Al-Nakba: The Palestinian catastrophe
"The Nakba did not begin in 1948. Its origins lie over two centuries ago…."
So begins this four-part series on the 'nakba', meaning the 'catastrophe', about the history of the Palestinian exodus that led to the first Arab-Israeli war in 1948, and the establishment of the state of Israel.
This sweeping history starts back in 1799 with Napoleon's attempted advance into Palestine to check British expansion and his appeal to the Jews of the world to reclaim their land in league with France.
The narrative moves through the 19th century and into the 20th century with the British Mandate in Palestine and comes right up to date in the 21st century and the ongoing 'nakba' on the ground.
Arab, Israeli and Western intellectuals, historians and eye-witnesses provide the central narrative which is accompanied by archive material and documents, many only recently released for the first time.
For Palestinians, 1948 marks the 'nakba' or the 'catastrophe', when hundreds of thousands were forced out of their homes.
But for Israelis, the same year marks the creation of their own state.
This series attempts to present an understanding of the events of the past that are still shaping the present.
This story starts in 1799, outside the walls of Acre in Ottoman-controlled Palestine, when an army under Napoleon Bonaparte besieged the city. It was all part of a campaign to defeat the Ottomans and establish a French presence in the region.
In search of allies, Napoleon issued a letter offering Palestine as a homeland to the Jews under French protection. He called on the Jews to ‘rise up’ against what he called their oppressors.
Napoleon’s appeal was widely publicised. But he was ultimately defeated. In Acre today, the only memory of him is a statue atop a hill overlooking the city.
Yet Napoleon's project for a Jewish homeland in the region under a colonial protectorate did not die, 40 years later, the plan was revived but by the British.

An excellent presentation. A lot more historical analysis of events than displayed in most programs discussing the Palestinian issues. The British colonial objectives are explained and factually supported. I have a much better understanding of why Palestinians feel they were dispossessed of their land. A very informative program.

Didn't the Spanish colinise the Phillipines first and named it after King Phillip the 2nd hence the name Phillipines. Then US came pretending to liberate the people and work with the indigenous to push out the Spanish, but in the end the Spanish handed the power over to the US. They both role played a war and the last stand of the Spanish and purposely kept the indigenous far out so they wouldn't know?

@Prophetic Angel Who predicted it and to whom? Didn't the people you mention steal the homeland of the Canaanites? Something about a battle at Jericho? All mythology though, as that battle never happened along with most of the things mentioned in the books Look up the names of those who created the new state. They are all central and eastern European. Herzl, Weizmann, Mabovitch, Grün, etc. Check on their real names as they often changed them to sound more "authentic". They knew nothing about Palestine and had no connections to it.
Vor yearProphetic Angel +1
@Ned Ludd Palestine is really just philistine. Go do your research
Vor yearNed Ludd +9
@Prophetic Angel You should not stop at reading your mythology and try doing some historical research. You avoided commenting on all the damning points I made but one, and that one you got wrong. The Philistines were the people who lived in southern Canaan. "Palestine" is the Latin translation of the Greek word which is a cognate of the Hebrewd "peleshet". The ancient Egyptians also had their form of the word. Your book has nothing historical from the beginning to at least Joshua. All that was just vague oral tradition which was only written down after 600 BCE, i.e. hundreds of years after the supposed events. The creation myths were borrowed from other cultures. Exodus never happened. Joshua never fought a battle at Jericho whose walls were destroyed by an earthquake at least 100 years before before his imagined battle. The falsehoods just continue.

If you've landed on this page for whatever reason, I urge you to watch all four parts of this documentary. It is a masterpiece, documenting the inter-war machinations to dispossess the Palestian people of their land, the tragedy of their forced expulsion in 1948 and the indifference of both the Western and Arab countries to their plight which sadly, continues to this day.

Far from it. This documentary shows exactly the fallacies and prejudices that led the Palestinian Arabs to unfortunately cause their own demise. There was no plot to dispossess them. They created a zero sum game and the other side had more to lose. They lost but are perpetuating the lies that led them into the abyss in the first place.

