We know that Ollie Bridgewood is not as good as the pros (despite what he might tell you about dropping a certain Alberto Contador). However, what about if he was racing against a pro on the very cheapest of bikes? We enlisted the help of professional cyclist Rory Townsend to find out!

Ok, new idea for a challenge. The presenters are given £300 to buy/build a bike, be that new, 2nd hand or super cheap specced up, or whatever. Then those bikes are compared to Eurobike and a reasonably expensive new bike to see which is fastest/nicest to ride. Hopefully show people the best way of getting a decent bike on a budget.

@Davie C I bought a specialised secteur for £100 from ebay, I was pleasantly surprised by it. It's a 2011 and had been sat in a garage for most of it's life, even has the original tyres they came with. The tyres will have to go as well as the cassette, chain and RD but that's it, everything else is good and I love the saddle it came with.

@Large Lampard Yeah I agree. People talking about groupsets but wheels and tyres is what they should be looking at first. Nice tyres can make a difference for not a lot of money, I think for the money better wheels trumps groupset by some margin.

i don't know what you saw, but i saw a pro cyclist torturing himself, i have never tasted a super bike worth 10-15k, but i can guarantee you that if you upgrade from a cheap $300 range bike to a 2-3k bike,or used 2-3k bike you will notice a crazy significant difference in the speed and the joy you get out of riding, i felt younger the first time i had a decent bike, there are junk bikes with good riders who pass me here and there but i am having allot more fun, i think they need to make a fitted old bike vs a too big or small super bike

Gearing is always kind of the weak point on cheap bikes I feel. Would be interesting to see what mods you could do on a budget to maybe cut some time for say $100-$200. I got a basic bike for $600 and it’s geared in such a way I could probably climb a wall, but I run out of usable gears on flat ground lol… Ordered a new cassette to hopefully give me more “flat ground range”

I'd like to see this event recreated with a cheap bike that had proper gearing for the course. At first blush, it seems the bike makes a huge difference with Rory coming in 1:30 slower than on his nice bike, but what if you took the cheap bike and just changed the gearing, so he could pedal the downhills? I think that would substantially lower his time.

On paper, this is cheesy content, but that finish where they fist bump after going flat out makes it all worthwhile. Truly. And Rory looked damn fast on that Eurobike. I work in a shop and a guy brought that bike in for repair thinking we would love it. It is a boat anchor. Amazing that Rory could get something like that up to speed.

If we give Rory the gear ratios he needed, even capping the budget at the same crap bike, the result could be very different. But this is entertaining nevertheless.

Shimano Tourney 2x7 and Prowheel 53-39 crankset. From there, drop an 11-34 megarange cassette. So I'd say, it's about a few hundred to do this. But then again, people have actually modded a tourney rear derailleur to do 8 and 9 speed so there's that. And also, keep in mind that a 42t chainring is the small ring in a vintage road bike. They call em "hero" gears.

Rory's biggest problem, as he stated, was lack of top end gearing. He had to spin excessively on the flats and couldn't really apply power on the downhills.

The difference was smaller than I imagined, this video proves my point that you don't need a super lightweight earo bike! You can also get far on a good aluminum bike with some good components! Great Video! Thank you. As for me - never reaching 300W+ - I'm riding an expensvie road bike (medium level) and this is why: it makes things easyer. I do never compare myself with anybody else. It's just that the more power from the legs is brought to the wheels, the easyer and faster is biking. This means more fun. However: the difference between 5000 EUR (my bike, ultegra, carbon) and 15.000 EUR++ wouldn't really increase the daily fun for an amateur. Do we need Di2? I don't think so.... Ultegra is smooth enough if you don't have to compete...

Just a hint for the younger guys: Back in the 70th and 80th riders diagnosed a serious disease of their steel frames as soon as a new model came out: softened frames due to frequent use. This was also very helpful when explaining to your wife why you had to spent once again two or more salaries for a new bike. A softened frame obviously is very dangerous and expensive frames are more resistant to frame softening.

Your friends can buy you a new bike if they care that much. Keep the old reliable bike as long as it makes sense to do so. However, one of the best "new" developments is the widespread availability of disc brakes which are just better. So you may consider upgrading to a new bike just to have those. It's up to you.

What I find most interesting is that they both produced similar power numbers and the crap bike was only 18 seconds slower, most likely due to the crap tires. Personally, if this were my budget and I needed a road bike, I'd prefer something used by one of the major brands. £500-£800 is not a "cheap bike". You only think it is, because cycling is a really serious hobby for you, and you invest in it accordingly. As a result, you've lost touch and aren't really a normal bicycle rider. My bike cost me £40, used. I am not a cyclist - just a guy who likes to get some exercise by riding a bicycle sometimes. My bike is a cheap bike. In Halfords (just checked) they sell bicycles for about £150. It's a no-brainer: many more people are buying £150 bikes than are buying £500-£800 bikes.

