Casita DID Give Mirabel A Gift, (Her REAL Powers REVEALED!)

  • Am Vor 4 Monate

As you know if you’ve seen the movie, in the end, though things were happy and looking up for the Madrigal’s. Mirabel, our hero, still seemed to be lacking magic of any sort, which surprised most fans because this is usually not Disney protocol when it comes to endings. At least, not magical happy endings that it. It was particularly surprising because even though Mirabel was the one who basically saved her family and their magic, she was still left without any. Or so it seemed at least. All of her family got their powers restored, and Casita was built anew. And Mirabel with no magic was still, Mirabel with no magic.

But here’s the thing. We actually think Mirabel DID in fact get a gift. And specifically, powers for that matter. And no, we’re not just talking about the gift of family, or the power of friendship, or anything like that, although those are important and amazing things to have. No, we think Casita actually did bless her with an authentic capability that no one else in the family had. And you have to look at some of the hidden clues in the movie in order to understand what magic Mirabel held throughout the movie. And if we are right, it would actually have something to do with the way that ALL of the Madrigal’s got their gifts in the first place, specifically in the creation of the candle with Abuela Alma and her husband Pedro.

I felt that her gift was pretty clear in the movie, she was the only person in the family that had a relationship with Casita, everyone lived there, but she seemed to have more control over it, being able to use Casita as an extension of herself in multiple situations. I felt like she was the next chosen Matriarch.

You are correct and people over-complicate this. Both Abuela and Mirabel have the same super-power; they inspire. Casita is an expression of their power. People miss that Abuela secretly prays for a solution to the fading magic and thus passes the torch to Mirabel. And it's not until Abuela herself accepts the solution that the transition is complete. Bruno's vision was not an undecided future; it was BOTH futures. Abuela's leadership must be broken for Mirabel's to ascend. Others often comment that Casita's extraordinary dying act was to save Mirabel just as she braved cataclysm to save the candle (their symbol of hope)... Pedro's spirit again looking out of the family Madrigal.

Holy this actually makes 10x more sense, if you thank about it, everyone tries to use their power instead of casita to get to the miracle, and mirabel uses casita to make a ladder and it just happens.

Mirabel's gift is controlling the house and everyone's gifts. When she's happy everything is okay but when she's sad the house cracks and their gifts are affected. In the end when she was utterly hopeless, the house crumbled and they all lost their gifts. It all depends on how she feels. She's a gift herself.

I think Mirabel has the same gift as Abuela. I believe when Abuela dies someday, Mirabel will take over the power of controlling or protecting the Casita, making Abuela's room, hers. The Casita chose Mirabel to be the new head of the family after Abuela will pass away from old age.

When she opens the door to the repaired home, it suddenly lights up and glows like the magic gift doors. It seems implied that Mirabel's door wasn't a bedroom, it was to the entire Casita, which reignited her family's powers, without a new candle, thus her gift was always the living source of their power.

Also supporting your connection between Mirabel's outfit and the butterfly on the candle, we see Abuela and Mirabel surrounded by butterflies at the exact moments when Dos Oruguitas changes to Dos Mariposas. Two butterflies - two matriarchs. Mirabel is the next matriarch. Her gift was everything - la Casita, the family, the candle - all of it. She isn't given a room in the house because she is given the entire house, which we see evidenced by her door being the front door at the end of the movie.

Yesss I was thinking the same thing! The first thing I noticed watching the movie at the scene where she doesn’t get a door is that her and the candle have a butterfly on it. I thought maybe she had a connection to the candle, and therefore also having a connection to the house Casita. And the makers of the movie said that the “M” on the door she tried opening as a kid actually stood for Madrigal and not Maribel. She must be connected to the whole family too, which might be why, after she gave the little boy (I forgot his name) a stuffed cat and said he was an animal guy, he got the power to talk to animals. Maybe she controls what powers her family members get, meaning she also has a connection to her whole family. Which might be why her and the whole family are on the front door at the end of the movie.

