Settle the debate once and for all: Taylor Ham or Pork Roll?

Taylor Ham. My old boss (who’s from Philly) used to argue this with me for so long. If you’re north of Newark and you’re calling it Pork Roll, you’re not just wrong, you’re stupid 😂

Taylor Ham, it got the name porkroll when other companies started making it

@phunkydroid I don't disagree. I will never not call it Pork Roll, but if you came up to me and said "Here, have a Taylor Ham, egg and cheese" I'd graciously accept and dig in.

The second one, "bierock" ,might have spelled that wrong, but coming from nebraska, it's a cabbage burger, or a runza, i.e. a cabbage burger "hot pocket"

I actually know one restaurant you can buy a bierock because I grew up in the town. It's in Buhler, KS. At a restaurant called Lavon's bakery and BBQ. It's actually a wonderful hotspot for local Mennonite cuisine. If you feel like exploring go there. Check the hours though because it's not always open.

The bierock is called a runza in the plains. The best one by far is the swiss mushroom runza. While their get a large crispy crinkle fry with their homemade ranch. Or dont. Because you wont want to leave. Nebraskans dont want you. Hence, "It's not for everyone."

Though one important thing to note as you mentioned the Cornish Pasty. Unlike the others, the pasty was both a meal and a dessert and fairly bigger than the others, you would make two seperate fillings one of meat and potato and a sweet filling usually apples or other fruit. Then the pasty would have pastry to seperate the two fillings and the sweet side of the pasty would be marked usually by sprinkling it with sugar. The reason being they where made for Miners, you would probably spent the majority of the day underground and having a full meal when so deep underground was practically impossible. If you go to Cornwall there are bakerys that still make the traditional version to this very day.

The bierocks make me smile. I grew up with something very similar, out of a Mennonite cookbook. .... Russian Beruchas. We cooked down the cabbage and onions more than here, but same type of beef pocket with cabbage & onions salt & pepper......the recepie didn't have cheese in it but the cheese keeps it from drying out and gives a lot of versatility (from cheese wiz to smoked Gouda or Havarti so many are so good in em) Other than folks from the area we lived in where we bought the cookbook I have never found anyone else who had ever had them......I have been introducing friends to Beruchas my whole life all over Canada 😁😁

You know the way I see the whole Canadian/American thing is that Canadians are Americans too. Like in the days before Canada was officially its own country in 1867, it was made up originally of Loyalists to the British from the American Revolution. In that sense I consider them to be like our long forgotten brothers that went with the other side of the family. So really almost anything Canadian is American too I think.
