One of the best movie aircraft designs of all time. As a helicopter engineer these things blew me away, I could believe this is a real aircraft, yet it looks like something we don't have access to today.

If any aircraft designer ever snatched up this design for a real world chopper i really would not be suprised, the design really does seem to work

Looks too heavy and like it doesn’t have enough lift. It may work on low gravity Pandora but not on earth.

@Kam P. ...fair point. But fortunately not the case here. On military VTOL aircraft such as this, the low pressure zone ABOVE the rotors create the lift (suck) to keep it both stable and aloft. James's crew consulted heavily with aerospace engineers on this.

The gas turbines are extremely short though

But I don't there's anything that makes it impossible to have a vehicle like that in the military. Avatar Vehicles are nonetheless very realistic and so fricking cool too.

@Jelle Posthuma I don't know if I fully remember every detail about this conversation, but I think I meant to resolve the original problem of the massive armament and lift, not fix the whole desing. It wasn't the point of my comments. However, the desing surely has more problems and even without them I think it would be hard to make an aircraft like that a viable option.

Imagine a United Nations Army having an entire regiment of these Helicopters... This design can work!

its a great design but i will never understand why it isnt named after something that it actually looks like. call it the lacefly or the dragonfly or something. its definitely got that profile from the front

Lol I'm sure the military will call it something else when they build it. From what i have seen building one of these would surpass all rotor craft currently available. Not the fastest but the most capable rotor craft :-)

Scorpion Gunship > AH-1Cobra, SA-2 Samson > UH-1 Huey as this movie is really Vietnam like so the comparison to a Cobra and Huey is acceptable.