Pedro was Casita. His spirit took hold of the candle and became Casita, hence his picture falling so dramatically as soon as the house began to crumble. The cracks started when Mirabel, the key, voiced her pain, as the house itself and its spirit of her grandfather were hurt by Mirabel's dismissal, and Abuelas abuse of the gift she was given and how this impacted her loved ones.

@Lunar Dragon is it though think of it this way. say that she is the future caretaker of the house. the house puts her right where she needs to be at the most as she not only cares for the houses but the new additions as well. Take the scene with the boy who gets his power to talk to animals. She was there to inspire and give him the courage to approach his door but before he did he reach out to her and ask her to come with him. She is there to guide and nurture the newborns so that when they come of age they can be ready and full of hope and courage to get their powers.

At the end of the movie my take on it was similar, that Mirabel became the next Abuela and that Casita chose her to lead the family once Abuela passed on. She was given the gift of leadership, which worked so well with her naturally hopeful disposition that there really wasn't a change. Mirabel acts like a leader for the family in how she sees what's wrong and takes charge fixing it. She is the matriarch that Abuela should have been. In the future, when Mirabel nears the end of her days, there will likely be another child who 'doesn't get a gift' but this time they will know what it means.

This is how I perceived it as well. I think when casita breaks and falls apart, Abuela bolts for safety but Mirabel runs and takes possession of the candle. I believe it was at that time that she became the Matriarch, and by her being so casita comes back to life, and her door becomes front and center of the household at the end... but I guess that's my opinion with a little extra detail.

Vor 4 Monate

In the scene where she's going to get her door it shows her touch the candle then wipe her hands on her shirt, giving herself the candle power directly then when she tries the door it doesn't work because she put it on herself already, sort of becoming the candle imo. She IS the candle. The candle went out but she opened the door without it, creating the house again and restoring the magic.

I felt Mirabel’s gift also had to do with her obvious talent, embroidery. She was the thread that kept the family together. Abuelo Pedro was the embodiment of the candle and he burned brightly when the family felt their unity breaking. In the end Pedro became the butterflies when the family found that they could do more when they worked together with or without magic.

@audr-io I think to further proof this theory, remember the part she was singing after Antonio got his gift? That's when she admits she's not fine and saw the cracks for the first time because u can tell she was feeling very low from being excluded in a family photo as important as that. But why didn't the cracks show when she called the others? My theory is probably because she was too shocked that she forgot momentarily about her feelings for a while and instead was more concerned with her families hence it disappeared momentarily.

The foundation of pressure is replaced by love.

Mirabel’s lack of a gift was meant as a wake up call to Abuela. The Miracle was trying to test her by presenting her with a child who lacked a power. Abuela needed to learn to see her family as people and not as tools, so she was given a child who was not useful to her as a tool.

I love this interpretation! This totally makes since to me! My theory on why casita started falling apart during Antonio’s ceremony is that no one should have gotten their gift before they discovered Maribel’s gift. I always get this feeling that when “ Marabelle’s door” Disappeared that perhaps the front door of Casita started to shine because I believe that Maribel’s gift incorporates curbing more connected with the house than most of the people that actually have gifts. Mostly shown in the movie because Abuela and Maribel seem to have more interaction with the house than anyone who has a “gift”. Abuela is also the only other person in the house that doesn’t have a “gift “. I think that Abuela and Marabelle both share a similar gift being the original source of the old magic and new magic that keeps their families magic alive.

The candle came from the lantern that Pedro had brought for light. Somehow, the candle got out of the caccon of the glass, becoming a magic miracle candle. And also, the reason casita crumbled was because she lost hope in the family, just like abuela lost Pedro.

Mirabel's gift was pretty clear even from the start of the movie. She's the next Matriarch. She prepared Antonio for his ceremony like Abuela did for her, at the end of the movie she waves at Casita like Abuela did when Abuela first greeted Casita, her door was the front of the house with her in the middle of the family and she guided each of her family members to better things, therefore, strengthening their characters. She is the gift for sure.

