The irony of this moron! First of all...prior to this segment I doubt he knew jacksquat about Asian Americans...so hold off the condescending tone. Secondly if "Asian American" is overly broad...what is the term "white?"...its an umbrella term that houses alot of different ethnicities. So to claim it's all because of our "white supremacist system" is asinine. But what's to be expected from a liberal loon. And just to point out it's this gaslighting asshats party that has termed Asian Americans as "white adjacent" and wants to limit their admissions into highest halls of education. Dont fall their propaganda. Asian Americans want a system that works off merit because they understand hard work pays off. We need EQUALITY not EQUITY.

The disparity is because of type of immigrants not discrimination. I assume they all face equal discrimination or absence of that. Most Indian and Chinese who reach USA today are from the priveleged part of thier own society. Where as the Burmese and Mongolese its not that difficult and many come as refugees.

It's always jarring to me to hear that India is part of Asia. It's so distinct from East Asia culturally and in how people think of it, but this entire massively-populated area is just lumped in. Like, at LEAST split your "Asia" into quadrants. And the phrase "model minority" is implicitly creepy. Once there's an ideal way for specifically minorities to act, there is some palpable evil going on.

like look at all the poverty in asian countries....I don't understand how you can say that asians are a "culturally meritocratic society" when theres a huge wealth gap among the continent. people act like asians and asian americans are the same, like the ccp represents chinatown, and yet, "asians as successful model minorities" doesn't even hold up in asia itself. the real reason is that americans use the term "model minority" to justify the limitations in immigration quotas, and use us as a prop to fuel the myth of the american dream. "you can only become successful in america, not in those poor countries". the purveyors of this myth fail to realize then, that this directly contradicts the idea of "asian culture" being the sole reason for asian american success. you could argue then, that the reason is a combination of both "asian culture" and the opportunities of the american dream that make the model minority. However, that is also disproven statistically by the success gap between asian american groups as well. the only reason why theres so many "successful asians", is simply because of confirmation bias, and the fact that the immigration quotas, which prioritize young entrepeneurs, from the 1960s have since stayed the exact same.

There were many outrageous and right things said in this vid.Only thing is....racism was there and always be there because....point out differences is in human natoru not only on base of skin but LITERALLY EVERYTHING EVERYDAY... Positive racism IS a thing and if it was only racism to left in society...then it is awesome! Even in my country we have vietnamese and their community is prime example of hard work and success. Starting in used to be closed country...with nothing. Now after decades being one of most prosperous around and our people take them as one of our own and applaud their work ethics and mentality. WTF is wrong with that? They are awesome you hear it? And we love them. So gtfo with your binary american bullsh*t all the time. Life is not 1s and 0s...black and white so don't try to put it like it is all the time in every topic. Dont try to force suicide rate within Asian minority is caused by nice racism of white men. It is mostly caused by tiger parenting (it is a term look it up) of their own culture and this pressure is part of the SAME problem in China, Japan and S.Korea...so quit your narrative. Also to say they don't seek help enough compare to rest of the country. In reality? NOBODY IN WHOLE WORLD can compare to Americans and their psychiatric junkiness. You are slaves of pharma and 75% of antidepressants worldwide are consumed in USA only. This is not something to be proud of or using it as "standart" for any measure. So quit it too... I hate FOX and all the proTrump bullsh*ters...but how can you be so loudly against them when you are doing completly the same for your narratives and bending of reality........just quit it...this topic is strong enough without this antics...

Nice summary of naive, cherry-picked, misleading, and sometimes false Liberal talking points. If you really care about Asian American data then I would suggest the following https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AuYxIAvNmgw although I suspect that most of the simplistic Liberal talk about Asian Americans these days is mainly to support the political power of Liberals rather than promote any genuine concern for understanding Asian Americans. We should raise taxes on grossly overpaid television personalities like John Oliver who are basically saying whatever will increase their ratings regardless of its accuracy or veracity.

