old were unbreakable men of great renown so its unrealistic to measure today to those standards but it gives us our goal to aim for.

Bravo. As an Australian who grew up in High School in the 1960’s, we had a forum called The Literary & Debating Society. What this forum did which I was a member of, is give a student a topic to talk about in an uplifting positive way, even if the student did not agree with the ideal of the topic. This gave us a BALANCED view of ALL SIDES of the argument of POINT OF VIEW. We were able to APPRECIATE someone else’s Point Of View, without becoming PARTISAN. We were able to become balanced for the outside World awaiting us. We had a Amazing Human Being in the name of Premier Donald Dunstan Of the State Of South Australia. We had the Don Dunstan Public Speaking Award at our High School. It was the best thing that ever happened in my early Life, as it set me up to be an Optimist and a Patriot Of Freedom. I would love to see this brought back again into our State and College Systems. Great Citizens come from THE POWER OF POSITIVE THINKING linked with Your God Of Compassion & Peace, Happiness & Joy ( the cornerstones Of FREEDOM ).

My child is in 8th grade this year- his history teacher printed out some fake money with his face on it and handed it to the class equally. He then started "taxing" the class on, well, whatever he felt like. Pencil sharpener? Good- if it's not,or not sharpened enough, pay 4 Wilson Bucks Who has their book out, opened to chapter 5? Anyone who doesn't 6 Wilson Bucks to the tax man. Whoever is wearing the color green, pay 2 Wilson bucks. Ect ....my child thought it was fantastic enough to tell me about it.........what he found even more interesting was that some students that lost all their Wilson Bucks...well- their parents (quite a few angry parents) emailed the teacher expressing their anger that their child did not have any more "Wilson Bucks". I, obviously let him know how fantastic I thought that lesson was, while of course simultaneously pondering the "parents" that didn't understand the history lesson. I dunno, i am slightly worried about the next few generations......

Thank you so much for your time and dedication. This is a wonderful course. I wish I had learned this in school. Instead I was taught to be ashamed of the founding of this country and never anything about the documents. That was in the 60's and 70's. They started indoctrination a long time ago. I have always been so proud of our country because of what my parents taught I am saddened to say I was always too busy and I am only now passing this on to my daughter and granddaughter. They need to have a foundation of how great this country is. This country offered a poor single parent family child the ability to become a doctor thru hard work (2-3 jobs while in school) and perseverance. I Praise God for all He has blessed me with and being born in such a great country.

Thank you for the lecture. My notes, - 24:15 "to limit and to empower" at the same time. Its like a "Fence"; to prevent outside to get in, and to prevent insider to go out, at the same time. Like a "Contract", it established "whats not allowed" limit, and "whats allowed" empower. - 30:20 "authorithy spread all over" the why. Because it is to mitigate corruption. Power tendency to corrupt is like Ignite fire in a bush, if it is not managed, controled, it will turned into "wild fire" that burns everything. It is actually not spread in context arbitrary, the spread is to paralleled the source of authority (the governed). So that those who pay the consequence of actions are those who has the rights to make the decision of those actions. It is how to balance authorithy of an individu within a group of individu. 31:15 free speech. Though a speech is not the same with action, but it is expression of direction of intention (will) of an action, yet it is not a guarantee that it can be also an expression of false intention (a lie/ a deceit), but yet it can be used as a verbal contract which if one found to violate it, they can be punished, their speech can be their liability. 32:40 EU, the sea, the mountain, layers of layers, representation of representation, the space between the reprentative (agent) and the represented (client) is widened. The bigger the space the less accountibility can be done. The less accountibility means the one who Ignite the fire in the Bush has less control of the fire, hence the more risk of the fire becomes "wild fire", corrupted, corrupt power, which will consume innocents. (Everyone are created with equal capacity to wield one sword/sovereingty/fate/destiny, no one is created to wield to sword, man is not created to rule over other man. Government was created for the purpose where/when two man or more joined together with the same purpose, and in order to ensure each not violate each other sovereignty they made agreement/contract/rule/laws/constitution) Gin,