Mirabel was basically the new miracle. Aside from her being able to control Casita, it should be noted that when she confronted Abuela, the miracle responded to her emotions and state of mind. The house began its cracks after Mirabel admits to being unhappy she isn’t gifted, meaning it resonates with her, and as she got older, she had less hope in herself, which made the candle dimmer. Bruno’s prediction was right, she could either feel complete and save the house, or feel destroyed and well, destroy the house. She had 0 hope left when the miracle burnt out.

I love how you've explained it ~ I remember thinking much of the same things, but the way I understood it in my head was; She didn't get any magic, because she IS the magic. But I knew if I tried to say that online, many people wouldn't understand. I think your way explains it much better. For a while - before it was officially debunked - I did think that her glasses, and the colour of them, may have been clues about her "power" and her link to Bruno. That maybe she was also given a gift of "sight" - but in a different way. Not prophecy, but a way of seeing people's "truth". How she got Luisa to tell her about the pressure she felt, and not just that - she understood what Luisa meant. (Little sisters - especially 15 year old little sisters - don't always get it.) She got EVERYONE to talk about Bruno, and once she spoke to him in person, she understood his loneliness and that part of the reason he "left" was to protect her. When she saw his vision with him, she made him look deeper. She also got Isabela to open up, and not only with her true feelings, but with her magic, making Isabela realise that things (and that *she*) didn't need to be perfect, they could just •be•. One of the things that touched me the most, was the two times Abuela and Mirabel talked about how the miracle began. At the beginning, she is telling 5yo Mirabel, and we see it through Mirabel's eyes. As Abuelo Pedro turns to the men chasing them, and is killed - we see him vanish, and Alma sadly reaches out, crying. When Abuela meets Mirabel at the stream, she has not been there since that night, and as she talks about it, again Mirabel "sees" it. But this time, Mirabel sees the absolute anguish young Alma experiences, (the animation in that scene is beautiful, and horrible, and heartbreaking.) The first time was sad, it was a child's understanding But the second showed Mirabel's true comprehension - and her immediate forgiveness, and compassion, because of it. Even though we have been told that the glasses have no bearing on the story - I still think that I was (am) onto something about her character. It's something that will make her a worthy guardian/custodian of the candle, and therefore, of the Encanto.

Vor 21 Tag
Otaku-chan
Otaku-chan

I think the power of magic is fueled not exactly by 'hope', but the desire to protect and sustain a family you love. Pedro's sacrifice and Alma's tears gave rise to the candle, a symbol of the power she needed to keep her family safe. Fast forward a few years and things were not going the way the way the magic would have intended. The family is safe, but doesn't feel united or loved - everyone's under pressure to play their part and not be a disappointment. Bruno is starting to get hate for no reason but expected not to complain and instead somehow find a way to help the community with his visions (he was trying. but it's impossible to change the future even for him) and this manifested in cracks. As an answer to this problem, Mirabel was born. The door not manifesting for Mirabel doesn't actually mean her 'power' was never given. I actually think she had her power from birth. The door disappeared to symbolically show that _it was the wrong door._ Mirabel's 'door' isn't just one room in the house. it's the _whole_ house. If the candle is taken as a symbol of the miracle brought into the world by Alma, the 'candle' or the 'miracle' brought into the world by Mirabel's birth... is Mirabel herself. The candle going out was actually a good thing. It was a sign of Alma deviating from her true feelings of wanting to keep her family protected and loved, as the years went on and she became the controlling Abuela. The moment she realized this, and that she was at fault, the candle's flame burnt out. As for casito, I think their home is a literal manifestation of familial bonds. Casito couldn't help near Bruno's room, because Bruno had become estranged from the family, and his bond with the Madrigal family had grown faint. Abuela and Mirabel, two characters who valued familial bonds the most, also were the ones shown to communicate with Casito the most. As more and more pressure piled onto the family members, familial bonds grew strained. Pepa had to constantly control her feelings. Camilo still didn't know who he really was, but couldn't ever complain. Like Camilo, Dolores' sharp hearing was often just a curse, but she had to cover her ears and deal with it instead of complaining to family, the people she should be the most comfortable with. She also had to hide the fact that Bruno was living in the walls, with rats and eating leftovers, but couldn't do anything to help. Just like this, the stress and secrets and untold feelings piled up, making the family members feel like strangers to each other.... cue cracks in their bonds and casito. When Antonio got his door, it was bigger on the inside. Mirabel's door was different... _it had no inside._ It was the _outside-_ the Casito. Her gift was casito (familial bonds) returning after they rebuilt their house (bonds) themselves, and acknowledged Mirabel with a special doorknob. Abuela's encanto manifested from the outside (houses, mountains, a candle) while Mirabel's encanto manifested within herself. Saying she was never gifted, is the same as saying she was always gifted. At no point in the movie did her 'magic-haver' status change.

