@Polina Bernard wrong again, that rule was as a result of France and Israel sending an 11-year old and a 12-year old respectively in 1989.

@Quietstream Productions I didn't say this rule came BECAUSE she won, just AFTER. Several years later is still after, right? By the way, although this age rule was set in 1989, when 11 and 12 years old singers took part, Sandra Kim's victory in 1986 has much to do with this decision.

Before 2002 most performers just sang and at most would sway from left to right. In 2002 Latvia had the singer actually do choreography and it's interesting how most winners after that had choreography it was almost like 2002 was the year we went from just singing to performing.
Vor year
Seschat +51
The Kessler twins (Germany 1959) had the first choreography in ESC (very reduced because the stage was very small), Brotherhood of Man (UK 1976) had a "handography"(Germany 1977 too), Izhar Cohen (Israel 1978) and his background group had a little dancy choreography and Dschingis Khan (Germany 1979) had choreography and costumes matching the song. Those came to my mind first , I'm sure there are more 🤔 The history of ESC is very far-reaching, there is a lot to discover :)
Vor year
Vigo +5
@Seschat The Kessler twins at best swayed from left to right and snapped their fingers, which is what I said most acts did. Brotherhood of Man still just stood still yes they bopped up and down and moved their hands but it was very light choreography compared to Latvia's in 2002. Izhar Cohen swayed from left to right as well just at a quicker tempo hardly would call that choreography, they had a dance break indeed but my point was Latvia were the first country to both sing and dance at the same time and with more extreme choreography than just swaying and doing a little jiggle. Dschingis Khan is probably your best example because absolutely there is a lot more going on there but it's only one person on the stage that's actually moving their feet, everyone else is standing and swaying at best. My original point is that what Latvia did was so ahead of its time which is why it won, it wouldn't even qualify in these years but it was so ahead of its time that it amazed the people which is why it won. She sang whilst dancing, there's dancers on the stage too that don't even sing, the backing vocalists are apart of the choreography and then they do a fancy clothes change which back in 2002 probably amazed everyone. I respect the history of Eurovision absolutely I just thought it was interesting the dynamic shift we had from songs in 2002. The year after Latvia won we had Turkish belly dancers who made an incredible performance with their singing and dancing. It's just from my opinion it's clear 2002 was the year we went from just singing a song to singing and performing.
Vor year
Seschat +7
@Vigo The Kessler twins had really little space and therefore hardly any possibilities, but they turned and did synchronized dance steps on the tiny little stage - a miracle that they didn't hurt themselves! :D 'Choreography' is a wide field, and can contain all possible variations. As you have described it, you are of course right. Except for the one with the trick dresses - Ireen Sheer already had something like that in 1978 (Germany), but ok it was more of a trick top ;) The girls from UK had the first real trick dresses in 1981.
Vor year
Seschat +4
@Vigo I just remembered Germany's contribution from 1996 (Leon) - that was a choreography like the one you described. Unfortunately, Germany's entry and 5 others (if I'm not mistaken) didn't make it to the final.

I showed them the last 20 years of Eurovision winners. The kids (ages ranging from 6-16) we bopping their heads to Ukrain; they loved Greece, then FINLAAAAAAND!!! Thank you for this video! I'm from the UK, and I love how our mentality and aspiration kind of changed towards eurovision. Pre 2000 we would of been like "ah we finished 2nd again? Our mentality and aspiration changed when Terry Wogan took over the commentary and started the downward spiral of derision and sarcasm that started to ruin the reputation of the contest and Graham Norton continued along the same path!Hardly surprising that Britain stopped sending serious contenders and ended up with trash like Scooch and the perennial last place! Now that we finally bothered to send a decent entry that would have won if Putin hadn't intervened maybe we can finally get rid of the sarcasm and start taking it seriously again! This was actually the first year I watched the contest in its entirety for years because, thanks to YouTube, I found a wonderful live stream from the Eurovision press centre with a brilliant live chat so I turned off the sound on my tv and listened to it on the stream instead with commentary by two people who were absolutely massive fans and were really into it all and treated it with the love and respect that it deserved!

I always remember calling Bjorn Ulvaeus pudding face and was really annoyed when ABBA won. Little did I know that just a few short years later ABBA would become one of my favourite groups! Looking back on the contest over the years my favourite song is still Ding Dinge Dong which won the following year and just has this contintental European vibe to it that is often used in montages about Europe to this day.

