The easiest answer to both stopping being reliant on China, thus reducing their power and also improving the lives of Australians is to take back manufacturing. We used to have reliably Australian made goods that may have been more expensive, but lasted longer and provided a wealth of local jobs. I know most Australians would be fine with one less TV, if it meant job security and money spent staying within the Australian economy.

22:40 *I'm sorry, did I just hear him saying that Australia has only 60.000 active personnel??* How the hell is that possible? Here in Italy we have around 165.500 active personnel and more than 18.000 reserves. I'm a little bit confused to be honest. *But yeah, just to put in context:* NATO has 3.5 millions of active personnel, India has 1,23 millions and it's possible if not probable that other countries will give aid whether it's by giving military personnel, resources or a ground from which the allies would operate (for example japan). So we would have more than 4.73 millions of active personnel (and if other countries would join we would easily reach 5 millions of active personnel). China is at 2.18 millions and Russia (which would probably take China's side) is at a little bit more than 1 million. So they're at a total of 3.2 Basically the allied would have mkre than 1.5 million more of active personnel, and since we are countries all around the world we would be in a much better strategic situation than Russia and China which are both in one single part of the world. And by being a more diverse faction even our collective strategies could be tailored to the situation whereas China and Russia have only two types of mindsets. Also, even if in sure that Chinese special forces are not something to underestimate, the general Chinese soldiers have never seen war.

Very insightful to the minds across the political divide. Very interesting to note the division between various groups vying for prominence within their party, and how they sit on the position of China. Indeed, looking back at the past PM's and Foreign Ministers interviewed, it is interesting that both Mr Abbot and Mr Howard seemed almost apologetic about their past policies during their reign - and it is interesting to note how they seem shocked by the geopolitical events of the last decade - whereas Mr Keating and Mr Carr seem to take the position of "well, they're too big to fight, so roll over and expose the belly". A very interesting observation, noting that both were developed as Labour leaders under Mr Whitlam.

It's funny watching these videos merely months later. It's amazing how so much can change in such a short period of time. China's military as far as hardware as well as structure and tactics has been largely based on Russia's. Seeing not only Russia perform so miserably in Ukraine, but also how well NATO's help and response has been. Has caused China to reconsider it's stance on how it treats western countries. Not a single peep has come out of China regarding Taiwan over the last few months, where previously they wouldn't shut up about reunification. It's beginning to dawn on China that they may have overplayed their hand, and are now trying to figure out the best way to pivot their position without appearing weak. Oh well, it's too late for that. China showed it's true colors, and it's too late to unshow them now. Back to irrelevance and 3rd world status you go China. You had a good run while it lasted.

Pete Blackburn Do not underestimate China. China had learn from the Ukraine War and had prepared for a greater force and also had amassed more weapons. Unlike Ukraine, Taiwan is way smaller than Ukraine by many times. China can wait for a year or two to build up their arsenal for the attack. The CCP will definitely do what they said will do just like what they did to Hongkong. It is only a matter of time. Once they feel confident enough and if they see that US is weak, they will plan their attack.

I completely, irrefutably believe that we have, as a world, more to fear from biological weapons than we do conventional weapons. A country, whether China, Iran, Russia, or another power only need to unleash such a horror on the world and they would dominate uncontested. It's scary! Worse is humankind's underestimation of nature and a bioweapon could very quickly run out of assumed control easily with just a mutation.

Most of the tier 1, 2 and 3 cities in China are way ahead of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, not mentioning Sydney is almost 20 years behind Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen. Leaders in China did not pop out from election, but they were all 'cultivated talents' through dozens of years undergoing a long process of tempering , so that's why the leaders in China indeed have a long term vision for the future comparing to western election system that the leader care short term target only to cater to the voters.

China has a lot of internal problems, the main one being the effects of the one child policy which still affects them today as the aging population makes it extremely difficult for people to want to have more then one child. They are surrounded by enemies, and they're resources and technology have come from trade with the West. They've revealed they're hand too soon thanks to the pandemic, one of the only positive things brought from it. Western countries and the CCP used the chinese workforce as cheap labour, knowing full well that all CCP backed industry in or out of china, has a controlling CCP element in every buisness that deals with china,or is owned overseas. That creates a loss of jobs and industry in all countries that buy chinese made products, because democratic nations have not been able to stay competitive with CCP buisnesses that economically back thier companies,so other companies cant compete unless they use the cheap or enslaved workforce controlled communist dictatorship of the CCP...Thats what made western companies and the CCP rich, and powerful, all at the cost of mortality, greed, power, and influence....that would not have been possible without corruption ,dictatorships and a large slave labour population.Using the entrepreneurs ideas and inventions...that would not have been possible without democracies.

