They found a scratch on the patient's finger that could have let in the leptospirosis. They found rats in the basement that tested positive for leptospirosis and they started treating the patient for it. The patient soon began to exhibit voluntary movement again. He eventually started speaking again.

Worst part is at the beginning of the episode, the doctor that found him didn't do any kind of thorough inspection to make sure there was something wrong. He fully planned to use him for organs. And had it not been for House literally ripping himself off his own ER bed to look at the guy, he would've been completely conscious, watching each of his organs get ripped out right in front of his eyes, completely unable to scream. Malpractice at its finest and it's all too common.

I told my family for years this was my biggest fear, being locked in and unable to communicate I was in pain... Then I fell into a coma and woke up completely paralyzed except I could move a lil bit of my face. They tried all sorts of things to communicate with me including a computer reading my eye movements. They kept saying I was a vegetable but my husband stuck up for me saying No she's not! She's def in there, he even said if after 20yrs of marriage my wife couldn't communicate with me with just her eyes we'd be doing something wrong. This was the most horrific time of my life, almost! I went into this at the end of 2019,so I woke up with 5 amputations in the beginning of Covid! It was like a fucked up movie! It was a non stop struggle, my body kept trying to die in some very weird ways, when I see those doctors or nurses now they are absolutely stunned that I lived! Anyway the moral is that locked in syndrome is a horrific sounding disease because it is absolutely horrific!! ... Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk lol
Vor MonatPhoenixlee
I wish doctors would stop using "brain dead" to mean that the patient has no senses or life left. How horrible. Like being buried alive

@Nichole Shackelton 😮😮😮😮😮 Woman, WOW!! You should get a ghost writer and do a book! I would want to see pictures past and present. I'm sure you know by now that your otherwise horrific experience is a source of inspiration for people you don't even know. I was a Respiratory Therapist for 20 years, and I saw and did a lot of things. By far, the best thing I ever did was listen to my patients stories, and shared my own. Hearing everything you have lived through and overcome is so inspiring for someone like me who has had several chronic diseases my entire life. I've have 2 and 1/2 dozen major surgeries (100's of minor ones) I've had some major miracles happen, have outlived my life expectancy by over 30 years, and here I am in total awe of you. What an incredible soul you have! Thank you for sharing part of your journey here in the comment section of a 'House' clip. I knew there was a reason I started reading. I usually go to the comments for comic relief... people can be so funny. Instead, I am counting my blessings, while saying a prayer of good fortune for you. This is quite a story that more people need to know. Too bad Oprah isn't doing her show anymore, YOU would be an amazing guest for her show. You are a miracle! 🙏 ❤

@Gam gam Da best Wow! I didn't realize that could happen from a car accident! I broke my back in my early 20s and had a bunch of effed up things happen because of it and I went through the same thing with Drs missing things, but it wasn't because I had a lawyer, it was because I was on pain management! The second the realized I was on opiates they all write you off as a drug seeker! I walked around with a broken rib puncturing my lung, the lung collapses and I had a literal heart attack at 27yrs old from the pain, but I walked around with it for almost 7vweeks because I was terrified of them thinking I was faking pain for pain meds! Also that's really cool to hear someone that has been stuck in their body too! It's the worst! And YES people trying to guess what I wanted and getting it wrong every time was so frustrating that I stopped trying! They thought I was brain dead because of it but my husband said "If she couldn't communicate to me with just her eyes after 20yrs of marriage, we'd be doing something wrong! " Lol and he was right! I was there, fully! I also feel like I have been robbed of time and experiences with my family, I mourn it often actually! My little brother is always going on vacations and with his family and get aways with his wife, I'm so jelous lol I even went with them all to the beach one year cause I was so sick of being left out, and I ended up spending the week alone in the rental house while they all frolicked on the beach and went to 6flags and whatnot! It sucks! When they say you have nothing if you don't have your health they aren't kidding huh?!

I was in an auto accident 12 years ago. Everyone told me to get an attorney… bc I had a head injury and was 8 ways to sunday messed up. So… I did get an attorney and the first thing he said was… do not sign ANYTHING bc I was not fit to make decisions… (you know, like the decision to hire a sleezy attorney). Long story short… bc I had an attorney ALL the medical world ASSUMED I was out for money. When they did their scans n test etc they were LOOKING to disqualify my claim of injury. Because of this, they ALL missed my OBVIOUS problem… my pituitary stem was damaged and could no longer communicate with my adrenal glands. So my body doesn’t make sooo many important chemicals, hormones etc that we need. NINE years went by … I SUFFERED for nine very LONG years where I couldn’t even get out of bed… I watched a documentary one day and realized the person on that show was living MY life. I asked my dr about this being possible… he went back and looked at my films… and it was obvious on all of them. The “medical professionals” were just so determined to prove I was lying.. bc I had an attorney (which they ask every single time you get a test) that they missed what was wrong w me. Damage to the stem is NOT uncommon… but it’s not as common as the things they were so excited to prove I didn’t have. My ENTIRE family lost 9 years of me. I have children and grandchildren… a husband. I could no longer work… my life is FOREVER changed… Being locked inside yourself… and I could not communicate effectively… speech therapy helped… but I still struggle to find words…. There’s nothing more FRUSTRATING than seeing your world going on without you and being unable to communicate your thoughts, feelings and needs. The worse part was having other ppl try to communicate my thoughts FOR me… as if they knew what I wanted to say or how I felt. I wanted to punch them in the face!

