AMADEUS REMASTERED HD - MOZART INSULTS SALIERI BY PLAYING HIS OWN PIECE BETTER THAN HE DID

  • Am Vor year

    Elsa Anna ArendelleElsa Anna Arendelle

This is one of my favorite scenes from Amadeus. It is rare for a film to have two actors be nominated for the same award. Thomas Hulce eventually lost to F. Murray Abraham at the Oscars, but there is no denying that both gave outstanding performances.

It was said that the real Mozart had a very childlike laugh which Hulce does his best imaginative version of. The laugh is so jarring and out of the blue that it catches the Emperor off guard twice.

Mozart is either arrogant or socially unaware because he insults Salieri multiple times. As Mozart plays Salieri's little march and notes "the rest is just the same, isn't it?" you can see how maligned Salieri felt. Then to top it off Mozart declares "that doesn't quite work, now does it?" and then proceeds to take Salieri's tune and add embellishments and improvisation such that Salieri can only look on in jealousy mixed with resentment.

Salieri's jealousy and contempt for Mozart is best summed up with the line "Grazie, Signore..." as he looks up at the crucifix.

All rights to Amadeus (Orion pictures).

Elsa Anna Arendelle
Elsa Anna Arendelle

The emperor butchered Salieri's piece, but Mozart was able to play it perfectly by only hearing it and then improvising the melody... "the rest is just the same, isn't it?" Mozart so innocent in his behavior he doesn't realize how insulting he is LOL

I don't think Mozart was trying to be insulting. He was trying to make the music be the best that it could be. As a composer himself, those notes on that sheet were like words on a page to others in the room. To him, they were far more important and carried more weight than they thought of the same thing. It was like Michelangelo looking at a stick figure on a sheet of paper and saying "This is quite charming... especially the Smiley Face. I think I can do better..."

At 8:43, Salieri looks like he wants to cry... and I can't decide if it's out of embarrassment or because the music is beautiful. Abraham's performance is so nuanced throughout the film - he masterfully captures the balance between Salieri being envious and in awe of Mozart's talent.

Only Salieri took it as an insult - BECAUSE Mozart was light-years better than him. Mozart was a genius, whereas Salieri was.... well, not. So, he took it as an insult. Eternal rivalry between them. And Mozart was still light-years better. He still is.

That is in essence the problem of man...the one who has to work hard hates the one whom so much is given...that dude toiled for hours to compose what he believed, and what the King even, was going to be THE music...and Mozart and his weird ass just waltz’s in, dissects in seconds, and makes it better...he did it all with a cheeky smile, a half assed presentation, and the essence of a child duck footing through life...all whilst talking profanity in front of what would be the God on earth at the time...lol Mozart...what a fucking bad ass

We watched this movie in classical music appreciation in college after the class I went up and tried to play the song by ear on the piano in the back of the room thinking no one was watching nailed it. Little did I know the professor was still in the room in the front behind the curtains when he heard it he went walking up the stairs to see who was playing, I got up out of that room and ran before he could see me I don’t want that kind of pressure. The next week first thing during class he went on a rant about how if anyone in the class was a musical genius he would have noticed by now for like 5 minutes everyone else was looking at him like what the hell os wrong with this guy. And I just had to put my mouth in my hands to keep from bursting into laughter and that was the greatest class I ever had those 5 minutes were so damn sweet.

Tom and F. Murray are wonderful in this scene. As well as everyone else. But Jeffrey Jones makes this scene special IMO. He plays a great emperor. And I love how the Emperor is possessive of Mozart right from the beginning, but especially after Mozart wants the opera to be in German. The staging is excellent, the way the Emperor stands next to Mozart, facing the court. And then the Emperor commands Mozart to play Salieri's piece with a very regal, "show us."

I find Salieri's grievance to be stupid. He's a royal court composer which means he's still damn good, and is recognized & endorsed enough to have high status. Mozart, the renowned genius, seems to enjoy drawing out inspiration from his music. So what if Mozart is a bit of an insensitive prick? He's proven happy to collaborate with Salieri, and that is proof that Salieri has _The Music_ in him, which he keeps thanking his God for. Pretty sure Mozart wouldn't collaborate with just anyone. Aside, this movie was amazing. I saw it as a kid in the theater.

When I read the comments here, Im not sure if everybody understands that this is a movie. It didnt happen, ok? And Salieri himself is one of the most gifted people in music history, who didnt only wrote beautiful music, but did a lot of theory, ground breaking work and education. He was just 6 years older than Mozart and when Mozart neither had success nor a job, Salieri already was in the highest ranks and one of the most important people in "music bizz". I hate this movie for "establishing" long proven fake news in the mainstream audience. In his lifetime, Salieri was far more successfull and admitted than Mozart. In reality, there was a time when Mozart hated Salieri, but later they had a pretty good relationship. The legend that he killed Mozart appeared long after their deaths, when Mozarts work gained in popularity and Salieris lost and I think it`s very very bad that this movie put him in this bad light for a drama plot.
