Alicia New. As I have said in many other comments on this site and others, this is a beautiful rendition , performed by Jackson and his team mate Bonnie . As it was Bonnie’s concert , I’m sure that Jackson was compliant in whatever she wanted. That being said, this song was sad but at the same time uplifting at the end concerning a young love affair that had simply outgrown itself. The original performance by Jackson was more somber than happy. That I found this song as something being happy and delightful was somewhat disturbing. Not your fault. I’m glad that I got to see it.

I covered this song in my younger days. It is still one of the most beautiful, saddest songs I know. This is one of the top two performances of it that I have heard in some 50 years. Thank you Jackson, for enduring beauty.

My favorite with them is The Times You've Come" from For Everyman. Live tube with them: https://youtu.be/vqhwhSE-yXo They hug when she walks on stage The lines 'Now we're lying here so safe in ruins of our pleasure, laughter marks the place where we have fallen" in my mind thinking of lovers long ago Saw her several times in Rochester, NY area. Once said "Weren't you sitting in same place last year?" Busy taking pics of her

Back when I was a teen in the 70's, liked "my music" but was obsessed with old movies of the 30's and 40's and the big bands and American songbook. I was thrilled when Linda Ronstadt entered her Nelson Riddle phase. Found my way to a movie theater last September to see the documentary on her life, and since then, thanks to YouTube and Alexa, have been revisiting old acquaintances and making them good friends. Enjoying it all, but this ...this...Bonnie Raitt and Jackson Browne, acoustic guitars and a melancholy melody, well, for me, it's the singer-songwriter equivalent of watching Astaire and Rogers trip the light fantastic. Thank you so much for posting.

@ Alicia New. No one seems to understand that this original song was drenched in melancholy over a young love affair that had simply outgrown itself. Listen to the original. It is not happy and upbeat. It is sad. I know that everyone seems to love this version, but it is not true to the song.I hate to say this , as I love both Bonnie and Jackson..

There was a decision made somewhere along the way to depict this song as upbeat and happy rather than the truly sad and melancholy ending of a young love affair that had perhaps had just outgrown itself . If you have not heard the original song written and performed on Jackson's first album , you would not be able to compare it to another sad song in the same concert with Bonnie Raitt and Bruce Hornsby , entitled “I Can’t Make You Love Me”. There was no attempt to change the direction of this song and the performance was true to the song. So what gives? I could speculate , but it would only be speculation based on nothing that I could know.

NO HEAT, but the Grand Marnier kept us from freezing on the way down, the glow of this great concert kept us alive on the way back to the mt's of New Hampshire. Sweet memories

Much unhappy discussion follows regarding the demise of this style of vocal song-writing. Really, things go around in cycles. Something very much like these songs will re-emerge at some stage. Maybe even more beautiful. I think we just love the stories the lyrics tell. These stories are eternal. Love and loss. Regret and sorrow. Just means we are human after all. The guitar parts are fairly common. I think open chords would have transformed the sound. But it is just fine as it is.

I love this song and I love Bonnie and Jackson, but I wish they had played it at a slower tempo and with some other musical aspects that would naturally make it sad ( I'm sure there must be a musical term for that) so that it showed the true sadness and sorrow in this original song. If you slow this song down and listen to the words, they are extraordinary.

Baby stands before an open window Looking so far away He can almost feel the southern winds blow Gently touching his restless day He turns from his window to me Sad smile his apology Sad eyes reaching to the door Daylight loses to another evening Still he spares me the words goodbye Sits alone beside me fighting his feelings Struggles to speak but in the end can only cry Suddenly it's so hard to find The sound of the words to speak his troubled mind So I'm offering these to him as if to be kind There's a train everyday leaving either way There's a world you know There's a way to go I'll soon be leavin', it's just as well This is my opening farewell A child's drawings is left there on the table And a woman's silk is lying on the floor I would keep them here if I were able To lock you safe behind this open door Suddenly it's so clear to me That I'd asked you to see what you may never see Now my kind words find their way back to me There's a train everyday leaving either way There's a world you know Got a way to go I'll soon be leavin' it's just as well This is my opening farewell This is my opening farewell ♡♡♡

I love watching them sing together....BUT this song is a really subtle insight into how a woman ends a relationship, and a man who is self-aware but prideful....it is most definitely NOT how a guy breaks things off. Guys are more like "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover." She steps on what is a brilliant insight, because they are not equivalent. my opinion.
