    HOW TO BUILD A COMPUTER

    1. DON'T BUY THE MOST EXPENSIVE MACHINE.
    2. RESEARCH ACTUAL BENCHMARK DATA
    3. BUY HARDWARE BASED ON YOUR SOFTWARE APPLICATION
    4. More cores doesn't mean it's better for you!

Side note: The fast rendering capability of this new machine actually let me eat dinner with my family on the first night I used it. This is incredibly important to me.

A special thank you to Puget Systems for allowing me to visit and for helping me

They simply understand that they can't milk private users for their money. Enterprise is where it's at for them. Same with CAD software. Slowly you can get CAD for a lot cheaper with a personal license. Adobe still needs to get the memo on this. Kids aren't learning their products anymore, because piracy has gone down a lot. So in a few years they'll have a real problem when people aren't nagging their bosses to get Photoshop or Illustrator.

It's such a weird feeling as an experienced computer tech watching this video (in a good way) that everything they say, is right. They don't bend the truth, their marketing is basically non-existent. This is THE WAY to tailor a PC to the customers'needs. This is how it SHOULD BE done. That's professional quality control. I'm so glad, that after many "arguments" with customers on why did I do it this way or that way, or why I recommend choosing this or that specific component is also beeing confirmed by others in the industry. I'm so glad that this video is out there, so people can see behind the scenes of computer systems engineering. Thank you Smarter Every Day for constantly delivering us this awesome content. And also thank you Puget Systems for doing what you do. Their guides and tests, and publications are really accurate.

It doesn't seem odd to you, as a computer expert that they're spending so much time trying to use NVLink to link 3 to 4 outdated GPUs? Especially when two of those 2080s would do the job better than 3 of those quadros? Benchmarks are all over the internet, some people's entire "thing" is putting together systems to kill benchmarks. To the point that they're using liquid nitrogen to cool their over over overclocked Moba It's neat and there's certainly a place for them. I don't disagree but at the same time, it's all marketing.. They exist for people who have enough money to buy a powerful work PC but don't have the time or feel the need to do the work themselves. They're just cornering the non-gaming market.. For example, for gaming there's Origin, IBuyPower, Alienware, etc.. They're just in a position to be able to have enough stock on hand and enough experience to use test benches to make sure that the brand new highest tier GPUs and CPUs can do what the client needs.

This is such a great video of a great concept being implemented by what seems to be great little big company. As an oracle Database Engineer/Architect/Administrator one of my responsibilities was to spec out services to run the Oracle RDBMS optimally or evening maximally where the client’s nerds could be defined at a high degree of precision. That requires knowing what each piece of hardware can do, what Oracle’s RDBMS can be configured to do, as well as what the data looks like in distribution as well as which parts are accessed most often. By considering all these factors I was able to create systems with proper CPUs, and appropriate I/O bandwidth as well as network bandwidth based on user and system activity. Then during implementation, burn in and testing certain guidelines are applied to the workload as well. Performance tuning critical aspects I apply first are: 1. Do not do work that you don’t have to do. It’s amazing how many systems, through unclear programming specs, do things that have no value to the company mission. 2. Don’t do work now that can be done later when the workload on the system is naturally low. So many users insist on running multi hour reports during the day that they won’t even look at until the next day. Why not run the reports in the night and have it in your desk uthe morning? After applying these two ideas we can start looking for bottle necks and programming changes that can be made to make an Oracle RDBMS supported applications. In many of my earliest cases I was able to return sufficient computer processing that upgrades of hardware or investment in new hardware could be avoided. If building a system from scratch, I would follow many of the same ideas express by these folks. I feel a strong kinship to them and applaud their information disclosure regards benchmarks and their work/best practices ethics. I plan to by my next personal system from them. Destin, Thank you for your work which I have truly enjoyed since your early days being injured walking on Legos to this walk through at Puget Systems. I must say i wish I’d thought about doing what they are doing on a larger scale than my small consultancy. All of you, please keep pressing forward with quality over quantity and remembering that all business is about people. With loving kindness, JTI

Destin...I watched every minute of this video and enjoyed it immensely! Your questions to the Puget Systems guys were great. Keep this type of content coming. Great Work! Oh yeah! I live just a few miles South of you, a few miles outside Birmingham.

It was one of the best 2 hours that wasn't planning on spending on a YouTube video. I grew up tearing apart my family computer and rebuilding it in my teenage in 20 years I built computers for me and everyone else the needed one but it's been about 10 years or so that I haven't built any so it was good to see what is new out there I appreciate the video

This video kept me up yesterday morning and I was subsequently very tired at work. Was looking for a dry video to lull me to sleep. Instead I got this. What a great place to work! Wishing continued success!

This reminds me of my grandfather. He sold IBM computers back in the 60's and as my dad recalls, he would always tell his clients "I don't sell computers, I sell solutions." Puget seems to take that statement to the next level!

Hey sir this video was awesome and informative. Long shot but could you make a video on you using this new computer and editing your footage. It would be so cool to see your behind the scenes. You take us to so many places in your videos, it would be cool to see the amount of work that takes. Thank you for your time.

@1:24:00 Yeah removing the cover affects it a lot. I would suggest you put a conductive piece of paper on the plastic. The paper would change temps which your FLIR could see.... Those simple little colored dots at hobby stores work great.

I love their philosophy, you can either do the research yourself using our data or you can skip the research and get our opinion on what hardware you need, that's awesome.

Love these guys. Must be fun when the big guys send you their latest everything. Great they share work with obvious monetary value that buisness nerds would sqeeze every last cent out of. After google it's so unusual to get anything for really free.

I watched the whole thing. Loved every minute of it. Thanks for taking the time to put stuff like this together for us. I super respect who you are and what you represent. The discipline you exercise in your life is manifest through your children. A perfect example of how you can cultivate joy and provide an environment for growth when rules that are carefully devised with love are enforced by love. You make it look easier than it is. I would support a family man like yourself through patreon, but am tight with my budget while I finish school. In the meantime I'll subscribe and support you by watching your content. Thanks for your example and for the positive influence you leave on the world.

The primary reason to perform 'burn-in' in testing is that failures in semiconductors follow what is known as the 'bathtub curve' as far as failure rates go - you have a high rate of failures early in the device's life, which then drops to a constant low (or zero) rate of failure, which rises again only at end-of-life (EOL) when the part is worn out. You want to run the tests long enough so that you catch the early failures during post-manufacturing testing, so that they don't occur after the customer receives the final product, at which point failure will only occur after enough runtime has accrued that the product is already at the end of its useful life, which in the case of a computer component, can be as long as 10 years or more.

I just recently got into computers. Built my first one a few months ago. But is it normal to do benchmarks with all the hardware out of the casing? Or are the temperature differences minimal? But really looks like a great place to work.
