Ava DuVernay is the FIRST black woman to direct a film nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. "If the person who gets to tell the story is always one kind of person, if the dominant images that we see throughout our lifetimes, our mothers’ lifetimes, our grandmothers’ lifetimes, have been dominated by one kind of person, and we take that? We internalize it. We drink it in, as true, as fact."

What a jagged image we use for women who achieve greatly, defining accomplishment in terms of the barrier rather than the triumph. There she is up where the air is thin, where men still outnumber women, but where the altitude is awesome. Our goal with Firsts is for every woman and girl to find someone whose presence in the highest reaches of success says to her that it is safe to climb, come on up, the view is spectacular.

why,, the first black person to do something. why bring something up like skin color. wwhy not just see her as a person who direct movies. and base somme opinion on those .. I could care less about her color or gender.. cant we just look at people As just,, people,,

This is born out of ignorance, plain and simple. Those of you trying to make false equivalencies between blackness and whiteness are operating from a perspective that lacks context on the matter. Context that can be gained either through lived experience or through committed study with an open mind and an open heart. History and race are not topics that can be understood with clean-cut mathematic thinking.

Dont agree with all the Irish giy says but as a black person, even I am fed up hearing blacks emphasizing our blackness as a tool to build our self esteem. How come we're the only people screaming our "blackness" and others are just "people" or much less vocal.about their race. I hate the fact that we feel.good.about something.that makes us look weak.and fragile. We need to.get over ourselves. Now this doesnt stop.the fact.that a first is always.historic.and needs to.be celebrated: the first woman, black, chinese, child, teenager, Italian, Irish personto do something, that needs to be celebrated, SIR. Book of records is made that way. Now good luck to us, my.black people; do not.think I'm hating my own but "screaming I'm.black.and I'm proud"just makes us look more pitiful to other races. Cheers. God help us all.

Lol trust me, if I knew where I was from, I'd be there in a heartbeat. 😂😂😂 I honestly dont care for an apology, and I never asked for one. I dont want your empathy either. Once again, for the third and final time, Im not victimizing myself. As I stated earlier, the very first time I ever responded--this is more of a rejoicing moment for me, as a black woman to see another black woman become successful. Also, you dont know me, so insulting me doesn't prove a point, nor does it phase me. Still all love over here. Take care.
