So he is actually referred to as "Captain James Hook" in the play, but it's strongly implied that he was born Israel Hands, who was famously Blackbeard's first mate and who has a role in Treasure Island as well. There's a bit in Peter Pan about how a crew member named "Barbecue" feared him, which is a reference to one of Long John Silver's nicknames in Treasure Island. I suppose he couldn't call himself "Hands" anymore from having just one.

It depends on the origin story. I've never actually read the first actual Peter Pan, but in one his name is something like Jonathan Smith, and he's a cabin boy for Blackbeard. While in another, his name is (? Maybe Israel?) Hans, and he was the ship's cook. And in Pan, he was just another kid that was kidnapped by Blackbeard's crew lol

The funny thing is… “One Eyed Pete” probably has both eyes, since iirc seamen wore eyepatches in order to keep one eye adjusted to darkness, that way when going below deck they don’t have to wait for their eyes to adjust, they just switch the eye the eyepatch is on and keep going Edit: Apparently I did not remember correctly.

That's called ostensible myth creation. A seemingly believable explanation for a common occurrence that is actually a lie. Like the Bible. A funny one i heard was cannonballs were held on brass racks called "monkeys" that contracted in the extreme cold and the cannonballs would fall off - hence the phrase "cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey"

​@wZem yeah, there's really no historical evidence that any Pirates, privateers, or sailors back then did that. I think people say this as fact because mythbusters "confirmed" it, when in reality they just proved that wearing an eye patch makes one of your eyes adjust to the dark.