@Nu Rphase China's claims to the south China sea are illegal and invasive. International law says you can claim 12 nautical miles out from the coast. China has been trying to claim all of it, and fortifying it with artificial military island instillations. The "west" aren't the only people in opposition to China's territorial expansions. They essentially have tried to claim waters that are international, and waters sovereign to Vietnam, Brunei, the Philippines, Malaysia, and of course Taiwan. In doing so, they have intentionally threatened all trade, travel, and economic growth for these countries and their partners. China is in the wrong.

Today's China is a product of the continuation of civilization. Many Westerners have been emphasizing that "communism" and the "Chinese Communist Party" make China now aggressive. But the fact is that if China is seen as the continuation of thousands of years of civilization, she has always been very warlike (at least there have been high-intensity wars on this land). If it were not for the Chinese Communist Party, according to the Western democratic method of one person, one vote, Taiwan would have been regained by force a long time ago. The current China and the people are very pragmatic. If China is not as strong as it is now, then China will become a large India. Facing pressure from Russia, Japan, Vietnam (which once threatened to occupy southern China), and Taiwan (yes, Taiwan even threatened to counterattack the mainland before). China is not Singapore. China borders four nuclear countries, India, Pakistan, Russia, and North Korea. Therefore, from a Chinese perspective, most Western media documentaries are superficial and even hypocritical.

It's not just about the strength of a countries armed forces that is a factor. I would say, the most important aspect is the leaders in charge and the support they wield in their own countries. When U.K had the massively stronger military might over China, the U.K. Army & Navy went to war against China twice in the late 1800's, it was the first time a country's army had gone to war on behalf of a privately owned company ..The East India Trading Company. All because China no longer wanted to buy any more opium from them while u.k. wanted Chinese exported stuff but China wanted nothing from the u.k. to import. So getting Chinese people addicted to their opium was to change that imballance. My only small point is ...given the right circumstances, we're all as bad as each other. I disslike all nations with appauling human rights over their own countrymen & lording themselves over other countries because of their military strength allowing them to, inc' those of my own country's past.

The means to stop Damdrews Belt and Road agenda was already in the Constitution. The fact that the parliament (corporatised as it is) saw the need to make a law for their corporatised system to falsely create the impression of power required to cover this situation just clearly shows how much they ignore our Constitutional laws and the Commonwealth of Australia as the real government of Australia. The Australian Government Is registered in the District of Columbia, Washington, DC, US, Corporation ( part of the Vatican..City of London…ACT) as under the control of the New World Order, and has become controlled by offshore entities which is not allowed under the Australian Constitution, the Federal Government, the Formation of the Commonwealth of Australia, the Australian Constitutional Monarchy, or any degree of commonsense which of course has not been demonstrated by Australian leaders for a hundred years.

@aftergodsheart China’s history is not something to crow about. Australia is a big country with it’s own vast share of natural resources, and plenty of commonsense to go with it if we had a proper government that would allow us to develop instead of being sold to the New World Order. We don’t need anything or anyone from outside of our borders to make us survive. Now we just need a government that is as described in our Constitution, and some time to grow our nation again without their interference and misdirections.

Every human on earth wants the same things...safety, love, peace, income, and fulfillment. It is a shame that the human experiment might end because we can't get along. If it comes to that, then we are a failed species. If we don't find a way, we will enter a new Dark Age. I know we could all do better to understand each other. Paul Keating is way out of his area of expertise. The age of the design of the subs doesn't mean that they're obsolete. Electrical and electronic systems are constantly redesigned as new technologies become available. They do this with aircraft avionics, with control systems, etc. I don't know much about sub-building, but the basic design is just the chassis to build upon.

Vor 8 Monate
paul roustan

How can Keating criticize the new Subs, they've haven't been announced what they will be designed around. My guess Australia New Sub will be a SSN-X designed Submarine, which will replace the Virginia, and is based on the new Columbus SSBN, This is the reason why Australia hasn't announced the Submarine design, because it hasn't been announced yet, that it's to replace the Virginia class Submarine.

