China has come a long way since the establishment of the Peoples Republic of China (PRC) in 1949. From a poor agrarian society, it has now emerged as an industrial powerhouse, contributing nearly 30 percent of the world's economic growth. It has even overtaken Japan as the world’s second largest economy and lifted 800 million people out of poverty within just a single generation.
But 70 years on, the Communist Party of China under the leadership of its strongman President Xi Jinping is facing the greatest test of its leadership. The continuing social unrest in Hong Kong, a slowing economy and the escalating trade war with the United States are threatening its undermine his China dream. Can the tremendous progress that China has achieved so far simply falter from now on? Or will China continue to prevail as a force to be reckoned with in spite of all these challenges 70 years after its birth?

I am ethnically Chinese not born in China but this documentary brings a tear to my eye. I remember the poverty that was experienced in the 70's and to see China as it now stands is nothing short of a miracle. A miracle created by the energy of my Chinese brethren. Yes there were mistakes along the way probably many injustices too but the result is inarguable. If not for this result a great many would have perished through poverty and hunger. Somehow I have a feeling that we are only looking at the conclusion of Phase 1 of this China Dream. Think Phase 2 will be even more exciting

A quote from the Three Kingdoms which every Chinese has watched on TV, one of the four major literature classics of China, states: "He who wins the hearts of men will rule the world." The same applies in the 21st century, where the internet makes information dissemination global. My bet is on China because integrity and benevolence (a prequisite Confucian value for any government officials) will always triumph over hypocrisy and aggression as practised by USA. China's foreign policy is win-win. USA's foreign policy is "if you are not with me, then you are against me" A zero sum game mentality. If USA wins, people around the world will get the status quo, a world full of sufferings in many parts of the world. If China wins, there will be peace and harmony around the world, a better world. A global Singapore, so to speak, where people of different cultures and religions can live in a thriving society. USA rules by divide and rule, hence the constant wars and the global humanitarian crisis that follows, caused mainly by the West. China rules by uniting the world, hence the BRI, allowing global cultures to live in harmony. To live and let live. Finally, zero wars, unless of course, the West continues with their military imperialism.

Hard to achieve with democracy. Popular leader has higher chance to win then capable leader. Asian system/traditional system only pick between capable leader vs capable leader to compete. More to selection then election. Wether to be leader of farmers regarding irrigation..leader of village etc. The control system ussualy form between eldery and young generation to discuss and set the goal to be achieve. Experienced/Capable village leader if they good then will be nominated to compete to be distric leader..capable distric leader will be nomimated to compete to be mayor and keep going up to the top leader.

Back in 1992 Francis Fukuyama, an American economist published a book with the very humble title 'The End of History ...', in which he argued that Western Civilization had been so successful that every country in the world had to adopt Western ideas and beliefs if they wished to be prosperous. In fact, in the future all countries were going to be Westernized. In effect, history was over and there was nothing left to write about - the West was victorious and the rest had been annihilated. This is how the West went to sleep and meanwhile on the other side of the ocean, a giant woke up. History did not end but the history of Western domination may very soon come to an end.
Vor 4 yearsrusty rust +53
don't know if fukuyama will be proven but there is nothing wrong in learning ideas from west. that's what westerners are good at: looking for ideas, opportunities and advantage. remember chinese invented gunpowder, india contributed important concepts in mathematics among many other things. Westerners combined them improvised to overpower and plunder china and india among others. Its not a statement of hatred but objective truth. Those that do not learn from others and improvise are doomed. Want to prevent others from rising? Dont let them learn from you. For example some developed countries now accuse china of ip theft on moral arguements but their true fear is that china is learning from them and may rise as a potential rival