I've long been disappointed at the representation of Asian-Americans in film in particular. Most of them are "funny people" or play some level of stereotype - we haven't come that far from Breakfast at Tiffany's in some ways. Example: I thought it would have been awesome if some of the new Star Trek shows featured a strong Asian figure as captain, but instead we got an Asian captain who died almost immediately and then came back as her literal evil twin and a second show starring a reluctant white guy who already played a captain years ago. *facepalm*

Fun fact: Filipino-Americans exist mainly because the United States bought the Philippines for twenty million dollars from Spain. Although there were already a few Filipino men(mostly sailors) who settled in the American continent and married Native Americans because of the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade that lasted for about two hundred and fifty years.

It leaves a really bad taste in the mouth when you hear a celebrity with such a huge platform praising kuchiyama, a person who "admired" Bin Laden and saw him in the same light as revolutionary leaders like Che Guevara. Also adhering to Maoism, an ideology which led to things like the great leap forward and the cultural revolution in China. It's really scary to see people like this glorified like that just because they had a few good views but ignoring the deeply disturbing ones... Otherwise good piece exposing how AAPI people are treated. Just be more careful in the future about who you endorse

Thank you British Jon Oliver for taking up the cause and schooling Americans on the terrible atrocities committed by the country he chose to move to. 🙄 Look I am Korean-American and I have experienced my fare share of racism which has affected my personal and professional life. But, you know what? I do not needlessly whine about it or dwell on it because the good always comes with the bad. I love my country even though I recognize it can improve. I assume that is the case for Jon Oliver too. The difference is I think he thinks videos like this will help change it; I think it will, but in a non-constructive way. Who is the audience for this video? Mostly Asian young people are going to watch this. It strikes an angry tone and encourages young people to blame and self-victimize (my opinion). Look, crummy things have happened here, but crummy things happen everywhere! Yes, you can find congressional documents that are outright racist in intent and language but those were feeble efforts of weak minded scared men to self protect from things they did not know, and they did not stop the progress. Why do I love America? The way I look at it, the world shows that humans are impulsively tribal. We want to hord things for ourselves and those we consider our tribe. The general direction of the last 1000 years or so has been the trend of expanding our definition of who our tribe is. It went from being our immediate kinsmen, to our tribe, to our city state, to our ethnicity (all of which naturally necessitated some distant shared blood or kinship) to our nation state. Colonization was driven by self interested tribalism. By that point in history the definition of "tribe" had expanded, but not enough to view conquered peoples as having potential to become part of the "tribe". Our American revolution started out of "breach of tribe". "Hey we are part of the British tribe, why aren't we being treated like we are?" To their credit our forefathers, despite being raised, educated, normalized in the tribal mindset started to think outside of it. Yes they still held many beliefs that today we would consider racist, but it is because of their willingness to BEGIN the process of challenging tribalism mindset that our society places more value on all people today. They both challenged it with words like "We hold these truths to be self evident that ALL men are created equal," and acknowledged the tribal desire of groups/tribes to dominate over others with setting up a government system that respected the decision of the majority but also sought to protect protections of the minority. Washington's warning against partisan politics was an appeal to resist the urge to settle back into tribalism. The founders of our country methodically established a government system that recognized that humans naturally want to be tribal but that humans thrive best when powerful tribes are not allowed to completely dominate less powerful ones. Yes, I know, slavery. While the main thought forefathers did not adequately challenge slavery, their new thoughts on each life being equal regardless of which tribe they belonged to created tension for them. I believe they recognized the evil, but considering how hard it had been to just win independence and freedom to create not only a new nation/ tribe, but one that's whole premise of governing differed from any other that existed, they felt powerless to make the necessary change. AND we have to remember that they had already come such a long ways from the pervading ideology they had been raised by. (Most of us can barely handle challenging our accepted norms in daily life like changing where we sit at work.) Not all the forefathers, because there were some who were along for the ride to create a new tribe where they were top dogs (but we don't generally remember those ones or honor them.) But the true thought leaders like Jefferson, Madison, Washington, Hamilton, Franklin, Monroe, Adams, all contributed pieces to the understanding to create a government that sought to encourage individuals to break free from tribes. The philosophy they built the government on encouraged the people to think of the dignity of humanity not just of a preferred tribe. They set the wheel in motion, not perfectly but pretty darn well. It is then left to each following generation to build and improve on the ideals they set forth. Unfortunately our country is sinking back into tribalism with fear mongering and victimization narratives (both parties are guilty of both). I fear that even videos like this that attempt to bring awareness just entrench people in tribalism. Asians that moved here and stayed did so because the system here is generally speaking more respectful of human dignity than the ones they came from. Even with the hurtful things experienced, we have been able to live better more free lives here than the countries we or our ancestors came from.

