The most obvious parallel to the Fire Nation's resource extraction policy would be their most notable real-life inspiration, Japan. Who invaded nearby Manchuria in order to have a stable source of food for the rapidly growing population needed to fuel their modern industries.

Compared to the United States as it emerged in the 1790s, yes. Now? The POTUS wields much more power than any monarch in history - the office vests one with supreme command over the military, the NSA (the head of which is directly appointed by the President) is legally allowed to spy on each and every citizen (good luck trying to successfully organize and stage an internal revolt, 😞!), the POTUS can call for emergency powers to be awarded to him in a state of emergency, the definition of which is up to him. He's effectively an elective monarch with nearly absolute power.

The "they didn't have metalbending" bit is wrong, tbh. The Dai Li use metalbent handcuffs (not the morphable rocks that they use to pin people down with, but actual handcuffs) a good 2 or 3 episodes before Toph "discovers" it. Toph made metalbending common knowledge, but it absolutely existed.

I really enjoyed this. You are getting much better at integrating complex social/philosophical and political reasoning into your essay. This was good. I think you forgot how the element of Fire as a cultural ideal is a good metaphor for an expanding and sometimes consuming empire. Jeong Jeong points out that Fire, left alone will breath and grow and spread and destroy everything and he paints the choice of abandoning Fire bending to fight and his military as the same decision. Iroh points out that the elements, embodied in to people and cultures sort of reflect their personality/behaviour and that that if Fire is the element of power then the people of the Fire Nation have the desire and will, to achieve what they want [like fire]". I like in the series how it feels appropriate that the Fire Nation is imperial because they make the point that it is an outworking of how fire works and what people want to do with it. The fire Nation's ambition and culture keeps changing with how they view fire bending. Wan's fire village were the first to leave their Lion Turtle, Zuko's acknowledgement of fire as life giving changes the Monarchies drive to control and consume and the Earthen Fire companies desire and ambition when met and steadied with the the persistent stoic qualities of the Earth, industrialises faster and drives the colonies to rapidly industrialise and become a pillar of the United Republic. I think the layered levels of what fire is like, what fire benders [and bending] are like and how the country works also makes for really satisfying world building.

Nitpick, but at 16:33: As volcanic islands, the Fire Nation represents relatively "new" land compared to the rest of the continent. Their land mass will continue growing as long as volcanic activity persists in the region, and it's highly unlikely that any land bridge connected them, as the islands of the Fire Nation are likely several thousand years younger than the the main continent.

The way the show masterfully balances fiction with non fiction is astounding. While this is a very fictional world with fictional magic systems, The way the one hundred year war was presented is very real. The Fire Nation had a technological and military edge from the start. Going through an industrial revolution made them the most powerful empire in all of human history. The Southern water tribes were basically defeated and only pockets of resistance fighters was all that remind. The Northern water tribes kept themselves isolated from the outside world. The Fire nation wiped out all Air nomad temples. and Leaving the earth kingdoms to fend for themselves. The earth kingdom fought till the very last man but they were ultimately no match for the Fire Nation.

Imperialistic governments are historically leniant when it comes to women's rights,in nazi germany women were allowed to fight in the military and there were even many prominent women in hitler's inner circle, since the fire nation is inspired by the japanese empire in our world,an empire that had female politicians and military officers,it only makes sense why the same goes for the fire nation in the world of the last airbender

While watching this video i had an epiphany. The fire nation committing genocide on the air nomads to kill the avatar is logically flawed. Even if they had succeeded in killing Aang, he would have just been reborn as a water bender and they would have to capture him/her all over again. a much better approach would have been to abduct him and just keep Aang hostage, like Admiral Zhao was going to do.

One thing I really enjoy is how integrated the magic system of bending is in the world building. The fire nation has a near limitless power supply and thus becomes the most technologically advanced. The earth kingdom can have fully working trains and transportation systems without having any of that technology cause they can literary push it using earth bending.

Can you explain why the Northern tribe was always stronger than the southern tribe. That could be a good video though there is something counter intuitive about it since the Southern tribe is significantly less powerful even though they seem to have gender equality. They are also attacked by the fire nation more and even though it makes sense since they are weaker, they are still farther from the fire nation so when Admiral Zhao talked about the difficulty of invading the northern tribe was because of their hard to navigate land, well the southern tribe would be farther away and the ships of the fire nation would have to pass a lot of earth kingdom waters too so you'd think it'd bed just as hard to transport fire nation ships for an invasion.

14:20 Industrialization brings about gender equality. Since in a factory both men and woman are working the same job side by side. Compare that to a farm where the man handles the crops and the woman handles the animals. Where the man is making tools and the woman is making clothing. Where the man is chopping wood and the woman is cooking food.