Nice documentary. This help me understand China better. I’m from Malaysia. China has traded with Malaysia for 2000 years. In those years, they had been the world’s biggest powers many times. Never once they sent troops to take our land. Admiral Zheng He came to Malacca five times, in gigantic fleets, and a flagship eight times the size of Christopher Columbus’ flagship, Santa Maria. He could have seized Malacca easily, but he did not. In 1511, the Portuguese came. In 1642, the Dutch came. In the 18th century the British came. We were colonised by each, one after another. When China wanted spices from India, they traded with the Indians. When they wanted gems, they traded with the Persian. They didn’t take lands. The only time China expanded beyond their current borders was in Yuan Dynasty, when Genghis and his descendants Ogedei Khan, Guyuk Khan & Kublai Khan concurred China, Mid Asia and Eastern Europe. But Yuan Dynasty, although being based in China, was a part of the Mongolian Empire. Then came the Century of Humiliation. Britain smuggled opium into China to dope the population, a strategy to turn the trade deficit around, after the British could not find enough silver to pay the Qing Dynasty in their tea and porcelain trades. After the opium warehouses were burned down and ports were closed by the Chinese in ordered to curb opium, the British started the Opium War I, which China lost. Hong Kong was forced to be surrendered to the British in a peace talk (Nanjing Treaty). The British owned 90% of the opium market in China, during that time, Queen Victory was the world’s biggest drug baron. The remaining 10% was owned by American merchants from Boston. Many of Boston’s institutions were built with profit from opium. After 12 years of Nanjing Treaty, the West started getting really really greedy. The British wanted the Qing government: 1. To open the borders of China to allow goods coming in and out freely, and tax free. 2. Make opium legal in China. Insane requests, Qing government said no. The British and French, with supports from the US and Russia from behind, started Opium War II with China, which again, China lost. The Anglo-French military raided the Summer Palace, and threatened to burn down the Imperial Palace, the Qing government was forced to pay with ports, free business zones, 300,000 kilograms of silver and Kowloon was taken. Since then, China’s resources flew out freely through these business zones and ports. In the subsequent amendment to the treaties, Chinese people were sold overseas to serve as labor. In 1900, China suffered attacks by the 8-National Alliance(Japan, Russia, Britain, France, USA, Germany, Italy, Austria-Hungary). Innocent Chinese civilians in Peking (Beijing now) were murdered, buildings were destroyed & women were raped. The Imperial Palace was raided, and treasures ended up in museums like the British Museum in London and the Louvre in Paris. In late 1930s China was occupied by the Japanese in WWII. Millions of Chinese died during the occupancy. 300,000 Chinese died in Nanjing Massacre alone. Mao brought China together again from the shambles. There were peace and unity for some time. But Mao’s later reign saw sufferings and deaths from famine and power struggles. Then came Deng Xiao Ping and his infamous “black-cat and white-cat” story. His preference in pragmatism than ideologies has transformed China. This thinking allowed China to evolve all the time to adapt to the actual needs in the country, instead of rigidly bounded to ideologies. It also signified the death of Communism in actually practice in China. The current Socialism+Meritocracy+Market Economy model fits the Chinese like gloves, and it propels the uprise of China. Singapore has a similar model, and has been arguably more successful than Hong Kong, because Hong Kong being gateway to China, was riding on the economic boom in China, while Singapore had no one to gain from. In just 30 years, the CPC have moved 800 millions of people out from poverty. The rate of growth is unprecedented in human history. They have built the biggest mobile network, by far the biggest high speed rail network in the world, and they have become a behemoth in infrastructure. They made a fishing village called Shenzhen into the world’s second largest technological centre after the Silicon Valley. They are growing into a technological power house. It has the most elaborate e-commerce and cashless payment system in the world. They have launched exploration to Mars. The Chinese are living a good life and China has become one of the safest countries in the world. The level of patriotism in the country has reached an unprecedented height. For all of the achievements, the West has nothing good to say about it. China suffers from intense anti-China propagandas from the West. Western Media used the keyword “Communist” to instil fear and hatred towards China. Everything China does is negatively reported. They claimed China used slave labor in making iPhones. The truth was, Apple was the most profitable company in the world, it took most of the profit, leave some to Foxconn (a Taiwanese company) and little to the labor. They claimed China was inhuman with one-child policy. At the same time, they accused China of polluting the earth with its huge population. The fact is the Chinese consume just 30% of energy per capita compared to the US. They claimed China underwent ethnic cleansing in Xinjiang. The fact is China has a policy which priorities ethnic minorities. For a long time, the ethnic minorities were allowed to have two children and the majority Han only allowed one. The minorities are allowed a lower score for university intakes. There are 39,000 mosque in China, and 2100 in the US. China has about 3 times more mosque per muslim than the US. When terrorist attacks happened in Xinjiang, China had two choices: 1. Re-educate the Uighur extremists before they turned terrorists. 2. Let them be, after they launch attacks and killed innocent people, bomb their homes. China chose 1 to solve problem from the root and not to do killing. How the US solve terrorism? Fire missiles from battleships, drop bombs from the sky. During the pandemic, When China took extreme measures to lockdown the people, they were accused of being inhuman. When China recovered swiftly because of the extreme measures, they were accused of lying about the actual numbers. When China’s cases became so low that they could provide medical support to other countries, they were accused of politically motivated. Western Media always have reasons to bash China. Just like any country, there are irresponsible individuals from China which do bad and dirty things, but the China government overall has done very well. But I hear this comment over and over by people from the West: I like Chinese people, but the CPC is evil. What they really want is the Chinese to change the government, because the current one is too good. Fortunately China is not a multi-party democratic country, otherwise the opposition party in China will be supported by notorious NGOs (Non-Government Organization) of the USA, like the NED (National Endowment for Democracy), to topple the ruling party. The US and the British couldn’t crack Mainland China, so they work on Hong Kong. Of all the ex-British colonial countries, only the Hong Kongers were offered BNOs by the British. Because the UK would like the Hong Kongers to think they are British citizens, not Chinese. A divide-and-conquer strategy, which they often used in Color Revolutions around the world. They resort to low dirty tricks like detaining Huawei’s CFO & banning Huawei. They raised a silly trade war which benefits no one. Trade deficit always exist between a developing and a developed country. USA is like a luxury car seller who ask a farmer: why am I always buying your vegetables and you haven’t bought any of my cars? When the Chinese were making socks for the world 30 years ago, the world let it be. But when Chinese started to make high technology products, like Huawei and DJI, it caused red-alert. Because when Western and Japanese products are equal to Chinese in technologies, they could never match the Chinese in prices. First world countries want China to continue in making socks. Instead of stepping up themselves, they want to pull China down. The recent movement by the US against China has a very important background. When Libya, Iran, and China decided to ditch the US dollar in oil trades, Gaddafi’s was killed by the US, Iran was being sanctioned by the US, and now it’s China’s turn. The US has been printing money out of nothing. The only reason why the US Dollar is still widely accepted, is because it’s the only currency which oil is allowed to be traded with. The US has an agreement with Saudi that oil must be traded in US dollar ONLY. Without the petrol-dollar status, the US dollars will sink, and America will fall. Therefore anyone trying to disobey this order will be eliminated. China will soon use a gold-backed crypto-currency, the alarms in the White House go off like mad. China’s achievement has been by hard work. Not buy looting the world. I have deep sympathy for China for all the suffering, but now I feel happy for them. China is not rising, they are going back to where they belong. Good luck China. -C L Zheng He's in Floating City: When China Dominated the Oceans https://youtu.be/t-s1K56UgM0 “Christopher Columbus didn’t discover anything, instead he just got lost” 🤯 wow love that 💗💗 -Tasia Grzenia Christopher Columbus | Native Americans https://youtu.be/fYTXRDtYzYc USA vs China 1980-2030 : Nominal GDP, GDP PPP, Growth Rate & Population https://youtu.be/VvvhvEz5nUE