TIGER WOODS and Senator DANIEL INOUYE were the only American Asians I could name. Myths busted: I suck at math. I'm 6'3". I drove a Silverado 4x4, lifted 6" with 36" mudder tires. Have no accent (business english - I think they call it.) Mixed race family. Dad, white (Career US Military Officer). Mom, Asian. Experienced Homelessness, hence the name "throw away" people. Some of my experiences: a) "go back to your country" most comment I hear. I have videos. I think it broke my dad's heart to hear people say that to me. b) Mom IS RACIST. I was Beaten for bringing home black friend from school. Recently, I hoped her cancer will be a painful death after she tried to contact me. Dad had black friends and they stayed at the house many times. But.....Dad would yell Asian epithets at tv on (Asian theater of operations) network news, in front of us kids. I think that made us ashamed of our ethnicity. c) My sister and I were sent home from school with a note - creates disturbances when speaking to each other in foreign language. Parent's told us never speak our 2nd language. We only speak English now. Student threw a Cherry Bomb at me which stuck in my shirt collar and exploded, throwing me off my bike, while riding. Loveland Elementary (Aurora, Colorado??) and Carriage Hill Elementary (Papillion, Nebraska). Both schools sucked for us. I never had issues at Fort Crook Elementary (Omaha,NE) or Logan Fontenelle (Bellevue, NE). d) Overseas, treated like foreigners on base (constantly stopped for ID among a group of American students going to school). Treated with disdain by the locals because we didn't speak the language. e) I've been threatened with violence in Branson, Mo by a group of 8 people on the 4th of July. Me (boating with white friends - their first time there as well) and a black kid (playing on a rope swing) were the only non-white people I saw that day on the lake of the Ozarks - but it was super, super crowded. If anyone remember E.F. Hutton commerials, it was like that. I would boat past and people stopped mid-beer guzzling or mid-sentence - just automatic silence and dirty stares. f) almost shot by Sheriff for carrying a black and white GOLF UMBRELLA. I am old and disabled. The local police stopped me as well. Officer didn't even get out of his car. He laughed at the report of "Asian man carrying a rifle" when he saw my umbrella. Why wasn't the person calling in a false report, arrested? g) But most racist place I have ever lived: Hawaii. "kill Haouli day" (kill white people day) in high school. if they couldn't find the white person they were looking for, they took it out on their car. So many fights only based on ethnicity. My dad selected Hawaii as duty station so he could "protect us from racism".

This show has gone downhill addressing the least important "issues". Background or ethnicity does not matter at all as long as we treat everyone with equal respect. I'm south east asian Chinese, can't tell Irish from English or Scottish, Portugese from Spanish or Italian, Bangladesh from Indian, and in fact Korean from Japanese or Chinese. If this is legitimately a problem then wouldn't "European" get sensitive as well? I'm never offended or feel left out when others mistake me for any other ethnic group. They dont have to apologise. If they want to know more about my identity let's have a conversation. If not that's fine too. I used to follow this show weekly, but now...