I remember reading abt behind the scenes stuff that said children by blood arent the only ones that can get Gifts. Regardless if youre their biological kid or adopted, you still get powers at the age of five as their bond as a family is found within both blood and love. Though, it was left ambiguous as to whether or not said adopted child could still get a Gift if they were adopted past the age of five.

i really thought she was going to get (what we know in encanto as a gift) at the end of my movie, but it turned out it was way more beautiful. Everyone soon found out how important mirabel was even without her personal power. She showed everyone that she is the next caretaker of the casita and the candle.

I always thought that whilst her gift was almost like being chosen by casita, as she’s the only one that can utilise and fully understand and communicate w it, as well as her being the glue that kept the family together, that she was almost meant to be a vessel of sorts. The candle went out in her hands and I saw that as the magic choosing her to hold it until a new casita was built so that it never truly went out. The only one without powers would have enough space to store all of it yk? But reading all the comments about being the next matriarch as well makes a lot of sense! She was a trailblazer and managed to create a brand new system, healing old wounds and creating a better dynamic, seems like she was always meant to lead.

I feel like some people missed the symbolism of the line: “Look at this home We need a new foundation” The old regime of how Abuela ran things had to be torn down to make way for a new way of running the family. I felt like maribel’s gift was to become the new matriarch of the family. She was seen nurturing and helping each family member discover their true worth.

@蘇展緯 That's a really good point, which backs up some of the points in this video about Mirabel being the source of the family's gifts. Did Luisa get weaker because of her self-doubt, or because Mirabel suddenly saw the true pressure she was under? Did Isabel's gift evolve because she was true to herself, or because Mirabel suddenly didn't see her as perfect any more? The cactus pops up right as she confesses to her. Not saying that's right, but it's one way of looking at it and would back up her shaping Antonio's gift.

I was gonna say the exact same thing. She's the most nurturing throughout the film and has the strongest connection to casita, I think she's the only one other than abuela who you see talking to it, and then to have her front and centre of the new door signifies to me that she is the heart of the family, the new matriarch.

I’m glad I’m not the only one that reached this conclusion! While I was watching the movie I came to the same conclusion! What fortified this idea was the ending how the magic just came out of her hand and brought the house to life! She was in a sense a perfect and better vessel. I think she’s going to take on the role of the Abuela once she passes. Of course I’m speaking hypothetically since they aren’t real. I think it’s safe to assume that the candle will need a vessel to keep the magic going at least every other generation. So i guess it’s safe to assume that there will still be more children without powers. I only say this because I don’t think you can have powers, if you’re a vessel for the magic. I mean look at maribel and abuela. Casita could have given her powers and chosen her as a vessel. Yet the fact that it didn’t means that you can’t be both the vessel and have super powers. Perhaps it’s because being the vessel itself like the creator of the yt video suggested is a gift, yet I disagree.

I saw some of this in the movie. Thanks for filling in the blanks. I'd like to add the reason why Mirabel's door dissolved was because unlike the others, her gift was innate, she was born with it. It only came out when she fully accepted her place in the family & the world. Thus, it released the seed of magic back into Casita & the rest of the family. A minor technicality, true, but I feel it greatly adds to the ending.