When the economy is $1T it is comparatively easier to achieve 10% growth annually but if the economy is $14T, a 6.2% growth is indeed impressive. It is like generating the size of the Australia's economy. How many countries can achieve such a feat, CNA? Hence, it is erroneous to say that China's 6.2% growth is the slowest since 2009. Do it in the right perspective, not distorting the facts.

Vor 4 yearsDude Trust Me
It's NOT 'distorting' or 'erroneous' if it's statistically right. It isn't wrong to say it's slowed. That's % and stats for you. The EXPLANATION and CONTEXT is what needs to come after a statistical observation, for it to be a statistical observation with interpretation.
Vor 4 yearsE Tow +4
@Dude Trust Me ...and which year's GDP are they comparing it to the last one or the current one ? So in essence they are distorting it since the annual GDP is dynamic from year to year and it has been increasing ! You can't say a 6.5% for $13T when the following year's GDP is at $15T at 6.2% has slowed ! Wall Street mumbo jumbo at it's best, they like to play the game that India's GDP of $2.5T has a 9-10% growth compare the PRC's at $14T at 6.5% only dummies would fall for that which is basically most North American investors !

Why do people want to decide what is good for China? Let her people decide what they want. A society is built from its historical and cultural traditions and any drastic change will cause upheavals which the people may not be able to cope with. As long as they do not impose their form of governance to others, they should be not reason for the rest of the world to worry about. For the outsiders, we should admire the hard work the Chinese people have undertaken to create what they have to-day. It is obvious that some powers seem unhappy that this billion plus people simply refused to accept what they deemed to be the perfect society where the poor has to remain poor if you do not have the resources to improve yourself. There is no minimum support like "let there be no poverty at $XXX income per year". Yes, if you are not prepared to struggle in the city, stay put in the rural area so that you could at least work in the farm. Such approach may seem unacceptable to some but it permits those unable to compete in the city an option in a lesser competitive scenario. Come 2030, maybe the world would see a different China!

No matter what ideology a society may elect to practice as long as the leadership can provide the necessary opportunities for its people to progress economically. If you are trapped at the bottom of the economic pile with no opportunities to change or progress, all the liberty preached is useless. Words cannot provide one with shelter or fill your stomach. Just ask George Lloyd! Why can't the world leave it to the Chinese people to decide the kind of leadership they want? If at all, if it is so bad, the 1.4 Billion would demand for a change. Ask any average citizen the world over, if their economic future is forever stagnant, would they be able enjoy the kind of prosperity they can expect? At the end of the day, the current privileged and so-called educated of the West has only one agenda: to preserve the status quo through propaganda. The sad thing if many Western educated non-Whites seem to buy this idea wholeheartedly!

Today China is the same. it has a system of Legalism and Confucianism with socialist characteristics. The Chinese people will be forever remember as what it means for a people united by common vision to build a prosperous nation from the loots of extreme poverty to the reigns of wealth—committed to enhancing the human capital of the country! Africa relationship with China shouldn't be based on aid, or protracted loan! African leaders must approach China with the mission to learn, apply lessons and forge win-win partnership! With Africa's huge population dividend, what we need is perhaps leaders with economic vision, and faith in the people. African leaders must start to believe that the solution to Africa's economic miracles is not found in our large Churches or Mosques! We need solid market-based reforms, one-currency, free trade, and investment in Agriculture, and infrastructure!

Yes, Mao disastrous policy caused millions of death in China, but think for a while. The Nationalists had escaped with all the wealth , elites , human capital to Taiwan. US also embargoed China in 1950. That means China had zero foreign capital , lack of economic experts to run the economy well . Only 600 +million poor peasants to support her.The only help came from USSR which severed ties and stopped all aid to China in 1960 due to ideological differences. Thus, Mao had to divert the bulk of the ctries resources to the military industrial complex because USSR ,Taiwan would invade China anytime during those era. Moreover , China heavy military industry was already in progress and could not be given up even though USSR experts or technicians have all left. Thus, light industries such as consumers goods and others had to be sacrificed . Hundred of millions were jobless . People communes were one way to solve this problem.Cultural revolution is another way used by Mao to purge certain party members as well as to drive all these youths away from cities to rural areas to work for the peasants so that social upheavals will not occur in the cities.

Michael Griffiths 6.2 % growth this year and an economy around 28 trillion gdp ppp! China is the largest economy in the world and has the most engineers and scientists . 30,000 miles of high speed rail, 250,000 miles of highways,, belt and road, etc. Your about to get your wish how smart they are! They were the largest economy in the world until 1840 when Europe not wanting competition waged wars on them! The Chinese market is the largest in the world and no one is going to pick the American market of 320 million people over 1.4 billion Chinese simple economics ! And the EU well their market is larger then America's also! The USA market is only 14% of global totals and shrinking by 2024 around 10%! Markets Markets Markets !And by 2030 India will also surpass the American market! And many other smaller markets are growing along with the Russian Market with the most natural resources in the world and the middle of Eurasia belt and road!

