Director James Cameron wasn't the only one who relied on technological advances to give Avatar an otherworldly feel. Award-winning film composer James Horner also broke new ground with his compelling soundtrack, relying on Pro Tools|HD and Sibelius to compose the music, orchestrate parts, and sculpt otherworldly sonic textures.

James Horner is and always will be a musical genius. I remember hearing his music first when I was really really young on the Soundtrack of Once Upon A Forest and feeling really sad and sorry for the animals and thinking how much the music made a difference even at that age.

Each 'box' has say 16 inputs for instruments, so having more boxes will enable more microphones/instruments to be plugged in and recording at once. Sorry for the explanation, I'm not very good at it :D
Vor 11 yearsRodrigo Zamora
you will have to get a special Pro Tools HD sound card to plug these in and get it installed in your computer, you only actually plug one in and the rest are chained by ADAT optic fiber cables... the trick to not lag them is to set only one as your "master clock" and the others are only used as extra inputs to plug in more instruments/ microphones... as long as you have a decent computer with plenty of RAM you're good, the idea is that the boxes do all the work so the computer only "writes"

I have previously worked with Pro Tools and I couldn't really get my head around it, then I took a class that worked mainly with Adobe Audition and that was very simple and I thought, hey this is kind of like Pro Tools, I think I'll try to start that back up again, so I went back to Pro Tools and now I'm worse off than I was before hahahaha
Vor 11 yearscomp_m +10
Crying cause I was praying he'd used something easier for my small brain to understand. . . Pro-tools is still tough for me unlike Logic Pro where I am all in with the MIDI. I am a noob of course.
Vor 6 yearsPaul Rankin
Pro tools has a monopoly on recording when it comes to profession studios PERIOD and no one else including Logic etc will ever topple them. In fact when I called the head of Logic and asked them they said Pro Tools owns the market share. Can u make music on anything else yes but if you have 50+ tracks its gonna be mixed and mastered on pro tools.... NOT TO MENTION IT JUST SOUNDS BETTER! If every top music maker uses it I hardly think they are drinking the coolaid!!!
Vor 9 yearsRodrigo Zamora +3
also the 192 stands for the model name and the sample rate in which it records at, which is 192,000 samples per second... think of these samples as pictures, pictures of the audio wave... the more pictures you use to capture the sound wave, the higher the resolution and "true" reproduction of the "real" sound wave that is coming into the box you are gonna get. Saddly CD's quality is compressed to 44,100 samples per second so imagine how much you loose.

@maltcus I second that. I'm a sonar user as well. It just works for my needs. But ultimately you can do more or less the same things in any DAW.

Pro Tools is AMAZING for recording, but currently, the MIDI is meh... Yes you can obviously make good sounds and scores out of it, but other programs that are MIDI focused(obviously of course) like Logic and Ableton are better in that regard... I've used the MIDI in Pro Tools and its a little clunky and limited... Hopefully as they upgrade versions, they improve it... Yes I know MIDI wasn't in Pro Tools from the start, but I'm just saying... If you are wanting a DAW and you are mostly doing electronic instruments, then use Logic or something, but Pro Tools is again, EXCELLENT for pretty much ANY form of audio editing from music making to sound editing.
Vor 9 yearsGredran
Also, I know this was 4 years ago, and the MIDI has improved, but I used it recently and am talking from opinion, just saying
Vor 9 yearsAvid +1
Curious to know if you're running the latest--Pro Tools 11. MIDI for composition in Pro Tools is more powerful than most know. In fact here's a recent tutorial on on of Pro Tools trainers just publish. Have a look: http://www.avidblogs.com/music-quickly-and-accurately-line-up-with-pro-tools-midi-editor/. AK

@Diefordethklok333 No I didn't contradict myself. That's why right off the hop I said more or less. It depends on your needs, but most features are covered in each of the daws. Sure, Pro Tools is better at mixing features, but you can mix features in any of them. My point is if you spend say $400 on Pro Tools, or Cubase, or Sonar, or Logic (depending on the version) regardless of what your goal is, you could pull it off in any of them.
Vor 11 yearsGabriel Rodrick
Can someone explain to me how can protools be better without the 64 bit support?
Vor 11 yearsSwidhelm
@kingtoadius Yeah, I find it funny that in these kinds of promos it's always (without X we couldn't have done it.) In this case, what they did could have been done in just about any DAW. For us home studio guys though, that can't afford Pro Tools HD, anything below that is a waste because of the track limit. Better off with Cubase. Me, I use Sonar.
Vor 11 yearsRediForKing
This are all avid audio interfaces. They allow you to record and have a given number of physical inputs into your DAW. Each of them has as far as I know 16 inputs. But large studios require up to a hundred tracks or even more. In order to have more tracks yo need more interfaces.

@Diefordethklok333 Well any of the decent daws. Sonar, Logic, Cubase, Pro Tools are fairly similar. Obviously though the more money you spend the more feature rich the daw.
Vor 11 yearsDiefordethklok333
@Swidhelm Well when you say something that you mean, and then all of the sudden mean something else, that's what we call contradiction no matter how strategically you tried to phrase your opinion. And NO in the industry it´s NOT the same at all. Sure you might be able to do some of the same things after a fashion but its important to note that time is money and 9 times out of 10 PT can do the deed faster, with more efficiency allowing for more creativity. Leading to a better final result. There.

I have stopped replying negative comments these days, people don't know the difference between Pro Tools and Pro Tools HD. Really not worth my time to explain amateurs what they really don't want to hear, because they don't understand it (few people work in studios with Pro Tools HD racks) The amount of inexperienced people commenting idiotic lines is sad. They only reference to their own thoughts and experience, not the people who actually work with these blockbuster movies everyday.

@Swidhelm You just contradicted yourself so perhaps you should know what your talking about before you make a point. "Its more or less the same" "Well it depends how much you spend". Some DAWS do things others don´t because not all DAWS are made with the same purposes in mind. Cubase is not nearly as equipped for mixing movies like Protools is and I should know, I just finished mixing a feature. I am fluent in Cubase and PT and you couldn't pay me enough money to do the same job in Cubase. Peace