No - people just don't understand lifecycle of complex systems. It takes a decade to design a new platform and build up any kind of operational experience and another to field it in meaningful updates. Also: well, yeah, the design WILL be half century old. Still, it is likely to be NEWEST design around....

Toothpicks thrown at a mountain or submission? The possibility that a number if countries could inflict damage and encumber Chinese hegemony might buy some time. We in the U.S. must doubletime efforts with tech and resolve to maintain a defense and hopefully some leadership role with the rest of the world. That however is dependent upon U.S. credibility and therein lies the huge deficit of the U.S. on another front, social media and soft power propagandist. The tech gap might be unsurmountable for a decade, perhaps we can stitch together enough partners to offset Chinese capabilities. Resolve or surrender is the choice.

Taiwan's semiconductor factory makes the worlds best semiconductors, and holds over 80% of the world supply . CCP control over that would be disastrous for the world, considering semiconductors power the world economy. SN: Communism didn't make China prosperous, Capitalism did. Capitalism pulled China out of poverty. The only Communist aspect of China is the authoritarian state that commits genocide and oppresses it's own people, and a government like that isn't who we want controlling the world semiconductor supply. If that ideology is the one they want to lean into now rather than the one that saved their country, it will be their destruction. Taiwan should implement their own "2nd amendment" similar to the US, so their population can arm themselves in preparation. #FreeHongKong #IndependentTaiwan

Australia sees itself as the southernmost outpost of Anglo-Saxon hegemony in Asia, an adjunct to the former Anglo British Empire, and the current Anglo American Empire tasked with keeping the most populous Asian, sorry human country, with a thousand-year continual civilization in check, so they do not do things like dominating Asia and places, like the South China sea, but their fellow ethnic white brethren half a world away, does. Will Australia face the reality of the inevitability of a Billion Chinese dominating Asia, or will they fight as they believe the current Anglo American empire will not end, as the previous Anglo British one did? We will all see.

One only has to contemplate the state of the world with the pandemic, with catastrophic storms, the economic crashes. One only has to look at the desire to war, China is more than willing to war, to conquer. North American, Australian, UK does not desire war, no one wants to be drafted to war. Then you contemplate China's past treatment from other countries and how that resentment could lead to conflict. Canada's Chinese Head Tax. The USA's Chinese Exclusion Act. China has been building it's military powers, building it's economic power of ships and chips. And lastly, the physical and intelligent shape of nations. Compare the educational system and the physical training and discipline of China, compared to "fast food" North America and how long, if even possible to get ready to just defend themselves. No country is ready for the Chinese Empire to resound the red horn of doom.

I prefer looking at numbers. Refer to timestamp 22:28 , China has 2 million troops, out of a population of 1.4 Billion. That means each Chinese soldier is protecting 700 Chinese citizens. USA has 1.3 million troops, out of a population of 0.33 Billion. That means 1 US soldier is fighting for 254 US citizens. Australia has 60,000 troops, out of a population of 26 Million. That means 1 Australian soldier is representing 433 Australian citizens. If one were to look beyond all these fear mongering and look into the numbers (which I'm sure no one does over here as most commentators are, for lack of a better term - Captain Righteous), China can't even hold a candle to Australia's military might, much less that of the USA. #truth #hardtruths

to quote Eminem, you only get one shot.... That said, I understand why Australia invested heavily in China, it's a neighbor country. It's why the USA sent lumber to Canada instead of milling our own lumber, or sent auto manufacturing to Mexico, cheaper labor, greater profits for the company, but at a loss of jobs in the country. Companies will be greedy, and don't look out for the country, just their bottom line. Companies should look out for their bottom line, but should look out for their country. So what if the top execs don't make an extra 2mil.. at least their employees are in the country and they're not funding a communist party..... just thoughts.