Half of China's total economic output is foreign capital income and labor income. A large part of the remaining half of the total output value is the real estate bubble. This is why Premier Li Keqiang said that the monthly income per capita of 600 million people is less than RMB 1,000. China has bought some patented technologies, and almost all core technologies in various industries are in the hands of foreigners.

There is an old saying in China: The world must be united for a long time, and it must be divided for a long time. This means that no empire will never decline. The dynasties of China's thousands of years of unified Confucian culture have only changed in accordance with the historical trend and changed from the empires of Spain, Portugal, France, and the United Kingdom to the United States. Any empire will have a day of decline. You can’t resist when fate arrives.

Many of the chinese citizens during the great famine went to go join the military, because food in the military was not limited. It was because of one person, ONE PERSON, from the Chinese military went home and walked more than 2000 miles to his home from Beijing. He discovered all his family starved to death, and as such, walked back to Beijing to tell his authorities. He saved millions of lives.

Chhotu chutiya Hi : and The Chinese people demand that they do their perfect work in any job, not only fast, but also not afraid of hardship. And the work attitude is serious, and any work has rich experience. For example, the work of making brocade, only Chinese workers can create the most beautiful fabrics, especially the Chinese hand embroidery and hand-carving are perfect masterpieces, because the Chinese are not only hardworking, but also patient and gentle personality, and any job never working With rough . also the man or women their hands are magical.!

After centuries of Western domination and humiliation at Western imperialists, we now have an Asian super power on the global stage. This heralds the beginning of the return of Asia, the world shifting back to its natural state of things before the industrial revolution. Asia got left behind because China got too complacent after 2 centuries of Qing rule and various Indian kingdoms warring at each other. Now China has risen, India is gaining momentum and putting itself back together. Now for the Asia as a whole to come together, set aside our differences, see the bigger picture and march towards co prosperity. Never again we will fall to divide and conquer by outsiders.

@Des Chan You've been reading too much fox news and western media. Explain to me how China has lost. In the past 40 years since economic reforms, China had not a single recession, averaging growth at 9.5%. US recession is coming next year, how does one win trade war by going into recession? Use your brain. Don't tell me you're one of those Taiwanese "I'm not Chinese" degenerates.
Vor 4 yearsDes Chan +1
@Pta trit I dont watch western media...US will not go into recession in 2020.....China is already in recession (if u r aware)....it would be worst next year. In trade war, China has no more bullet to respond to US....US will continue to add pressure....China is just a beating duck !!!

@Fanny Albi We have to ignore some of them. Some may be forced to type that way with control thinking. Reeducation camp can do that to a person where you are taught "not how to think" but "what to think". Even those who realize what they are doing is wrong will have to repeat it because their action is being watched too. which begs the question if Xi is part of the victim who truly believes the party because the way he is taught or knows its darkness but felt there is no salvation to it besides continuing down the dark road.

In matters of the trade wars, China got a great deal and that deal was based on the country being very poor. The Chinese can no longer be seen as poor and so the deal with the United States must change. How ever the deal changes, China will still have a good commercial relationship with the United States. They will still make good money.

After the collapse of the Japanese empire, the communization of China and the division of Korea occurred, and the power balance of Asia was disturbed at once. In particular, Japan had taken a policy of excluding communism since before the war, and although it had beaten the Chinese Communist Party thoroughly, it became a form that allowed China to communize at the same time as the defeat. Right now, the harmful effects are spreading to the world, and it is dyed with dangerous ideas. Was the abandonment of the Japanese army after the war correct? If Japan had not abandoned its army, Korea would have been able to send reinforcements to the Kuomintang against China without division.

When you go under for so long without food, you know what it means to be a poor country. But at the same time, you were free from foreigners in the country. The bounce back will be in the sky and it came later and it was so high that the world is now surprised to find a China that has become strong and powerful and can match any nation on earth. Today the rich world look with envy and jealousy as China becomes rich beyond the imagination and is on the road to become a first world country in 20 years. In a way, Singapore has contributed to this rise of China. It became an example of a country that had no resources but had brains together with hard work and dedication to succeed.