Locked-in syndrome is real. It often occurs when the basilar artery gets occluded or blocked off. The basilar artery supplies a large portion of the brain, including most of the brainstem and bilateral cerebellar hemispheres.

My mom was in a nursing home supposedly for two weeks while they tried to figure out if they should implant a morphine pump in her. So they left the pump outside to begin with. She called me and told me she as in alot of pain and that her bed was wet. I had two kids and went over there immediately. THe nurses had not even bothered to check out the pump or anything. There was ahole in her line and all the morphine was dripping onto the sheets under her. Maddening. I had to go over there all the time because the nurses were not doing their job. They eventually killed her by not giving her a breathing treatment at night and the morphine kept her from waking up. The coroner told me there was no way I would ever prove they were responsible. Maddening. She should have been able to come home...

@Davey Joseph RN for 35 years. Brain death is when there are ZERO brain waves on an EEG. In my experience in Ohio, we did 3 EEG's on 3 consecutive days. The EEG was done for at least 30 minutes each time and all 3 of them had to detect NO CEREBRAL activity greater than 2uV. In the presence of sedative drugs, CT brain angiography was the gold standard. However each state medical board has guidelines, and may require more criterion.

@The_Effect_DE There’s an old medical axiom. When you hear of beats think horses, not zebras, the show house was the rare instances when it is a zebra. Every illness was, rare, strange, and difficult to diagnose. I don’t know if it’s true, but I’m told that for organ donors, they do anesthetize the patient just in case. 🤷🏻♂️ That said, it is TV and the accuracy may not be perfect. Apparently, there are some shows where professionals look at them, and cry, and scream at the TV.
Vor MonatThe_Effect_DE
@Neil Kurzman Yeah, the problem with this show is that it makes many people believe normal doctors just don't find their rare self diagnosed illnesses. Also this episode in particular is not exactly an advert for organ donation.

@Archetypical Mind kinda? I don't think awareness is a black and white concept though. The more complex the system's understanding of what it itself is, the more conscious it is. Like, again, an ant is kinda conscious, but not in the way a human is. Human brains are inherently a lot more complex which makes it so that their understanding of themselves are a lot more complex too. Also, i'm not sure if every intelligent system is subjectively conscious, but i think every intelligent system is conscious to a degree dependant on how intelligent it is

@Penguin so you believe that a system will require to reach a threshold of awareness that it itself exists and therefore, attains consciousness ?

Dang...this how my girl communicates with me when I ask her where she wants to eat or what's wrong with her

I know this is a show, and the actual diagnosis is serious, but did bro just make them guess all that for him to say his foot itches like hell? Cuz that's honestly what I got from what's shown in the clip.
Vor MonatRichard Johnson
Does anyone know how this episode ended? Why this foot pain? Did they ask him if he desired to live with LIS or end his life? I’m a retired US MD. Great interest in this. Thank you.

@Luna Eclipse How was his friend there, after the former patient recovered?? XD
Vor MonatCest Sam
It's amazing that the cases in the show are incredibley unlikely but I know of two examples where watching the show wouldve helped, cobalt poisoning and a controversial death in antartica from menthonal overdose

Leptospirosis

As far as I remember (which may not be entiiirely accurate) the foot itchiness meant his liver or some other organ was failing. In the end they found out the locked in syndrome was caused by rat urine from his friends basement entering a cut on his finger and managed to get him functioning again!

being conscience but not being able to move or talk is my nightmare. the other one is dementia. they're both basically being dead but alive at the same time

I love technology especially like this for people who cannot move or even communicate verbally or with their eyes.

Which season and episode is this?

This has happened in real life not only in Hollywood. Amazing.
Vor 19 TageDrey One
this literally happened to a young guitarist named Jason Becker. He was a true prodigy but became totally paralyzed, leaving him wheelchair bound and unable to move or speak. He communicates using eye movements

That is my worst nightmare. Its like being burried alive :(. Absolutely horrific.:(

Could someone give me some context for this short?
Vor MonatJL MetaMix
Honestly wont able to live like that, I would ask them to put me down, then ask in the next, "So was that Gods Plan?"

Mannnn this was the last episode when Kutner wasn't a hallucination... Sad way to get rid of a fan favorite character... On the bright side, Kal Penn did what he wanted to do so there's a silver lining
Vor MonatDoc E
He shot himself but appeared in a hallucination in a later season.

@Shubhangi Sharmayou two haven't seen the show I'm guessing? I can tell you what it means but it's a major spoiler.