I have my flag hanging on my mantel, along with the declaration of independence, as well as the pledge of allegiance to remind my family and I everyday just how rare, special and beautiful this land we call home is. We must protect these lands by any means necessary, not only for the sake of our peoples but the people's around the globe...If our freedom falls the foundation of this great land crumbles, the rest of the world will surely follow, we must protect these sacred documents with our lives. We must resist tyranny wherever it shows its fangs. Stand with your neighbor, fight for him as If he were your kin. Shadowy figures are manipulating our Republic, weakinening our institutions, infiltrating our government, we lose rights one by one, all in the name of "Safety". Our brothers and sisters are being forced to comply, our cities burning while we are expected to sit aside, they tell us we cannot speak, they censor our words, assault us on a whim, but we are expected to stand down while traitors March through our streets waving communist flags, while burning and spitting on our stars and stripes. The radical socialist takeover of our universities and schools are turning our children, our own blood into soft, "Victimized", radical left wing activists, while ignoring the strength of our foe, they are destroying us from the inside and not enough folks seen it before our institutions are becoming nothing more than "Activist Factories" social justice, wokeism, and victimhood have taken the place of free expression, patriotism and critical thinking. The cities want you to believe they know what is right for the country, though they've never left the ivory tower they reside in. Hardworking men, women and children who make this country function get tread upon, called hicks, spit on, and we are treated like fools, when in reality the concrete prisons the Elite, radical government have lived in are nothing but echo chambers, with the same failing policies they've had for half a century. What this country needs is a mutual separation before that last straw is broken. There will come a time, I believe In our lifetimes where we may have to come to an agreement, have an assembly and split this Nation into sectors, let the states make the decisions, and definitely limit federal interference in the process. I see no other way to avoid a conflict. Remember there are some people out there and want nothing more than to see this great expirement fail, don't let them get control, start locally, take back your local precincts, school boards, city councils Mayor's, DA's, prosecutors. Weed out the infestation. If we continue to burn the grass, the snakes will flee.

I devoted a large part of my adult life to defending the Constitution so my love for it comes naturally. It breaks my heart to see us become more unmoored from it with each passing election. This is a brilliant lecture. (@33:54 ) One of the most profound aspects of the Declaration is a short phrase used I believe twice by Jefferson. It is a deceptively simple but hugely profound phrase ‘ ... is, and ought to be...”. This phrase it seems to me gets at the heart of our declaration and of our founding. The United States was declared not by brute force, or not by brute force alone, but by a moral imperative.

I love the history of our nation! It is a testament to God's divine intervention and saving grace. However, so much important history is neglected like what was included in the original draft of the Declaration of Independence, who blocked it & why. Also, the Irish plight, the great men of the South who were the true friends of the slaves, and the real cause of the Civil War and how the Union victory led to the federal reserve. Yet, it is important to start somewhere and I cannot think of a better place to go to for an unbiased lesson on our nation's history than Hillsdale College.

Great presentation. Thank you! Honor the fallen Americans that fought for your modern freedom today. Don't forget the dead that fought for these principles!

As an Englishman, I've long held in high regard US Constitutional arrangements. It's written form (unlike the UK) lays down ideas that have produced one of the most important documents ever penned in western culture politics. Indeed, given the UK parliamentary upheavals of late, I suspect most of the Westminster rabble would do well in listening in to your lectures. Thank you, Sir.

@AtlasandLiberty :: We in the USA are "CITIZENS" of the USA, you in the United Kingdom are "SUBJECTS" of the Crown. Your legislature has a "House of Lords" who inherit their position.

@Phil M The UK should've done better in the 20th century itself. India became an independent country after the UK became a democracy, and its Constitution is commendable. The Indian framers took ideas from the Constitutions of Japan, France, USA, USSR, Weimar Republic and UK, and then modulated it for their own country, thereby creating a written Constitution which is longest in the world. The UK could've taken notes from others too, while framing their own Constitution.

This needs to be taught in every school everywhere. Instead if critical race theory
Vor 9 MonateC. Huseyin
Dude critical race theories is a graduate school class. You need fundamentals of political, moral, and logic philosophy pursed in order to comprehend CRT. Smh
Vor 8 Monatebumbee
@Trenton Ghorley I pulled the race card? That's what the conversation is about dum dum. Also imperialism and racism still affects Africa today and if you were to actually read anything before you made claims you would know that you're incorrect. America was mainly built by and stolen from minorities so I'm not sure how you've come to the conclusion that white people somewhat "earned" their place within the hierarchy. Also your intuition isn't a credible source, especially when compared to peer reviewed studies by those who ackowledge all part of history.

Thank you truly. I never even thought of God as all the branches of government into one. This is what America needs to hear. To step back and to remember or learn what government's real purpose is how our government uses reason and not quick thinking. I will definitely be watching the rest of this course.

In an interesting commentary, "The Culture That Sustains America’s Constitution" published in the July 2, 2018, The Wall Street Journal, Joseph Tartakovsky wrote: "Since 1789 the average life span of national constitutions world-wide has been 19 years, according to scholars at the University of Chicago ( https://www.uchicago.edu/features/20100920_constitution/?mod=article_inline ). Meanwhile, “We the People of the United States” are now well into the third century under our Constitution. We’ve lived under the same written charter longer than any people on earth. We’ve had regular federal elections every two years, uninterrupted even by the Civil War...."

It was pretty good so far, and his last words were what I was thinking. Restore some changes like 13th amendment and the problems caused by the forty- first congress February 21st 1871. A perfect place to start would be the act titled: An act to provide a Government for the District of Columbia. Thanks now I will watch part two

When I read the Declaration of Independence, it brings tears to my eyes. We as americans no wait as human beings would learn a great deal from the words that were written. More so than the Constitution.