That Eurobike was well worth the money if you look at how much content they're squeezing out of it.

I love riding my single speed and occasionally being so in the zone that i can keep up with the real cyclists with the 2k bikes. for me its like rock lee keeping his leg weights on

I started riding on a 27" Univega with gum wall tires... When I was asked if I was a Cat 2 or Cat 3 rider (I didn't know what that meant at the time) the other racers' faces said it all... lol. It's all in the legs. Once I got sew ups, I really loved life! Train heavy, race light.

Chapeau, Rory! You made a sh*t bike go really bloody fast. If the route was any longer, you might have broken space-time. Thanks for also just being a great sport about this and the 20kg test.

Like I always said, good equipment CAN make enough difference to boost anyone a level or two. If you all have the same equipment then that is where skill, ability, and a tiny bit of luck come into play. When I was about 12 years old I was at a closed course watching a university team doing Spring time trials. I had been cycling for about 2 years and had some decent leg strength and stamina from several years of hockey. I was used to my massively heavy touring bike so when the offered to put me on one of theirs (I was just tall enough to fit one with the seat all the way down) I said sure. I have a feeling these college age bikers thought they would leave me behind, but this bike was so light and the gearing made it feel like all my power was going into the road and not just moving the bike forward. I was still right with them in a nice tuck after one lap and at the end of the second was only 3-4 seconds behind. I could tell they were a combination of impressed and pissed off. Their coach yelled for me to keep going, but I was hitting the wall and was spent just being excited that I kept with the team. It was also lots of fun. All that from just changing bikes.

Would have been more fun giving him a MTB with the right gearing, or a 1990s steel road bike. Enjoyed it though, good video!

I’m wondering if stretching the frame to get the rider lower and then adding an aero cowling in the front like that on a super bike (motor) and of course cooling ducts for the rider would make it considerably more aerodynamic and therefore faster

Really enjoyed that. The other point is how much slower would Ollie have been on the cheap bike and also how much faster would the Pro have been on an expensive bike? Ultimately, as an amateur, how much is it worth spending on a bike if just a recreational, albeit keen rider as difficult to quantify value v time

Wow, that was a very entertaining experiment! So if I get the physics right (from my lazy, but nerdy, Sunday ride with the kids biker point of view) the poor quality of the gears made for the most waste of energy... Because the ace biker could not capitalise on the downhill and had to work like hell on the upword slopes ... ?

I'm sure others have mentioned these: - show a graphic showing weight/component difference between the bikes - show what Ollie's best time was on this route on his regular bike (so we know what "amateur" means) - redo the race with Rory chasing Ollie. Chasers might have an advantage.

Personally I feel the same difference from just cleaning and lubing the chain of my cheap bike and topping up the tires. Like if it's not serviced for a while and then it gets topped up it feels like a super smooth ride for the first few months.

Wow - Rory did very well for being on a BSO. :-) I think that BSO has held up for more miles then the manufacturer ever intended it to go & def managed to hold up to far more power then what it was designed for. I'm still interested in seeing a mechanic go over it and assessing it's condition (esp since we know it does need attention given the bar tape and the noises it's starting to make).

Entertaining video! But the contrast in bikes was too extreme to be realistic. I'd be keen to know the difference if Rory was given a well-maintained entry-mid level bike with decent components (e.g. Shimano Tiagra level)

I think if Rory had a more decent bike that the masses would usually go for ( any decent alu frame + 105 groupset) would have still won the race. The bartape dropping and bike computer flying off was funny , not sure if its entertainment purposes lol.

Had a roommate that was training for the Maui race to the top and he had me as the rabbit to catch, my bike was an old beater 10 speed that I'd cleaned up, his was a nice racer, I had to stop at steep corners to get it into lowest gear, he might have given me too much of a headstart as he musta thought I would be an easy catch, but he never passed me, lol.

So really the outcome is with the one of the best riders out there he makes a 2 minute difference on a £300 compared to a £10k bike. Average Joe wouldn't see any difference on any bike. Maybe a few second here or there, but nothing to write home about.

The Eurobike is actually my first road bike, I've pretty much upgraded everything on the bike and the only thing that still remains on the bike is the rear brakes. I'm running Tiagra 11-25T and could keep up with most bikes on flats but struggle on hills. Just wondering if it's because of this bike that weighs 12.5kg that makes me struggle on 10% climb or the cassette set up?

Vor 3 Monate
Global Cycling Network

It is likely the bike weight coupled with the cassette and front chainring size. Or it could be that 10% gradients are just really hard! We hope this helps :)