What I always saw in the movie was that Mirabel was similar to 'Casita', which is why it's shown in the movie how she can communicate with the house more than anyone else seen in the movie. When the house only shows some floorboards move, Mirabel knows exactly what the house means. She may not have gotten a door in her childhood, but I always saw her door as the house itself, which is why the house stopped everyone else from getting the candle but willingly helped Mirabel instead. To further explain on the last point, when everyone else was running towards the candle that was slowly but surely going out when the house was crumbling apart, Mirabel got a perfectly placed ladder to get to the candle, while the rest of the family members actively got pushed back away from the candle itself, this means that Casita was actually trying to help Mirabel instead, as they probably have a special bond together, AKA, Casita could very well be Mirabel's door this entire time. That is also why her door disappeared when she placed her hand on it, the door's energy went into the house itself, making the house Mirabel's room in some sort of way, which is why the main door of the house at the end of the movie had Mirabel and the entire family behind her. The house is Mirabel's gift. But then again, this is only my interpretation of what I think Mirabel's gift could be, I could be wrong.

Literally I told my family after the credits rolled. She didnt need a door because she was the door. It's ok the flame went out because she was the flame. What is magic essentially it is actively creating. She was constantly creating her own path throughout all the ups and downs and it's what draws the townspeople to her. People said she tried so hard to make Abuela happy. But I think that was just her own power at work seeing the wonder in everyone's ability to create. It's even the reason why she is able to forgive Abuela so quickly because she sees what Abuela created through everything she went through. At the beginning of the movie I formed a theory of my own: I thought Abuella was like the life force keeping the casita & the magic alive and that she would at one point pass away and that's why the house was cracking and that Mirabel is going to inherit this role from Abuella and that that's why she didn't have any other 'magical gift' because this was destined to be her role. Obviously I'm glad Abuella didn't pass away.

Vor Monat

I said the same I agree, notice how in the end the candle disappears and never reappear, its because Mirabel became that candle that sustains the home, the family, and everyone powers. notice how when mirabel lost a little hope because of abuela not having hope in her, the candle started to die out the more mirabel was broken and angry, the house fell apart and everyone lost their gifts, but when she had that hope back, abuela giving that hope as well then everything went back to normal, even better. and the butterflies on the candle and on Maribel clothes is so obvious lol. and Maribel didn't get the gift of her being the candle herself (the source of the magic) when she was young because the clothes she wore had a caterpillar on it, it just wasn't her time that's all for her to show this cause its not as obvious as the other gifts, but whos to say she didn't receive it. when she touched the door knob everything disappearing hinted at her gift to me, its cause it couldn't be seen, hope can't be seen you just need to believe and take action, also her being the source of their magic can't be seen as well lol. her gift isn't by sight its by faith. she had it in her all along. its like the saying faith without action is dead.

I fully support this theory, and it also explains why Casita is shown helping Mirabel at a lot of points in the film and not much of others, and also how Mirabel is the first to sense that she is in danger. It also explains why the candle burned brighter while Isabela hugged Mirabel.

@Joseph Akpeti Bruno said the vision was “out of order”. Also, Mirabel reconciling with Isabella is what lead to her altercation with her grandmother and the realization that everyone was hurting from the high expectations Abuela was putting on everyone. Not just Luisa and herself, but even her sister who seemingly had a perfect life from Mirabel’s perspective. Their fractured relationship was a symptom of everything that was tearing the family apart and it had to be repaired for the rest of the events that occurred to work out the way they did. Mirabel thought she was alone in how she felt. Isabel’s confession helped her realize that was far from true.

another theory: the main character is Casita and here's why, from the start when Casita was created Casita blessed children to make the connection with the family stronger but abuela didn't tought so.. she tought blessings are for them to use and make gains from it and so she treated every blessed member of the family with their gifts not who they are thus makes the gift overused and Casita couldn't take this so Casita didn't gave a blessing to mirabel to choose someone who can understands how to be human, how to be yourself not just your blessing. so everyone can use their blessings less and be themselves more also since when Casita was created there was no gift so Casita has to not gift mirabel so she can be the new creator of Casita. note: /broken english

I think giving her a 'power' defeats the purpose of her journey honestly- that regardless of whether she had powers, she was loved and had worth in a family filled with notable characters. Powers are a superlative, not what truly matters because it took someone without them to save everyone. So searching or wanting her to have powers spits in the face of the journey she went through. You're focusing on the glamour, not the substance.