My life stories with Israeli apartheid: Since the Nakba in 1948, my Palestinian family has been displaced by Israeli forces from Jericho, their birth place, to three different refugee camps in the West Bank until they settled in one camp near Bethlehem, where they started their fourth new life after all of their assets they had in Jericho like houses, farms , shops, and lands were confiscated by the Israelis and simply given away to Israeli settlers who immigrated to Palestine from Eastern Europe. After that my dad worked almost all of his life for Israeli building companies in the occupied West Bank to secure basic needs for his children. My mum and despite her mental illness caused by the displacement trauma, had somehow and miraculously managed to keep us all alive , and together. However the saddest aspect of this brutal Israeli occupation was not the loss of our land in Jericho itself, but the overall poor living conditions we experienced under the apartheid military control where the Israeli soldiers can shoot and kill innocent Palestinians without being prosecuted. Of course, lack of basic human rights has been the main highlight of the Israeli occupiers who did not give neither my mum nor dad any health care, social care, life or health insurance , compensation for displacement , care home or even basic retirement salary as they later became frail and ill. My parents were lucky to bring up a family in such inhumane circumstances and for me they were my biggest heroes and without whom the story of my life would not be possible to tell. The story of my family is just one of millions of similar stories in Palestine and I’m sure there are more horrific stories to be told, but there are also many that can never be heard as their heroes are no longer with us.

Hebrew was preserved for religious reasons. Of course the rabbis had a much better knowledge of Hebrew and Aramaic but all religious Jews must also learn Hebrew in order to read the Torah. Of course in the case of Ashkenazim, who had a very strong admixture with Europeans, the connection they felt to Europe was probably even stronger. However, the severe discrimination and massacres they suffered in Europe, along with the rise of European nationalism in the 19th century made them realize they needed Israel's independence in order to ensure their survival and self determination. The Holocaust only reinforced that sentiment.

In the end, the workers of the species, who feeds even the kings and rulers and soldiers, are the most affected. The kings, queens, and soldiers becomes fat, big, strong and powerful without even working for their food to eat while the worker becomes weak, small, and poor. A sad life for all species. But i still hope that there will come a time where there are no more boundaries in nations and all have their on place on earth. I think this will happen when all people have cross breeds with all species. Arab x jews x malays x whites x blacks x yellows x reds x hindus x asians x americans x europeans x africans x etc. If you have all the bloods of every nation, which will you side? The only difference will be your greed and fear. The fear of losing becomes greed and the greed for everything becomes fear of having nothing.

What should've happened is that both groups, the Palestinian Arabs and the newer Jewish settlers, came together and formed their own joint state by ridding themselves of their British overlords.
Vor 2 yearsRed Poppy +19
*Zionists never wanted a joint state.* Palestine was to become an exclusively Jewish state, according to the Zionist plan. The British, for all their ulterior motives, actually wanted a democracy, with all citizens remaining, and having one vote each. The Zionists first chased out the British, and then evicted the Arabs.
Vor 2 yearsBen Enivel +5
@Red Poppy Absolutely not as you describe. The Brits were given a MANDATE to create a homeland for the Jews while respecting other locals rights. This was after a unanimous vote by the LoN and the land allotted was the totality of the land west of the Jordan river. No Jew was to remain on the east in order to make an Arab state. Some Brits then went to promise (without any right to do so) all the lands to the Arabs: they had no legal power to do this but the Arabs use this as a justification for their claims. There never was any Arab state there in history.

I’ve watched this twice and I am still confused. The video said that the Jewish National Fund bought 10,000 dunam in the north. Then immediately afterwards, the video says that this was a hardship on the farmers who had to leave the land. If the land didn’t belong to the farmers, who did it belong to? Was it a tenant-farmer situation? If so, it wasn’t the fault of the Jewish National Fun who bought it; it would be the fault of whomever sold it. The man who spoke immediately after this fact, Wakeem Wakeem, spoke of this as an expulsion. How is it an illegal seizure or illegal expulsion if the land was sold to the Zionists legally? The next confusing thing about these 10,000 dunam is the amount of people who were supposedly displaced. If you convert 10,000 dunam to square miles, you get 3.8 or round it up to 4, 4 square miles. The video said that approximately 60,000 farmers and their families were displaced from the land because of this sale. How on earth did 60,0000 people live on 4 square miles without high rise apartment buildings? Something doesn’t add up.