To be fair the dude from Italy who was supposed to perform in 2020 could have also won at the end. His performance this year of that song was so damn powerful. And even, if Iceland and Russia would get most of the televotes, he probably would get buffed by the Jury. And probably a lot of votes would get split between other countries as well. I mean the girl from Poland who performed her song during 2020 JESC finale also did extremely well. In the end I feel like it's ok we didn't have that event? The Youtube event was actually kinda cool and there was no risk of Russia winning which would be messy with modern situation.

I've been manifesting for Spain to finally do well in Eurovision for an entire year and they finally did it, they got the 3rd place (although not with a song i like, but still, congrats to them, chanel and her team). Now I am manifesting for germany to do well next year. Come on, Germany, you got this! About France......i am sincerly shocked.........they've sent such a unique song and they've got such a low score for what? 😭😭😭😭 I thought they'd finish in top 10, i hope they won't go back to the boring ballads.

I didn’t appreciate France at first, but I warmed up to it eventually. I totally agree, they didn’t deserve that low of a score. If anyone should be down there, it’s Greece (Sorry if I sound rude, but to be honest, it was very boring)

the range of musical styles, from chanson to metal, to electronic with folk mixed into it in recent years is just beautiful to see. Simply amazing that any kind of music can win. And yes, I do believe that Kalush Orchestra won because of the political situation BUT: The song was an absolute banger! And it's absolutely justified that they won it with such a great entry. Only sad thing is that Subwoolfer didn't get second place, for they were in my opinion together with Kalush Orchestra the best two entries.

Honestly, I’m so glad that Ukraine won this year. At first I didn’t like the song, but it has grown on me and I rooted for them even of I am from Sweden which this year had a strong entry. And it was so beautiful to see the whole Europe united for Ukraine. Before complaining about politics, just remember why Eurovision started. This is a symbolic win in Eurovision history that no other song this year would be near!🇺🇦❤️

But the objectif of the eurovision SONG Contest is to vote for the favorite song of the 40 Countries…Not vote for the Badest political situation of à country. Politic in eurovision is for bidden…
Vor year
Solros Sol +18
@Alexandre LOOTEN I am aware of that, but since when has Eurovision NOT being about politics? It has always been and will always be, even if it’s not allowed. Sure, some countries were robbed this year but Ukraine needed this victory because it gives them some hope in all the tragic. And, their song was really good so they deserved the win from that perspective too.
Vor year
Alexandre LOOTEN +20
@Solros Sol Ok okay then why last year Azerbaijan participated in the 2021 edition of Eurovision while a few months earlier it bombed Armenia, a country also a member of the EBU which could not participate in because of the war that Azerbaijan waged? Why was Israel not expelled for its genocide against the Palestinians? Why did France in 2015 not win the competition when they suffered terrorist attacks all over the country? You have to stop looking for an excuse for a while. Already Ukraine should clearly have been excluded from the competition in the same way as Russia, we cannot accept a country which is going to do some kind of political propaganda for a singing competition (whether it is Russia, Ukraine or not any other country). And the primary goal of the competition is the political neutrality that Eurovision is supposed to represent, so the one and only support that the EBU is supposed to have is towards peace for all peoples and not taking sides for one and exclude the other...And what the EBU did was violated and a lot of people in Europe are disappointed with this lack of neutrality last night and this sort of stance for Ukraine in doing so. winning only by support and not for the song while the other countries worked hard to win...

ABBA was the first winner with a song in English from a non-English speaking country, but the first time a non-English speaking country _participated_ with a song in English was in 1965 when Ingvar Wixell from Sweden sung "Absent Friend". The year after they banned the free choice of languages, forcing everyone to sing in their country's native languages. In 1973 that rule was abolished, but introduced again in 1977, and then abolished in 1999.

Before 2002 most performers just sang and at most would sway from left to right. In 2002 Latvia had the singer actually do choreography and it's interesting how most winners after that had choreography it was almost like 2002 was the year we went from just singing to performing.
Vor yearSeschat +51
The Kessler twins (Germany 1959) had the first choreography in ESC (very reduced because the stage was very small), Brotherhood of Man (UK 1976) had a "handography"(Germany 1977 too), Izhar Cohen (Israel 1978) and his background group had a little dancy choreography and Dschingis Khan (Germany 1979) had choreography and costumes matching the song. Those came to my mind first , I'm sure there are more 🤔 The history of ESC is very far-reaching, there is a lot to discover :)
Vor yearVigo +5

Vor yearSeschat +4
@Vigo I just remembered Germany's contribution from 1996 (Leon) - that was a choreography like the one you described. Unfortunately, Germany's entry and 5 others (if I'm not mistaken) didn't make it to the final.