13:50 Also there is no derision of Azula being a military leader or becoming firelord. They do at times doubt her for her age but never her gender. The fire nation is very much a skill based society where what matters is what you can do and not who you are. Things like belief, race, gender, appearance or anything does not matter. What matters is what you can contribute. So what they scorn is incompetence, disloyalty and laziness.

Maybe the fire nation is so gender equal too is probably because they need the extra manpower. As an island nation its pretty safe to assume that in total population the fire nation has the least amount of citizens. To compensate this they integrate woman equally into society to overcome those short comings. This way the have more people to sustain and grow and fight for the empire.

slavery and colonization. Europe had slave empires in the Americas. When you have tens of millions of people with zero freedom or rights and absolutely no benefit from their economic prosperity it's pretty straight forward to turn that into extra investment in technologies. When you have control over landmasses that are often several times or dozens of times larger than your country (looking at you England) it's really really easy to turn that extra resources into inovation. Coal is abundent in many places as is ore. Technology around metullergy was as or more advanced in many places that were not Europe. Difference is European countries had colonial slave empires. I love the analysis of how magic systems and such sets up the Fire Nation industrial revolution but please please please don't forget that in our world slavery and colonization are a bigger impact on differences in tech development in than access to a particular material =)

“I just noticed 2 plotholes in atla first, ba sing se shouldnt have meant fire nation had a 100% power over earth kingdom,... ” That's just it, the Fire Nation _hadn't_ yet won the war. While the Imperial Army had managed to occupy Ba Sing Se, the central government of the Earth Kingdom (i.e., EK Kuei) had successfully fled the capital beforehand and as a result left the Fire Nation unable to arrange an official surrender; this meant all EK forces remained in arms and the Fire Nation would be unable to exert its control over the continent. There emerged thereafter several EK resistance groups aimed with attacking and sabotaging any established FN bases/outposts, and FN troops stationed in and around the capital were ordered to spread out from Ba Sing Se to deal with the remaining pockets of resistance.

Despite its populace possessing hydrokinetic abilities, the Water Tribes are polar states and so wouldn't have had the resources that could allow them to build and sustain a navy capable of contesting the Fire Nation's naval supremacy. At best, they could help the Earth Kingdom out by smuggling weapons through trade and to help raid outposts on the EK coast occupied by the FN, as the capturing of EK ports would've left the Water Tribes without reliable sources of trade. Fire Lord Azulon, the imperialist douchebag that he was, therefore resolves to raid the SWT and genocide the nation's waterbending population. He could've decided not to do this, to instead end the war by withdrawing his forces and surrendering, but he's an imperialist dumbass.

Great video and analysis, but don't you mean the Straits of Malacca instead of the "Thai Canal" like you mentioned in the video? There's no such thing as a sea-crossing canal called the Thai Canal, if anything, they're just beginning discussions recently, in the past decade, about the possibility of creating a canal across Thailand's thinnest strip of land, called the "Kra Canal". But that project has yet to come to fruition

Not to be that guy, but fuckit! One problem, no the fire nation islands didn’t break off of the earth kingdom and there probably wasn’t a land bridge (maybe given ice ages and sea level changes, we don’t know because that’s not ever touched upon). The reason being is because you said it yourself, it’s a volcanic island chain. Hawaii did not break off of any content, as a volcanic island chain it literally grew out of the ocean. The islands are made up of active volcanos which suggests they all grew out of the ocean individually and there is a fault line running right through them akin to the ring of fire that surrounds the Pacific Ocean, which is constant with the islands being so close to the shores of the earth kingdom. Great video though! Edit The islands being younger land masses and not having land bridges for people to get there only lays further point to why the fire nation is a navel super power, because they have been sailing for a looooooooong time. TLDR Fire nation didn’t split from earth kingdom, they are volcanic islands so they literally grew out of the ocean.

The Sun Warriors also draw influence heavily from Southeast Asian cultures, often more so than Mesoamerican cultures. Westerners are just more familiar with Mesoamerican examples than SE Asian ones. Another addendum to add is that the chain of islands that make up the Fire Nation appear to have been formed more by volcanic hot-sopts, like the islands of Hawaii and others in the Pacific, rather than a broken land bridge. Just more food for thought!

You forgot the part where the Fire Nation, unlike other Nations, USED NON-BENDERS IN WAR. Now, this could be said they did this because they didn't have the numbers for a full on war without the non-benders, but either way the Fire Nation uses them. Other nations, however, did not. In fact the only example (that I know) of non-benders fighting in the 100 year war besides the Fire Nation were Jet's freedom fighters. (Though they were child soldiers and I don't really count them) The earth kingdom didn't use non-benders the same way the Fire Nation did, for instance in Zuko Alone the natural leader is a bender while his guards aren't. I don't know if the father of the boy Zuko helped was a bender, as it's never shown, but still. This use of non-benders created equality between benders and non-benders in the Fire Nation unlike the other Nations. (Maybe the Air Nation, since they were monks, but they're dead so whatever)