Simpler note: Mirabel was given the gift of mending. Much like how her mother is a healer. Abuela Alma may be the head of of the family but Mirabel is the head of the Household. La Casita only really listens to her. It knows she's the only one who can mend it. Her clothing is the most intricately embroidered of anyone's in the Encanto and so she likely did it herself. She sets the tables and brings supplies and is the only one to make sure the house is running smoothly. She helps her cousin, sisters, uncle, and grandmother overcome their own turmoils that her mother can't fix because there's no injury to heal. La Casita likely didn't give her a door because it already knew there were cracks in the foundation that needed fixing before much more could be done and Mirabel was the only one who could mend them. It's no coincidence that La Casita began to fall apart almost immediately after Antonio was given his gift. Mirabel may be the one to bring hope but only because her gift was that of mending and nobody knew or appreciated it until she was required to use it to help her family. Mirabel's true gift is the gift of mending.

I think Mirabel *is* the candle, at least symbolically. The candle's brightness and the cracks in the casita always mirror Mirabel's state. Also, Antonio receives a gift that matches Mirabel's gift to him (the jaguar stuffed animal and Antonio's jaguar companion). At her ceremony, Mirabel's outfit visually echoes the candle (gold butterflies on a white dress). Abuela says that Pedro sent her Mirabel, and we know that his sacrifice also created the candle. The candle created the mountains, the living casita, and gives the gifts. Mirabel gives Antonio his gift, reshapes the mountains around the encanto, and revives the house and magic. The candle burns out in the climax only when Mirabel is in her lowest emotional state. It even explains why the door disappeared. Casita made the door to prepare for the gift the candle would give Mirabel. Then Mirabel became the candle, which has no room of its own. Being the candle would also require Mirabel to bond with the family members before they received their gifts, so she stays in the nursery. She gave Antonio the jaguar toy and then walked him to the door, and Antonio's gift wound up matching Mirabel's intuition of him perfectly. Also, if Mirabel is the candle and Abuela is the candle's keeper, it makes perfect sense that the magic starts to fail when Abuela begins to mistreat her as a 5-year-old, gets worse when she feels like she isn't part of the family, and completely implode when Abuela yells at her that she caused all of the problems in the family.

@Hello The bricks have butterflies too - they rebuilt the house with those bricks, which would have been hard to make.

Ik Abuela was all like oh hoho the magic is important and some stuff or whatever, but I honestly hate her. Abuela is just the worst. And everyone knows it lol

I think Mirabel is her Granpa, and her Granpas Essence was the candle so therefore she is the candle aswell.

For Antonio receiving his gift, it's been stated that the gifts are extensions of the person's interests and personality. Mirabel understood Antonio because they were close, and so it makes sense that she could predict what his ability would be--he loves animals

@Mistress of Dreams Anything is possible. She might be accepted now but discovering she could do all that could also go to her head. Just imagine all those years thinking she had no gift when in fact she had the greatest gift of all. Some sort of abuse is bound to happen because you are also exploring the borders of your new found gift. What is morally allowed and not. Disney could use it this as a plot and at the end she can give her gift up or learn to be less extreme with it. Make it a second happy ending

I liked the theory that Casita is the spirit of Pedro and he (casita) started to crack when Mirabel and Bruno were being ignored and neglected because they didn't have magic or weren't useful.

I think this is a really good theory and I have seen a video saying that she didn't get a gift because after touching the candle she wiped her hands on the dress she was wearing.

I personally felt like her gift was connection and empathy. Like whenever she's seeing someone for who they are she's going along on the ride in their "Music Videos". With Isabella she starts out disconnected and can't keep up with her at first until she sees her truly and then she's with her all the way!