I worked as an English teacher in Japan, and they asked me to do a class about something weird that happens in Europe, as their media only shows politics and squeaky clean idealised versions of European countries. I showed them the last 20 years of Eurovision winners. The kids (ages ranging from 6-16) we bopping their heads to Ukrain; they loved Greece, then FINLAAAAAAND!!! Nothing brings me more joy than 40 kids gasping in shock and laughing their butts off (in a good way) as they thought Finland was all Christmas and reindeer. XD

Thank you for this video! I'm from the UK, and I love how our mentality and aspiration kind of changed towards eurovision. Pre 2000 we would of been like "ah we finished 2nd again? Really happy, but fingers crossed we'll win next year!". Whereas we finish 2nd this year after so long and it's like "OMG, we came second, WE ACTUALLY GOT POINTS!" 😄🎉
Vor yearB.A.L +10

1974 was really a turning point in what kind of music was submitted and how the show looked, like it or not. Then the same happened in 2003

Something definetely happened in 2003, most winners prior to 2003 were either bland, boring or bad except for a certain few. Well, 1995 is my favourite winner and 1999 is very good winner but in general, not good.

Fun fact: in 2000 Olsen brothers won the Danish contest singing the song in Danish (which is somehow just as good as the English version) but for the international version the decided to translate it and won…

Only a few entries before the mid 60's were familiar, but after 1990's I really started to recognize the songs and even be able to sing along. Ruslana 2004 and Lordi 2006 are the best. I'm hoping for a Käärijä win for Finland 2023 but Loreen will probably win automatically.

Vor yearAlexandre LOOTEN +25
But the objectif of the eurovision SONG Contest is to vote for the favorite song of the 40 Countries…Not vote for the Badest political situation of à country. Politic in eurovision is for bidden…
Vor yearSolros Sol +18
@Alexandre LOOTEN I am aware of that, but since when has Eurovision NOT being about politics? It has always been and will always be, even if it’s not allowed. Sure, some countries were robbed this year but Ukraine needed this victory because it gives them some hope in all the tragic. And, their song was really good so they deserved the win from that perspective too.
Vor yearAlexandre LOOTEN +20
Vor yearMinerva's Owl +7
Eurovision started for the music, not for the politics. If you want to engage in politics, actually *study* it and keep it out of singing contests.
Vor yearAretha Franklin Whitney Houston +4
It was the public gave Ukraine their victory. If they had gone by the jury vote it would of been UK victorious. We all knew Ukraine would win this year. Their song was originally wrote about one the bands mum, but the conflict gave it more meaning.

You can actually find audio tracks of every Eurovision entry online if you know where to look. I created a playlist of winners, and another one for all the songs I liked, winners or not. Listening to the official audio is often much more pleasing than the live version, because they are mostly recorded in the studio.

1974 was probably the first time a non-English speaking country won or even participated with a song sung in English. ABBA was probably famous worldwide thanks to their participation in Eurovision.
Vor 3 MonateÅsa S +3
ABBA was the first winner with a song in English from a non-English speaking country, but the first time a non-English speaking country _participated_ with a song in English was in 1965 when Ingvar Wixell from Sweden sung "Absent Friend". The year after they banned the free choice of languages, forcing everyone to sing in their country's native languages. In 1973 that rule was abolished, but introduced again in 1977, and then abolished in 1999.

Am I wrong or did Sweden produce the best nr 1 hits over the years? 1974 Waterloo (obviously), Carola Fångad av en Stormvind 1991, Euphoria 2012, Heroes 2015 comes to mind. That being said, was pleasantly surprised by Norway and Ireland as well. (For example 1995 Nocturne and 1996 The voice. Still holds up). Also wish there were some kind of rule forcing countries to sing in their native languages. Later years have been more bland since all have pretty much switched to English.

I saw a lot the ESCs and I never forget Severine 1971. As she was on the stage performing her song as the 3 of 18 presenters, I said direct, I do not know today who was with me, maybe one of my first girfriends and family I was 18, she will win today. The year later Vicky was the favorite at all, easy turn. And for what ever reason, 1974 at ABBAs victory I was not present on this evening.
