Holy cow, can't believe that rescue chopper didn't go down. That's a lot of luck that it didn't get the rotor tangled up and destroyed when getting unexpectedly knocked around running into those lines.

It would be good to learn to avoid gender bias in language. (Hard to do) For example "Good to see HIM get the power on in time" could be said as in , "Good to see HER....." Just use gender pronouns at random ,..or "Good to see THEM..." Could be Him or Her. No worries. It is just something that I am starting to tackle in myself.

The Dauphin helicopter in the fog belongs to the Special Air Service, the British Army special forces. It is not a normal procedure, even for military aircrafts, but they were training and these SF pilots often find themselves pushing through the limits, which should only happen to them and them only (but sadly doesn't). They managed it well i think, to keep the aircraft flying as safe as possible.

Yes Sir.. as a Army helicopter pilot first of all we stay out of this kinda situation..how ever if Murphy's law come in to play n if we get stuck in bad weather, first thing is stick with the artificial horizon n rad alt.. Descent to a safe height above known railway lines or roads.. Else over rivers or streams in uncharted territories.. Dats y no matter how sophisticated the helicopter is (wid TAWS or moving map displays) we do continuous map reading n the maps are updated with the landmarks mentioned above.. Happy landings Sir

12:48 – Rotary + fixed wing here. Yes, we absolutely use landmarks and straight line terrain features (rivers, roads, the edges of forests, and even ridgelines) to navigate... In VFR conditions. That was an IFR flight all day every day, and a very stressful one at that having next to zero visibility. Of course, if the crew was flying a rescue mission that changes things. That said, when I was an Army Medevac pilot, we wouldn't/couldn't accept missions outside of our minima because a mission like the one we saw here is suicide, and a dead rescue crew does no good for the victim(s) needing rescuing. Whether or not that specific airframe and the pilots are IFR certified doesn't even matter. If they are, there should have been zero VFR flying, and if they aren't, I'd imagine this was a case of inadvertent IMC and we just witnessed a near miss with death.

As long as the only consequence was controlled loss of a single engine, yes. However, the flight crew would immediately declare an emergency and return to the airport as soon as possible no matter what.

The DHL birdstrike was almost a double engine ingest. The one the guy picked up off the runway hit the opposite side of the aircraft at the same time as the one ingested into the engine. You can see it hit the front of the wing around the engine cowling and bounce off behind the aircraft.

The power line one is an interesting one...if you had the upper body strength you could easily dangle from one conductor and be fine (see when birds do it) but when the two short thats where you'll get the flashover and the line will trip out. Faraday cage effect of the aircraft clearly visibile and thankfully the rescuees were nowhere near ground or metalwork at the time otherwise it could have been even nastier for them.

With this video Captain Joe reminds me how important details are in aviation for a safe landing and how I failed to pay attention. On August 31, 2011 I did my first parachute jump (single). Three days before, the teacher pointed out obstacles in the area on the theoretical training that we students should be aware of when landing with our parachutes. Below that a telephone line was drawn on our maps which was only 300 meters (300 yards) long. I did not pay attention to this matter, because the flight area, inside and outside the landing zone offered so much space that there was a great deal of evasion for a safe landing. I should have! It is normal that on the first flight with a parachute the students drift off while flying in cross winds, that means, they do not steer into the win so that they fly in a straight line, for example at an angle of 90° to the direction of landing. And that's exactly what happened to me. In order to reach the landing zone I turned 90° in a left curve to land safely against the wind. I missed the landing zone and barely the phone line just inches below my feet and landed (safely) on the road. If I had touched the line, the parachute would have collapsed and I would have hit the asphalt of the road full speed from a height of 5 meters (15 feet). This mistake didn't happened to me again, because I learned very quickly to handle wind drift.

The DHL birs strike was THIS close to a double bird strike with potentially catastrophic outcome. Look at engine 2 when the bird hits engine 1, there's another bird hitting the engine frame, luckily bouncing off to the top, not into the intake...

With the 747 hydraulic failure, it now brings up the question of why not have thrust reversers, landing gear doors, and steering, on separate systems? Redundancy is among the most important concepts and goals in aviation design. The doors and steering can be on the same system, but the thrust reversers should be separate systems entirely.

Vor 4 Monate
Matt Ell
Matt Ell

The short answer is the cost. They could build dedicated systems for everything if they wanted to but the plane would cost more to build, maintain, and operate. A failure like that is vanishingly rare and it would be like spending a billion dollars for every plane to reduce the likelihood of a crash by like .00000001%/flight.

Love your vids Captain Joe! I have been involved with Fire suppression aircraft here in Aust. I think my crew still holds an unofficial record for most loads drop on a fire with Dromadiers and Bombadiers. 140+ loads in a 14h period. A big hazrad for them is stringy bark trees have like 6ft "Bark Snakes" that get sucked into the atmosphere by the updrafts caused by major fires. Also there is a myth that i'm not sure about with the Buckets the Choppers use, And that they can create a static charge caused by the rotors. Back to the bombers. It is totally amazing to see from the field a bomber getting elevation boost as they drop their load on the fire. I've seen them use this to get a boost to clear the ridgeline! Awesome to see! Thanks again Joe.

TOGA means Take-off/Go-around. It's basically a setting to get full thrust so you can climb. Yes, the inert engine is heavy, but they can compensate for that by shifting some of the fuel and cargo to the other side.
