Carnival Scam Science (and how to WIN)

    Prepare to drop some knowledge next time you visit the carnival.
    I collected data at the carnival for a full day. Then I used that information to figure out which games are the biggest scams using science to analyze them and show you how to beat them. I also figured out how much the carnival actually pays for the prizes so even if you win, you lose. And then I visited the carnival with my professional baseball playing buddy to dominate all the games. It worked well.
    I started a company called CrunchLabs where we build a toy together and then I teach you all the juicy physics for how it works. So if you want to learn to think like an engineer and have really fun time doing it, check out the current promotion where you get 2 FREE boxes at crunchlabs.com
    You should also go subscribe to the CrunchLabs DE-film channel cause we’ve got some bangers in the pipeline- / crunchlabs

I didn't tell them before hand I was a pitcher who threw an amazing knuckleball. Needless to say after I missed my first throw and realized the pattern, things didn't go the way the carnie expected. The sad part is that they charge like 3-5 bucks per play and the prizes they give out are worth pennies usually. They don't have to make it impossible. One carnival I went to had balloons on a wall with prizes in them and you threw darts. It was very easy to hit the balloons, in fact it was almost impossible to miss them. Yea most of the balloons just had small prizes on them, but at least that one felt fair.

The key to ring toss is to throw two rings stacked on one another. The first ring hits the bottle and then hits the second ring stacked on top and the first ring will stay on the bottle. This is why the rules state "you can only throw one ring at a time"

Vor year
@littlegandhi1199
@littlegandhi1199

Don't you think if you had some major spin on your ring that it would be more likely to stay on? Because physix? Just a theory. Greater friction and maybe some kind of torque.

Vor year
@KuroroSama42
@KuroroSama42

@@littlegandhi1199 I don't think so. The extra spin is just extra force the one side hits the bottle with and extra bounce back it'll fly off with. Also, the spin means you have a smaller chance for it to fall squarely around the rim. ... actually, that's for a flipping spin. It occurs you might mean making the ring spin along it's surface. In that case, I think the spin would turn a win into a loss. The ring will hit squarely onto the bottle, then the spin will make it twirl and the centrifugal force would make it want to keep moving... and since it can't go down, it'll go up and off the bottle. I think the best bet is to throw the ring flat and completely devoid of rotation.

Interestingly, out of the 3 near impossible games, I've either been really lucky or know a secret to the ring bottle toss that allows me to win every time in less than 30 tries: Most people throw the rings like a frisbee which allow the gyroscopic effect needed to keep the ring level and flat to maintain the area needed to fit around the top of the bottle. But, in order to maintain the accuracy needed to make it fall around the top of the bottle, one needs a toss that combines the gyroscopic effect while taking advantage of the angle of approach in order to maximize their probability. This requires a toss where the focus of momentum is not geared towards the forward motion needed to reach the bottle, but rather one centered on moving upwards at a higher angle so that the predictability of where it falls is how you aim rather than trying to throw it forward and aiming where it lands in relation to the bottle top.

I managed to get across the ladder multiple times after studying how others kept failing. Basically, the first time, I purposefully flipped it and then just climbed regularly upside down. After it was concluded I had cheated, I went again and spread myself out. Again, I reached the end but had flipped in the last few rungs and my win was invalidated. So I straddled the ladder and raced the person next to me. I won and it was finally counted.

Many decades ago, I heard that with the ladder climb, what you want to do is to lay down on the ladder, with your feet at the start, and extend your body as far as you can, and center yourself on the ladder. Then extend out your legs wide to act as balance. Then, reach up with both hands at the same time to grab the ladder, and then you pull yourself upward with both hands at the same time while leaving your legs extended for balance. Guess what? It worked. And for a few years, I had a great time with my dates. Eventually, the rules were changed so that your were mandated to use both your arms and legs to crawl up. Cheating bastards.

I think majority of us (mostly adults) understand the odds are against us and that there's manipulation on the games, as well as being aware the games are profiting even after a win. I think we just ignore it because we just wanna have fun, pass time, and create memories with loved ones, family, and friends.

Thank you for that! -The guy that lost of of his money at the carnival should have just bought a xbox kinect for much less than $1K. He most definitely had an addictive personality. Something he should watch out for in other aspects of his life. That money could have gone to something he whole family could have benefited from, like a downpayment on a house (the beginning of one, anyway), a car, a vacation. Or something for later like a college fund for the toddler in that stroller.

Ten shots and ten hits. Even the booth owner was a bit surprised. And so this guy rolled away with a teddy bear. I imagine him as a retired sniper and he just wasnt used to BB guns.

I live close to a beach and pier and there's lots of those games. They used to have the ladder one. It was called 'The Loopy Ladder' the young guy that ran the stall for a few years could walk up and down the ladder no problem. He would do it all the time and people would see him doing it so easily and think they'd be able to do it too. He would offer to help out by holding the ladder steady for people. When the person got about a third of the way up, he would let go, but as he let go he would would ever so slightly jerk the ladder over to one side so the person trying would fall as soon as he let go. My brother used to work on the dodgems next to the 'Loopy Ladder' and he was friends with the dude who ran the stall. My brother was never able to do it though, even though he practised many times.

The education system is broken this is a perfect example. In fact some people learn better by teaching themselves rather than learning off another individual. It depends on the brain, however it's why this guy is so much better at explaining these concepts because he is not focused on any particular subject but the world as a whole. It makes a huge difference. It's surprising cause engineering grads should have recognized this over 20 years ago and somehow the courses have only been changing to be more hands on. Schoolhouses from the 1800s and before actually offered better education than today's systems, however to a degree. There are benefits and disadvantages to both sides however the idea of learning at own pace to get all details is an important detail the universities should adopt but also all other levels of education. The more it's talked about the faster change might occur but your response is a perfect example of what all engineering students experience. At least it more noticeable for us and probably any med students.

I worked a couple booths as a kid in grade school on the weekend, not the front end but the grunt stuff. A couple scams, Fist on the bottle knock down, the bottom metal bottles were filled with cement and very heavy, the top bottle/s were empty so they fell easy. We had to make sure to stack the heavies on the bottom each time. Of course the customer had no idea that that bottom bottles were full of cement. and on the balloon/dart pop board, the darts are usually a little dulled and tha baloons not blown up tight, they are always more like half way blown up so hard to puncture and pop so you get more deflections.

Here is a tip for the ladder climb. Basically, you climb, then you flip over with you back facing to the ground like you usually would do on the ladder. Then, you manage to not completely get flipped over and hook your legs around the bars and hold on with you hands while still flipped over and you unhook your legs, and start climbing upside down. Easy! (I've tested this and it works perfectly. You just have to hold on.)