Could have used more info on the "economic exploitation" part. Did they get paid less than other railroad workers? That is what is usually implied with economic exploitation of workers of some minority group. But John didn't say. 20:32 This isn't just done with Asian Americans. Its also done with West Indian Black Americans, like here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqoqN4kXk3s

I went to a very white middle school and I had classmates who thought it was ridiculously funny to go up to their classmates (classmates they determined were NOT Asian) and ask “How are you Asian?” I remember some of them came up to me laughing and asked me the same question. I was so confused because I thought of myself Asian-American (I’m half-Indian), and so I asked them what they mean, why did they ask me, because I’m Indian. They responded by saying that being Indian isn’t really being Asian and that India is “like it’s own continent.” An absolutely stupid thing to say, but at the time I felt like I was being stripped of my identity. I was already an outsider in this white-school and the Asian-American label was a way for me to feel like part of a greater community, I felt proud to be Asian. This memory still stays with me today. I am always worried that I won’t be accepted by AAPI communities (like my current college’s AAPI support services) because I’m not REALLY Asian-American. This happened in 2012.

There is just..soooo MUCH WRONG with this! For one the media invented and pushed that whole get covid at asian restaurants nonsense, like they sensationalized click bait tide pods, pain killers and mentally ill criminals rebranded as "racists" to fit a stupid political narrative. though to be fair American "Chinese" places do have a bad reputation for food poisoning caused by lax food safety but most people aren't mentally ill idiots and can tell that just because one place is bad doesn't mean they all are. Just as some KFCS are trash and others still live up to the Kentucky Col's ideals. I'd like to see Americans answer who their great grandparents are, and where from, most wouldn't know! As for "Asian" most people in the US associate them with Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc Not with Indians from India, or Persians, etc. it was "elitist" UK,US,French and German nationalists who came up with the bs Asian term, and concept as a way of justifying their cultural and scientific superiority over all other humans during the enlightenment and industrial revolution. Europe is PART of Asia. Caucasians who immerged as a distinct group are from, guess what Asia! Race as a concept is just total BS! It's Pseudoscience! Of course people who come from UNDEVELOPED nations will be poorer and more likely to be exploited by the rich, this happens in EVERY SOCIETY. Blacks who come from stable families or who have parents or family or friends, or mentors who inspire them to work hard will be, guess what, successful!!! Racism is an EXCUSE for the exploitation of poor, dumb, socially unstable, despite people by those with resources. Class War is the problem, not Race wars, but hey the rich are doing better then ever while clowns parade propaganda to win cheap votes and cheaper clicks rather then solving real problems

What's also crazy is that the whole anti-Japanese sentiment in the '70s was just because... Americans couldn't build good fucking cars. During the fuel crisis, fuel-efficient Japanese cars took off in popularity, erstwhile American car makers were still putting V8's in everything. So these racist assholes would rather murder people than, you know, learn how to make a competent automobile. It's both infuriating and utterly pathetic.

Yet, not even in the worst of times were Asians forbidden to speak their language and punished for it, meanwhile in 2021 the fascist Western Ukranians are fining Russian-speaking Ukranians big money FOR. SPEAKING. A. LANGUAGE. in public!! And the US is supporting this genocide. As always.

Meh, whenever white liberals think they're woke by "disaggregating" the data and seeing us in a "nuanced" way, they, too, pit Asians against each other and dismiss Indians as wealthy privileged college educated doctors, Koreans as "stereotypical" Asians, and Vietnamese and Cambodians as poor people who are most deserving of white sympathy (pity). They never talk about the Indians or Koreans or Japanese who are in poverty or poor. They may be the minority of their minority, but dismissive white liberals like Chris Hayes always just bring on their one Asian liberal friends to give an abridged version of this same segment.