Sorry can't help. But if you are interested in similar sounding music go online and search for a superb Jewish composer / player called Yari Hermen. He is a modern pianist with some of the most melodic haunting music out there.

LOL don't get too emotional now :) this's aljazeera's version ... doesn't amount to facts ! You should know, often when people blame "colonialism" or others, its to coverup their own failures... when corrupt leaders cant provide for their people, they provide "nationalism" , or religion to control its people's minds... The ONLY catastrophe palestinians had was the failures of their own palestinian leaders who didnt accept the 2 state plan given to them in 1948 and wanted it ALL ! Brits actually gave more land to the palestinians than jews ... but their GREED & HATRED against jews lead them to wage wars against israel, that's how they lost their land... Blaming isreal is only an excuse for their own failures !

In order to solve the conflict they have to find common ground. This is why it's important for both sides to learn about their common Israelite roots and the benefits of their reunification under a one state solution, based on the principles of Rationalism, Secularism, Liberalism, Multiculturalism and Social Democracy. This is the best solution for both sides.

This the historical book ever you can ever find " the bible" I'm not an israelite but that's their land thousands years ago; the Israelites cannot be defeated even if the whole world should gather, its fact Daniel 4:17 This is the decision of the alert and watchful angels. So then, let all people everywhere know that the Supreme God has power over human kingdoms and that he can give them to anyone he chooses -- even to those who are least important.’ Genesis 15:18-21 On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram and said, "To your descendants I give this land, from the Wadi of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates— the land of the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites, Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaites, Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites and Jebusites." Genesis 17:7-9 I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you. The whole land of Canaan, where you now reside as a foreigner, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you; and I will be their God." Then God said to Abraham, "As for you, you must keep my covenant, you and your descendants after you for the generations to come.

The motivating factor for creating a “Jewish Homeland” in Palestine doesn’t seem to be solely built on claims of Jewish suffering at the hands of western Europeans or Americans, but simply for being a colonial out post for imperial France, and then Imperial Britain.

Vor 2 yearsLong-Ball-Larry +3
@syed ali Jews are from Judea and were exiled by the Romans who renamed the land to (Syria-)Palaestina. That's consensual history. So are you claiming Palestinians are Arabized Jews, who are from the tribe of Judah part of the 12 tribes of Israel (children of Jacob), who were basically Canaanite tribes that formed after Phoenician society collapsed? Or are you claiming they are Philistines, who came from Crete/Greece? Palestine is latinised/greek form of Philistine which comes from Egyptian/Hebrew Peleshet/Plishtim as you surely know, meaning "land of foreign invaders". "Native Palestinians" or "native foreign invaders" would be an oxymoron. So what did Palestinians call themselves before the Islamic conquest and Arabization? What was their native tongue? According to your history book.
Vor 2 yearsfibonaccisequins +3
@Long-Ball-Larry Jewish people were not native to Europe but how they were essentially expelled from the place where they were born and raised is still wrong. It was The Jewish Question in the 1800s-1940s and we all know how that ended...in genocide. Now it’s “the question of Palestine”. I agree that the Jews should have a state but this situation was so clearly motivated by political power. I do not blame the Jews who were just looking for a safe haven but the British took advantage of the situation.

I don’t disagree with much of what you said except the part about European Jewry was able to preserve their “language” as Hebrew is a revived language. Only the learned and the Rabbis spoke it before the dawn of the twentieth century, and most European Jews did not see themselves as an ethnic solidified group before WWII.

At the end of the day the British failed miserably at partitioning the Middle East; just like their partioning of India was a catastrophe. In both cases of partition, the legacy of the Brits was decades of never ending conflict. Jordan should have been split into two countries; one for the Palestinians, and one for the Hashemites. This would have stopped all disputes, and unnecessary conflicts.

This documentary, like most others on the subject, ignores opposition to the Balfour policy which included prominent British Jews. Most notably by the only Jew in the government cabinet, Sir Edwin Montegu. Read his memorandum on the Balfour letter. What he predicted in it has come true. He wasn't the only one. There was widespread political opposition in Britain to the policy. It was not a foregone conclusion. It seems that Parliament never had the chance to vote on it.