We have a small but potent strike force. Unable to logistically deploy at the drop of a hat to various locations rapidly (except via air and air logistics are very vulnerable & these targets are high casualty when lost). We also have ZERO civilian defence facilities. This is easily overcome within the next 7 years via a massive interstate underground high speed railroad (using magnet tech or similar for example). This railroad joins the critical corners and cties (Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney, geraldton, Broome, Cairns, Darwin). How is this paid? Dual use private enterprise/civilian heavy tolls. this provides much needed atomic, biological & chemical defence structures for population centres & military and rapid SAFE deployment and more important SAFE REDEPLOYMENT to any threatened area of our borders. We do not need nuclear submarines (although they are nice) to support foreign allied fwd objectives. Next on the list should be missile defence shields (like what India recently purchased off of Russia).

honestly speaking, i mean in term of strategic choices, i dont think china has any choice but to build some kind of buffer between the enemy and their land. this is why i think they building these island .. its kinda bold, they cant have any countries helping them so they build islands hahaha. i mean think about it, if there is war, they will be defending their lands against mostly US military, while war going on, their land will be bombarded while people in US will still be eating pizza in relative peace and harmony so to speak and still able to build war machines peacefully away from the battlezone. so they need that islands cause they cannot get other countries to their side and help them build bases coz these countries are scared of US economic embargo. etc. i mean which countries will not be alarmed if your enemy-to-be in building bases, making war drills etc near your home but hundreds of thousands of miles away from their own country.

Could conflict between China and the West be avoided if the Taiwanese people, for those so inclined, were allowed to migrate on mass to Australia and possibly other countries? After all, Australia needs to grow its population for developmental reasons. I support the One-China policy and recognise that some Taiwanese are happy to accept mainland rule while others are not. For those that are not, they should have the option of leaving Taiwan for Australia, or somewhere else, especially if that will help prevent conflict between China and the West. The US will not defend Taiwan because it supports the One China policy which means it recognises the territory of the former as being an indivisible part of China. This means the US believes that China is not committing an act of aggression against an independent or foreign nation by asserting its authority over the island. So, the question becomes, what chance have the Taiwanese got in a fight against its vastly larger and better-armed neighbour? The outcome is obvious and so it is really a matter of saving as many lives as possible that is the real issue here. That can be achieved by allowing those who do not wish to live under the rule of the Communist Party to leave and become citizens of some other democracy, such as Australia. Upholding Chinese sovereignty does not have to result in a massive loss of life on both sides of the Taiwan Strait in a military conflict that would also result in significant material destruction and environmental damage to both sides, and to any other nations choosing to involve themselves. A peaceful outcome that is in line with the beliefs of the democracies of this world concerning the sanctity of human life can be achieved in a manner consistent with allowing the democratic aspirations of the Taiwanese to live on, all be it, in another country or countries who are similarly committed to the same way of life. There does not have to be armed conflict between the West and China. There is another way to resolve the Taiwanese matter.

LOL First, look at where Taiwan is located. Second, World Domination is PRC's goal. If PRC took Taiwan, next goes Japan, Korea and all the neighboring countries. PRC will be unstoppable then. Even just loosing Taiwan, forget your weapons that relies on high end chips. Taiwan makes 60% of chips and has one of the two foundries which make the most advances ones.

The PRC wants to isolate Taiwan economically by using various coersive tactics to stop people doing business with and in Taiwan. If the Taiwanese economy falters, the people of Taiwan may eventually vote into office leadership who will agree to reunification on PRC terms. Military action is very risky and the PRC would have to fully accept status as the aggressor, which goes against their narrative for some time. Economic action in the long term is their game. Western leaders, both business and political, should make business with Taiwan boom regardless of the pressure from the PRC. Us as individuals should buy Taiwanese when given the option and not support Chinese products as much as possible. We should also not support Western brands that bow to PRC pressure and limit their business with Taiwan. This battle WILL be a moment that our grandchildren look at and wonder why we stood by and watched.

China's rise is intrinsically linked with trade. They are an export oriented country. War isn't good for their country. They have to tow a fine line between asserting their rights over energy and economic resources and adhering to international law. Check their rise through trade and let them get old. 50 years from now they'll have an aged population draining their economy. That nine dash line alongside the belt and road policy is more about survival than projecting power. They don't need Taiwan. They are biding their time with Taiwan and will invade when the time is opportune...when their regional power is so unmatched in comparison to the USA that it would be foolhardy for America to come to Taiwan's aid...which will occur in die time if they keep on at the pace that they are churning out tonnage of naval hardware. I think they'll more readily go to war over the South China Sea resources than Taiwan. If they start extracting oil and natural gas there, they won't let any power interfere or compete with them over the same resources. The status quo in Taiwan will remain until the US cannot feasibly challenge China militarily in naval and air terms.