He couldn't go over all history of immigration to this racist priveledged country. It has been and will always be, a place that imperialism conquered and enslaved those whose DNA is not of European descent. I would like the scientists to map early man (the earliest of mankind) DNA to then compare to the identified land masses used today. If every person had their DNA traced to the earliest of mankind it might, just might, shut the mouths and change the toughts of those who think they are the privledged imperial conquerors. It isn't enough to say we all came from Africa because they identify with as far back as their genetic map is affordably taken or the oral history in their baby book (great grandparents). Perhaps my idea is too complicated because our DNA is depleted as successive breeding occurred over time, but I can dream. If only it were enough to put all the pieces together of the continents and zero in to where oldest mankind has been found - to date of course - and show coming forward to the following oldest remains, until the continents spread to current placement and then present that to every television/cable/internet broadcast with clickbait and algorithms to draw 'the others' in, we could penetrate the -thought to be superior- brains of the ignorant. Those who can not be made to understand that we are all of the human race will die out and hopefully teaching their offspring - without denegrating as I am - and breeding-out their ignorance of racism. Yes! My utopia for which I would not be here to see. I wish I could list the many ignorant, rascist and/or subjugated phrases or thoughts I had; from teaching, mimicking, or unto their own.... I apologize profusely no matter the origin. I feel sickened when I see or hear anything remotely close. I argue the point(s) of my own ignorance in my various ignorant notions, wherever and whenever I can. From mid 1980's to the 2000's I continually read and listened to the horrors of rascism and the conquered. Each reality gave me the pain I feel today watching and listening to the pure ignorance of the - thought to be - victims of 'reverse racism'.

Here's a general assessment of America's mindset when it comes to awareness or even basic knowledge about anything related to culture, race, or the people or actions stemming from those. We still occasionally have hordes of people trying to resurrect the "what is Obama's last name" meme, so it's not surprising that not too many people would remember/know a vice president's ethnicity. The first African-American Secretary of State? Most people in my high school government class didn't realize his ethnicity while looking at a picture of him in that context. So yeah. We're colourblind in the worst possible bastardization of that phrase - we discriminate against everyone who doesn't look like us and can't tell any differences between anyone. We identify people by their noses, eyes, mouths, and accents, and half of the time even those... extremely offensive attempts to guess where someone's ancestry is based don't even get near to the correct answer most of the time.

00:34 If you look up US astronauts to find out who has been in space the most times, I believe at least during the 90s and 00s there was a fellow named Gonzales who was half Hispanic and half Chinese who held the record for being on the most missions.

Can anyone tell me if Oliver has addressed the Harvard discrimination suit re Asian students, because it sure looks like a booger hanging from John's nose to have overlooked it. I trust his writers enough to get around to it eventually, whilst the USA loses tens of billions on lost opportunities to optimize America's intellectual capital. Canada is a shithole on that count too, in spades.

I am sure you have already decided on your topics for this season, but 'MODI and Indian Media' might interest you. India is falling on freedom of speech index consistently, internet has been shut in places for upto 15months, most of government owned companies sold to private oligarchs(Adani, Ambani), UAPA used by NIA to pick up citizens protesting what government is doing(Gogoi, Father Stan etc), botched up deal for Rafale (France has ordered probe) etc etc... Not to mention the monumental fuck up during the second wave. With UP elections due in a few months and an inevitable third wave India is a ticking time bomb as Modi is just working on optics.

Kamala's mother is Indian. On Canada at least, when we say "Asian" we mean East Asian. I don't even know why you'd have a term that is so broad to incorporate all of the physical continent of Asia when we're talking about cultures that are SO different. Seems like one of those white western ',I'm the centre of the world' terms like "world music".

Vor 13 Tage
seigeengine

100%, Canada doesn't use Asian to mean any other population group but East-Asian. Which is kind of the problem with "race" in many places. It's sort of just a vague grouping of visual similarities.

Vor 12 Tage
Taranizs
Taranizs

To be fair, most people aren't actually aware that India is an Asian country, and Kamala doesn't bear any of the physical traits you'd typically associate with an Asian ethnicity. I'd imagine the overwhelming majority of people would peg her as African-American. Side note; Asians generally aren't petty. Unless, of course, you mistake them for another kind of Asian. Then you're on their shit list :P

Vor 13 Tage
seigeengine
seigeengine

This is genuinely one of those things that's an issue, because when people say "Asian" in America, they almost never mean the whole physical continent of Asia. Asian generally means East-Asian groups... you know, because they look similar enough. Kind of like how "middle Eastern" means any brownish person that isn't Asian or Black, and "Mexican" means anyone from South of the USA. It's all just bullshit.
